I just noticed that there hadn't been any new sidecar files in my auto-import watched folders for some time.
I tried manually updating tags from Library, but no luck: I got a failure message.
My media is on an unRaid server. I tried other files that have sidecars already, and I could not update the tags on those either. Non of the files/folders are read only.
I next imported a file on a locally attached USB drive. I had the same issue with that file too.
Can anyone reproduce this?

Tools/Options/Importing&Tagging/Store tags in external sidecar files ?

Thanks! First thing I checked, though, so that's not it.

Damn it! I checked again, and somehow it had been disabled. The overlay of the dropdown menu in options is kind of hard to distinguish in the Noire skin. It looked like it was checked, because the checkmark from the menu item "underneath" was showing. That item is "Update tags when file info changes"
While it is totally my fault, maybe some contrast, an outline or repositioning of the dropdown option might make it harder for someone to reproduce this issue in the future? See the picture below:

I disabled transparency on my systems. At distance, popup description of movies was hard to read.
edit: sorry, I expanded your screen capture afterwards, different issue !
