Title: NAS functionality
Post by: cleeds on May 26, 2015, 08:28:47 am
I plan on adding a network streamer such as the Cambridge StreamMagic to my audio system. I want it use it without requiring my PC to be on, so I hope to use Media Network installed on NAS, which will have a wired gigabyte ethernet connection to the streamer.

Question: will this setup allow the streamer to use the playlists that I've already created in MC? I've searched the MC forum and wiki and don't see an explanation of this.

I'm pretty new to home networking, so thanks for helping me with this basic question.

I think the playlist question depends on the device itself.

Did you consider JRiver's comparable hardware?

Thanks for the info, JimH.

Yes, I did consider the JRiver ID. But I want a streamer that I can put in my audio rack and that will be absolutely silent. So I'd like to install the NAS remotely, and have something like the Cambridge StreamMagic in the listening room.

It can't be installed on a NAS, it requires your PC to be on all the time.

It can, but it's not available yet.

That sounds interesting Jim. Is there a thread that talks about what you are alluding to in more detail?

FWIW I have a similar Stream Magic set up, but my MC Center files reside on a MAC book rather than a NAS.

Works a treat with JRemote on my IPad

You could get a USB Id and install it on a minimalist, silent PC. If you're just streaming audio, you wouldn't need a lot of CPU grunt or much by way of RAM.
