Title: directsound audio flutter
Post by: shAf on September 20, 2003, 12:00:28 pm
I was wondering if anyone else hears what I hear, ... that is, after playing MP3s after approximately an hour a slight "flutter" will begin, and it gets worse though the next hour, to a point where the sound is almost terrible.  But then, all I have to do is stop and restart (the track, not MC9), and it will be fine for another hour.

It seems to happen only for having configured the output for 'directsound' ... if I configure it instead for 'ASIO', it will not occur.

Hrm, I don't get this exact problem. I have noticed problems with directsound and very short crossfade settings, though. Perhaps there is something yet to be found... BTW, you didn't mention which soundcard you're using (mine is the Terratec Aureon Space).

Yes the SC should have been mentioned, and is just one of those important things which should be listed by MC info.  My card is a M-audio Revo & latest drivers.

I'm using the M-audio revo and I have the same problem.

Hmmm? ... and no similar responses from any other sound cards(?)  Appears to be something to report to M-audio support.

JRiver:  How to best report this(?)  If you don't have a Revo to troubleshoot with, and they don't have MC ... how do we describe the problem, or otherwise provide them with enough information?

If you have a good contact there, let them know we'd be glad to try to help.  If they need a license, they can contact me at jimh @ jriver.com.

Possibly of note: IIRC, Terratec Aureon boards use the same primary chip as the Revo series.

Jim,

I have an ongoing e-mail discussion with M-audio's tech support about this. I'll cc you on the next message and include a link to this discussion thread.

Their reply to me would have implied more of us should be experiencing the same problem ... as if it's an inherent problem with 'directsound' resources, and not the M-Audio cards or drivers ... but they also implied they're working on it.

Any possibility its associated with the Windows OS (... mine is Win2000 ...)
