Someone on another forum claims I can play a dvd-audio disk through JRiver. Just a myth, right?

JRiver can play the PCM high resolution audio files that come *from* a DVD-A disc.  But it can't decode the files from the physical media.  It doesn't have a DVD-A decoder built in.  If you use a third party application to rip the PCM audio from the DVD-A, JRiver can play them quite well.

The most popular software to pull the audio from DVD-A is DVD Audio Extractor.  Runs on Windows and Mac and works quite well.  It has a free 30 day evaluation.  Google will bring it right up for you.
