Title: Problem with Debian Stretch KDE Plasma5
Post by: geier22 on August 02, 2015, 02:14:53 am
Last week there was the major update to KDE stretch Plasma5. Since then, KDE immediately freezes when I try to start MC. Then only a a hardware reset is possible.
I know that MC is not made for Debian Stetch. But maybe someone has already a solution for it.
This happens in the VM, in which MC ran with KDE 4 without problems. A new VM with Plasma 5 / Stretch shows exact the same behavior
In no log it gives an indication of this failure

The same happens on Netrunner 16 (Plasma 5, based on Ubuntu 15.04, standard install on a real disk partition). It does not happen on SparkyLinux 4.0 XFCE (based on Debian Stretch) or Ubuntu MATE 15.04. Probably MC is incompatible with Plasma 5.

EDIT

I tested v. 20.0.131 for Debian (Jessie) AMD64

I tested it additionally with Tanglu 3.0 RC1.
The same: click -> freeze ---> only hardware reset.
What a pity - My laptop is running with Debian Stretch / KDE. I guess I'll have to say goodbye to KDE.  :-[ :-[ :o
I hope at some point MC runs with Plasma5.
For me the best desktop environment is KDE. Now I'm going to switch to stretch / Cinnamon.

I would guess it's a bug in Plasma 5. Probably some unsupported low level X function.
There shouldn't be a way that one could freeze the OS with a userspace program like MC which doesn't do anything tricky with the hardware.

FWIW, I have an Arch Virtual Box guest and if I try to start Plasma 5 with hardware acceleration enabled, Plasma hard freezes on load before I even get to the desktop. It boots fine with hardware acceleration disabled and I can start MC.

The Arch forums are full of people who have total system crashes/lockups with Plasma 5 that seem linked to video driver issues.  Two examples (but there are more):

I've never been a KDE user, but I'm not sure how ready for primetime plasma 5 actually is, or it may just be bad luck with a recent mesa regression that makes intel's SNA acceleration particularly unstable for some people see here for details and a workaround: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/3f5567/the_intel_driver_bug_that_crashes_plasma5_and/

I run debian testing and got round to upgrading to kde5/sddm today, MC works fine on it. Nvidia card in this so I wouldn't be affected by any intel driver bugs.

I have now made a separate installation of stretch on a separate drive.
Installed the Nvidia Driver (340.76-5), and then MC21. It happened exactly the same as in the VM. Click ---> The operating system freezes  immediately. Only a hardware reset is possible.
