This version will require an MC21 Linux license or an MC21 Master License.  It has a 30 day trial period.

Chrome browser doesn't work in jriver on QNAP.
So purchased the license on a PC - now how do I convert that onto the NAS?

MC doesn't use the browser to install the license, that's just for a page of information displayed after the license is installed.
You could also install firefox which doesn't seem to have chrome's limitation.

Until receiving the email notice today I had given up on using Media Center. I'll explain; I have a PS Audio DirectStream DAC with their new Bridge II streamer and have been streaming music files to it from a Synology NAS via Media Center. All files are processed except DSD which come as 24/192 files unless I check the DSD Bitstream box in the Advanced menu. Then it plays DSD as DSD but skips to the next track within 30 seconds. In fact, all files then skip to the next track within 30 seconds. I suspect that this is a PS Audio problem but I am now wondering if this QNAP is a solution or MC for Linux. Any advice would be appreciated. BTW, I read on one of the forums that JRiver has attempted to work with Synology on some sort of compatibility.

Using QNAP instead of Synology isn't likely to solve the problem.

Is there any chance to get MC running on QNAP TS-869PRO ?

HD Station 3.x is not available for this device (only older 2.x available), while JRMC21 requires 3.x .

I was hoping for DLNA audio-streaming to my networked DAC from MC, but got stuck on this  ?

Hello I installed it with my master licence but i would say that i have problems to manage it with JRemote. The playlists created in JRemote and not seen in JRiver and Playlists in JRiver are not updated in JRemote.
I can play for few minutes but at one moment i loose connection and my playlist is becoming only 1 title....
I also had some alert message saying that I don't have the rights to write the setting parameters and at least when I create a DLNA DAC, I'm not able to remove it after.....

It seems that there is a lot of bugs right now...

Installed MC21 on my QNAP, very disappointed to see "Theater View" is not available!
As the app is getting installed to HD Station, the "media server"  function is switching off once the app is closed (hence not really useful).

Normal view on HD Station is really trouble some to use & navigate.

Understandable as this is the first attempt, but need to enable "Theater View" to make the app useful.

Hello JRiver,
Any chance we can have a native application for QNAP?
My NAS is in a completely different room from my stereo without a display/TV or keyboard.
It would seem more usable if we could access the application remotely instead of being physically attached.

Hello, JRiver v21.0.28 seems to be available for qnap since January the 4th.
I'm not able to install the update. HD Station can see the update but when I launch JRIver it is tsill the 21.0.7

What Happen ? it seems that the first release has a versionning higher than the one published on Jan the 4th....

Even if i remove the previous version (saving my library) and i try to install the 21.0.28 it comes back to the 21.0.7

Thanks for your support

Is your HDStation up to date?
21.0.28 is using a newer package build that's from the latest HDStation.

So you confirm that JRiver 21.0.28 is newer than the 21.0.7 ?

Definitely.
I'll try re-installing from the main site on our QNAP build box, normally we just install it through the browser.

Ok, I desactivated and removed the 21.0.7, reinstall 21.0.28 from apkg after NAS reboot : it works fine.

@ hsnopi, I only use JRiver for music. But yes can transcode and read ISO DSD files for example.

Can you run MC from a Terminal in the QNAP OS to see what error(s) it pops out? Assuming there is a Terminal, of course.

Same here.
QNAP TS-453A 8GB with 4x3TB WD Red, connected through HDMI-out nr. 1 with a Denon X4000 receiver with HDMI control switched on and a TV connected to HDMI port no. 1 of the Denon.
FIrmware 4.2.1 MC 21.0.28

I have tried reinstalling MC and that seems to work, as long as I don't shut down the QNAP.
After shutting down and starting up the QNAP again, MC only launches after reinstalling again.
Very annoying and reason enough for not buying a MC license key yet.
Any ideas?

Supplement 1-1-2016:
I noticed something strange. When I tried to save a logfile which I wanted to examine in order to see if I could find a reason for the problem I described, I saw that the name of the logfile holds the time and date.
The time however is one hour wrong. It is one hour earlier than the systemtime of my QNAP.
So when I set the systemtime one hour earlier (I couldn't find a way to change the timesetting of HD-station or MC) MC suddenly did start when tried to start it. Problem solved it seems.
Hopefully the real solution from JRiver will come soon now....

Media Center 21 for QNAP does not have theater view.

I guess I don't see the point then. The QNAP has an HDMI for direct connection to a HT screen or AVR.  But there is no MC 10 foot interface to use with the QNAP.  Is there some alternate 10 foot interface that can be used?  Are you expecting to include one in a future build?

You can use another copy of MC to control the one on the QNAP.

You can also use any of MC's remotes to control it.

For info, I've got a QNAP TS-653 Pro running QTS 4.2.0 and HD Station 3.1.2

1st point regarding licence registration that could help others coming along behind.
I worked out that I needed to use lower case for the registration code to be successfully recognised.

So, now I've got MC 21.0.28 successfully installed and registered. I can see an Event Notification in the NAS desktop or QTS from HD Station telling me that the MC installation was successful - just in case you're wondering whether I've got that bit off track.

Unfortunately, I didn't have HD Station set up for multi-tasking. This leads me to a 2nd point for QNAP Noobs like me.

2nd point - I'd suggest for others coming after me that in HD Station that the user navigate to:
   Settings > General > Multi-tasking [Check]
If you don't (well this is what happened to me), if MC needs to bring up a web browser (such as during licence registration), then MC disappears (presumably shutdown ??), while the browser fires up.

This then leads me to my 3rd point, which has got me stuck. So, now with multi-tasking enabled and the NAS rebooted (not just an HD Station restart - I went the whole hog for good measure), I can now bring up multiple applications and there's a multi-tasking bar at the bottom of the screen. Unfortunately, when I double click on the MC icon, I see the Ubuntu style circle of patience fire up and then wait, wait, wait ... the circle disappears and ... nothing.    ?   This has got me stumped (for those outside the Commonwealth that's a cricket reference https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dismissal_%28cricket%29#Law_39:_Stumped (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dismissal_%28cricket%29#Law_39:_Stumped)).

And a 4th point (if I could get there) ...
If I could get back into MC via HD Station, I'd also be querying what's the recommended practice for setting up folder importing. When I did have access to MC the folder import option brought up a Linux style folder structure and I couldn't readily spot the various folders that I can see in QNAP File Station under DataVol1. So, how do I set up the MC library on the QNAP to serve media files out to the network?

Apologies for not having more detail on this one. Probably missed something obvious but I need to deal with the 3rd point above to provide more intel on that score.

Thoughts? Assistance please?

Cheers    ;)

EDIT:
Self help for the 4th point - did miss the obvious being the post that opened this thread (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=101823.0).

Thinking that may work out, I tried it.  I was successful getting Tremote set up to use the server's library on my wifi connected laptop.  It seems to be working.  Still, this gives me the QNAP view on the TV monitor which is pretty useless, along with a desktop view on my laptop to use for control.  It just seems like it would be so much nicer to have that Theater view and not need the laptop.  Perhaps I'll try to virtualize with a windows OS and run MC within that.  But we need to get this "turn off" glitch taken care of ASAP.

Patatorz, from what I can make out from bob's advice is that reinstalling build 28 won't fix the issue if you reboot your QNAP. I think that we'll have to wait until bob & QNAP nut out a solution and issue a new build.

Just so I know going forward,  in the event I do have to re-install MC because the NAS was shutdown, is there a way to preserve all the MC settings on the new install?  QNAP only seems to offer the option to remove or disable meaning you have to completely remove and then reinstall.

Hello all,
First post here for me! I have been watching quietly from the wings, soaking up the knowledge of the forum members. I recently bought a QNAP HS251+ and have loaded it with two WD red 6TB drives in raid1 configuration. The drive is loaded with around 1.5 TB of high res music files in various formats. I have the NAS on my hi-fi rack connected to my Devialet 400 by USB and connected to my TV via HDMI. I use an iPad to control the NAS thus: to bring the NAS out of sleep mode I use the WOL feature of Qmanager. When I get the beep to say it's ready I then switch to Qremote and clicking on the four squares top left brings up the app menu from which I select Media Center 21. I then open the JRemote app and I'm good to go, well, 90% of the time, that is!  Sometimes the app will refuse to load which means that I have to turn the TV on and start the app using Qremote to navigate. If this fails I have to uninstall JRiver using HD Station on my Mac, then reinstall, which is only a two minute job, but a royal pain in the ar*e.

Am I doing everything right? Is there anything I can do to connect the app to the NAS successfully every time or do I have to wait for the next JRiver fix?
TIA to you all!

Title: Re: QNAP Instructions and Questions
Post by: PaulI on February 25, 2016, 09:30:08 pm
I run the HDMI output of the Qnap (451+, 8 gig RAM) into an Emotiva UMC-200.  I am getting frequent dropouts for buffering when playing multichannel music files.  It happens most severely with multichannel SACD ISO's where MC extracts a 1 bit, 352.8 kHz stream from the ISO but then has to convert it to 1 bit 192 kHz for use in my Pre Pro.  Performance is similar if I convert to DSF as well. The dropouts happen less with 24/96 5.1 flacs, although a couple of dropouts per track is still unacceptable.  It happens very rarely, if at all with stereo playback of any bitrate.  When these dropouts happen the server display flashes to say its buffering. I increased pre buffering to the max, enabled read from memory,  maxed out live playback latency and limited output to 192kHz.  Some or all of these changes helped some, but the dropouts are still fairly significant.  Any suggestions on how can I eliminate this problem completely?

I'm becoming more and more convinced that these single box server/NAS QNAP units do not have the processor horsepower to process High Resolution multichannel audio files.  If you are thinking of using this for anything more demanding than 24/48 multichannel flac,  I think you're going to be disappointed.

Upon further review: I have found that the real problem may be this particular implementation of MC. Kodi, which is also bundled with the QNAP servers, does not exhibit these problems. No buffering problems with 24/96 multichannel flac.  No problems with multichannel DSF playback (Kodi does not support SACD ISO).  While doing some resource monitoring while MC is playing, I get huge 90%+ usages on all four processor cores while playing back multichannel SACD ISO.

All sounds rather odd. Thanks for passing on what you know. It's a bit of drag when the communication that you're getting is a cone of silence.

Standing by for the next instalment..

Really annoying for all of those who paid for the license and are expriencing these major problems now. But I understand that this is due to the slow response of QNAP which hopefully finally approve the fix so that I can continue using JRiver the way it's intended to be  :-\

Dear Oerlemans,

Thank you for your email.

JRiver Mediacenter is a paid app after a 30 day trial you have to purchase it.
Did you purchase a license?

Unfortunately we can not deliver support on this Issue if it doesn't work any more.
Please try contacting https://www.jriver.com/

Thank you for your understanding.

Ok - keeping fingers crossed. This is really a show-stopper for me on my QNAP. Especially since I changed my setup to rely on this (qnap/jriver -> amplifier etc.) I am depending on it.
So glad QNAP finally provided some helpfull feedback and you guys are able to fix it. Please just keep us updated when you provide the fix to QNAP so we can follow how long they take for getting in approved / available in the QNAP Appstore.

I've pretty much given up on MC for use with my QNAP 451+.  Beyond the re-install issue,  it couldn't stream 24/96 Flac and much less process SACD ISO without unacceptable dropouts, not to mention the lack of a controllable 10 foot interface.

The drive is loaded with around 1.5 TB of high res music files in various formats. I have the NAS on my hi-fi rack connected to my Devialet 400 by USB

Hello to all of you!
I'm new on this forum, i own a Synology and i use-it to play music through USB interface to an Accuphase DAC 40, exactly like Alex F
Now, i would like to upgrade to an QNAP HS 251+ because it is much quiet and because i understood that JRiver is bit perfect.
I will not use HDMI in any way, the only purpose of the NAS will be (beside the storage) to play music via USB.
I want to ask you few questions:

a) how do i know if my DAC will be recognized by QNAP ?
b) it's there a chance that JRiver could be supported by synology in the future?
c) can i use a USB/SPDIF convertor with JRiver/QNAP (like the one here: http://audiophilleo.com/Audiophilleo2 )
d) how easy will be to install JRiver on HS 251+ ?

Thank you in advance for the answers !!!

Welcome to the fun.

Quickly and to the best of my knowledge ...

a) what's your DAC? Hard to guess on compatibility without detail.
b) one for the devs but anything is possible. Just a question of value and time.
c) I wouldn't know. The Qnap forum might offer answers if you draw a blank here.
d) I didn't find out too hard for a TS653. The key aspect is to remember to do the install with a monitor and keyboard connected. The guide on the qnap website does a pretty good job.

The HD Station interface is useless unless you sit in front of a TV with a wireless mouse and keyboard.
There must be a way to access MC21 through <NAS_IP>:port#      ?

I don't know, but it is probably the processor itself that is the weak link.

The new version of MC (21.0.54) has ironed out a couple of problems that I was having.
1. MC works properly after a NAS shutdown and restart (after quite a long wait for the OS to stabilise)
2. Gapless playback works properly. :D

Happy happy joy joy!

Thanks to all concerned!

To use a license from the command line, open a Terminal and put in the following;

Code: [Select]
mediacenter21 /RestoreFromFile <path to .mjr file>
For the path part, just drag and drop the .mjr license file into the Terminal... assuming the QNAP OS has a file explorer-type of feature. If it doesn't you'll have to type the path in.

Take a look at the recommended compatible hardware list:

M2TECH      hiFace Two           USB DAC
Fostex      HP-A4      USB DAC

Looks like a limited range.

I can't provide better advice than that. I'd expect anything other than the OEM recommendation will be a matter for trial and error.

My USB DACs are not in the list. So the JRiver options on QNAP is not really a solution. I will probably go for the NUC (with Windows 10) option. That gives me everything including Theater View.

I bought a QNAP NAS to replace a Synology one so that I could run the MC Server without requiring a PC to be running and hoping to remove one link in the communication chain.

Alright. I have read the instructions and they are clear. Use HD Station to install a package called Media Centre 21. Only problem is that my new QNAP NAS has no such thing. It has version 4.2.1 of the operating software and is a model TS-563. A search of the QNAP site for Hybrid Diskstation finds several articles including the guide to installing MC 21. Each starts with "use HD Station to ..."

All quite confusing and succeeds only in becoming a circular argument.

Does anyone understand what this is all about? Is there some compatibility issue or requirement that I need to know about?

Circular? I'd say the path that you're sent on is a bit of a dead end.

When I check the relevant page relating to apps for your model, I get this:
https://www.qnap.com/i/en/app_center/index.php?type=5&II=194&for_qts4=&hf= (https://www.qnap.com/i/en/app_center/index.php?type=5&II=194&for_qts4=&hf=)
and MC is listed. So, that tells me you're good to go with the model you've got.

Clicking on the MC icon gives the attached pic. Refer the red box.

When I click on the tutorial, I'm sent to:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Main_Page (http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Main_Page)
Entering the string "qnap" in the Wiki search box yields slim pickings. So, I get your confusion.

What the tutorial link should send you to is this:
https://www.qnap.com/i/en/tutorial/con_show.php?op=showone&cid=196 (https://www.qnap.com/i/en/tutorial/con_show.php?op=showone&cid=196)
which is where I was expecting to be sent to, so I'm guessing the link was redirected at some stage or my memory is failing me.

Regardless, I'd recommend 2 things:
1. The qnap link should be fixed so that it points the user to a sensible location for helpful info, i.e. the qnap link (https://www.qnap.com/i/en/tutorial/con_show.php?op=showone&cid=196).
2. The Interact Wiki include a reference to the qnap link (https://www.qnap.com/i/en/tutorial/con_show.php?op=showone&cid=196) - which would provide more circle and less argument.

I have a QNAP TS-453A. It is connected to a Yamaha RX-V673 receiver through HDMI.
I have installed JRiver in HD station and set
Audio device hdmi:CARD=PCH,DEV=0 [ALSA]
Sample rate: no change for all input
Channels: Source number of channels
Bitstreaming: YES (HDMI)

If I am playing a bluray with TruHD of DTS-HD MA track, sampling rate and surround are OK, audio path says direct, no changes are being made. However my receiver indicates that the format is PCM, while if I use JRiver on a windows machine, it indicates TruHD or DTS-HD MA.
What could be the problem? Thanks.

Just to note for the record, my QNAP TS-653Pro was stuck trying to upgrade to MC21 Build 91.

I ended up downloading the Build 91 module, from the App Centre as a standalone:
QNAP MC21 App (https://www.qnap.com/en-au/app_center/con_show.php?op=showone&internalName=MediaCenter21&version=21.0.91&down_1_name=TS-251&jump_win=1&II=150&qts=4.2.2&seq=179)
and uploaded the module manually. Seems to have installed without issue (untested).

Apologies if I missed the memo on this one (somebody else may have already reported a similar experience). It would probably help if there was a dedicated QNAP (and if other NAS units are added chuck those in too) discussion board. I know it's a Linux based build but similar to the Id, it's not the same beast...   :)

Maybe set the DSP studio output encoding to DSD in DoP?
Linux can only do DSD in DoP through alsa.

I must say that since I had an issue with my Rio Karma, many many years ago,  there was no need for me to use the interact forum actively.
But now I bought a Qnap TS-451+ (2GB) also because its ability to use Media Center.
I installed it from the Qnap app-center. I also bought a master license for MC22 (Windows and Linux)
I removed Media Center from my Qnap because it was expired and I would install MC22 only to find that MC21 was still current.
No sign of it in the Qnap app-center anymore. Even the link posted by Astromo on September 30  (QNAP MC21 app) is now linked to Photo-station....

Is there a way to install MC21 again?

Thanks!

Thanks!
Interesting.
I haven't heard anything from them.
I'll ask.

Nothing yet.
Here is a link to the last build they posted. You will have to install it manually.

Here is a link to the latest MC 21 build for QNAP. Same as above, install manually.

Hello, I'm not sure if there is a reason why JRiver is not anymore on qnap app center but it seems that we can install manually.

Is there any plan to move to MC22 as I upgraded my master licence from 21 to 22 ?

This is from Qnap Forum:

Quote
Dear customer,

QNAP has ended support for the following apps and they have been removed from the HD Station:

- KODI / XBMC
- MediaCenter21

Therefore we are unable to provide further assistance regarding these apps.

Additionally, the HD Player application is temporarily removed from the HD Station and will be re-added at a later date. Support for HD Player will continue as normal.

Please see below for some alternative apps to use:

1. Use Linux Station to install a multimedia player in the Ubuntu virtual machine and play video content

2. Use Plex Home Theater (install it in HD Station) to play video content

3. Search online forums for 3rd party multimedia apps for HD Station

We thank you for continuing to use QNAP products.

What do you recommend? does this mean that I have to use JRiver just as a client and rely on Qnap media server? I am confused then.

Too many servers around ;)

what about minim? I read it is great for classical music.

thanks

I've recently purchased a QNAP TS-451+ to use as a media server.  I've installed MC22 and I've gotten it to open and import files so it's working properly.  I'm just having a lot of problems trying to install the registration.  I've got a master license so it should work.  I've gotten the key but the install within MC22 allows me to enter the key but then doesn't do anything after that.  I've downloaded a key via Chrome but can't find it when I open the download forlder fiel File station and the link to open up the containing folder in Chrome doesn't work.  Even if I could get to the file, I'm not sure where to move it to get it to work.

Any help is appreciated.

Also I don't see how to active MC 22 as a media server.  The normal link under Tools -> Advanced or Options -> Advanced (I can't remember which) is missing.

To the best of my knowledge, a qpkg for MC23 hasn't been released. Nor have I seen mention of a release.

Looking at this a bit today.
MC23 for AMD64 is now compiled on a version of debian that's not compatible with the QNAP's version of linux (which is ubuntu 14.04).
I tried to see if the i386 build (compiled on a compatible version of debian) would run on it but no luck, QNAP is missing some of the compatibility libraries.

Hi Patrick,
The compile environment for MC23 is no longer compatible with the ubuntu release on the QNAP so we won't be doing a HDStation build of MC23 for the QNAP.
If you want to run MC23 you'll need to use a docker image.
There will be an update to the MC22 QNAP build to fix a couple of bugs discovered in the MC23 development process.

My MC 21 for QNAP has gotten unstable and crashes. Ideally I would like to use my master license for MC 23 and install that on my QNAP. Here is the response from QNAP:

Hi Kurt,

It depends on the install type that you have. Our QNAP device only accepts apps that are .qpkg format, so if you can find a version of Media Center 23 that is in that format, then it will work. You would have to find this file from the Media Center webpage itself though, we don't provide that.

Best regards,

Please advise if there is any chance MC 23 will work on my QNAP. If not I need help reinstalling MC 21 (21 license came with QNAP but I purchased a 23 master thinking I could use it on QNAP as well as PC).

Cheers,

Kurt

Hi I am new to this forum & am not sure if this is the right place to ask this question.

I have had MC (ver 22)working within (QNAP 453A) HDstation using a master license. Had a corruption on my NAS and had to rebuild, now MC within HDstation will not accept my master license, 'license for another product' message. Can someone advise how to fix this please?

QNAP TS-453A
Firmware ver: 4.3.4.0427
HD Station: 3.2.3
MC (qpkg): MediaCenter22_22.0.48_x86_64
MC license: Media Center23 Master-380233

I have also tried MediaCenter22_22.0.111-5_x86_64.

I can provide preliminary confirmation of a bust on my Qnap TS-653 Pro running:
Firmware v4.3.4
HD Station v3.2.3
MC22 MediaCenter22_22.0.111-5_x86_64.qpkg

My Windows HTPC is no longer seeing the MC server on the Qnap NAS. I've done a reinstall of the qpkg but no change.

When I get off Daddy day care, Dad duty, I'll try logging into the Qnap via HD Station directly and see what it says. I'll report back with what I find, when I can - unless I get gazzumped and anyone out there feel free to jump in.

I suspect that with the change of Firmware / HD Station that occurred over the Christmas / New Year period, MC got the short shrift. You can probably point the finger at Intel's Meltdown (even if it's not justified) to be partly responsible.

The MC qpkg has been on borrowed time after Qnap did the dirty on JRiver, so I'm not holding out high hopes that Bob is going to burn a lot of effort to get this one sorted in quick smart time (unfortunately). On the upside, it's pretty easy to run MC in pull mode (my Qnap NAS shows up as a Samba file source, which is how I typically drag in video to my HTPC), so no biggie. You can also always run a VM on the Qnap if you've got the RAM and the rest, then set up a Linux (or Windows if you really want) instance and get a NAS based server operating that way. From a speed/bandwidth perspective, this only really makes sense to me if it's for audio. Video could work (not something I've tested) but I have my doubts.

EDIT: The bust was addressed by restarting the instance of MC. In my case, I went back to basics and reinstalled the qpkg. Logged into HD Station and started MC with no problem. The Qnap instance of MC shows up as a server in my local MC network.

Just had a trouble with my QNAP HS 251+, so I had to reload MC22 qpkg onto it. I now discover that I could not load a DLNA Library (Twonky media) because when I try MC gets stuck with no other possibility than hard reset of the NAS. Do you this issue that is new to me because before my NAS problem it was working ?is there any update available in QPKG form for qnap MC22 installed ?
Thanks

I'm Amazed to read such a message, i can inderstand you don't want to develop further QPKG version, but for the current ones that all QNAP nas owners payed to get them , i reckon a minimum of support is due. Last message I received from Bob was relating to a possible update for the last MC22 for qnap, that's the reason for my message, as the current one does not work properly.
I owned also MC21 and MC23 for windows, JRiver made advertising for MC24 bit I'll wait a bit before before going to it.
Thanks anyway for your support
Patrick

Well, there's the Docker alternative (https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,109810.0.html), which is likely your best bet trying to run MC on a NAS, especially newer MC but it's likely considered unsupported. Otherwise JRiver doesn't recommend installing MC on QNAP devices anymore (https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,114219.0.html). Personally, I don't think it's worth the trouble trying to install and run MC from a NAS anyways, when you can do it instead from a Raspberry Pi or an Id (https://jriver.com/Id/).

I recently bought qnap TS53B and installed mc21 and tried to purchase licence. It says it is not available for sale. Purchased a linux licence separately and tried to activate and error message says it is not compatible. How to resolve this issue. I have a master licence for mc23 which runs perfect in my pc.

I'd suggest that you try using Build 114 ... it *should* work with an MC23 licence but don't complain to me if it doesn't. I've got an MC22 licence and 114 installs fine on my TS-653Pro.

This archived info from Qnap might help ... dunno ... just throwing it in there cos' it dredged itself up when I Duck-Duck'ed it.
