Title: Animated Gifs
Post by: Omni on March 04, 2017, 08:59:49 pm
I'm still on version 20.  Has animated gif support been added yet, i.e., to version 21 or 22?

I see GIF listed under Options > File Types, so it's likely. You can try MC 22 and try it for yourself.

In an old thread, Matt said that you could play them by changing the media type to video.  I haven't tried that but it might work.

Yeah, I found that thread in my search prior to creating this thread, but that was back in the v.20 forum.  I was hoping native support was added in v.21 or v.22 without having to jump through hoops to trick MC into playing the animation.  ;)  Also, I'm not even sure that will work.

It looks like there's a little problem with this.

Coming next build:
Fixed: Switching the media type of a GIF to video wouldn't start it playing in the video engine.

No.

Just change the [Media Type] tag in MC. But, apparently there is a bug so it doesn't work until the next build.

And we'll try to do even one better in a future build:
Changed: Made importing an animated GIF file automatically set the media type to video.

Just a little note that there was some debate internally about my change, so I switched it so that the files still import as an image but at playback time the engine will be switched to the video engine.  Hopefully everybody is happy now!

No love for the superior Animated PNG (APNG) format? :P Chrome 59 should support it by default (leaving only Edge as the only mainstream browser without support).

If this means that I can just double-click an animated gif (without fumbling about in its properties) and MC will automatically "play" it, then yes, I'm very happy.  :)  Thanks!  I'll upgrade to v.22 this weekend.

It sure does.

Just a heads up that the change is coming in build 22.0.79, which we haven't released yet.

Okay, ten months later, I finally upgraded to your latest release, namely, v.23.0.91 (64-bit).  Not only are animated gifs not being imported as video media types (which is fine... maybe you changed your mind about that feature), but worse, I can't view them at all.  I just get a black display.  (They play fine in various other image viewers including Windows' default Photo viewer.)

Thumbnails are created just fine, so it's not like MC is having trouble reading the file; it just won't play (or display) them.  It doesn't matter if I set the media type to 'Video' or leave it as 'Image'.

Is this a known issue?

ETA:  Also, the same files at least display the first image frame in my older MC (v.20.0.132).  They don't animate, but that was the reason for this thread in the first place, so we already knew that.  8)

Omni,
Please post any MC23 bugs in the build threads on the MC23 board.

Is possible to use the .gif in the <img src>?. Right now is possible to add but is just a simple jpg and does not play as animated gif.
