Title: NEW: Enhanced Tag Window
Post by: Matt on December 18, 2017, 02:32:49 pm
As part of MC23, we feature a new tagging window in the Action Window.

It's extremely flexible, so hopefully you can tweak and customize it to your liking.

Open the tag window, then click the icon at the top left and pick “Customize...”.  With that tool you can completely customize what tags appear and for what files.

There's a list of templates, and you can add new templates.  The templates are evaluated in order until one with a matching search is found.  As a simple example, the search [Media Type]=[Image] is used to flag the “Image” template.

Then on any template, you can add any fields.  There are also some special additions including “Add Visible Fields”, “Add All Fields”, “Add Fields With Values”, “Add Playlists”, “Add Image”, and “Add Tag Dump”.

You can also add any individual field in the library or even an expression.

The expanded and collapsed states of the groups in the tag window should be remembered between runs and opens.

The “Tag Dump” is an output from the file of all the tags in the file.  It will be a little different for every file type but it includes all the tag information from the file.

The “Add Fields With Values” only shows library fields that have a value, so it's a nice way to see a condensed list of options.

The “Add Visible Fields” option shows the fields that are visible in your library view.  That way you can customize both your visible columns and the tags to show at the same time.

If you have any questions or requests about the new window, post them here.  Thanks.

The customize capability is really useful. It takes a couple of tries to decide how best to use it, but once set up it really helps.

Can you change Tag Dump to something more descriptive. That is the term that has been used in MC for years, but it really does not tell a new user what it does. Something like Tags in File or even Tag Dump from File would be more useful.  My guess is that new users have no idea what it means when the first see it.

Thanks for the updated Tag window.

Just had a thought or improvement idea. On audio tags, recently I added a few albums that have a name for the disk one, disk 2 in a set. eg. George Michael Ladies and Gentlemen. Tom Tom Club.

Ca the disk number tag be changed to an alpha numeric so I can enter the name of the disk?  I know there are work arounds with other tags but this would be more elegant?

Hi

I'd be grateful if you could add on  [Edit in Popup] in Comment field, like a Description tag.

Thank you

Am I missing something?

I don't seem to be able to switch between templates to actually USE them?

I am able to select template to edit and can create template, but I am stuck on the top template and unable to switch to another.

I select 'Customize'.
It brings up the Customize window and my current template is listed with a drop down menu showing all others.

Choosing a different template from the drop down menu brings up that template to edit.

When I hit 'Ok' and exit out of the Customize window, my template NEVER CHANGES TO ANOTHER.

You have to click on "manage" and then "edit template" to specify a rule for the type of files that template applies to.

Thank you very much!

I just missed that piece.

I was hoping to just flip the tag editing templates around by selecting them on the fly, didn't know I had to set parameters so the editing templates 'just work'.

Think I can get this to work for most situations.
I do like flipping around 'tag views' depending on my editing task even in the same media type.
Was doing this before by adding all fields I wanted in the detail view, saving it as a preset, then loading 'show tags in current view'.
Was not pretty, or fun.

Will play around with this new feature and see if I can make it all work for me.

Adjusted template for (media sub type = audio books) AND boom got my AUDIO BOOK tag template up front and center, so that works!

THANKS SO MUCH!

I like the new tag editor quite a bit.

Works great!

A question though - can you consider adding this feature as a pop-up window rather than having in displayed in the left panel (or a choice on how it should behave)? I typically hide the very left panel and just display the middle (files etc.) and right (playing now), which seems like a very sleek design for me! ;) However under such arrangement, whenever I want to edit tags, a left panel goes unhidden automatically and I need to hide it back manually after I'm done.

Another vote to unlock the Tag from the left panel.
Maybe non modal tagging/properties window, like foobar.
But anyway... it's already great!... great improvement from the older version...many thanks!

Ctrl left click?

Tried ctrl left clicking all over the place but couldn't find a spot that when clicked gave me the old type list  :P :)

On the Tag item in the action window.  It could be alt left click.

I believe it's shift-click on the Tag item in the menu

Is there a way to move the SEARCH field, or even hide it? I have not found a use for it, yet I'm struggling to avoid Search when I really mean to use Add.

When I'm working in a long-ish field such as Keywords, the Add field often gets pushed out of sight, leaving the Search field sitting there. When I click to Add, I end up in Search, a very different thing. When I try to scroll to bring Add into view, it is difficult/clumsy. I then have to expand the Tag box from half-height to full-height, which covers up the tree I'm using to navigate. Arghh.

Two wishes:
- Allow Search to be hidden or located somewhere else in the Tag box.
- Allow Tag box to be resized, not just half or full height. Even better is to allow it to float.

Hi there,
I think I'm missing something really basic here.  I have been using MC for well over a decade and I just loaded MC24 onto a new pc.  I have a custom preset I use to view my audio files because I have a lot of custom tagging.  It used to be that when I hit alt-enter on a file, the tag action window would show just the tags of my preset view.  With this new tag window, I can't figure out how to activate that functionality any longer.  I tried customizing the audio template for the tag view and I clearly deleted some essential tag because I got nothing in the tag action view when I saved the audio template which I assume means that for some reason once I edited down the template, my mp3 files were no longer a match even though file type is one of the fields in my template.  What am I missing here?
Thanks,
Suzie

As a temporary workaround (since nobody knows how long the old tag window will remain) you can press and hold Shift while right clicking on media > Tag option to open it in the old tag window. It *should* keep using the old tag window as long as it remains an option in the app, and you can toggle back to the new tag window by doing the same thing.

True, but Suzie was sooo close...

My advice would be...

Go back to where you tried to customise the audio template...
Top right, there's a "Manage" button, click that, then choose the bottom option "Reset All Templates to Default". (To fix anything you might have broken earlier)
Next, make sure you're working on the "Audio" template (check it shows "Audio" top left, use the dropdown list to choose audio if it does not).
Click the "Add" button.
Choose "Visible Fields" from the menu
OK your way out.

You should now see a "Visible fields" group in your tag window. Expand that, and it should be job done.

Hi Marko,
Thank you for your help.  Yes, I prefer to find a way to work with the modification so I am not surprised after an "upgrade."  I would like there to be an easy way to do this.  I just went through and deleted all of the sections except the Visible Fields and now the Tag Center is back to just the fields I want to see.  I appreciate the power of the new version and there should also be a way of deleting blocks of tags in the view rather than me having to go through and delete each tag.

Thanks!

Are you working on a client?  If so, the views are loaded from the server.
