Title: NEW: Streaming
Post by: JimH on April 07, 2018, 04:40:49 pm
All of the former "Connect Media" services are now under one top-level section called Streaming.

All audio, video, and image services are in one place now.  If you don't have MC24 installed, you can see the page here (https://jriver.com/streaming/).

When you play anything from a browser page, you will be able to go to a full screen browser by hitting F11.  This makes YouTube, for example, a better experience.

We've also moved Podcasts to this section.  I realize this may be controversial, but we're going to try it.

We've added a "premium" radio station, called Radio Paradise.  It's lossless (FLAC) and listener supported.  I'd like to add a few more, but not so many that it becomes cluttered.

Your suggestions are welcome, as always.

Just wondering - is it YouTube.com or YouTube.com/tv? If I could make a case for /tv as it’s far better with remote controls.

Probably just youtube.com.  Can you describe the difference?

Probably just youtube.com.  Can you describe the difference?

https://youtube.com/tv is designed as their television interface, and is compatible with remote controls, for the most part in keeping with JRs "5 button"
approach.

It also lets you "pair" from a device and control playback - like casting but without a chromecast.

For use on HTPCs, there's really no choice - the TV interface really is that much better than the standard web interface.

I've mentioned it before as an alternative to the standard theater view youtube interface. If we could put it in theater view and have it auto f11 to full screen display view (take focus so the remote would work) it would be FANTASTIC.

minor Q... is radio paradise meant to show the website or play the flac stream? it does the former atm

24.0.11 has all of the services in one place, but the page isn't finished.  We're going to have a simpler page with just the logos of each service.  When you click on one, you'll jump to their web site.
do you mean a panel like webpage? I'm not sure how you envisage navigation working atm

As it stands, it isn't quite full screen because a tab bar remains at the top and which, as far as I can see, exists to provide access to back/forward/refresh buttons, i.e. a subset of the navigation functions. You also get the jriver OSD when the mouse goes into that area towards the top of the screen.

I think the aforementioned youtubetv interface would work better, i.e. get rid of the tab bar and replace with keyboard shortcuts. I'd also add keyboard shortcuts to switch sites as atm you have to exit full screen mode, pick another site and then return to full screen mode (whereas you can still edit the streaming sites from full screen mode which is probably not something one would do often). One way to do that would be to leave the top tab bar in place but prepopulate it with a tab per defined site (or the first n). The jriver OSD probably needs to disappear too (or be integrated into that tab bar).

Having said all that, I think these sorts of changes would be better applied to theatre view so that theatre view is the one 10ft interface for all of this stuff, i.e. a more integrated way to view such content and have jriver be able to report on what it is playing via MCWS (and then switch to other stuff accessed via theatre view without needing any external apps). It also occurs to me this is exactly why I wrote https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,114198.0.html (which from another point of view is "take tight control over what the WDM driver is playing")

It will be the FLAC stream for Radio Paradise.

The interface will be more Panel-like than it is now.  It probably can't be that simple.  It will be easy to use with a touch screen.

We may add it to Theater View as well.

Since these services are playing through your internal browser can you somehow route the audio through the DSP? Currently connected media doesn't go through the JRiver audio stack.

You could use MC's WDM to play the audio from the browser.

https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/WDM_Driver

Ya I have used the WDM driver in the past and it mostly works but I had stability issues with it. Also problems with A/V sync even with adjusting buffer sizes. This may have been due to other issues on the computer I was testing it on though.

What made me decide to not use it though was mainly this. I also like to use JRSS in DSP but with WDM it's too limiting because JRSS treats all audio from WDM as "Music" and I watch and listen to a lot dialog centric content. JRSS treats audio files differently than video files and when listening to dialog through JRSS when it is being treated like music doesn't sound right. There is no way to switch or force JRSS into one of these two modes. I believe it decides which mode to work in based on the "media type" tag. MC automatically gives the WDM stream a media type of audio which forces JRSS to treat it as music. If we were allowed to modify the WDM media type tag to "Video" then we could choose how JRSS treats the stream but currently you cannot change this tag at all.

I agree with others, youtube.com/tv really should be used, not the standard youtube.com page. If the internal browser can be integrated into theater view as well this combination would make youtube much more seamless and a "part" of MC/thearter view. The current youtube implementation in theater view is very lacking.

Unless the browsers expose an interface to do that, thats not going to be possible - and so far, they don't.

I just upgraded from MC23 to MC24 (for MAC, but that is not relevant here) and have a question about streaming. General question: what is the use of streaming within MC24. It seems just another browser and the audio does not pass through MC. For instance, how is the Youtube within MC "superior" to Youtube through Chrome. One big (negative) difference is my adblocker. The adblocker does not work within MC, which makes the Youtube experience horrible (if you are used to an adfree Youtube).

Just updated to version 24 today. First time I clicked on the RP stream resulted in JR crashing, I started it again and clicked the RP button again, it seemed to hang again and I thought it had crashed but then it started playing and currently working. Stopping the streaming and playing something else, then going back to it, now seems to launch quick. Maybe just the first time loading.

Very happy and sounds great, Radio Paradise is the best station I have ever listened to.

Has JRiver looked into streaming Qobuz? It blows away Tidal, and is by far the best HD system for Streaming Flacs and downloading HD content. As long as you use a VPN to subscribe, it is perfect in the US. It is global already almost everywhere but the US. Once subscribed with VPN and you use a UK or French server, from then on you don't need VPN.

RadioParadise in Flac is great!!!

I hope there are further developments here, like the availability of RP's awesome hi-def slideshow, perhaps?

I do notice some minor glitches, skips & dropouts which seem related to song change, but otherwise nice work indeed.

Thanks for the new stations.  Radio Swiss is very nice.

How do we get Radio Paradise on the list of "Featured Websites"?  I'm right-clicking on "Streaming".  RP is not listed on the drop-down.

I figured-out that right-clicking on the drop-down will select/de-select the stations.

From the tree you can add new websites, which appear in the tree. However, they do not seem to appear in the view display.

When a featured website is deselected, it disappears from the tree but not from the view display.  It seems deselecting should affect both displays.

Podcasts have a sub-menu. How can I create that for an entry I add?

Radio Paradise is on right.  The drop down method won't be the main way to connect in the future.

Part of what we're doing is making it touch screen friendly.

OK.  Understood.  But for us non-touch-screeners, it would be nice to have within the tree.  And the other choices are already there.   :)

Or, the ability to pin a given station to the toolbar.  Just trying to make it easy.

Over the years I've found it difficult to find really good streaming sites.  RP and FIP are both excellent, IMO.

And Boss Radio is pretty good... if you're old.   ;D

Probably because it requires protected content plugin which the Chromium browser in MC doesn't have. Same with Spotify, Netflix and basically any of the big streaming providers.

I read elsewhere on the forums that the Id isn't meant to be a streaming device. Which I don't understand because it obviously has providers under "streaming." Then I read more that said Pandora is a company which is losing money so JRiver doesn't want to align themselves with same. Whatever the reason, I guess the Id mirrors Mediacenter and Mediacenter doesn't support Pandora either.

In the 24.0.20 announcement thread, it is stated that user defined stations will not display in the Streaming page.  It is also stated that the items on the Streaming page will not go away if you deselect that item. That means, that the tree display will represent the users selections, but the large icon view will not.  It will be static with all the JRiver defined entries but will not adjust to user input.

In my opinion, this is not a good user interface decision.  My primary use would not be for JRiver defined entries, yet that is what I will see on the main display.

I think the main view, Streaming page should reflect the user selections. Please consider changing it to do that.

What we've done so far is this:

Collected all of the streaming features in one place.  That includes Podcasts.

Built a visual, touch friendly interface for these.

Added Radio Paradise, FIP, BBC World Service, and Radio Swiss Classic.

A lot of changes to support Radio Paradise.  It's pure FLAC streaming.

Modified Streaming in the tree so it doesn't also expand.

We will try to do some of what you want in the near future.

I'd like to find a way to get the streaming interface working in Panel.

For me that would mean the ability to navigate to different streaming sites in the theater view interface while using a remote control.  Doing so without changing views (I.E. changing to the standard view interface or any others) and providing the ability to pause/play/ff/rw would be the most helpful.  Is this something you will consider even if you don't want to do it anytime too soon?

WDM apparently works with with Qobuz 24/44 and 24/48 but not with 24/96

And please, don't forget an ergonomic operability in theater mode.

+1 as at the moment I can't use this feature on my HTPC.

Also, it seems to play through the Windows sound system rather than JRiver, what's up with that?

The WDM driver needs to be fixed for that to be an option.

Nice Interface!  Since you have Radio Swiss Classic, I would highly recommend adding Radio Swiss Jazz:

http://www.radioswissjazz.ch/en

24x7 Great jazz, commercial free.  Amongst my two favorite online radio stations (the other being Radio Paradise).

Thanks!

Qobuz is superb. I’ve been using for a couple of years and it is just the case that I now I use it more than MC, by a fair margin. It was flakey with WDM, and in any case had no acceptable way I could find of remote controlling it. It would be wonderful to integrate Qobuz, MC and JRemote.

If you call a section “streaming” people like me at least will expect it to support well known streaming services like Tidal and Qobuz.

Any chance for Mixcloud or Soundcloud to be added to the list please  :)

Up to my neck with my new job, but tried this for the first time this evening...

Radio Paradise working a treat. Very good.

Was thrilled to see Pix01 and last.fm in there, however....

I can't log in to either service using the page presented inside MC.
Pix01 pops a new internet explorer window for logging in (even though Firefox is my default), which works, but is not reflected inside MC.
last.fm shows the login page inside MC, but then returns an access denied page.

See, now, if the login could work, imagine how neat it would be to be able to browse my Flickr library from inside MC... or my Google photos...

Security is essential, but also a right royal PITA.
I don't use Dr. Who because the password is in my password manager, I could never remember it. Password manager isn't available from the internal MC page, the "Remember me" tick box doesn't remember me, and it's too much hassle to keep delving into the password mananger to copy/paste the password... so I don't use it.

I want to give MC the credentials for these places, be able to trust MC with said credentials, and never have to think about them again. Seamless integration to my online stuff from within MC would be an excellent thing...

A pipe dream?

On the icon interface, the icons are evenly spaced in the first 2 lines, but centered in the last line. That makes the whole interface somewhat jarring. Rather than centering the last line, left justifying the icons would make for a more pleasing display.  Look at a typical MC Album view. The last line is not centered, it is left justified.  Makes it easier to read.

Any progress on having the icon interface reflect the user selected items in the tree?  Having the icon interface be mostly items I do not use and having most of the ones I do use not displayed makes the interface pretty useless.  The items I added should also be displayed in the icon view, which means a way to add a image for the icon would also be useful.

1.  Plays everything.
4.  Delivers high quality audio and video

I've been buying/using MC for many years for the 2 reasons above + the perfect handling of metadata + syncing my files to OneDrive. I bought MC 23 to support JRiver although there was nothing new for 1) or 4). I've been waiting for a more major UI overhaul (I've seen other users asking for the same) but sadly in MC 24, the only change in that direction is a new skin. I do sincerely hope that the majority of the other users are satisfied with the direction of the new features but this time, I cannot justify the upgrade... I use MC to play/watch movies on a single computer, I have a NAS for all my media, I use spotify to stream music - nothing fancy, and sadly all the web/network features do not resonate with me.

I was so pleased to see Radio Paradise as a FLAC stream! Longtime supporter of Radio Paradise myself (highly recommended). The fidelity of the FLAC Playback is exceptional!

I have encountered a playback issue whereby first FLAC song streams/plays flawlessly until the final 10 seconds. With approximately 10 seconds remaining-  playback stops while next track downloads (1MBs ). The gap in playback lasts for ~15 seconds and then playback resumes - completing last 10 seconds of the first track and continues playback of the second track - until the last 10 seconds of the second track remaining with playback pausing until download of the third track and the process repeats.

Please let me know if there’s something I can do with buffering etc. to get subsequent tracks to download prior to changing to the next track? I am using Media Center 24.0.27 (64-bit). Platform is extremely stable. My download speed is reliably 8 Mb per second with no meaningful overhead. Any help that can point me in the right direction is greatly appreciated!

If you're using Play from Memory, please turn that off.  A future version will do this automatically.

I think it was said already, "radio paradise" with or without  memory "bug"
briskly a new version for this problem to be fixed

Thanks for reply,
"Memory playback (not zone specific): No memory playback"?

Clearly this is not "typical" streaming architecture
"additive" playlist build in Playing Now vs. steady streaming (single playing item)?
Most interesting!
Fidelity is BIG vs. 320k from Radio Paradise link.
How may I help?

Just updated to MC24.0.30 (64-bit) and still have Huge latency problem between FLAC tracks with playback stoping for 25 sec. while completeing download of next track?

Progressive Rock in lossless?  I would never need another station!  I currently do Aural Moon.  If I could get that in lossless you would have a subscriber for life.  Thanks.

Hi,

Is it possible to remove streaming sources from the streaming web page?

Thank you!

Unless the browsers expose an interface to do that, thats not going to be possible - and so far, they don't.

I like the idea of Streaming being in one place where users can add/remove their own links.  This works fine for audio streaming, but not so well with video streaming.  Rather than asking development to jump through a lot of hoops to to support video streaming, why not just shell out to the user's default browser and play it there?  In the dialog box to add new links, you could have a check box to indicate that this link should be shelled out to a browser.

Adding stream URLs directly would be nice for sure.

If I want to load DI.FM in a web browser I'll use my web browser, I don't need  MC for that.

What would be nice is if  JRiver could somehow negotiate with some of the smaller stream providers (like D.FM)  who have their own Apps,  so clearly have an API of some sort that would let users login and have similar functionality as from a mobile App.

So instead of going through a web browser interface, I could just select a "view"  for DI.FM,  which after being setup with my credentials, would show me  channels I can select,  or isolate to my favorites,  and while playing, display the track info / album etc, etc..

Just an idea I know its probably a lot more complicated than that.   But  something along those lines,  or at least being able to add my exported StreamURL w/decryption key and then just select what I want from a Playlist.

All of the former "Connect Media" services are now under one top-level section called Streaming.  ....
I am using MC 24 ( current) to stream Napster along with all my actual music files.
The streaming issue seems nice, in that it allows one control center....but what about the music quality..? When streaming, if you pull up tools and Options...then audio and hit DSP and output....normally you see the music actually running through JRiver...but with Streaming, nothing appears to be running through it, and  if you hit the Equalizer, which I don't normally use, it will do nothing to the music...This leads me to believe that Napster is not really playing through the dramatically improved playback engine of JRiver, and there is no music benefit to playing a stream through JRiver...? It is worth mentioning that for Spotify, a 3rd party app exists.... http://fidelify.net/   ...< Fidelify uses Spotify Core to deliver streaming content directly to the soundcard, using either ASIO or WASAPI. This enables the user to easily avoid sampling conversion or mixing, ensuring a bit perfect stream.

Fidelify also supports convolution of the audio stream, to allow real time FIR filtering for active crossovers or room correction, and a VST plugin socket to apply third party DSP effects.>   And of course, this was what I was hoping for with JRiver and streaming.
