Title: Panel in MC24
Post by: JimH on April 26, 2018, 09:12:39 am
Panel for MC24 has already had many improvements since it was first introduced in MC23.

Instructions (https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,116687.msg806546.html#msg806546)

Here's the original thread on Panel (https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,105883.0.html).

Panel is a web app.  It's part of MC, and it allows you to connect to MC from any browser on any device.

Recent improvements include:

Context menu for Playback
Click on an audio track to get the menu.  Choose Add to Playing Now, Play with Playdoctor, etc.

Ratings
Click on the stars to rate a track.  The rating is synced with the server if you have set authentication and log when you use Panel.  The rating has a small delay before being displayed.

Themes
You can set a light background (shown above) in Settings.

Radio JRiver

Radio Paradise

Other Streaming
Works only on the server at this time.

Minor GUI issue: can the rating stars be made consistent looking? It seems there's a fix distance to the play duration. Please see the screenshot for reference.

Small improvement or question: Instead of playing file -> playing title?

The rating stars are a nice addition. An idea: Would it make sense to fill the stars with a solid color when the mouse hovers over them? I think it might provide usability benefits.

Please consider making Panel remember the position (in the library) when the user clicks on an album (in album view) or on an artist (in artist view) and "jumps" into the new page/selection.
It gets tiresome pretty fast to browse the music collection from the beginning on each time when I click on the back arrow after I selected a track in a particular album.

Really glad to see the context menu added. I'm not seeing Play Doctor as an option, though.

Here are my options in 24.0.19

Play(file)
Play(all)
Add file (to end)
Add file (play next)
Add all (to end)

Any chance we'll be able to personalize the context menu with Play Options from the client? For example, these options would cover 99% of my mobile listening:

Play (with Play Doctor)
Add file (as next to play)
Add album

Suggestion for Panel, faster navigation between artist, album, genre etc. without the need to jump several pages back or through home button.

any chance you can fix the artwork such that movie posters and tv show cover art is proper ratio and not square?

Using Panel in Chrome on my Android phone (Galaxy S9+) have become REALLY sluggish.
Sometimes have to touch a title 10 times or hold and then release to make the context menu appear...
In Chrome on my PC works fine. Also did not have a problem in MC23.

Are you connected via your LAN?  Or via Internet?

What browser are you using?  It may not like the popup.  You could try another browser.

This actually wasn't a lag issue, but it was a bug that should be fixed in 24.0.27. For now, you can prevent this issue by pressing on the desired track in the area the Play menu will appear in.

Is it possible to add an info or metadata link to the context menu?  I don't think it needs to be as robust as the one you see in JRemote but have playcount, last played, file type for sure and maybe bitdepth and samplerate.

If it had this I would abandon the JRemote and EOS remotes.  With each release of JRiver they become slower and buggier anyway.

Firstly Kudos

I missed MC23 but subscribed again at MC24, the 64 bit version of JRiver is worth the price of entrance alone.  Great JRiver stability on my HTPC.  Great work guys.   Thank You.

Have started using panel from inside My network and connecting to the HTPC Main JRiver/ Library using the Access key method.  Running Panel on other computers all connected by Gigabit Ethernet to the HTPC.  HTPC is dedicated with 16 GB RAM, i5 processor, Nvidia Graphics card etc etc and running 64 Bit Windows 10.   Browser used both Edge and Chrome.

All I can get when in Panel and in the settings menu (the gear) and under Audio Quality, High, is 320 Kbps MP3, no Flac at all and most of my library is Flac.

I have looked about in JRiver Options, Media network, DNLA, on the HTPC JRiver/ Library server to try change this but have not been successful, perhaps I am missing something?  Or is that limit by design?  Please note I am playing over my internal network over wired connections, Gigabit Ethernet, CAT6 cabling etc.

As a test I also launched panel from the Options, Media network menu on the HTPC JRiver itself so no network to take into account and have the same limitation both testing in Edge and Chrome.  Chrome is the preferred browser on my computers.

Appreciate some feed back, thanking you in advance.

Thanks for the kind words.

When you're playing "Here", you're using the HTML5 capabilities of the browser.  It's possible, but not certain, that this could support FLAC.  We're investigating the possibility now.  If so, we'll add it.

Thank You Jim

I see that MC24.34 update has this change implemented.  Thank you again for that.   Much appreciated

How does one see what format the playing file is from within panel to confirm it is happening, ie source file in FLAC and Panel is playing FLAC and not transposed to MP3?

At the moment, the only way to check is to use the browser's developer tools. One way is to look at the response header of the GetFile request in the Network tab in the browser's developer tools.

Would like to see Seasons supported for recorded TV Shows.   Also would like to see a check or indicator of movies/shows watched, just as they appear on the computer-based center.

Radio JRiver (https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,116509.msg805251.html#msg805251) is now working with Panel in MC 24.0.40.  There is a new orange streaming icon.

On my iPad, Panel doesn’t seem to support “momentum scrolling “ which would make going thru long lists less of a pain.
Is that something that can be fixed?

I've been using Panel in MC 24.0.40 for the last couple days (streaming music from my main PC to my Windows 10 tablet), and these are my impressions, thoughts and suggestions.

I did, however, run into a couple of issues;

My suggestions;

Overall, I like where Panel is going, and will follow the continued development.

My biggest issue is how long it takes for video cover art to display. Even when i use localhost on the server it's on.
The TV recording section can take minutes.

I also wish it use a dynamic way of loading new pages of content. So it was more remote friendly.

The currently highlighted track does not advance for me. I have a very long playlist open in Chrome on macOS (I'd like to use Safari but it gives me a sluggish experience) and currently, the track that is playing is not visible anymore (fullscreen mode). Wasn't this (currently playing track highlighted and in focus/on top) implemented some time ago?

This was implemented, but it has one limitation at the moment. If the currently playing item goes off the page, it's no longer rendered, so Panel can't find it and scroll to it when the track changes. Clicking on the Playing Now button while on the Playing Now page will bring it back to the top.

I've been playing with Panel more recently and have some thoughts:

1) The thumbnails re-cache and takes minutes to produce a view for my server.
2) When I'm in portrait mode on my mobile device, the volume slider is hidden.
3) I can't use the built in volume keys on a phone to control remote media (I send it to a DLNA renderer for example).  They work for locally playing media of course.
4) The rating stars only turn orange for the star that you hover over.  The orange hovering should show the full rating.  Meaning, if I hover over star #3, 3 stars should be orange.  This is how it works in MC, so I think it should be the same.
5) There also seems to be no way to un-rate something.  If something is rated as 2 stars and I want to just rate it as nothing, I should be able to click the 2nd star to unset the rating.

...
I did, however, run into a couple of issues;

  • SSL doesn't work (using the local.jriver certificate) without browsers giving a privacy error notice. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that we probably need to install the certificate into the system store? If anyone has a step-by-step tutorial on how to get this working without encountering issues in the browsers, I'm all ears (would obtaining a Let's Encrypt certificate or something like that help?).
...

Yes - getting a trusted certificate makes that problem go away.  With a trusted cert installed in MC from Let's Encrypt, I get a lock icon and am not shown a "Are you sure you want to connect" dialog.  I'm not sure how you can generate a LE relationship with just MC running.

If you have a linux box on your network, then it's not hard and there are a lot of good tutorials online for setting this up (better than I would write).  The end output is that you get a script to run as a cron job that will renew your certificate every X days; they expire every 90, so generally you set it up to run weekly.  Then you need to manually move two files from the web server into MC.  I thought I read somewhere that they were looking to make that process easier with a script of some form.  That would be nice.  Until then, I just manually SFTP the two needed files to my MC box when I need to.

Is it possible to see the artwork for movies in Panel instead of a list?

EDIT: It is. Settings in MC Media Network->Advanced->Customize view..->"Show categories in this order".

However, the artwork is cut off (quadratic). Is this also configurable?

Why does Panel's GUI not follow the settings in "Customize View"? I do not have images or streaming set up, but I do see the categories in Panel. I even am able to listen to streams with the feature being deactivated in MC (which I expect not to show up if the feature is deactivated in MC).

What are your settings in MC ("customize view")? I just add an item in MC and it shows the title in Panel. You might want to play around with the options.

I've just discovered, that while I streamed through Panel (Radio JRiver?) -although Streaming is off in MC- some links have been added to my library. They reference some flac/ape files with http/https links. I am not sure this should be like this when the streaming feature is deactivated, no?

If you removed the Images category in Media Center, it shouldn't show up in Panel. However, you need to restart Media Center after making changes to customize view before it will take effect. Streaming, Radio KISS, and Engen are all hardcoded in Panel; however, Engen only shows up if there is an Engen server running.

Thank you and you are right. "Images" is not showing up. I was confused by the icons. It's Radio JRiver and streaming (which both are hard-coded into Panel as I understand). For consistency reasons, I would have expected that the user will be able to control this from MC (like one can controls views in MC and JRemote). Furthermore:
1. Engen in Panel will show up only when available/installed
2. Radio JRiver/Streaming in Panel will show up regardless of availability/settings
3. Images in Panel will not show up when not checked in MC

Usability-wise I do not consider this the best solution.

I've noticed with a smartlist in Panel that when I pull it up, it has alphabetized the tracks.  Is this a known issue?

Is there any chance of getting the following so that Panel is on par with JRemote/ MO 4 Media/ Gizmo in terms of Android usability?
1) Media buttons on the Android lock screen
2) Having the volume keys on an Android control a zone's volume
3) A persistent notification so one can easily jump back to Panel
4) Ability to view additional metadata
5) Ability to edit playlists

It works using a browser on the same PC that is hosting MC (using the link from the network settings in MC) but I cant seem to connect from a different pc or mobile with browser outside the network.

According to ipconfig my IP address is 10.0.0.xx rather than the 192.168.0.xx. Could it be a setting on my router that stopping the access?

Even when I use the https://jriver.com/panel.html method and insert my Access Key I get the same message "This site can't be reached".

In MC Media network options I ticked "Use media network to share this library and enable DLNA".

I also enabled SSL.

I have never used DLNA function in MC so this probably doesn't help.

Can anyone help please?

Hi - I've just started playing around with Panel. I have authentication enabled on my system and chrome prompts twice to log in (both on PC and on my Pixel 2). This occurs once with a pop-up dialog and then in the browser itself. This appears to be a Chrome issue (as it doesn't happen using Edge on the PC). Is anyone else using authentication experiencing this issue? Thanks.

Try from another device on the same network.  Does that work?

From outside your LAN, your router must be configured to forward ports 52100 to 52200.  See "Network Access (http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Network_Access)" on our wiki for more information.

Panel is good for any devices that can't run JRemote or Gizmo. It's meant to work from any device that supports a modern web browser, which more-or-less is any of them these days.

It works on Windows, it works on Mac, it works on Linux. It even works from a Raspberry Pi, or even an Android or iOS phone. More-or-less anything!

Keep in mind Panel is still in its early days, and is being actively developed.

how?

chrome, while can be installed on shield, is a really poor if not unusable experience.

is there even a browser for apple tv?

remember - these devices use remotes with nothing more complex than up, down, left, right, and select

I have been experimenting with Panel using a mobile phone in the car, and for simple playback it is more than adequate. When selecting streaming rates do you have to stop/start playback to take effect? Is there any way to make the setting persistent? I don't need anything over 128 in my noisy little commuter.

Thanks.

Really like the JRiver Panel idea instead of using dedicated apps.
However, JRemote and Gizmo have one particular advantage so far in my opinion:
I can browse a long list of albums by, using the capitals.
I know that loading an entire list of albums on one screen including the thumbnails would take long so you split it into several pages. However, the number of the pages are not that useful to jump to a certain artist/album.
Would it be possible to have an alphabetical index on top of the page instead of the page numbers?
Perhaps only optional, if other users prefer the way it currently is?

Kind regards,
Ruediger

Using Chrome to test, on a brand new Win10 laptop, very poor experience. Hangs, doesn't go Home but shows playlists instead.

Panel requires you to click Settings to change your Zone?

Ultimately, I'm not sure MC is well developed enough to serve the larger libraries we all have. Been noticing this for some time even using JRemote on a Gigabit LAN with modern equipment SSDs, and fast NAS, serving requests is just....slow.

how?

chrome, while can be installed on shield, is a really poor if not unusable experience.

is there even a browser for apple tv?

remember - these devices use remotes with nothing more complex than up, down, left, right, and select

Is the view with the alphabet selection on top mandatory or can the user choose to have one long list (like it was before) ?

Ok I finally have something at all to report about slow thumbnails.
Overall they still feel to slow to load when working. They seem to be first looking in each item to count the number of items in it. Then load the thumbnail. I guess waiting for jriver to generate the one image from all of them.
But! I have a DVR view that has 438 videos in it. If I go to that view it takes a really Long time. And after that all other thumbnails break in panel. Even on the views that were working.
I hope that help narrow down the chase of this issue.
Thanks

Found it!
The way the view was setup affected the thumbnail loading!

So i looked in the log and saw these calls.

1131313: 480: Sharing Plugins: JRWebService::Process: Start
1131313: 480: Sharing Plugins: JRWebService::Process: URL: /MCWS/v1/Browse/Files?Version=2&Token=nbVNRwx7&ID=1073&Action=Serialize
1132610: 3000: Database: CSearchFilesHelper::GetResults: Search: [=TVInfo(NameDisplayWithDate)]=[Olympics 2018: Figure Skating /(ice dancing/), /"Olympic Ice/" /(2018/)] (([Filename (path)]="\TV\Recording" or [Filename (path)]="playlater" or [Filename (path)]="\TV Recording") ~sort=[Date Recorded]-d); Elapsed ms: 1294.768
1132610: 3000: Sharing Plugins: JRWebService::Process: Finish (7281 ms)
1132610: 3000: Sharing Plugins: VHTTPMessage::Write: Wrote 148 bytes

But after i click to another view in panel. These calls were still going.
The other pages never get any of the thumbnails. Until it all of these previous calls finished.

It only seemed to happen with this specific view. I have setup for dvr recordings.

So i changed the search for this view.
From This:
([Filename (path)]="\TV\Recording" or [Filename (path)]="playlater" or [Filename (path)]="\TV Recording") ~sort=[Date Recorded]-d
To this:.
[Filename (path)]=[F:\TV Recording" ~sort=[Date Recorded]-d

It went from 7 minutes to under 2 minutes!!!
So I took them all out and now it's seconds for all the thumbnails.

So i made a top category with this. [Media Type]=[Video] [Media Sub Type]=[TV Show]
Then under that i have add the search back.

Why did these searches affect the thumbnail loading?

From This:
([Filename (path)]="\TV\Recording" or [Filename (path)]="playlater" or [Filename (path)]="\TV Recording") ~sort=[Date Recorded]-d
To this:.
[Filename (path)]=[F:\TV Recording" ~sort=[Date Recorded]-d

Well the first search is searching inside the path (one of the slowest fields) for several strings.  Just putting them all together (so there's only one [Filename (path)]) would really help.

The second search caps at the start of the string so is a lot faster.

I think you could take this:
([Filename (path)]="\TV\Recording" or [Filename (path)]="playlater" or [Filename (path)]="\TV Recording") ~sort=[Date Recorded]-d

And make it:
[Filename (path)]="\TV\Recording","playlater","\TV Recording" ~sort=[Date Recorded]-d

It should run quite a bit faster than doing independent or commands.

On iPad, latest iOS as of this post, either Safari or Chrome - trying to expand a video to full screen does not work.  The control is there but tapping it has no effect.

this works fine on both browsers on MacBook

My first impressions of Panel.

it does have potential, I can see it.   I don't like the whole web browser aspect but beggars can't be choosers as the saying goes.
That being said, here is my list of  gripes/criticisms/wishes/whatever you want to call them,

I'm not complaining because Panel is not everything "now now now" I'm just going through what I would like to see in it as an application that is useful to me.

Caching
I noticed this behavior in JRemote also.   There needs to be a way to cache album art so it doesn't have to re download it every. single. time

I don't like the way it buffers tracks, especially since I am forced to use MP3 320kbps (I can't stand 128k MP3)
It seems like it loads nearly half the track (rather slowly...) before it starts playing.   It does not buffer ahead the next track or keep the previous track buffered.

Playback Controls
They seem kinda wonky.  The  Next/Previous buttons on my receiver will seek the currently playing track if held down, however they will not skip to the next or previous track if pressed.

The Play/Pause button on my receiver momentarily pauses the music but then it immediately resumes playing.

Album Up/Down  does nothing when you would expect it to go to the next album in library order, etc..

I would like to see playback controls that make full utilization of basic car receiver controls.

Interface
I haven't played with it much. I understand it has a degree of customization available so I'm going to look into it.  However I will say it feels slightly clunky in the way it loads/queues songs.   I prefer the simple JRemote method where you navigate into an album and start playing from there.   I mean you can kind of do it, but then you have to navigate to the actual playlist part of Panel to gain access to  playback controls.

I would like to see Album listings reflect  Disc # like JRemote does.   So I go into an album with 15 or whatever discs, and I can see a clearly delineated list, which helps me find what I want easier if I am looking for a specific starting point. -  can this already be done via user modification?

So that's my primay feedback I guess.

A lot of my usage case is for out of the house stuff driving in a car,  and needless to say that right now the amount of time I have to pay attention to my phone to set things up or switch an album, etc.  is too much.   It doesn't make for safe driving.  Would love to see that improved.

Summary
I think the Panel should have a way to cache album art, video thumbnails, etc. I haven't modified anything about Safari,  maybe its the browser?  idk

I think Panel should provide caching options for music.   Give us the ability to say  "cache next/previous tracks up to X number of tracks".  Most people don't mind a brief pause upon starting playback -  it's the long pause between tracks that will drive people nuts, especially if they seek a lot.   Likewise I'd like to be able to set an initial buffer size in seconds, so it can start playing after  2 - 5 seconds or more have been cached.   This will help with large seeking between tracks  (i.e seek from track 5 to track 13) if those tracks are not within the  cached next/previous  data.

I would like to again, reiterate that we need AAC as an option.  Preferably  AAC-HE of some kind.   It will allow us to select much lower data rates for faster program response and reduce the need for a lot of caching in the first place.  (caching is still a great option if you live in an area like me which can go from LTE to 3G or no data in some spots).

At the very least I would like to see a 192Kbps  MP3 option added in the short term.   I think 192k is an acceptable middle-ground between  data usage /bandwidth required and sound quality.

Can't seem to connect to panel using the access key.   I tried both on my iphone (Wifi disabled) and on my local computer (connected to LAN/WAN)

Safari just hangs after I enter the access key, like its trying to connect.
On the PC on Firefox, I get an actual error page "unable to connect" and my WAN IP address/port  it tried.

I had no problem with access key resolving in JRemote.

I can access panel directly by  http://IP:Port   so this seems really weird and not sure where to look for the problem if its on my end.

Hi

When I'm playing through Panel, whenever I start a new track, it plays for a second or two, pauses and starts over playing the entire song with no problems. Feels like there's a buffering issue. It's a little annoying. There are no problems when I'm playing through MC. I'm using a win 10 tablet pc on local wireless network playing audio from a networked hard drive.

Panel does not continue to process a playlist when a phone has its screen shut off either by timer limit, or by manual button press.

It'll finish playing the current track (good),  but will not continue to even load the next track, until the screen is woken back up (bad)

Not sure if this is a "bug" or a "feature"

Hi

is it a bug or does the playlist dosent auto scroll/advance down to follow the track in panel?

it works well but then the current playing song has passed the initial view in the panel interface you only see the old tracks and not the current playing song

In recent builds of MC, Panel should show an alphabet slider at the top of at least Audio.  It may not be everywhere.

Make sure you have MC24.0.46 installed.

Thanks a lot for the information!

Really LOVE the new slider!

I still can't really use panel well yet. The thumbnail update is just really not working well enough. Am I the only one seeing this issue?

I've been using Panel on my phone during the commute each day and it's very handy but since I have an very large library the thumbnails load so slow that I rarely jump into the artist view and just jump into playlists.

Would it be possible for thumbnails to be turned off entirely in the list view?

I think I saw this question asked before, but cannot find which thread.
Is it possible to make Panel remember, ideally the exact place where the playback was stopped, but at least the last track played?
The issue I have is that I am listening to podcasts on my android phone while driving, and if the phone goes to sleep or gets restarted, I need to first scroll through a large library of podcasts to find the right one, and then fast forward through the ~ 1 hour long track to find where I left off...
  Thanks!

FYI, this shows up even if the sort on the view isn't alphabetical by title.  For example, I have a view set to sort by Import Date.  I want this so I see new things first.  At the top of panel is the alpha slider, which makes no sense.  It would be helpful if the slider was context aware and would change in this case to show me a date range.

I am not sure if this is the right place for this.  If not, sorry.  But I was having a problem starting a new thread.
A few weeks ago I was looking in the back end of Jirver. I may have pressed something by mistake because now, in the bottom right corner
or what I call the fancy view (where you watch movies) I have a little circle. No one else would know it there but it's really bothering me.
Has anybody ever heard of anything like that and how I can get rid of it?
Thanks

I need to ask as I've looked and searched without success.

Should I be able to see cover art in Panel for movies?

How about for season episodes for TV Series.?

I see cover art for Music (albums), For TV Series and for TV Seasons but that's it. No cover art for Movies or TV ep. under each season. Just lists of txt. Gizmo was much more appealing in these areas.

Is this how it's supposed to be? Am I missing a setting someplace that will turn on cover art for video content or are we txt lists only going forward?

Thanks,

By default, there really isn't a view that does this because videos aren't typically grouped into categories like 'album' so they usually just go right into list type views. You can modify a view to show cover art though. Go to Tools -> Options -> Media Network -> Advanced -> Customize views for JRemote, Gizmo & Panel... On the left side of the dialog that pops up, you can see the hierarchy JRemote, Gizmo, and Panel use. Toward the bottom, you should see a Movies category under Video. If you select Movies, on the right side you should see a box "Show Categories In This Order". Click on Add... next to it and select a field like 'Name'. Click OK once you're done to exit all the dialogs and restart Media Center. After restarting Media Center, the Movies view should then display cover art.

Went to Tools -> Options -> Media Network -> Advanced -> Customize views for JRemote, Gizmo & Panel and tried to change the layout for the audio section - moving Composer to the top of the list, then genre. Then added a files to display rule for composer to attempt to filter out all but the genre classical. Nothing changes in the panel view - under audio the old sequence is shown and every possible composer comes up under that section. Tried this on 24.0.56 and 24.0.58. No changes in JRemote either -what am I doing wrong???

Yes I did - a couple of times, the order in the customization panel is as I set it up but the display on panel firmly sticks to its original layout. To be fair the 24.0.56 machine is now kind of doing it right but a subsequent change and then restart is being ignored. The 24.0.58 machine adamantly refuses to change it's layout or follow the display files rule I set.

EDIT:- A complete computer restart fixed the problem but it does seem a little drastic!

I don’t think Apple TV has an internet browser.

so ive now tested panel on both Mac and linux, and with several browsers and it just cant keep track of current playing track

after the initial list in the now playing list when the songs pass the initial list the view just stays on the last song in the initial list.
this makes the list unusable.
funny enough a few other things do get refreshed :
1. the cover art always refreshes from track to track
2. if you are in the "home" view the song and album is present at the bottom and does refresh

would highly appreciate any suggestions as i use panel alot and its really annoying :D

happy to help debug this!

You cannot play Radio Paradise to the browser. If you go to the settings page in Panel and change "playing to" to any other zone, the button will show up. The option just doesn't show up when playing to "here" which refers to the browser.

I used Panel now for a month on a Samsung Galaxy Android. It works very well except for one thing. From time to time it takas very long time to upload the thumbnails. This evening about 5 minutes, yesterday about 10 seconds. I can't find the reason why except there could be something on my wifi network. On the other hand, everything else work fine connected to my wifi net. The old JRiver remote works fine.

The only thing I really miss from the Remote is some of the data I can access from the info like dynamic range.

Hi from a newbie, with a request for guidance.
I'm running 24.0.75 in 30-day trial mode, and am getting on well with it so far. The server is on a Win7 PC elsewhere on the wired network and works well with my player.
However in the last 3 days, when using Panel from my laptop the volume slider has no effect. It did work in the first week or so of my trial and is 1 reason for my liking the product overall. I have restarted and reloaded the server, have tried different options on the /Volume settings options, and have used 2 different browsers. I can see and use the track position slider.
Any suggestions/answers gratefully received.
Thanks

Thanks anyway for the reply!
I have also noticed that I can no longer set the options in /Volume - there used to be options for System, Internal, Application and something else I think, but the only things I see now are Mute, Volume increase(Ctrl++) and Volume Decrease. I think the best approach is to wipe the JRiver application from the server, re-install, and see what happens.

I think I am right in saying that the volume slider has no affect if the file is being sent to a DLNA rendering device - which should have it's own volume control. Can't get the strange volume options no matter how I try??
Title: Re: Panel in MC24

Sorry, but I don't know.  The volume slider in Panel should work.

Except if the playback Zone has been changed, since Volume Control is Zone specific.

For example, with my local Workstation connected to my HTPC MC Server in Client/Server mode, using a browser on my Workstation I just opened Panel from my HTPC MC Server and started playback in the Zone "Here". Volume control works. Then I switched Panel to Zone "Workstation", which is the Zone of my local MC installation on my Workstation. Volume control in Panel then no longer works, because it is controlling Zone "Workstation" now, and playback is occurring in Zone "Here".

I think I am right in saying that the volume slider has no effect if the file is being sent to a DLNA rendering device - which should have its own volume control. Can't get the strange volume options no matter how I try??

Not true, at least if the DLNA Renderer is a MC installation.

For example, with my local Workstation running the local Library, and not connected to my HTPC MC Server in a Client/Server setup, my HTPC becomes visible on my Workstation as a Dynamic (DLNA) Zone, and my Workstation becomes visible on my HTPC as a Dynamic (DLNA) Zone. So all connections between the two installations are using DLNA, and not specifically MC's Media Network. Note for this to work Media Network does need to be turned on in both the HTPC and the Workstation, and DLNA settings turned on as well. Server, Renderer, and Controller on the HTPC. Renderer and Controller on the Workstation.

Now when I open Panel for the HTPC, I can select the "Workstation" Zone and start playback, at which time I have full volume control, and can Mute playback if I wish.

Then if I change the Zone in Panel to "Here", I lose volume control, again because playback is happening in the Zone "Workstation", while I am trying to control Zone "Here".

Simple really.  :D

PS:
I don't have an independent (non-MC) DLNA Renderer that I can send audio to and test at the moment, but if I use a DLNA player on my phone (mconnectPlayer Lite), select some local (on the phone) tracks, and play them to MC on my Workstation via DLNA, I get full volume control and mute of the Workstation. In fact, if I change the volume on the phone, the volume slider in MC changes, and MC's Volume Protection works, so that I am prevented from just selecting 100% volume on the phone and blasting my neighbours with music. The slider moves on the phone, and on the Workstation, then drops back down to a lower volume according to Volume Protection rules. Neat.

Unfortunately, the phone DLNA Player doesn't appear in MC as a DLNA Renderer, even though it is a Renderer. If it did I could test playback the other way around and show that MC can volume control an independent DLNA Renderer volume.

I thought I would follow this up further as I am still investigating some DLNA issues on my network.

So I installed BubbleUPnP onto my Android phone, as it can act as a DLNA Renderer. Starting BubbleUPnP resulted in my phone becoming visible as a Dynamic (DLNA) Zone in MC on my Workstation, called "BubbleUPnP (G8141)". G8141 is the phone model number. I was then able to play music from MC to my phone. I had mute and volume control of the phone from within MC, with very quick response. The volume slider on the phone changed when I changed the slider in MC.

So then I stopped playback, started Panel for my Workstation, and select "BubbleUPnP (G8141)" as the playback Zone. When I played some tracks I had mute and volume control of the phone from Panel, as expected. In fact, I could change the volume or mute the audio from any of MC, Panel, or the phone, and in each case the volume slider changed in all three, although when done on the phone it took a couple of seconds to change in MC, and a couple more to change in Panel. But that was just a UI refresh issue. The volume changed immediately on the phone of course.

So I think that is pretty conclusive: Volume control using the Volume Slider when playing to a DLNA Renderer works fine, even when the DLNA Renderer is not a MC installation. Plus of course, the Volume Slider in Panel works fine when the correct Zone is selected. i.e. The actual Playback Zone.

Now if only I could get my TV to show up in MC as a DLNA Renderer again...

You're welcome Jim.

Now if only I could get my TV to show up in MC as a DLNA Renderer again...

In an ironic twist, my Sony KD-65X9300D TV (equivalent to the American XBR-65X930D I believe) just died. Won't power on. It seems it is a known issue, and with luck I shall get it repaired for free (https://www.sony.com.au/electronics/support/televisions-projectors-lcd-tvs-android-/kd-65x9300d/articles/00185187).

Maybe that will mean a complete new identity for the TV, and I might be able to get MC to see it as a DLNA Renderer again. Excellent!  :D

The new ui stack option are working nicely.
 thank you!

Just saying that if I do a send file to a dynamic zone whch isn't MC related that the volume slider doesn''t work (the renderer has the job of governing volume). But of course this is a DMR situation.

Two questions/comments:

1. I can't seem to get Panel to quit asking me for a user name and password for full authentication (in system settings). I have set authentication to "everyone" in MC.tools.options.media network.read-only authentication. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

2. In the JRiver Wiki Panel instructions there seems to be a typo in the recommended URL: http://192.168.1.13:52199 should be http://192.168.1.131:52199.

Do you see the login box as per the attached image?
Did you read what is written in the login box?

"System functions require full authentication."

You can't use Read-only Authentication (with Username & Password or just Everyone) and have access to System Functions in Panel. But if you are using Read-only Authentication and log in using the Full Authentication Username and Password you have defined in MC Options, then you can for that session access Panel System Functions.

From the Wiki:

"Open Panel from a web browser on any device by entering this URL:
http://[IP_Address]:52199 (changing [IP_Address] to your own IP address) Example: http://192.168.0.13:52199"

That is an example URL, not a recommended URL. There is a bit of a difference.
