Title: NEW: Playlist Upload to JRiver (includes media files)
Post by: JimH on December 20, 2018, 12:49:13 pm
In MC24.0.70 or above, you can right click on any audio playlist of lossless files and choose Upload to Cloud.  This uploads the playlist and the lossless files themselves.  It inserts the new upload under Playlists > Cloud, and you can play it from any copy of Media Center.  So, for example, at work, you could play a playlist you uploaded from home.

The files are stored on our Amazon S3 server.  They will also be available for Radio JRiver (https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,116509.0.html) programmers.

To upload, you need to have a Doctor Who account and be logged into it.  Click the settings icon and check "Only show users and playlists that have uploaded content".

The playlist is also available from Playlists > Doctor Who.

Just a note to mention that the lossless files need to be standard cd quality - hi res files are rejected by the upload software.

I converted some 128 mp3 to lossless and put in a playlist but I do not see ability to copy to cloud when I right click on that playlist.  What am I doing wrong?  I do have Doctor Who opened and signed in.

I would highly recommend not transcoding a lossy format like MP3s to a lossless format like FLAC or APE. Not only do 128kbps MP3s sound bad (in my opinion), transcoding lossy to lossless in general is frowned upon.

Transcoding lossy to lossless isn't not listed in JRiver's rules for Radio JRiver, but in my opinion it should be.

Got it, so all of my 100K+ music is in 128 Mp3 format.
Does that mean that I can not use JRiver's cloud for some playlists?

That's correct at this time.

Jim, is there plans to add mp3?

Must have embedded cover art.
I've chosen to not embed cover art.
I usually end up with 3000x3000 cover art at a size of about 5MB.
Multiply that by 12 songs = an extra 60MB of disk space.  60MB more backed up to cloud storage.  60MB more copied to portable devices.  12 files needing backed up to the cloud again if I apply better coverart down the line, etc.

Not having embedded art keeps me from using this feature and the upload to play doctor feature.
Any possibility of grabbing folder.jpg when embedded art is empty in some future build?

You are not going to achieve better quality transcoding from lossy to lossless. You need to re rip your cd's to gain the better quality.

What maddog says is very true - I should point out that the cloud upload mechanism is designed to detect flac files converted from a lossy format and prevent them from being uploaded. They only want CD quality lossless files, with embedded cover art images and they must be audio analysed.

I've moved this to the MC25 board since we're planning more changes.

We could use some more files for testing, if someone can upload a few playlists.  Just post your Doctor Who account name here.

Currently, the old Doctor Who playlists are also showing, but we expect to remove them.  Those playlists have no corresponding audio tracks, so they only play if you already have the tracks locally.

The new playlists you upload will include the audio tracks.  We pay the license fees so that anyone can stream these playlists.  They serve as the basis for Radio JRiver, so the more tracks we have, the better that experience will be.

I went to upload a playlist and remembered the two main reasons why I stopped using the functionality.

I created a lower res flac library  with embedded art on a usb drive to do the uploads from. This has the advantage of not filling up your main library with tons of duplicate files with the http:// filepath. I like a clean solution! I don't have to embed cover art into my main library files. Plus there is no way I would consider converting expensive high res files to low res in my main library.

I went to upload a playlist and remembered the two main reasons why I stopped using the functionality.

The message that shows me what won't upload isn't savable.  Meaning, it popped up and said 14 tracks wouldn't be uploaded.  You click OK, then you have no idea what to go fix.  This message shouldn't be modal.
You may have tried uploading something that wasn't a lossless file.  You could correct that in the playlist that you're trying to upload.
Quote
Forcing to have embedded artwork is a big restriction.  I don't always do that, but I might have artwork in a folder.  I don't want to modify my FLACs to do this.  MC should get the cover art on upload and embed it in the cloud copy if you want the cover art embedded.
That has come up before and we'll probably make a change for it.  Do you have cover art stored as folder.jpg?

Sorry for the delay Jim.  All are FLACs.  But I have had some 24 bit ones rejected, which was annoying, but then I just removed them.

As far as cover art, some are folder.jpg, a few are Cover.jpg, some are [Artist] - [Album].jpg, some are [Album].jpg.  But the large majority of it is in the cover art folder as specified in MC.

Realistically, if my local MC sees cover art, then the upload should just pick it up and send it.  I mean that even for stuff using the rules of Series and Season.

That's a good idea.  Takes extra effort, but a good way around what I mentioned.  I might try to do that, it's not a long term answer, but it at least will meet the upload requirements and not change my library to suit.

It is also a good idea to set up an empty library called streaming which is used whenever you want to stream files - if you stream in your main library you get all sorts of file duplication necessitating  a don't show files with a filepath starting with http:// in all of your views.

If that's still happening, it's a bug.  It was fixed a few weeks ago.

Is this to be expected and a different email is required?

As I previously posted in the cloudplay thread - I can't even access playlists  I previously uploaded before I upgraded to MC - I don't understand it at all and am getting no error messages - Is there anywhere a log is kept of inputs/outputs so I can get at least an idea of what is going on as all the other internet dependent services appear to working fine

I think JimH posted that there was an issue with chromium in another thread and there was a fairly easy fix as it was to do with a cookie if I remember. Anyway happily working for me  :)

If you have a problem with MC when it's using the Chromium browser engine, try logging in outside MC in the Chrome browser.  That should set the cookie so MC then works.

chromium browser all the time so I need to set the cookie :(

Thanks :)

Unfortunately that hasn't fixed the other problem I'm having - last night I could upload a play list with media to cloud and the play list would appear under my username Axil. I have tried to upload a new playlist today and I can clearly see the progress but the playlist doesn't appear in cloud play, However it does appear under the left side menu   cloud and clearly have the address of the offsite server as the source (see below -have just copy and pasted the first track in the list to show)

When I click on the list to play it's definitely streaming (when I disconnect from internet the music stops so it's not playing a local copy )  - I'm just not sure why it doesn't show up on the cloudplay screen

We're making some changes to encourage better playlists.

I believe the current requirement is 10 tracks or more.  Less than that will only be displayed to the user who uploaded them.

We also removed a lot of one track playlists.

We'll try to document this better next week.

thanks that may explain why I'm having issues tonight - the play list I showed below btw is actually 20 songs long but it's not appearing at all in cloudplay - hopefully it's just a glitch and will sort itself out

It's called Upload3 - has 21 tracks with a total playtime of 2:01:04 . Also If I try to upload the original playlist (with local media) back up to the cloud it reports. I've Tried Making  another playlist with the same local tracks  (called Dance) and tried uploading that also but atm the upload progress bar just flicks through each track *about 1 track per 2 seconds) and then reports the playlist failed to upload in a pop up box but complete on status action bar (weirdly when i click on the playlist under cloud the tracks appear to be the same ones that were uploading previously under the Upload3 name (see attached) . It also saves a copy of the Dance.mpl file to my desktop

If you click on that link, it should download.  If you then drag it to MC, it should play.  I'm playing it.  21 tracks, beginning with "Temple Head" and ending with "Sun Rising".

You can also copy the link and do MC File > Open URL.  That works.

Try switching your web browser in MC.

Can Confirm I'm using 25.017 64 bit version in normal install onto my D: drive (so not in C;\program files so there should not be issues with UAC)

I just tried reuploading th Dance playlist but just got the same thing as i described earlier  have made a brand new play list aaaaaaa  which has 15 new files in it - it's uploading atm (taking it's time as the files are  are being sent rather than skipped)

aaaaaa playlist upload just completed - had exactly the same think - pop up box  says the file failed to upload - status box says upload progress complete (pic attached) anf the streaming playlist appears under cloud left hand menu but not in cloud play

Ok, so uploaded a new classical set - everything went well until the final - failed to upload playlist warning. the .mpl file appears on the desktop but when played the first track is always skipped to the second track - I have never seen this behaviour in previous uploads so something is clearly wrong. The playlist doesn't appear in the cloudplay listing.

Yep I can definitely download & play the stream (and since you can it;s there :) ) though if I link the  download link 'Dance' (rather than the url) i get the attached browser error.  I just can't figure why it doesn't show under Axil in Cloudplay

It is playing fine now after the reupload - using the cloud playlist section in standard view. It's is rather odd that the original .mpl file from the desktop dump wouldn't play track 1 but after a reupload the desktop dump .mpl worked as expected albeit it doesn't show up as a playlist in cloudplay.

I have an upload library and a streaming library the outcoime is the same for both - track 1 doesn't play unless I am a bit devious and do a download from the  email link. The fact that an uploaded playlist fails to show is clear proof that cloudplay is broken,

Just as an alert -when you play the mpl file - check the main library  and the album you took the track you uploaded from - It appears the track appears gets inserted as an additional track into the main album with the location as the jriver server (luckily I tend to use recently added albums as my main library view so it shows up as it pops the album to the most recently added)

 - I am however still getting the effect I described in previous post with the uploaded file popping up in the entry in the album it originally came from (see attached  - track 4 ) - no major problem as I can go back and just delete out the entry (doesn't affect the uploaded stream)

Hi JimH - the playlist uploaded was called Chill Out - it's a mixed playlist of 20 tracks - my attached screen clip in my last post was to show what happens to my local library listing in J River.

All the tracks in my local music collection are located on my network Z: drive but if you look at track 4 on my screenshot I now have an extra track 4 which is located on the jriver server (this is the track I uploaded as part on my mixed playlist (this happens for every track in the play list.

Easy enough to remove the entry from my library listing post upload but I don't think it should be happening

Capture8.png is the stream list as playing on cloudplay ( all located on the S3Amazon server)

I did have a glitch when I initially tried to upload the Chill Out play list to cloud but the second attempt worked perfectly . Perhaps that's a possible cause

I've also attached the mpl that was saved to desktop. In that it has JRiver as the location - I wonder if it's the first upload failure that's generated both the .mpl file and the glitch in the local library

Update:   can't attach the mpl so will paste the text from the mpl for the first track - as you can see (bold text) the location is given in the mpl as the jriver server

Please upload mixed playlists.  We can legally play full albums under our current license.
Do you mean can't play full albums. I have deleted any of my playlists that fall into that category.

After the recent uploading problem my downloaded playlists went a bit ape - playing stuff quite at odds with what was supposed to be there. Restoring from a recent library backup and downloading the recent playlists seems to have restored normality. (Still can't believe that some tracks were playing bugs bunny cartoons!)

Split two questions to a new thread on Cloudplay (https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,120167.0.html).
