MacOS 10.12.6 : spinning pizza- to do anything at all-- usually have to force quit and restart- sometimes, after a few minutes, will do the action I tried to do (eg: search for a song, or album, or go to playlists, or try to create a new playlist--) but very next action, spinning pizza shows again.

What version of MC are you using?
Where are your files located?
-
MC 24.0.75
files located in external drive LaCie Rugged 2TB
should advise I have the same set up on my 2015 MBAir-'cept I'm using Mojave-and it works perfectly fine
-
Should also say-- been using the same set up since PONO died- always with most up-to-date software- always successfully except at about this point last year when I had similar issues with MC23 but--- an update solved them.
-
Try a test library with only internal files.
How is the drive powered? Try disconnecting it.
-
have disconnected and reconnected external drive several times: problem persists
tried to create test library: result is a spinning pizza
-
should explain:
went into library manager: spinning pizza:
after a while it allowed me to click "add library": chose local library: wouldn't let me create a library from an already existing folder with music files in it so created an empty folder on desktop and selected it in library location: path : browse spinning pizza- then allowed me to select the empty folder- then I clicked on "OK"
then I got the spinning pizza for about the last 5 minutes

A few notes for you:
1. Spinning Pizza: I've never heard it called that before! :) This is normally called the "Beach Ball"; of course I knew what you meant. Beach balling normally means that the system itself is busy in some way, which normally indicates a problem of some kind: Stuck program, stuck operating system, I/O problems (spinning up a drive), etc. It's definitely not normal to get a beach ball with MC very often at all.
2. When you create a new library, it's kind of confusing. What MC means when it says "create new library" is: "Find me a place to put the DATABASE FILES for this new library". The database files should be all by themselves with no media an no other files at all! But it's a very common thing for people to try to tell MC to put those with their media because that's how people think. If you have mixed database and media files together, that's a big no no and might be causing your whole problem. Try to create a library on your internal drive in a brand new EMPTY folder. Once that succeeds you can then use Tools > Import to add some media to that library. Note that "add some media to the library" does NOT mean copying the files. It just means telling MC to read the media files and learn their metadata (artist, album, song, etc). MC will add that stuff to the database, but the database files will stay all by themselves in that directory you created.
3. It's a little odd that you had this same problem with MC23 but that "an update fixed it". I assume you mean an Apple OSX update? That makes me suspicious. I would be inclined to back up all my stuff and rebuild the Mac from scratch from the recovery system. You will, of course, have to make your own decision on this drastic action that I'm leaning towards. I'd be comfortable with it, but a lot of people would not be.
Good luck.
Brian.

I'll give your suggestions
(2.) a try, Brian: Thanks for all your help: I'll keep you posted.
Just FYI--
1.the "Spinning Pizza" or "Beach Ball" problem only occurs with MC-- everything else on the computer works flawlessly.
3. the update I referred to was an MC update as I recall. That's why I waited so long to seek help after the release of MC 24.0.75-- I kept thinking there'd be another update soon and my problem would disappear.
-
There's a newer build available, 24.0.78: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,119887.0.html

Thanks folks: I upgraded to MC 25 yesterday-- everything is fine
Thanks for all of your help- really appreciate your efforts.
Cheers
