Title: Crashing after 10 seconds
Post by: MrMoto on December 24, 2019, 10:02:58 am
Hi folks,
Looking for some help. I'm a long time user with MC 25 running on a Mac Mini (OSX 10.12). Everything has been running fine until I plugged in a new Sony camera and installed related software.
Now when I open MC it closes suddenly and without warning after about 10 seconds, no matter what I do, even if I don't do anything. I then get a message saying that MC has crashed and asking if I want to report to Apple.
I "erased" MC from the applications, downloaded what I believe is the latest build and installed it. You've probably guessed it: Problem still there.
I need help. Is there a way to revert to a previous time on OSX, like you can in Windows? Any suggestion, solution or workaround would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Posting the crash log here would likely help the developers.

Version is 25.0.123. I'll try to get a log. If I can manage to set it up before it crashes...

How about if I'd upgrade to Catalina?

That may or may not work, keep in mind though that there's been various issues with Catalina in general with bugs and Xcode issues, for example.

My Mac seems to be having issues on it's own. I had a hard time rebooting. Needed to unplug everything from it except the power cord in order to get it to restart... The problem might not be with MC25 after all... I'll try to fix whatever is wrong with my Mac first.

You might try a memory test. It sounds like that to me.

Food for taught, MC24 runs fine... and my MAC is back to booting normally. It rebooted fine after playing MC24 and after MC25 crashing. MC25 still crashes though. It seems that MC25 is problematic. Maybe I need to make a "clean install" of MC25? Is there a better way to make a clean install than just throwing the app in the garbage and reinstalling? I've saved my library backups on an external drive. Is this sufficient to recover my playlists also?
Thanks for your help.

Are you using the latest version of MC25 for Mac, 25.0.127?

Yes. I was on an older version but have upgraded to that one in the debugging process.

An easy way to get the equivalent of a clean install is to trash the
~/Library/Application Support/J River/Media Center 25/
folder.
You'll need to re-install you license then too.

Follow up: I erased picture files that were imported from my Sony camera and that had ended up in the standard "Pictures" directory and everything seems to be working ok since. Maybe MC25 was trying to read or do something with these files, I don't know.

Ahh, sounds like possibly bad files, which can cause MC to crash. If it continues, you might want to try enabling logging and reproduce a crash, then look at the previous log file to see what was the last file(s) MC was trying to import before it crashed.

Perhaps a new format of a raw file? It would be nice to know what it was...
