Title: UPGRADE: Prices and Help for MC27
Post by: JimH on July 06, 2020, 03:17:26 pm
Edit by JimH -- Please see the new thread on MC28 upgrades:
https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,129290.0.html

You can purchase a JRiver Media Center 27 upgrade license at a discount.  All licenses sold are for MC27 and will also work with MC26.0.98  or higher.

JRiver Media Center 27 is now available on the Download Page (https://jriver.com/download.html).  MC27 will continue to improve throughout the year.  Minor upgrades are free.

Upgrade Prices

You can use a license from any previous version of JRiver Media Center, even Media Jukebox 8.0, to upgrade.

The discounted price to upgrade for Windows, Mac or Linux is $26.98.  A Master License upgrade for all three OS's is $39.98.

INSTRUCTIONS
To direct you, we need to check a few things.

1.  Have you ever purchased MC?
If not, there is no upgrade price.  Sorry.  Here's how to download and purchase (https://jriver.com/purchase.html) a license.

2.  Do you have your Registration Code for your older version?
If not, you can email it to yourself Here (https://rover.jriver.com/cgi-bin/restore_email.cgi?displayemail=1).

Now you're ready to purchase, but we need to know what OS you have and what license you want.

3.  Are you planning to use more than one OS?
If so, you will need a Master License, which works with Windows, Mac, and Linux.  You can purchase from the Help menu of a current version or you can go here:

Master License Upgrade (https://jriver.com/purchase_28_master_as_upgrade.html) (direct link)    $39.98

5.  Or do you only need Windows or only Mac or only Linux?
Then you can get the new license here:

Windows Upgrade (https://jriver.com/purchase_28_as_upgrade.html) (direct link)    $26.98
Requires 27.0.79 or higher from the top of this board.

Mac Upgrade (https://www.jriver.com/purchase_28_mac_as_upgrade.html) (direct link)    $26.98

Linux Upgrade (https://www.jriver.com/purchase_28_linux_as_upgrade.html) (direct link)    $26.98

Problems
Requires 27.0.79 from the top of this board.
Is your license not accepted when you upgrade?
Make sure you're on the right upgrade page.
Use copy and paste.  0 (zero) and O (letter) look alike.  So do 1 (number one) and l or I (letters).

Don't have your license?  Visit the Restore Page (https://rover.jriver.com/cgi-bin/restore.cgi)  and use option #2 to email yourself your license(s).

More
Restore your license (https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Restoring_a_License)

Restoring a backup (https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Library_Backup) of your library.  MC makes them automatically.  You can use your OS to search for zip files to find them.  MC can restore a backup from MC20 and above.

You can use translate.google.com to translate this page.

Hopefully a quick question...

Having done a portable install of MC 26 onto a removable USB drive, Windows 10 now appears to want to open the .mjr file with a program that resides out on drive H:, which corresponds to that portable installation.

Do I need to get my desktop installation (in the usual spot, C:) using the new .mjr file?

I should clarify that double-clicking on the .mjr file doesn't seem to be working, as it brings up a dialog box.  That's where I saw the H: drive reference.

Would it be appropriate to navigate to the "C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 26" directory and pick some .exe there to open the file?

Fix your file associations in Windows 10, so that the mjr file is opened by the MC installation on the C:\ drive. If you need more information search for posts by me about "File Associations".

Once MC26 has the new licence installed correctly, run the MC26 installation program again and select a Custom > Portable installation, and install on your portable device again. That will add the new licence to your portable device. It won't change anything in the Portable installation, other than the licence.

Default file association for .mjr as per the attached screenshot.

Double-clicking the new .mjr file results in MC opening, and it still reports as registered (phew), but there's no real indication of whether the license changed.  I guess I'll find out once MC 27 is available...

EDIT: I drew the arrow in the wrong spot in the screenshot!  Look one row down.

If you are running MC26, and you should be running MC26.0.98 to apply the MC27 licence, then the File Association should be as per the first attached image.

You also need to check that the association is with the correct Package Installer. You can do that by double-clicking on the mjr file, and in the Windows UAC dialogue that displays, click "Show more details" and then check that the Package Installer referenced is in the MC26 directory.

Double-clicking the new .mjr file results in MC opening, and it still reports as registered (phew), but there's no real indication of whether the license changed.  I guess I'll find out once MC 27 is available...

Successful installation of the licence does not result in MC being opened. It results in an onscreen message as per the second attached image, and a web page being opened in your default browser as per the third attached image.

Because of your current File Association for the mjr file pointing to the MC26 executable, MC tried to open the file as if it was a media file. You have not installed your MC27 licence.

There is no indication inside MC that the new licence has been applied. The "Help > Registration Info" menu option will just show which version is installed, and who MC is registered to, not the licence version. It will work with MC27 if the above happened.

Thanks for clarifying.  License installed.

Having bought a licence it would be nice to know when MC27 is actually going to be available, all of the mc27 links on this page take you to mc26 info.
EDIT - OK I've seen the mc27 topic now, it will be a long few months to wait, but having done 3 months of lockdown I think I can deal with it. ;D

I'm currently using MC25 and want to upgrade to MC27.  Do I download the latest MC26 build as a trial, update my libraries from MC25, then purchase the MC27 upgrade?

If possible, I'd like to move everything from MC25 to MC26, then qualify for MC27 when it's ready.  Please confirm the sequence, or tell me the best way to accomplish this.  Thanks.

Will there be a version of MC27 native for Apple Silicon when the first hardware is released later this year and if so, would the price for a Mac license cover native versions for both Intel and Apple Silicon?  Thanks!

I don't know what JRiver's plans are (or if they're even considering on support ARM on macOS) but if they are eventually going to do an ARM build of MC for Mac, I wouldn't expect it for a good while, perhaps not even during the MC27 release cycle... maybe not MC28 either. Depending on the amount of work needed (which is likely a ton) I honestly wouldn't be surprised if JRiver decided not to develop an ARM version of MC for Mac because of the large development costs likely needed for seemingly little gains. Once Intel Mac support is completely dropped by Apple in about 7 years, it might mean the end of the road for them supporting the Mac platform, but know knows I could be wrong on my guess. There's also other potential factors like the various issues they've had with Xcode for the last year and Apple's tightening grip of the entire ecosystem with them now moving into controlling all of the hardware side of things.

Going from x86_64 (Intel) to ARM (Apple's Silicon) isn't an easy or quick process. I'm not sure if any of the ARM code for the MC for Linux version could be leveraged or not, but I'm going to guess no. One of the biggest hurdles is likely they'd need to re-write the OpenGL code MC for Mac uses for Metal 2, which is likely a large undertaking. With Apple also intending to drop AMD GPUs and replace them with Apple GPUs, re-writing a large portion of the application is likely unavoidable.

I know for me, once Intel Macs (and Hackintoshes) go away and all supported Macs are ARM-based, that it's the end of the road for me with using Macs and macOS.

Today I purchased a Mediacenter 27 Master Licence and updated the licence on MC26 on my Windows 10 machine.

I also have a Mediacenter 26 install on a Ubuntu 20.04 box installed using the repository /stable.../jessie main.  At this time it shows v 26.0.73 is installed. After pasting in the key I get a "your licence is for a different product" message.  Also tried the install by way of command line, and got the same error message.

The date stamp between my Windows machine and Linux are different by 5 hours (windows thinks its 5 hours ahead).  I changed the time on my Linux machine to that of Windows and tried the install, and again got that same error message.

The Linux install of MC26 still says I have some days left in my trial period, so I know the licence install has not taken hold.

What do I need to do to get my Master Licence working on a Linux MC26?  I suspect that I have to go to 26.0.98 but where is that? In the most current repository? How do I change to a different repository and update from that?  Thanks.

Derek

You need to install a newer version of MC26 for it to use a MC27 license. Easiest way to do it is to look at the Ubuntu tutorial and switch to the latest channel from the stable channel and check for updates (and install the updated MC26 build).

https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,123664.0.html

EDIT: Just make sure Media Center is fully closed, then use this command in a Terminal...

Code: [Select]
sudo wget http://dist.jriver.com/latest/mediacenter/mediacenter26.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mediacenter26.list && sudo apt-get update
From there check for updates in Ubuntu like you normally do, there should be a Media Center 26 update.

Thanks, Awesome Donkey.  The switch to the "latest" repository went seamlessly following those instructions.  Linux latest and even in the beta is still at 26.0.94, not at 26.0.98 which I understand will accept a MC 27 licence.

The 94 build for Linux should accept the new license just fine, as far as I know,

You can now order a JRiver Media Center 27 upgrade license at a discount

Early builds of JRiver Media Center 27 are now available on the Download Page (https://jriver.com/download.html).  These will improve on MC25, and MC26 will continue to improve throughout the year.

Bought the upgrade, ofcourse. just wondering if i need to buy new specs too.  8) i cant find the early build on the download page .

Actually I think that wording is a mistake, as MC27 hasn't been released yet and it'll probably be several months until it is.

In the meantime, MC27 licenses will work fine with the latest MC26 builds, e.g. MC 26.0.98. :)

Since the wait for MC27 is longer than usual, can we expect new builds of MC26 during that time, or are all the devs now assigned to MC27?

Longtime MC user (since 2008). I recently bought a full Linux license in the hopes of migrating my setup from Windows. I failed, simply couldn't get it to work, and just installed a VM again to use my MC26 Windows license. Can I cancel the Linux license and transfer the payment to renewing for MC27 for Windows? You can keep the difference.

I just purchased a Master Licence. I don’t know what went wrong but I was sent two registration emails with different registration numbers. I checked my VISA activity and I Confirmed that I have been charged twice.  Please correct this double billing.
Should I post this as a separate topic to have corrected?

any possibility JRiver could be modified to control the Technics  ST-G30 ripper/server?  I really like this unit but the Technics Music App is very limited in functionality compared to JRiver.  So far I have been unable to access my files through my LAN on the ST-G30 for playback on my Windows 10 based PC.

Send me your details and I'll check our logs.  I'm jimh at jriver.

I've seen a couple other similar problems and there were no transactions (failed or otherwise) in our logs.   That means it's not getting to our server.  And that suggests a possible antivirus problem or similar on your machine.

You can use one license on all your machines (within reason).

Use the Install Key for the second machine.  Details:

I am licensed user of JRiver vers. 26.098. I purchased upgrade license code for vers 27 yesterday. Have code in my email. I understand 27 not available for a few months.
Do I wait to enter new code until then or write over existing license?
Thanks

You don't know how difficult it will be to get JRiver Media Center 27 onto the new Apple Silica based Macs on the new MacOS? It may be worth considering signing up for "Universal App Quick Start Program" which will enable you to get a developer version of the new mac out to you. You can then utilise it to get started with the work also consider the Rosetta 2 technology on new Apple Silicon based macs.

Just something for you to consider in regards to getting ready for the new Apple Macintosh computers.

It just asks for your email address and also asks you to choose a password.  Why is that a problem?  You might have changed your email address or want to use a different one.

Hi,
I'm on Win10, MC23, just bought an upgrade with Paypal as per instructions in OP.
When I try to install I get msg "your license file is for a different product".

Through the FAQ I found this page https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Paypal
There I get msg "Unable to find transaction ID or e-mail address."

Download and install MC26.0.98 or higher.  Then restore your license.  It's not a Paypal problem.

Jim,

I started at about MC17 and the email address I used then and for upgrades until the end of 2018 was @talk21. I then switched to @gmail and upgraded to MC24/5.

However I notice that all of your upgrade offers are still sent to @talk21 not @gmail. My thinking is that you might make more sales if you wrote to people’s current email addresses rather than ones they might have discarded years ago.

I bought the Mac version a while back and decided to purchase the universal license with these latest discount offers.  Purchased the upgrade on July 29th.  Checking my credit card account last week I noticed that I was charged again on Aug 1st.  I called and spoke to the lady in accounting And she told me she would fix it but it may take a few days.  She indicated that there was some sort of issue with Safari on the Mac.  Satisfied that it would be taken care of as I hung up.   Today I looked at my account again and not only did she not fix the issue but I was charged again for the 3rd time on Aug 7.  This is getting old. You may be having an issue with Safari but no other company seems to have this problem with the many purchases I've made while in Safari lately.  Please fix!

You'd have to look at the release notes for MC24, MC25 and MC26 to see what features was added in those versions. A list of new features in MC27 hasn't been announced yet.

Actually I think that wording is a mistake, as MC27 hasn't been released yet and it'll probably be several months until it is.

In the meantime, MC27 licenses will work fine with the latest MC26 builds, e.g. MC 26.0.98. :)

Hello, I am using MC25.    If I purchase the MC27 upgrade, should I continue to use MC25 until the MC27 is available, or if I download MC26, assuming there is a trial version, will the MC27 upgrade license work with the trial version MC26 whiling waiting for MC27?

If I continue to use MC25 and wait, will I be able to upgrade from MC25 to MC27 and use the upgrade license?

Sorry if the same question have been answered before, in that case I'll do a better search.

Thank you.

So, just for clarification, I am a FNG; just purchased JRiver today, but the upgrade notification came out while I was in the trial period, and of course, I could not upgrade.

The license I got is sitting on my desktop, and its title is
Media Center27 Master-509577 (1)

But when I open the Properties it says MediaCenter.26.Registration(.mjr)

Question becomes, then:
Will I get MC-27 when it is available?
Or, do I (after having just purchased Media Center) have to pay for an upgrade later?

Thanks for your consideration.

Yes, I have to spend more later to get 27.
No, I spent what I need to as the license name suggests.

I just posed a question...nothing more.

Just a little further clarification.

The file properties say "MediaCenter.26.Registration" because mjr files are currently associated with MC26 in Windows. When you upgrade to MC27 the Windows File Association will (should) be changed so that any mjr file shows a property of "MediaCenter.27.Registration".

I am finding it a bit hard to swallow the upgrade modus operandi. Every few months so far since I purchased Ver 24 to v25 to v26 I have coughed up $28.to upgrade a master license, only to find cosmetic changes and some bug fixes that could have been pushed in smaller updates.

V27 has one major feature, VST3 support, which is by industry standards late. Also, VST3 files are not necessarily dll's but. Vst3 files. So talking about dll's and vst3 does not make sense.

I have since been exploring options like Roon, HQPlayer, Audirvana, and Roon and Audirvana appear to be doing a slightly better job of the end that matters-- audio quality. I am aware of all the talk of bitrate, depth, sampling, etc etc etc. I have exhausted all those considerations to judge that JRiver could use some tweaking here. Roon has also improved on the the second most important thing, library organization.  Without these two anything else is frills. Album/audio curation has been quite quirky with JRiver especially with limited databases to lookup that provide accurate and comprehensive information that does not hours of manual verification. Of course, Roon is disgustingly priced, something I have even harder time swallowing.

But I have been diehard JRiver fan since way back when you were the only professional option when there was no other.  And your options for streaming etc that no one yet offers. However, it seems that you should go back to the core functionalities of audio and curation and provide upgraded audio sampling and filter options. Along with a improved album scanning. Otherwise I can still run v24 without any appreciable difference worth upgrading every few months.  I get the same audio quality and library functions from even earlier versions.

You don't have to upgrade.  You can use one version forever.

It's hard to improve on perfect.

If other players sound different (even better), they are manipulating the sound.  There are lots of ways to do that in MC if that's what you want.  Turning up the volume, for example.

I may move this to a new thread.

Your album scraping offering is below par, and those days of just repopulating from tags are gone. Using JRiver sources many albums go un-updated, even if I use your search features.  Because I understand the power of JRiver I come back to it.

What about vst3 files that are not dll's? They are. Vst3 extensions. None of my VST3 are dlls but have a vst3 extension and I know from other vst hosts that are not detected.

Is this an upgrade from v.26 or is it a new install? If the latter like last time then I will pass as it is not worth the hassle of having to change all my settings, views, skins etc. back to how I want them. Not to mention new access codes for Gizmo etc. I know there is supposed to be a way of importing settings but this is far too fiddly so unless v.27 comes up with a must have feature then I will save my money (though I do really want to fund you guys and your excellent product)

On Windows, MC27 will find your library from MC26 or earlier and use it, including your settings.

On Mac or Linux, you need to restore a backup from MC26 or earlier.  It's not automatic.

Hello. I search around but could not find any information regarding my problem. I purchased a new license and download the last stable version of MC 27 (MediaCenter270026-x64). After executing it, the program extracts whatever it has to extract. I got the windows message that the program will change things in the computer. I press ok and nothing happens. No error messages, no freezes, nothing. Everything else continues to work but the installation process just vanishes in the thin air, like a bad dream. I don't even know where to begin to try to fix it, since there is not a single message from the system. What can I do?

Title: Re: UPGRADE: Prices and Help for MC27
Post by: alexandrebrasil on November 19, 2020, 03:57:39 pm
Well, I followed the steps in the link you provided. There is no "virus & threat protection settings" in the settings windows and both Windows firewall and defender are off. I am using Norton 360 and it appears as such there.
Title: Re: UPGRADE: Prices and Help for MC27
Post by: RoderickGI on November 19, 2020, 04:37:41 pm
I'm also using Norton 360, and it generally handles security issues better than Defender. So maybe there is some other issue.

Scan the installation file in Norton, then check File Insight, and if it hasn't been given a status of Trusted, trust it manually and try again.

If it still doesn't work:
Reboot the PC and try again.
You don't use any other security software? Malwarebytes or something?

PS: Windows Defender does still run even when using Norton 360. It runs at boot time before Norton starts, and if you haven't turned it off the "App & Browser control" function still runs. That is similar functionality to Norton's File Insight, and can run in parallel.
Title: Re: UPGRADE: Prices and Help for MC27
Post by: alexandrebrasil on November 19, 2020, 05:40:03 pm
I am only using Norton. I had already used File Insight, it is ok. Saint reboot did not work a miracle. I turned it off app & control to no avail.
My kingdom for an error message.
Title: Re: UPGRADE: Prices and Help for MC27
Post by: RoderickGI on November 19, 2020, 06:57:21 pm
This has been reported previously, although I can't find the threads. I'm pretty sure security software was the most common issue though.

Did you try disabling Norton Auto-protect for the installation? I'm sure you did, but I have to ask.

You aren't trying to install the 64bit version into a 32bit version of Windows?

This is the first installation of MC27 for you, isn't it? If yes, try installing MC27.0.10 (https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,126781.msg878816.html#msg878816) first, then install MC27.0.34 (https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,127629.0.html) over the top of it.

Oh, the other possibility is a bad download. That has happened before. So re-download, or just download and install MC27.0.10 as above, then update to MC27.0.34.

If all that fails, is there anything in Windows Event Viewer?

The same response (or lack of response) happens when I tried to do everything you listed. It extracts (after suspiciously stalling for some time in 34%) but concludes. The Windows security answer pops up. I answer yes and then nothing happens. Silence, electronic crickets.
I did not see anything suspicious in the Event Viewer, but I am not an expert.

Before trying the actions below, try right-clicking on the MC installation file and selecting "Run as Administrator". That may work. If not...

Okay. The exe file containing the installation is just a set of zipped files. Unzip the contents into an empty directory using Winzip or similar, and then use Norton 360 to scan the whole directory tree to see if any security warnings are displayed. Make sure Norton 360 isn't in Silent mode, so messages display.

If there are no warnings, try to install MC27 by running the InstallLauncher.exe program in the base directory you just created. If there are messages, fix the problems.

The administrator thing did not work. But the zip file did. Norton did not find any threats, no, sir. And installlauncher launched. Thank you for your help and patience.

Thanks for reporting back that unzipping the files worked. It is a weird issue and solution, but it has been reported a few times. There must be some reason for it, but it would be hard to isolate what it is.

In the past, I think once the first Upgrade (major version update) installed correctly, all minor updates should also install correctly.

Looks like new purchases only, not upgrades.

One license can be used on all your computers, within reason.

Could be a problem with your browser.  Try removing the coupon.

Also if your web browser is auto filling fields, it might've saved a previous coupon code. Or you're using a browser extension like Honey or something like that.

Hi, I recently purchased an upgrade from 19 to 27. I wanted to upgrade with a master licence just in case for future use, but accidently (stupidly!) only purchased the Win licence. Is there anyway I can upgrade to the master without buying a full second licence for Mac?

Many thanks.

I have MC24 and got jitter at this music from youtube.
All other Players play fine without jitter except MC24.

MC27 will work with this video? ::)

Hi
I have mc21 windows license. Would like to know if I can upgrade to MC27 Master license. install mc27 on windows and 2nd install on Mac. or do I need to purchase new full master license. do not want to purchase upgrade only to find that I needed MC26 license for the upgrade to work.
Kindly provide link to purchase relevant option.

I assume I would download MC27 version (win and mac) and use new install code.

You can upgrade to a MC27 master license using your existing MC21 license.

Just input your registration code for MC21 here and follow the instructions. :) https://jriver.com/purchase_27_master_as_upgrade.html

Hi there, just downloaded MC27 as an upgrade from MC26. I got an email saying there's a $5 discount with a coupon before the 18th Feb. I did not see anywhere to enter a coupon on the download page, so just want to know if the $26.98 price has the coupon already applied? If not, how can I get the discount?
Cheers, Pete

Please try the updated purchase links in the first post of this thread.

27.0.79 or higher is required to use the new license.

Hi, I have a license for MC18.  The upgrade url https://jriver.com/purchase_27_as_upgrade.html did not provide the upgrade price after I entered the registration code.  Can you let me know if it is a website error or that I have to pay the full price?  Thanks.

Hi, I bought the wrong upgrade version. Master for Windows, Mac, and Linux instead of Windows only. Now I only get the message: "Your license file is valid for a different product" Can I exchange the license?
Best wishes

You'll hear from JRiver today or tomorrow.  Thanks for your purchase.

You can get it working now by downloading a more recent version of  MC27.
