Title: Upsampling is not working - ALSA
Post by: wlochu on July 10, 2020, 04:54:46 am
Hi, I have similar issue as in thread https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=111435.0

Message "Playback could not be started on the output 'ALSA' ... ' apears when DSDx4 is chosen in DSP studio.

Chosen device is plughw: CARD = audio, DEV=0 [ALSA] McIntosh HD USB Audio, USB audio. Hardware device with all software conversions

I'm using the newest Linux Mint 20.

I've updated limits.conf [attachment] file but still I have issue with upsampling to DSDx4

DSD is working fine (Bitstreaming = Yes (DSD))

What else I can do?

Don't use plughw.
Use the hardware device, hw:whatever.
In the Audio device options check the native dsd box if your device supports it.

thx, I tried:

hw: CARD = audio, DEV=0 [ALSA] McIntosh HD USB Audio, USB audio. Hardware device without any conversions
front: CARD = audio, DEV=0 [ALSA] McIntosh HD USB Audio, USB audio. Front speakers

result was the same.

When I have output DSD files in native DSD format checked and Bitstreaming = Yes (DSD) then I have message "Playback could not be started on the output 'ALSA' ... "

I used only native DSD format checked. When I was playing DSD (ISO or .dsf) DAC was presenting 352,8 kHz. As well when I was using DSP and upsampling DSDx4 I received the same message about "Playback could not be started on the output 'ALSA' ... "

EDIT:

W PCM audio format is available:
- auto
- s32_le
- s24_3le
- s24_le
- s16_le

is it ok?

go to a terminal window and run
/usr/lib/jriver/Media\ Center\ 26/alsacap
and attach the results please.

It doesn't support native DSD so you can uncheck that in the Audio->Device options.
You can try DSD bitstreaming under Audio->settings.
That will DoP but that doesn't often go up to x4

Ok, DOP in DSP studio works fine. Thx

I assume that my DAC hasn't support for native DSD added to ALSA and/or the Linux kernel itself :/
