Title: NEW: VST3 Support
Post by: Matt on August 31, 2020, 10:40:47 am
Description
Media Center 27 now supports the newest VST standard, called VST 3.  The older standard, VST 2, is also supported.

There have been several threads requesting this:
https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,125921.0.html
https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,126632.0.html

The program can now install and use these VST 3 plugins.

Instructions
Find a vst3 DLL on your hard drive and install it using DSP Studio > Manage Plug-ins > Add JRiver, VST, or Winamp Plug-in...  You'll need to switch the entry box to "VST 3 Files (*.vst3)" to select them.

You can then view the plugin in DSP Studio, edit its configuration, and turn it on.

It will then process just like the existing plug-ins and VST2 support.

Good addition. There will be many happy users.

Would it be worth adding an organiser rather than trawling through for .dll's and .vst's?

Craig
All VST3 plugins must be stored in either of these two locations:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\VST3

There should be no other place to look.

I didn't realise that but I have older plugins in various other locations.

I meant that if MC enumerated installed plugins like a DAW does then it would be much easier.

For example, I have four Waves plugins, all are available in Wavelab as mono or stereo and the reverbs additionally can be mono in stereo out yet I only have a single WaveShell1-VST3 11.0_x64.VST3, the plugins themselves appear to be single .dll's within \Program Files (x86)\Waves.

So far I'm not having much luck, I'm currently in a situation where trying to open DSP studio crashes MC due to some plugin I've tried to install.

You should be able to remove plugins by editing this path in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JRiver\Media Center 27\Plugins\DSP

If you have one that crashes that you could share, please do.  I'm matt at jriver.  Thanks.

Awesome Matt! Super happy that this is being implemented! Thank you!

https://juce.com/ makes a pretty good framework for multi-platform audio applications. I compiled one of their examples, GainPlugin as both a VST2 and VST3 plugin. The VST2 runs on MC26 no problem. I have attached a screen shot.

When loading the VST2 in MC27, the plugin loads, and the cursor spins for a moment and then I get the mouse pointer back, but the plugin is not seen. So don't know if it actually loaded or not as it does not show up. See attached screen shot.

When loading VST3 in MC27, same behavior as above, except MC27 closes (hard crash). When I relaunch MC27 and click on Options-->DSP and output format, MC27 closes again. The only solution is to uninstall MC27 and reinstall.

Here is a link to the log files and zipped versions of the GainPlug VST2 and VST3 for testing/debugging:

https://1drv.ms/u/s!AkWCC3_FDUYSglky29zRPUuE9THr?e=SW7dSV

Looking forward to seeing this work! Let me know how I can assist...

Kind regards,
Mitch

See Matt's reply to me above about the registry, that will save you having to reinstall MC.

The Focusrite are displaying correctly now but don't appear to be working, they just kill the audio when they're enabled.

With regards to Waves I can only get one shell.vst3 to load, that brings up H-Comp but that gives a format not supported error.
I can't see a way to load my other Waves plugins.

Out of curiosity I renamed my Abbey Road Chambers reverb .dll and Steinberg Wavelab still listed it but threw an error when I tried to open it.
Then I renamed the Waveshell Vst and Wavelab no longer listed any Waves plugins.

That seems to suggest that although the plugins are VST3's they are actually .dll files and they are loaded via the Waveshell VST and I presume that is used for setting parameters like number of channels.

I wasn't seeing anything on the compressor's input meters suggesting that there's nothing going in.

I've had success with Waves VST3 plugins in Media Center 26 by using DDMF Metaplugin64.

I've found that version 3.4.3 of Metaplugin64 works in MC 26.0.106. I tried a new newer version of Metaplugin64 and had problems.

Latest dirac VST3 plugin does not work.  JRiver crashes.

VST2 plugin works as expected.

For now, I will submit report with Dirac and let you know what they say.

I wouldn't bother them with that yet. Matt's work on VST3 support has only begun, give him some time to figure it all out.

Well, for now I mentioned to them about the new JRiver VST3 support and also that it is very early in JRiver 27 dev cycle.

From past experience, I believe their support team will track JRiver 27 development and do some VST3 testing along the way.

Hi folks,

I'm using Blue Cat Patchwork to manage my plugins. I have a Patchwork configuration loading VST3s of the following: DMG Equilibrium, DMG Essence, DMG TrackControl and SPL Twintube. So MC loads Patchwork and Patchwork loads the other plugins. MC only 'sees' Patchwork.

I have loaded both VST and VST3 versions of Patchwork into JRMC27.

If I enable Patchwork as a regular VST (.dll) it works fine, showing "Enabled and processing 44.1 kHz 64bit 2ch".

However if I load Patchwork as a VST3 I DO get audio, but nothing being processed (no signal showing and no output in Patchwork) and an error "Output format not supported" instead of "Enabled and processing 44.1 kHz 64bit 2ch".

Happy to help troubleshoot if helpful, just some feedback for now on this.

Edit: System is Windows 10 64-bit running latest updates and MC 27.0.12 (64-bit). Also reordering PatchWork in the MC list crashes MC, but other plugins can be reordered around Patchwork just fine.

It is my understanding that VST3 files are not dll's but have a vst3 extension. Scanning for dll under vst3 will mis files with vst3 extensions.

I can provide examples of vst3 only files.

Sorry for the lateness. Like Musicmusic had said (it was my initial error too). When choosing plugin, change .DLL on the extention box to .VST3 like the image below.

Note that simply changing the extension can fail many times. For example, vst released as vst3 extension may not work when simply renamed as dll.

There has to be a clearer solution.

Understood.
As it happens, the iZotope plugins I want to try to use have their own .vst3 iterations, so I did not rename anything, I just selected the .vst3 instead of the .dll
It's an interesting new aspect to DSP Studio, which I had not tried much to use before for equalization or noise reduction.

Thank you for VST3 support! ... However I can't seem to get Dirac room correction VST3 to work. I keep getting "Output format not supported" message. I'm trying to run higher resolutions: 176.4\24

Any ideas? - Does this new VST3 functionality support higher resolutions yet? (I'm also using the WDM driver in Windows 64, JRiver 27)

Thanks!

Hello...So I gave VST3 a try using Dirac and it indeed worked, however there was a problem I'd like to report... It seems that the audio delay has been increased considerably compared to VST2 and is now impossible to get the video and audio in reasonable sync. I tried changing the 2 different delay settings in JRiver to no avail.

I was always able to minimize the audio\video delay when using VST2 and Dirac in JRiver. And I'm wondering if this is an inherent characteristic of VST3 or if it can be made more efficient in JRiver.

I am using the WDM driver in Windows.

Thanks for any input. :)

If you had something that worked for you, just keep using that.

Note that live input will always be hard to get to sync properly when any form of DSP is involved.

Just wanted to report that two of my favorite VST3 plugins work, but J River does not retain settings when you restart the J River app.

Plugin: DMG Audio EQuality    https://www.dmgaudio.com/products_equality.php
Plugin: DMG Audio EQuilibrium    https://www.dmgaudio.com/equilibrium

Definitely no big deal since VST2 works fine and has for a long time now, but I thought I'd mention this bug.

Thanks, yes I have reverted back to using VST2. I realize that DSP causes some delay, just wondered why VST3 seem to be creating much more delay than VST2 did. Possibly it's early in JRiver's development? Or maybe it's a problem with my particular plugin? (Dirac)... Either way I was just looking to understand what to expect from VST3.
Title: Re: NEW: VST 3 Support
Post by: hulkss on October 13, 2020, 06:19:45 pm
I have to stay away from VST3 and used VST2 also.

The DIRAC VST3 plugin does not recognize multi-channel properly and will not process multi-channel audio. Works fine as 7.1 with VST2, however, it will not pass through a timing reference signal on another channel above the first 8.

I can not load Waves Plugins. WaveShell does not work properly in JRiver. As a work around, I install Waves plugins into DDMF Metaplugin which also must be the VST2 version in order to offer the save buttons in the upper right of the attached image. The DTS Neural UpMix plugin works fine as a VST3 inside of Metaplugin VST2.

I don't use VSTs normally, although I have looked at a couple of specific ones previously.

I was surprised that I couldn't set the VST Display as a Visualisation in Playing Now, so that it is always tied to the top pane of Playing Now, rather than floating free as a separate window, all the extra DSP bits.

Have I missed something?
Would this be possible in future?

I am trying to use Waves NX which is VST3 but has many separate plugins inside the single .VST3 file, which handle stereo, 5.1, ambisonic, etc.  The only one that MC27 allows me to see is the ambisonic one, while I want to use the stereo one. I can use it with DDMF Metaplugin - see attached screen captures.

Hi there, Newbie here.

I did get Waves Studio rack to load (which works as a shell/host that allows waves VST3’s to be selected) – however took me a few goes to be able to play anything without MC27.0.66 crashing.

When I did get it to work, none of the VST controls had any effect  - noticed Output format not supported, and now I can’t alter that setting as it crashes all the time now. (i'll keep at it).

I did also notice that I only seemed to be able to select the mono vst’s in Waves Studiorack - no stereo.

Might also try the demo of DDMF Metaplugin,

Thought this might be of interest, Ron

JRiver ver 27.0.66 (64 - bit)
HoRNetThirtyOne_x64.vst3 file crashes, but the HoRNetThirtyOne_x64.dll file works

JRiver ver 27.0.66 (64 - bit)

Both PC's have other VST3's that work, I'm not sure if it has anything to do with this plugin having a spectrum analyzer that may be causing the problem here.

Running Media Center 27 on Windows 10 Pro 64. Utilizing Penteo 16 Pro VST3 plug-in to do the up-mixing duties.
When switching tracks that are a different bit depth and/or sample rate I am getting a pop/click/thump sound.
If I disable the VST3 plug-in all is happy no matter what file I switch to and from. This problem also happens with the older Penteo 5.1 VST3 plug-in.
I would suspect my EVGA/Nu Audio soundcard but with Penteo defeated it switches perfectly.
I have an inquiry to Perfect Surround awaiting their response.
I have messed with the crossfade settings endlessly and it does not seem to change this issue.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

EDIT: It appears to happen randomly when even switching within the same bit depth and sample rate!!  :o

All the Best,

Gary
Title: Has anyone use VST3 with DLNA Server?
Post by: kr4 on April 28, 2021, 02:28:25 pm
When I try to install the DiracLive VST3 plug-in with DSP Studio under a DLNA Server, it fails in two ways.
1. The plug-in is not properly loaded because some of its options do not appear.
2. Playback start is delayed for 10-15 seconds and, when play starts, the plug-in is not in effect ("Current playback doesn't support processing").

It works fine with the regular DSP Studio when using WASAPI/ASIO outputs but I do not have any other VST3 plug-ins to test with.

Has anyone else used them with DLNA?

Make sure that the server is converting to a format that supports DSP Studio, and of course make sure you configure DSP Studio for the server.

Then be sure to associate the renderer with that server.

Hi

I am using several VST3 plugins and they work. Great that JRiver now supports VST3!

Thanks.  Knowing that, I will apply myself to resolving this next week.

I am still having this problem.
1. Converting all my sources to 7.1 channels, PCM and 192kHz or less.
2. Setting server output to 24bit PCM.
3. Associating the target renderer with that server.
4. Same settings work with ASIO to that same renderer's USB input.  Same settings work with DL defeated.
What am I missing?

Still struggling.  Here are the crash and log files.  Can someone take a look at these please?

Hello JRiver team., Installing voxengo marvel GEQ en JRiver 30 is failing to install. both the .vst and .dll. In my previous versions 28 and 29 it worked flawlesly.

What could be causing this. btw, JRiver 28 still intalled in this PC and .vst3 working fine

Try the 32-bit version of MC.
