Title: Need to run on Win XP32
Post by: Glimmie on February 06, 2021, 05:26:18 pm
I need to run JRiver on an XP-32 machine. PLEASE, I don't want to hear the word  SECURITY!. I can't even  find a browser that will work without refusing to connect due to security.

This is a dedicated Juke box application with no internet connectivity. And if it would be breeched,, there is nothing on this machine of value, just music videos already in the clear.

I have JR 21, 24, and 25. I loaded JR21 on the machine with the license. It's giving me a "failed to download LAV splitter filter" error trying to play .ts files.
Can I add the filter manually?

Or what else can I do.? This XP machine has a specific video card  I need to use and it only works on WinXP. It can output true 525 interlaced video. No standard video card can do that, at least not to broadcast specifications. Card is a Nvidia FX4000-SDI. The -SDI is the important option as it has a hardware interlacer.

JRiver (like many, many other software developers) dropped Windows XP support a couple years ago. Unfortunately there's nothing that can be done about it as I don't think you can even install Media Center 27 on Windows XP. Assuming you could even install it, newer versions of Media Center leverage Windows OS features that don't exist in Windows XP so it won't even run on Windows XP.

So, yeah, unfortunately you're probably out of luck here. And as you know and pointed out already, you honestly shouldn't be using Windows XP even if it's disconnected from the internet (that and I would be surprised if LAV would even work on hardware that old + Windows XP). Just saying. :)

I'm not trying to run MC27.

I have MC21 and the license. And the software shows it's licensed to me as it was before.

Software does not age or wear out. If MC21 worked on WinXP, which it did, there should be no reason it can't be loaded onto an XP machine today and run. Yes it won't have the new version features and will still have all the bugs, but again it should work as it did in 2008 or whenever.

Some components, like lav and madvr, are downloaded when they are first used.  For some reason that's not working.

Do you have a backup from when it was working on an XP machine? You could copy over the necessary files.

Out of curiosity, why are you trapped like this? I used to have a card similar to what you're talking about. I'd think if you were doing professional broadcast work, you wouldn't be reliant on a PC video card like that or need to run MC. And for non-broadcast work, many video cards can output 480i (which is 525i if you count the blanking) over HDMI. I've done it with an AMD graphics card. Or to directly output to a device with composite inputs, there's something like this:

The entire broadcast and post production runs on PC cards since before 2010.

Black Magic
AJA
DVS
nVIDIA

and many more.

Many of the HDMI cards do a software re-interlace which is not compliant to SMPTE 259. Only the FX4000-SDI works for me for 525i

But... SECURITY!!!!   ;D

There are likely solutions out there to get 525i SDI working for you. What about just replacing the Jukebox's screen with a regular 4:3 LCD with VGA or HDMI, not feasible with some handiwork and duct-tape?

The problem with MC21 is that the URLs it knows to download the CODECs may no longer be correct - things keep changing on the internet.

You can try this:
- install MC25/26/27 32-bit on a Windows10 machine (Trial versions are OK)
- play a few files so that the necessary CODECs are downloaded and installed
- copy the folder %AppData%\J River\Media Center 27\Plugins to the Windows XP machine

Not sure if some Registry keys are also needed. You'll have to test.

While madVR might work that way, I'm fairly certain that the newer LAV Filters that ships in newer versions of Media Center don't support Windows XP, requiring Vista and newer so your idea may not work here.

Right. You can manually get an older LAV release and extract it to the proper folder (same with MadVR):
https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases

Also, not sure which VC++ runtime might also need to be installed, if any. You may need to install VC++ Runtime 2010, 2013, 2015... doesn't hurt to install them all.

The OP said the XP machine isn't connected to the internet, that would explain why the files aren't being downloaded.

Well spotted, Richard.

Glimmie, you will have to make the necessary arrangements.
