Title: Can RPI4 play video via JRiver perfectly ?
Post by: Facel on January 29, 2022, 12:28:46 pm
Is it wise (possible) to use an RPI4 as a video player with jriver ?

I just did some tests with an RPI4 - 2Go, the videos ares stored on an Synology Nas, and also on a intel Nuc running JRiver as media server.
(wired connexion)
It is not running flawlessly : a lot of jerks and bad synchronization of image and sound

Is this due to the lak of memory of the RPI4, or is there any special configuration to set ?

Did you set video to JRVR?

What version of MC are you using?

The RPI4 is generally a bit too weak to call it "perfect", but depending on your requirements you can certainly make it work. a 2Gb model is not the best start, though.

Yes video is set to JRVR
I am using the last version of MC28 running on the last available version of debian (bullseye) on rpi4

The full version numbers would help.

I did try some different configurations for playing video.
In both cases I was monitoring JRiver via JRemote on my Iphone

 1) RPI4 having JRiver connected to the Library Hosted on an Intel Nuc (running MC 28) via access key  => playing video hosted the hard disk attached to the Nuc  result in a lot of jerks and bad synchronization of image and sound.
(I did process any "Media import")

 2) RPI4 having JRiver connected to it's main library, and playing video files hosted on a NAS via SMB3 => Playing video is OK after having imported media into the library.

in both case monitoring the RPI4 via VNC is not suitable (lot of jerks).

questions:  => is there any other choice regarding Library & Media import that could be preferable ?

=> what is the benefit of having 4 Go or 8Go on the RPI4 ?

What storage device are you using on the Pi? SSD or SDCard??

I am using an SD Card

I am using an SD Card
So then when you are not playing from Samba (which acts like a local filesystem) MC is going to try to buffer the video content to "disk".
In your case a slow (by comparison to SSD with regards to writing) storage device.
In the Media Network options there are checkboxes for disabling the buffering to disk for audio and video, try turning them on.
You'll lose seeking ability on some videos but it will prevent writing to the SDCard.

Both checkboxes for disabling Audio and Video Buffer to disk are already checked.

2Go of memory is probably not the best choice (Its is only for testing the concept)
By the way is there any trick for boosting the Rpi4 for playing video ?

I'm not sure then.
Is your Pi MC client Media Network->Media Client options set to not convert video?

Thank you bob for your posts, they help me to understand my misunderstanding ..

In fact the RPI4 is not playing the video files hosted on my NAS through a smb share as I beleived.

I have (rapidly) followed the excellent tutorial made by "Weaten" quick Start Guide for Installing JRiver Mediacenter 28 on an rPi4 2-4-8GB" ... and I just realise that if my understanding is correct, the video folder on the NAS has been copied (with all the video files) on the SDCard of the RPI4 ..

I have also noticed that under the raspi-config menu, under the " 6 Advance Option" menu, the A2-GL Driver menu is missing.

Do you have a cooling fan on your rpi4 ?

If not, it may start thermal throttling the cpu when the RPI4 runs hard.

@skidmata  => Thank you for your excellentsuggestion.

Previously I had not connected the fan because it was excessivly noisy.
With the fan on the jerking and the poor bad audio timing desappeared.

My first impression is that the image quality is not as good as on the Shield (when playing the same video file of course)

FYI : I still have the GL Driver option missing in the raspi-config menu !  (so I can't select the GL (FFake KMS) option)
