Title: Many pauses for buffering
Post by: mikepo on October 24, 2022, 11:29:50 am
Running MC 30 (also tried 28 and 29) on M1 iMac with latest Monterey. Haven't used MC for many months, but when I run it now I get frequent (ranging from a minute or two to tens of minutes) pauses for buffering. Pauses last about 5 seconds. Prebuffering set to recommended 6 s. Have closed app, rebooted, etc. No problem playing for hours on Apple Music or VLC. Music files are on external Thunderbolt drive; tried 2 different drives. What's next?

What is your playback device?  That's almost certainly where the issue lies.

Check to see what your audio device is in Tools > Options > Audio Device .  If it's not set explicitly to your headphone audio output, try doing that.   That probably won't be it, but it's worth trying. Stop and restart MC after you make any change to the audio device.

There's some possibility that sample rate has something to do with this; but again unlikely.  You can look at your sample rate conversion settings in DSP Studio .  Again, this probably isn't the problem.

Re-reading your post, it seems this problem just started.  Can you think of anything else that has changed on your Mac around the time this problem happened?

I'm tempted to recommend a reinstall of MC30, but you say it happens on 28, 29 *and* 30.

As you can see, I don't have a lot of good ideas here!  Good luck.

Brian.

Output device is set to headphone jack. Sample rate is "no change".

Problem just started because I haven't used MC for a long time. Maybe not even since I got the M1 iMac.

Any more thoughts?

Some weird things to try:

* Set all sample rates to be converted to 48,000 Hz.  That's what a lot of the new Mac audio devices want.
* Delete and reinstall MC30.  It should keep your library intact and find it when you reinstall.  Do a Library backup just in case.

Maybe someone else has some good ideas?

My M1 Mac Mini sets max 96 k 2ch 32 bit floating, no problems with buffering. MC29.
IMac problem?

Where are the files stored?
Start "Activity Monitor" and see if something (MC?) is using a lot of CPU.
