Title: MC30 suddenly stopped functioning on Mac mini
Post by: Lodewijk_Ramon on November 22, 2022, 09:51:04 am
Hi,
I was running MC30 (until this morning build 25), without any problems. It's running on a Late 2014 Mac mini with 16GB memory and 2 TB Fusion Drive.
This afternoon I heard the ventilator running on high speed and found out that MC was totally blocked. After a restart MC30 didn't start at all (not responsive). I deleted the app and downloaded the latest build (32). Same problem. I tried several builds of MC30; they all got stuck immediately. Checks on the system and the disk didn't reveal any irregularity.
Now for the time being I am running MC29, which works fine.
Does anyone out there have the experience or even better a solution?
Thanks in advance
Lodewijk

Very similar problem started to happen recently.
Running macOS Ventura 13.01 on Mac mini 2018, 3.2 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7, 32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4.
I was running JRiver 30.0.27 flawlessly with Ventura. It started behaving weird recently. The whole audio was kind of blocked, JRiver took forever to start and other applications were not able to play any sound as well. Some other running applications quit unexpectedly.
Restarted coreaudiod, rebooted Mac - no luck. Re-installed JRiver 30.0.32, same thing.

For admins: if you are asking for more details (log, etc.), please post clear instructions. Not many users know how to "turn the logging", where to look for logs.

The wiki has a topic on Logging.

I wish I could. MC30 doesn't start at all. So I can't turn logging on in MC30.

Did you try reinstalling MC?

Did you try reinstalling MC?
Yes I did. I tried several builds of MC30. Installing another build (from the .img-file) after erasing the existing app.
MC29 runs fine.
Additional info: My first thought was a corrupt database, because I built a new playlist (in MC30) before this happened.
So I restored my time-machine back-up.
I would have liked to restore a backup from the MC-library backups, but I can't do this without MC30 (or can I in another way?).

I would recommend deleting the MC30 Library directory.  This holds the database files, so that should clear everything out.  In fact, I would uninstall MC30 (delete it, or drag it to the Trash).  Then I would remove at least the MC30 Library directory:

Code: [Select]
/Users/<your username here>/Library/Application Support/J River/Media Center 30/Library
Or you could just delete the entire MC30 support directory:

Code: [Select]
/Users/<your username here>/Library/Application Support/J River/Media Center 30/
Once you've removed one of the above folders (directories), reinstall MC30 and try again.

Brian.

Hello Brian,

Thank you so much for your help. I followed your suggestions and deleted the entire Application support MC30 library. Subsequently reinstalled MC30 (build 32) and imported last weeks MC29 library.
It runs like before. Thanks again.

PS1 Perhaps you should add (for less experienced Mac users) the following: to make the directory visible in finder use  "Shift+Command+Period" to show hidden files.

PS2 Perhaps this is not your turf, but I still hope the iOS remote (version 3.36) will soon be updated to fix "Quick jump on lists when article sorting is enabled".

regards,
Lodewijk

Awesome.  I'm very happy you got MC30 running again!

I don't work for JRiver or anything like that.  I'm just a customer.  Their employees read this forum a lot.  Bob is one of them.

Regarding the "Library" directory being hidden:  You're right.  It's not obvious to most people.  I had to look it up myself several years ago.  I actually wasn't aware that command-shift-<period> would reveal hidden files.  I usually use command-shift-g (for "go to folder) and then enter "~/Library" (without quotes).  That puts me in my Library directory (the Mac library, not to be confused with the JRiver MC Library!).

Again, happy to hear that you got MC30 working again.

Take care,
Brian.
