Title: MC 15 Feature Requests
Post by: soulcancer on March 21, 2010, 06:44:27 pm
If these features are in MC15 i'll buy it. I like MC14, but from 13 to 14 there was not that much of a reason to upgrade. hopefully there are some big additions this time.

1) Locked Views. This has been asked for a long time now.

2) A minimized side bar, like in outlook 2007.

3) Sync over WiFi (I'll even pay for an Android and iPhone app)

4) Ability to move items around on the side bar, and maybe even hide some that I never use.

5) A "Play Radio" option on the side bar or toolbar.

6) More video encoding settings.

7) Better implementation with Windows 7. like recently opened items on right click, the song name in the little preview, and some transparency

If no locked views, maybe the ability to set a main, and secondary A, and secondary B windows then have the options of "open in main" "Keep secondary A as X" "keep secondary B as Y" options, n stuff.

Time for a licence upgrade me thinks :D

And i would really love to see what soulcancer proposed, especially the locked split views! It's such a shame to have such a great feature and not being able to "tailor" it to your own needs.

And as for wifi sync support, i've been using symsmb with my n95 8gb and MC set up to sync to attached network drives for quite some time now and it goes just fine :) i can even make phone calls while sync is in progress. If only n95 wouldn't be so darn slow transfer-wise :(

Go JRiver!

Since this post converted into a feature requests post, i have something "weird" to propose:P

The ability to attach a small icon into a field!

Let's say for example, that i create a "Hi-def, SD" field for my movie collection depending on what i choose for a movie, it could show the HD / SD icon instead of text. Something like vuze had for its movie database and it would be something that would look really nicely in theater view. what do you think ?

If i understand what you mean its like custom image fields. Right now we can create as many custom 'text' fields but the only image field allowed is that of the album art.

I've requested custom image fields many times for the very purpose you mentioned, as user defined icons because they're easier to spot in a list at a glace :)

Something like vuze had for its movie database and it would be something that would look really nicely in theater view. what do you think ?
Could you post a pic ?

Host it on some image site and then link to it here.

Hi everyone,

First of all, I would like to say THANK YOU to all JRiver team for doing a great job!!!

Since I am a netbook user I will really appreciate if in MC15 we are going to see more optimizations for memory footprint, CPU usage and anything related to it. May be special view mode, for instance?

Many users at this forum follow with the development team and install every new build, so may be an incremental update functionality will be a good thing.
Also, it would be very useful to implement Russian language pack. I think that lack of Russian language prevents a huge lump of users to choose MC.

In conclusion, I would like to propose MC team to think about releasing an official iPhone (iPad) app which could be a remote control and a mobile browser for MC.

I hope that my opinion will be treated with consideration and we will see the above mentioned functionality in the future release.

Thanks

I've mentioned this a few times and hopefully J River will take some notice. I'd like to see albums only when artists is viewed in the library. Right now, it shows both the album and artist, the artist seems pointless.

Here's what i mean

Black Sabbath

Paranoid, then songs from that album

Vol. 4, then songs from that album, and so forth

As things stand, its like this

Paranoid by Black Sabbath, then songs underneath

Vol. 4 by Black Sabbath, then songs underneath, and so forth.

If this feature is included i'd buy the license for MC 15, if not, id probably just stick to the version i've got.

By the way, does that bother anyone else, or is it just me that this bugs?

Ah feature requests for MC15... seems that just 6 months ago MC14 was coming out.  the pace of development is great and astounding and makes us end users happy.  so what's is store for the new version??  absent any roadmap it difficult to divine anything that hasnt been discussed by the developers already.  some thoughts in a perfect world would be...

start moving towards a client/server architecture

expand library/metadata functionality

My feature request based on my needs, but also already asked by others:

1) Locked Views.

2) Podcast Directory in the handled sync settings, example:

(http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/9602/podcast.th.png) (http://img87.imageshack.us/i/podcast.png/)

all the "mediasubtype: podcast" would be synched to that path

3) In the handled sync settings, ability to select separate encoder settings for each playlist, example:

(http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/5391/encoder.th.png) (http://img221.imageshack.us/i/encoder.png/)

   Favorites playlist: lame v0
   4/5 Stars: lame v2
3 or less stars: lame v5

4) Ability to shrink cover art on the fly when syncing, I dont think any handled player needs hi res covers, also will save space, example:

song.flac with a hi res cover of 1200x1200 and 2mb size, when syncing in the handled device an mp3 with a 500x500 200kb cover

5) Custom Image Fields
what Arbiter said about image field for SD / HD would be nice, and even more if we can custom it to our needs

I think the jump from mc 13 to 14 is HUGE, so many features added, and im happy and willing to pay if mc 15 brings more user request features !

Also, i know i sound like i hate the program but i really love it, along with the split views maybe have a dedicated playing now view that can be set to vertical or horizontal. in this playing now have some actual buttons on top like update order, and some of the other right click-able options there. Also what i would REALLY like to see if that playing now view, or locked view is done, when i click on locate album, it opens in the main window, not my really small playing now view on the right. Follow what I mean here? And complete implementation of Performer inside the main audio window, just have a little performer logo next to them to know its streaming not downloaded.

Another useful feature you can add is dxva support, i know it can be done with directshow filters, but implementing it as a native option would be great, something similar to what media player classic internal filters does.  If is not possible, maybe you can add an option to not open the video in mc, but lauch it in other app .

FWIW, I use MC primarily for WAV audio files I rip from my own collection of CDs.  I would like to see the stacks feature expanded to allow the following:

Define stacks individually to be containers of tracks if so desired.  Or, a similar but new ability added called "containers."  When you have one piece of music made up of several different tracks it would be great to be able to put those tracks in a "container" in whatever order you want and MC would treat them as one entry in the library.  That way those music files would always be played together and in the same order, regardless of shuffle or which track is picked.  Like stacks, you could easily expand or collapse containers as well.

I spent several hours searching through the forums yesterday looking for posts regarding how to do this in MC.  I found many requests for such a feature, but they were all old.  This led me to believe that perhaps one of the latest versions of MC introduced this feature.  (I'm still using v12.)  But I downloaded v14 to check my hypothesis and don't see that the feature has been added.

I understand there are workarounds such as combining files or using playlists without enabling the shuffle feature, but I would like to keep individual tracks separated as individual WAV files and be able to use the shuffle feature.  From all the posts I was reading last night there are lots of others who would appreciate this feature being implemented as well.

This is the one last "thorn" left for me since I started using MC back in 2006.  I was ecstatic when split views were changed so their window settings were made persistent, meaning if you had album/artist view in one pane and playing now in another when you close MC those views would remain intact when you opened MC next time.  (That was the second to last thorn...)

Thank you for listening.

 - Big one for me... abilty for auto screensaver lockout in theaterview.. no one is using htpc. she goes to sleep next person that sits down has to enter password for THERE account or family account.. this way those of us with kids. can lock them out of our adult libraries. (i dont like my 9 year old being able to have access to my R-Rated movies. or My Adult funny pictures etc...)

 - ebook .cbr reader or at least the ability to see our ebooks, .cbr files Thumbnails within jriver and then a plugin that when we clicked on one it would open the comic rack program for us or auto open adobe reader from WITHIN theaterview.
ability to install use and visualize we can find. winamp visualizations for example.

change the top display view bar in theaterview. so its larger text and similiar to the awesome bars you guys made on the bottom. so its usable!

basically most of the stuff i posted here (i know alot of these requests are way out in the future)... http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=55597.msg381230#msg381230 (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=55597.msg381230#msg381230)

the ability to have recently imported view stay forever in standard view! meaning when we import files that view we have setup will stay, actors, artists, description, etc..

more support for autometa plugin. Simple to use, works great.. more functionality, music ability, the ability to add other sources for checking info, adult sources, amazon, discogs, etc

have images for music downloaded in playing also in theaterview, be cool to see the artist images from the net in theaterview as a visualization

Hi all,

I'd like MC 15 to have a dedicated Opera Lyrics option- for the classical music lover.
MC would be the first ever audio program to display opera lyrics.
The reason I'd like to have this as a seperate option is the different nature of Opera lyrics. They are much bigger than ordinary lyrics and have a more complex structure.

Cheers!

I know it has been posted before, but a better looking theatre view is the only thing that is keeping me from using MC as the wole media-program on my HTPC, an example of the kind of nice look i am wishing can be seen here: http://www.meedios.com/images/static/themes/evolutiondark.jpg.

I hope the link is ok, is not meant s an endorsment of your competition, the product with the skin i have linked to doesn't even play media by itself.

For the multizone playback a Party mode option that links the zones into one playing now view and start stop controls that control the zones as one.

Sync settings and perhaps MC library backup to the j.river cloud. When I install MC on a new machine I should be able to just verify my license and download my settings etc. And start using MC.

I first floated the icon (Overlay) idea many moons ago, perhaps this time  :D

With regards to the Find/ Replace and similar dialogs, something that would IMHO be of much greater use would be a little MRU (most recently used) list. I've personally got 4 or five different expressions that get used here, and this would be a simple addition with plenty of potential time-saving benifits.

Agree with the ability to clean file properties on import as well. Far too many stock MP3 tags are simply junk which needs to be rewritten.

Other things I'd like to see:
* An internal MD5/ CRC checker.
* Improvements to the MyMovies importer. Noticably, I'd like the ability to remap the fields and remove some of them :) (No use for the coverart it provides, and I use Genre already for base classification, so this wants to be moved to Subgenre)

Hi,

First thanks for the great software.

Here are my wishes for the next version:

1) The most obvious: locked views especially for playing now view
2) Search field for each split view or something similar: I always find myself looking in playing now when I want to search the library
3) Command to reorder the playing now by artist (for remote control purpose)

I also think there should be an audio only version of MC. But maybe you're heading that way with MJ14.

Please Please Please

Add to the "Media sub type" field a choice for "Music"

or as suggested previously, lock in the standard values  and allow users to add there own subtypes in additionally.

Title: Re: MC 15 Feature Requests
Post by: HTPC4ME on March 23, 2010, 03:52:00 am
i second the editing of subtypes - adding of more. Be great to have documentaries. small video clips, self help movies,  music ringtones, soundboards sections.

ive also noticed in my library some files could be categorized in movie subtype and music video subtype. it would be nice to be able to put those files in multiple subtypes.
GF brought that up the other day. ohh this (song\documentary\clip, strange file. I  literally had no clue where to place it) belongs in music videos under rock. but ALSO DEF belongs in our movies subtype under The Disturbing and Utterly Strange Genre(Actually Keyword). But it wouldnt allow me to do that so i had to goto folder location copy the file (luckily was only 230 mb) and place it on another part of my hardrive (Rename It) so that i could have that file in multiple sub types. yes im wasting hdd space. but at least the file can be seen in theaterview in both those subtype locations.

ive also ran across this with musicals, now i have musicals in movies subtype because they are like a movie, but they could fit under subtype music videos as there own genre... musicals. the same goes for music documentaries those i think could go under both movies and music videos. just something i've noticed and have sometimes caught myself scratching my head while tagging... hmmmm pink floyd the wall... awww movie? or music video?  others the doors, wizard of oz, sound of music etc...

i guess why this is important to me and maybe others. is after years pass. we will all have extensive libraries. And When your in the mood to watch that one classic film from your past. ya wanna be able to find it and quick and when your not sure if its under music video, movie, documentary(another point.. where does a documentary go?) right now i have tv documentaries and movie documentaries, i find myself forgetting which subtype i put that documentary under.
I dunno, maybe others have got better sorting skills then i do. but for me its tough when it comes to tagging time and trying to look ahead. Ok... which subtype will every one look first to find this certain file, and it's backfired on me a few times already. so i have to sit down have a debate with the crew and we all decide. ok... it goes in this subtype.

I've had this exact same problem with all movies and music video's as well when it comes to genres. i cant place files in multiple genres, because if i tag a movie say action;drama it shows up in theaterview as a genre named action;drama. meaning there not 2 seperate genres, there considered one. so i have had to tag all my files by using keywords as genres(which then allows me to have multiple genres but there actually keywords), but by doing so it is lowering my sorting capabilities meaning if all genres are named by keywords i cant have sublevels. so now i have keywords as action, drama, documentaries, documentaries nature, documentaries psychiatry etc(Makes my keywords list\View Quite Large and not as organized)... but if we could have multiple genres one would always be able to find the files because then they would be in multiple locations (as they are now with a keyword view)meaning you could have genres for wizard of oz as kids and family, scary, classic movies, top 500 movies. for a genre of documentaries you could then have keywords for the types as i stated above(allowing you to sort your documentaries as keywords under the documentary genre.)

if genres were to get implemented i know for a fact i would sit down and redo all my tagging and change all keywords to genres and make my keywords be subtypes of genres like i explained for documentaries. because in the long run it would make finding files much easier because they would be in multiple genres elivating the guessing work.

maybe this just physically wouldnt work? I Don't know And Please Correct Me If I'm doing Something Wrong, if all movies were allowed to have multiple genres and we had a genre of documentaries that had keywords in it for sub genres that would work. But then if we choose action movies (and our theaterview settings were genres, keywords, name) would it show keywords as unassigned? (then we would have to click unassigned for those action movies to show(due to action movies not having keywords) (leaving us with one more step to see those action movie names) or is it possible that if action movies dont have keywords we could make it show all names instead of unassigned, bringing us straight to those action movies? this would be ideal for me. sometimes these scenarios i run into are hard for me to explain.

thanks i know sometimes i run on with my posts. but i like to make sure i explain it with as much detail as possible.

BTW.. if i'm the only one experiencing this with genres, keyword, sub levels, media subtypes in theaterview, and these are issues i have caused for myself due to lack of tagging knowledge please direct me where to go in this forum so i can fix this. Cause it would really help us alot for sorting and finding files faster in our library.

Feature suggestions (most of which have been suggested before):

1. Support reading and writing the TORY ID3v2.3 tag for mp3 files (and the TDOR tag for ID3v2.4) and the ORIGYEAR Vorbis comment, compare this thread http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=50762.msg361205#msg361205. Synchronize the TORY and ORIGYEAR tags into one field in MC and write from that field back TORY for MP3 and ORIGYEAR for flac.

2. Better Synchronization (read/write) between MC fields and common Vorbis comments
MC Field                  ID3v2.3                 Vorbis comment
Album Artist            TPE2                      ALBUMARTIST (if only ALBUMARTIST exist in file write only that comment) [Fixed in .101, thanks!]
Disc #                    TPOS                     DISCNUMBER [Fixed in .95, thanks!]
Publisher                 TPUB                     ORGANIZATION [Fixed in .102, thanks!]

And better handling of the MC field Album Artist when writing data back to mp3 files, as suggested here http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=53022.msg362772#msg362772

3. Support reading and writing the ITUNESCOMPILATION (TCMP) ID3v2.3 tag for mp3 files and the COMPILATION Vorbis comment.

4. When importing to a MC list type field, let the user choose the field delimiter(s) (with ; as default).

5. Support copying of large playlists to paste/export the data to Excel, compare this link http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=55761.msg378846#msg378846

6. Make it more user friendly to add a custom list type field, compare http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=55761.msg378846#msg378846

7. Support (calculation and) writing of replay gain - track and album - into the the tags as per today's de facto standard. Most other competing software can do that. Compare http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=53196.msg363242#msg363242

8. Native support for, at least, sending music to Squeezebox players and preferably even better integration with Squeezebox Server (syncing different players, adding music to a playlist in different manners, showing the song playing on the Squeezeboxes etc.). Collect automatically and show in MC in MC additional information about the song now playing, i.a. artist biography/photos, album review, tour schedule, lyrics etc. Charge extra for this, if necessary. Compare for a sketch the muso album browser for Squeezebox Server.

9. Add support for AccurateRip and tagging from AllMusic Guide (for an additional payment if necessary) like dbPoweramp has. If you do that, and what is said about replay gain in 7 above, I would use MC also for ripping.

10. Introduce macros, that the user can save and easily reuse, for common tagging operations.

11. The ability to show and handle in MC the char-set used for the music file.

12. Let scroll by typing respect the settings in the ignore articles when sorting option, i.e. let scroll by typing ignore the article "the" so that you can scroll to an artist whose name starts with T, as further explained here http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=53241.msg362720#msg362720

13. Make it a user option to write or not write Tool tags.

Another thing that went through my mind (yes i have a brain, isn't that nice?:P) Would be an indicator near the "Podcasts" selection that would show the total "new" podcasts, maybe like itunes has for its podcasts menu (badges with number count)? That would be something easy to implement (i think) and it would greatly enhance the podcast feature because now you actually have to browse each and every feed separately to see if there's any new podcast available from the sources selected.

you have the views..set it up the way you like it, if you want it more "report like" with numbers use the detailed view and your own criteria for example imported last 7 days (today) (yesterday), not listened to...detailed view in combination with searchlists is a killer (at least what i think  :))

Theater View really needs a dedicated view for Series.
You can create this, but its a bit of a fiddle

1) (not really needed but nice) Create a View under Video called TV Shows - I have a file saved of this view, but can't seem to find a way to attach it to to this post

2a) In Tools --> Options --> Theatre View, Add a new Library Item under Video then rename it to "TV Shows".

2b) In the details section, click Add, then add the library fields "Series" and "Season".

2c) Click Set Rules for Display, then Import/Export and paste in "[Media Sub Type]=[TV Show] ~sort=[Series],[Season],[Episode]" (no quotes) - I think this should work but essentially you want show just TV Shows set in the Media Sub Type, then sort using Series, Season and Episode

This should now give a nice view in both theatre view and normal view

Nothing wrong with your approach, but MrHaugen is talking about something else, more than just setting viewing criteria.

Coming from the same angle I still find my requests (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=53074.msg361663#msg361663) from 9 months ago pretty valid. Consider them retyped.

An easy one! (hopefully)

I love ripping audiobooks and listening to them either with MC or sync them to my device.

My preferred method of ripping is to rip each disk to a single track (like the join tracks feature in itunes) and label each track as follows:

Gone With the Wind 01-10
Gone With the Wind 02-10
Etc.

This way they will play in most mp3 players that only play in Alpha order by track.  It eliminates the mess of having hundreds of tracks for longer audiobooks.

I would like MC to have a "Rip multi-disc Audio program" feature where I would be prompted to Enter the title of the Audiobook in this case and the total number of discs as well as a separate bit rate and encoder setting than used for typical rips.  It would also prompt me for the "Author/Artist" for tagging purposes.

Then MC would proimpt me for each disc in succession using the title as the album name and the track name adding the disc number and total discs in the format above.  The track number and disc number fields would be tagged as well. After each disc was ripped it would eject the and request the next one until the total discs # of discs had been ripped.

Each disc would get ripped in to a single file, I won't need the cue file.

This Would make this whole process very smooth and would limit my tagging to just droping the cover art in to the tracks.

Thank you.

My Proposal: Real Right Pane navigation for Playlists and Internal Explorer.

I started a separate topic for that because I feel very strongly about that one feature compared to other Ideas I have because

- I predict that it will have mass appeal to users at all levels..
- it would make my MC experience much better
- it is very simple and MC 14 is already close to the behavior I desire.

MC REALLY needs some work on it's device sync flexibility, at least for me it does.

1) apply volume leveling to tracks on sync.  This can be done without losing any quality or re-encoding for mp3's using the free mp3gain.

2) ability to apply a filename rule for the tracks sync'd.  There are certain situations I may want the filenames formatted differently than what's on the PC.

3) ability to use something like [Playlist]\[Artist]\[Album]\ as a folder rule.  I sync multiple playlists to one device.  Right now I don't believe you can use [Playlist] to generate a folder for the track based on the playlist name it belongs to.

4) being able to add an auto incremented number to the beginning of a sync'd tracks filename based on it's order within the playlist.  So the tracks playback in the same order on the device as in the playlist.  I use several devices that don't support playlists.  Maybe, [auto number]-[artist]-[title]

5) support maybe VBscripts.  Would be nice to be able to write my own script to accomplish some task that isn't supported in the normal interface.

Honestly I have come across another program that actually does all these things.  I won't name that program here because I wouldn't like someone coming by my place of business and touting my competition.  The reason I bring up these things that I'd like to see is because I'd prefer to continue using MC and not switch to something else.  MC has a great interface and it can't be beat when it comes to keeping the library organized.

That is far away from a dedicated series view my friend. I have used what you describe, for many years, but it gives little of what is needed for series. We need images and info for Series and seasons, not only for individual episodes. We also need indication of viewed/not viewed on Series, season level. Graphical indication is the most pleasing for the eye.

This could all be done with todays notes functionality and adding another view to TV imo.

7. Support (calculation and) writing of replay gain - track and album - into the the tags as per today's de facto standard. Most other competing software can do that. Compare http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=53196.msg363242#msg363242

Oh, and I forgot what looks like a bug: If you search for files where replay gain is <empty> you get also files where replay gain is 0 (or the offset value set in the options). A search for an <empty> tag should not return results where the tag actually contains a value, 0 (zero) or what MC considers to be 0, only results where there is no such tag in the file or where the tag exists but has no value at all entered (null).

I would like to see more TV changes.  I am currently not using it to capture tv, but use gbpvr.
Maybe these items are not true any more, but I have not seen any updates that allow this:
- Clear QAM support
- support 1 MC system to do the recordings ("TV Server"), saved to a shared folder, but allow submitting from any other remote MC system (TV Clients). That includes client epg lookups, click on show then record options.  This would also show if there is already a show set to record at this time, and give conflict options. This works well in gbpvr and I believe in BeyondTV, but not very easy to do in MC. It would be nice to be able to use 1 program (MC) for all of my items - music, tv, pictures.

What a great idea; this would be very welcome.

I would like to see multiple location control improved.  Specifically in regards to TV, Timeshifting, and library sharing.

For example, I have an HTPC with my raided hard drives in an aluminum case above my Receiver, below the TV.  The TV is the only monitor for the HTPC.  It's currently also hooked up to U-Verse, but I'm hoping/planning on dumping it soon.  This will result in the HTPC being the only input into the TV/Monitor.

I have a local library stored on this machine.

I have a local library stored on my laptop.  I do most work, tagging, ripping and listening on the laptop.

My wife has a laptop, it also has a local library.

I have a dual digital TV tuner in the HTPC.  The local library has these tuners configured correctly.  I record TV to the HTPC Raid 1 drives partition locally for TV, and long term storage and music and photos are on the RAID 5 drives.

I can watch TV on my laptop if I am using library server on the HTPC, and have the HTPC served library as the "local" library selected on the laptop.  This won't let me actually delete watched shows, or move them to someplace to delete later as even a temporary solution.  I have to either go to the HTPC or remote in, or navigate to them in windows explorer to actually delete the files.  this is not ideal.  I also cannot setup any timeshifting with this library either.  it appears I can, but it doesn't actually record.

I can't watch TV at all with the local laptop library loaded, the laptop has no tuners, so no channels can be selected.  it also seems to not let me even watch the recorded TV on the HTPC thru the TV interface.  I can't see any channels, so I can't set up or see or change any recording of TV from this library either.

I have tried setting up another library stored on the HTPC, to a shared drive, and use that library from the laptop, but it's very slow at some things, mostly changing views, but I think also in the starting of playback.  this doesn't solve all of the TV usability issues, it allows me to load TV channel data and the program guide, but says Media Center encountered errors and to verify the location, which are both the same.

I have been playing around with this setup while writing this and testing, and so far things are going reasonable fast, more so than the last time I remember trying it.  videos will not play well, which seems to be latency, but might be filter/setting related, I haven't playing in this library much, mainly just quick testing a few weeks ago.  This setup is closest to working it seems, but still takes some work to get setup and still falls short of "just working".

I would love to see a way where I can just set up a profile on MC (which I could copy from another profile) and set up all of my settings, and my library (views lists, etc) and whenever I launch MC it asks which user, I click my picture or name, enter a password if I want, and my profile loads up and looks and works the same for the user (me) no matter which computer I launch it on.  if I'm on the laptop, it knows where all the media is, what hardware I have in my laptop, network speed and it will downsample any media that can't stream full-bandwith full speed, let's me rate anything, rename anything, move anything, whatever, and if I am on any machine (my laptop, my windows mobile phone, iPhone, andriod, netbook, PS3, X-Box 360, in wall LCD screen, iPad, whatever) which is connected to my network, when I go to use MC, it asks who I am, and everything is set for me, and all of my views, playlists, stats, shows, whatever is there for me.  it always looks the same, as far as the platform will allow, but I always have full control.  if I start MC from the laptop, play something, get up, go to the living room (HTPC) and launch/open MC and it's not been controlled in the last XX minutes, it asks which user (or I hit switch user), it logs me in there, logs me out of my laptop and asks if I want to continue playing whatever I was playing on the laptop or whatever (TV, Music, Movies, Netflix, Hulu, custom?) else. Let's me start TV, set recordings, everything any install is capable of.

If I'm on the HTPC, I want that local playback, unless I specifically choose another zone.  If I connect with my phone, I can set it's local zone to what's connected to the outdoor speakers, since I'm likely outside if I'm connecting on the phone, I could change this to whatever by default, including locally on the phone.

The reason for users vs libraries is that my wife certainly would not rate Rob Zombie a 5, ever, so my smartlists irritate her.  My recorded TV is not always what she wants to see, and hers is NEVER what I want to see.  I would like her to easily copy or accept playlists or views or whatever from me, but to maintain her own library and preferences.  I will set up the computer and network and library and path settings up in her profile (copy from mine) and she can tag away and customize from there.  delete most of my smartlists, make her own, and enjoy it her way.  but whenever she opens/launches, she sees her stuff her way, no matter the location/connection point, platform ability adjusted.

This will work even if launched remotely from a portable/thumb drive at a friends house - it can be setup via a wizard in MC.  "I wish to use this thumb drive from a remote location OUTSIDE my local/trusted network."  (MC makes the settings internally, gives a couple of suggestions for setting up the firewall and router), verification testing in the wizard, and bam, she visits a friend a few blocks away, or in Mexico, launches, it connects, tests bandwith, and streams her music as efficiently as possible.

Mainly, I don't really want the commonly requested client/server, I want a smart profile system.  You just set up user profiles (like libraries now), and they have full control (or not) wherever they login.

MC self-communicates to know that this location does not have a TV card, but that one does, and the TV files are stored at V:\Videos\Recorded TV and this machine is connected via Wireless G; convert/downsample stream to required level and render where it was requested.  I want it to be smarter than me, and know how to just work :)

I think if you could make it just work, anything like I've described, with anywhere near the simplicity of a set-top box for the masses, you'll have LOTS of converts.

Here's to hoping :)

I love the 3-D Wall / Showroom view for guests to scan my collection, but really would love to see it refined.
With a large library it can be a bit cumbersome.

For example:

Allow an alphabet to be displayed (perhaps below covers display) and selected to reduce the number of Album Artists displayed and make it easier to find a particular selection.

Allow display by a chosen Genre for easier selection.

Allow mouse wheel to be customized (personally I'd prefer it slide the wall rather than zoom).

1.) Automatic movie tag mapping from online movie databases (ie:IMDB) to movies

users should be able to import video files, be prompted to enter the name of the movie for MC15 to associate the relevant movie information from IMDB mapped to MC15 movie meta tags into the library with the video file.

2.) Server-client library multi-profile database

-I have a Windows OS RAID 5 server that holds all the music, pictures and movies.  All media importation and tagging is done on client computers.  The importation process transfers the imported files over the network to the server.  The MC14 database is a shared network folder also on the same RAID server, shared by two computers with MC14. Currently, I have to make sure the Network Drive Mappings on  both PCs are consistent so that the addresses in the database work for both client computers.

While this system works, I would like to see a more user friendly database system.  Perhaps one that involves a database application installed on a Windows OS server, accessible by clients on the network.  This should be done in such a fashion so that I don't have to worry about sharing database folders, drive mappings, read/write locking, file consistencies.

It would be nice if the database could host multiple libraries so that I could select the library I want with the client interface.

3.) Blu-Ray
-fat chance on native support, I understand, but if possible please support the opening of Blu-Ray folder structures and interface with Total Media Theater for playback.

4.) Dvd ISO Export
Like in MCE2005, dvds that have been imported to the library should be able to be burned back to a dvd as a backup.

5.) Better DVD Disc Import
-some dvd's have multiple video ts folders, as a result I don't know which one to press import on.  So please make this process more automated.

Do you mean multiple IFO files?  I've seen this.  I don't think I've ever seen one with multiple Video_TS Folders.
Technically I guess you could change the view to only show VIDEO_TS.IFO files.

Status Bar

    * Separate the updating Tagging Status Bar (i.e. "Saving tag changes (# remaining)" or "Done saving tag changes.")  at the bottom from Selection Status Information of the view (i.e. "17 Files (1.4 GB - 17:50:29)"). Often I would like to see how many files I've got selected or how much time but the updating tagging status takes precedence.  It would be nice if both sets of information could be displayed at the same time, since there's a lot of room in the status bar down there.

I've been hoping for this for ever. Currently if i'm playing a track i just rated, i can't see any info on number of other tracks i select. It's such a basic feature, I think it should be added to MC14.

This is a tweak as much as a feature request (I think)...

When using Rename, Move & Copy Files I'd love to have a check box that reads something like...

"Also move/copy files in the same directory" ... which, strangely enough, would move or copy any other files in the directory of the file being moved/copied - that may not be part of the set of files that you're currently using.

(Think working with, and moving video files, and ending up with orphaned text/image/etc files)

This is a constant problem for me.

I request an audio view option for “Pains and Artist Logo Thumbnails”
Audio files are capable of multiple album art tags, most of which i personally find useless.
The one exception besides “Front Album Cover” is “Artist Logo”.
I would like the option to view all artists by their band logo.
Then when the logo is clicked i would like the bands “Album Thumbnails” to appear.
At this point the view could either function as the existing ones do or it could go even further by then
showing art for each individual track. This last option would be nice but also fairly useless because i
don't think there are many albums that come with unique artwork for each track. NIN's albums The Slip
is the only one i know of.

Artist Logo addendum
The Artist Logo could be integrated without the use of audio tags.
An alternative could be to use a dedicated folder where jpg's are stored that
are simply the artist's logo and are named after the artist. J river could link to this folder and
automatically use the Artist Logo that shares the name of the Artist.

Same for TV shows.

Also for TV shows some standard fields for handling playback sequence.  For example:
Firefly was butchered by FOX.  They were aired out of order, the original pilot was aired last and several episodes were never aired.
Dr Who (2005).  Every year there are 'specials' that fall outside of the normal 'season/episode' count, but that are part of the running storyline.
Look at both of these on TVDB and you will see that handling these are built in.  The 'specials' show up at the right place alongside the seasons (in addition to being all in season '00').  For Firefly you can see the links at the bottom to sort by DVD order or original air date.

Not sure if this is the place to post requests for new features ..... but here goes.  MC is my media hub for everything via direct HDMI connection and through media servers.  I build video playlists just like I do audio. I even mix audio and video so that I get G-Force and WhiteCap visualizations with audio is playback. This looks sensational on large screens at parties.  However, there are a couple of things that I have been living with and would like to see them enhanced. I have not been able to find solutions for what I am suggesting.

1. Video Transitions so there is no video stop/silence when going from one video to another video/audio file.

2. Image playlists that I could link/embed into an audio file. Each time such an audio file is played, the attached image playlist would be displayed with transitions. MC currently support an image play list to play while another audio playlist is playing. I would like to see it by audio file rather than playlist.

3. Radio files. I currently download/create m3u files with links to web radio. Playing these files in MC results in streaming audio.  Because MC thinks these files are playlists, it stores in the Imported Playlist section of Playlist with a name of HTTP Stream. I would like to see it imported as data or audio where they can be easily manipulate (genres, quality, etc) just as you do with audio files.

I have been a long time user of Media Center (version 8 was my first, I think), and I applaud you for all you have done. There is no other that can match all that it does with such ease.

Fernando.

2. I also want the ability to remotely control & configure MC either via a Web interface or once again an Android that does more than just plays music but allows you to remotely configure MC.

Rick, the Connected Media is a very nice feature for sites that have multiple streams available from 1 link. I especially like the record function. However, The current method I use of importing is less cumbersome than having to add each individual stream. It would be nice if I could add these imported entries to My Connected Media from Recently Imported.

I use Media center while entertaining at home and at outdoor events where we project at night.  Everyone loves the 3D visualizations and the rest of them too.   But the 3D ones have no way to cycle through them and after a few minutes it requires manual intervention to change the visualization.  What would be very nice is to be able to have visualization cycler support that covers all the visualizations.

Advanced functionality is not required but could include cycle time delay, selection of visualizations to cycle, and even visualization configuration per cycle step.  This would make it easy to set up a complete set of visual and playlist support and never have to touch the player.

I have been working around iPod compatibility issues with our household's newer iPods by building a mirror set of my music files all converted into MP3 format under an "iPod Library" folder on my server. When I rip some new music, I then run the "convert" process in MC14 again and it skips the files aleady converted. I then use iTunes on a laptop to watch this iPod Library folder and deal with the interfacing with the iPods. This seems to work well but is a bit clunky.

What would be great is if I could synchronise the "iPod Library" folder with the MC Library so that changes to the MC Library would be reflected automatically in the iPod Library. I tried to do this with MC14 but could not find a way.

Thanks,

Will
Title: Re: MC 15 Feature Requests: Product Differentiator: Audio Tracks from DVDs
Post by: farpoint on April 03, 2010, 11:38:08 am
Want to have a product differentiator that people would love and would set your product completely apart from the crowd?  ;D How about the ability to rip the sound tracks off a DVD to MP3s with tagging support?   I have a libray of music DVDs that I would love to listen to in my car and have as part of my audio library.  As with all ripping there needs to be usable Internet lookup and tagging.

But it would be a significant marketing tool to be able to say:

Add Movie Tracks to your MP3 library!  Rips and tags MP3 Audio Tracks from Music DVDs.

In response to the above post for "Audio Tracks from DVDs"
Try a program called  "DVD Audio Extractor"
It will do everything you need including DVD-Audio discs.
The tagging part isn't as simple as you want though, because there are different tracks, and track orders,
depending on what audio you are ripping. Some discs have 2 channels for all tracks, but only
some tracks with 6 channel. Its not like a cd where there is just one list of available tracks.
I rip the 6 channel audio from mine and use j river to edit the tags and play it.

Somethings that may already exist but I don't know how.

a way of ignoring ", The"  , " and" , and "&"..etc when looking for duplicates.

Generate a soundex code field from another field (would be helpful in checking name and artist spellings)
Soundex codes begin with the first letter of the surname followed by a three-digit code that represents the (first three) remaining consonants. Let the Soundex converter do the tricky work for you and capture the nuances of the coding scheme (such as coding adjacent like letters as one). Enter above the surname that you want coded.

Soundex Coding Guide

1 = B,P,F,V
2 = C,S,G,J,K,Q,X,Z
3 = D,T
4 = L
5 = M,N
6 = R

The letters A,E,I,O,U,Y,H, and W are not coded.

I don't know why that's not done already. But if you copy them into a custom tag, they'll be saved as an extended tag. That's what I've done, so I hope it's effective. :-\

The rating value is stored in a file tag by default. This works with the MP3, OGG, WMA, MPC, APE, FLAC and WV file types. In addition, WAV and AIFF tagging can be enabled in Plug-in Manager, though these tags are not often supported outside MC.

It is also stored in the WMV tags (video) or sidecar files (other video formats if the sidecar option is enabled) and in the image tags (if the image file format can be tagged).

In general, the rating tags may not always be compatible between different programs (there are various implementations), but at least they should show up inside MC.

OIC. There it is "hiding" in the POPULARIMETER tag as |1, |64, |128, |192 and |255 for 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 stars respectively.

I still like my custom tag backup. It allows me to compare the current rating to how I originally rated the track. It makes it easy to recover when ratings are inadvertently changed.

1) A sort of 'tile' view, which would show the thumbnail on the left and user-definable data on the right. I would like this especially for movies so I could see the movie cover on the left and then on the right see the title, rating, and description of the movie.

1a) To go along with that, I would like to be able to be able to group things into tiles so that I could, for example, have media center list by artist with tiles for albums showing some basic album info to the right; same with (and perhaps especially) tv shows. I think this is covered by/covers several other feature requests in this thread.

1b) One way to tackle the above might be to just create a way to allow any web developer to create custom interfaces (basically the entire right pane in standard view) using web standards. Then any web developer could create custom interfaces that could be shared. (Unless this is already how it is?)

1c) I should also specify that I'm talking about having these things in standard view; I primarily use MC on my computer, and don't always want it full screen.

2) Web image search for cover art. What I'm thinking is to have an option in the context menu under Cover Art for 'web search' that would open a new window that would have a search field (maybe search Google images, or maybe even have a drop-down selector like the search bar in Internet Explorer and Firefox) and a results pane. You'd type in a search term and it would display the images it finds. You could then click the one you want and MC would set that image as the cover art for the selected item(s).

3) Ability to create groups for podcasts

4) A number count of newly downloaded podcasts in the left pane next to the podcast that haven't been listened to, as Arbiter also suggested

5) Ability to create custom media subtype (or at the very least add one for Music), and ability to create rule to exclude sub-types (I don't want to see podcasts in my music library, and don't want to create a rule to show only those without subtypes).

The above are the ones most important to me.

6) To go along with runemail's idea of saving settings in the cloud, it would be great if it could get the license info and install key by simply authenticating to an account. So when you install, instead of manually getting an .mjr file it would just ask you for your account username and password; it would then log in, grab an install key, apply it, and then ask if you want to restore your settings.

7) Some intelligence to parse info from filenames. I would use this most for TV shows, which almost always have a season and episode format of "s01e01" or "1x01" (for "season 1 episode 1"). The function to fill in details from filename is great, but sometimes you end up with a large number of files with mixed naming conventions, so it still takes forever to fill in details.

Other people's suggestions from this thread that I'd like to second:
soulcancer's # 2, 4, and 7
sunfire7's # 2 (the lack of this option prevents me from using JRiver
xtacbyme's suggestion for multiple genres; I think this is really important for movies, but would also be just as useful for music
RainCaster's request for better smartphone support (Winows Mobile for me)

I would buy MC 15 if it included beat matching during transitions between songs on audio playback.  In addition I love the new playback range feature and it would be great if MC 15 would take into account a song's playback range when calculating playback time total for a group of highlighted songs.

I love Media Center.  Thanks for the continuous improvements.

I put in another post regarding this but would really like some feedback from others as to what they think
I actually use Windows Media Center for video now as it is superior for this reason. I just stick to JR MC as it is far better for audio.

Why do I think Windows Media Center is now better for video?

If you download a plugin called Media Browser. It displays all your movie & TV information incredibly well including backdrops and heaps of info.
You can get this info really easily using software called MediaScout or MediaCenterMaster
The info is stored in xml files. You just need to set out your folder structure in a sensible and logical manner which is easy to do

So my suggestion is if JR MC can read the same info as downloaded by MediaScout and then it display it in theater view, it would be heaps better.
All the information is downloaded by other software from websites such as IMDB and TVdb.com
As all MC needs to do is interpret and display info that is already there so I cant imagine any licensing issues.

What do other people think?

I've only had a quick look at this—it seems to require quite a bit of work to get it all installed and configured properly, but... I did get far enough to notice MediaCenterMaster uses MyMovies XML files. Although I don't use it myself, MC does have the ability to import these already (see wiki (http://wiki.jrmediacenter.com/index.php/MyMovies)). But...

...here you mention MediaScout and not MediaCenterMaster. I didn't investigate MediaScout any further after reading the developer has ceased work on it—so I don't know if that makes a difference to how your meta data is saved (assuming you even use it).

If you haven't done so already, I suggest you simply import your video files into MC. You may find it imports all your meta data automatically. All you need to do then is configure Theatre View to display it the way you want it. I guarantee it will be heaps better. ;)
Title: Feature request - Ability to Tag People in Photos
Post by: chriswale on April 05, 2010, 04:05:00 am
The feature that I would like the most in MC15 would be the ability to tag people in images. Just like in Facebook.
And when viewing, mouse over images would display people’s names.

At the moment, I tag people in MC15 using a list-field, but this is not ideal, as I don't necessarily know which name corresponds to which person in the image.

Furthermore, the people tagger could be integrated with the Facebook uploader. So when I upload an album to facebook via MC15, it could automatically tag the people.

Currently I tag people once in MC and a second time in Facebook - this takes up a considerable amount of time!

Post by: chriswale on April 05, 2010, 04:19:26 am
Another feature I would really like to see in MC15 would be the ability to resize the width filter columns above the list.
With automatic sizing, some of my columns take up too much space, while others don’t show enough information.

Otherwise, it looks like I will just have to get a bigger screen!  But then it's going to look silly.

Example:

Unless you install a radio tuner (and I've never heard of such a thing), you're not going to be able to do that unless the station is streaming to the internet (which most are). If a station is streaming, then it's an "internet radio station." The problem you're likely running into is many/most of those would rather you listened to them via their website, and take measure to hide their stream URL's. Can MC15 have the following features?

1.   Dedicated “Now Playing” Plug in for Live Messenger that works in x86 & x64; The ability for the plugin to manipulate the Song title on the fly (I know there is a plugin but it has never worked for me in Windows 7 (32 or 64))

2.   To give the user the choice how to use the program. After Install the user can choose from

Audio (No Video Fields or extensions)
Video (No Audio Fields or extensions)
Audio and Video

(Audio and Video will always contain the image views and fields)

3.   Drag, drop and movable task bar

4.   Double click anywhere on the taskbar in locked mode will minimise or maximise

5.   If MC 15 loads in codec’s first it should activate a system sweep and only install the codec’s that are out of date and do not conflict if the user wants to use a 3rd party media player.if a conflict is found it should offer the user the choice of installing it or not (depending on the usage mode of the user)

6.   A full 64 Bit version!!!!

I would like to buy MC15 but as I am a MC13 user I will have to buy  a full licence for MC15 (I guess)

So in order for me to pay the full price I would like to buy a media player with everything I need.

The suggestions on this forum are cool...especially the Audio rip from DVD (Blue Ray too?) and the IMBD database link (however I do believe that the full IMBD chargeable! (Maybe that could be an offer in MC15 as a subscription))

Thanx  ;D ;D ;D

LOL! Thanx  ;D Never scrolled done that far!!! I have a lot more questions now but they belong in a different thread!

In today’s media players it is only worth having a video player that players ALL formats! For example I have codec’s that allow me to play MOV files in WMP 12 without the bloated QuickTime and Apple software) but the MOV files will not play in MC13, either because it does not see the codec or it sees it but it is not registered for MC13. Even though this file will not play in MC13 it still appears as an option in the right click context menu because the "Enable Shell integration" is checked!

I suppose what I was looking for was the one click choice as an extra menu to have MC15 handle all Audio or all Video Files! If it is chosen that MC15 does not support Video files then after a reboot all Video extensions (in autoruns) and context menu's that are linked to MC15 are un registered and the video tab in MC15 is gone!

The best way would be to allow MC15 to see the codec’s that WMP12 can see and therefore it would be used as the ONLY media player

Regards

I just installed the Beta (and decided to buy 15), and it's great. I played some pictures and then switched and played some music. The pictures were still being displayed in a slideshow and I saw one I liked. I have right-clicked the image and there is no way I can see to find where this image is in my library (internal or externally). I have lots of pictures, and would like an easy way to find it. Some of the options when I right-click are: Print, Delete Image, Set as Desktop Background, Advanced Image Controls.

Could you please put a "locate" link in there? I like the locate menu, but it is not here for the image slideshow.

Thanks!

There are a number of different things you could do to get information at this point. Press <space> to pause. Double-click to return temporarily to Standard View. There, a tooltip will show the file name, path and other information. A details view could be used to show some information about all the files, or a tag window could be opened (there's a link below the image) to show all information about the current file. Double-click to return and press <space> to resume the slide show.

You can also add items to the context Send To menu. You might use this to open the image in an external editor, or open the containing folder in a file manager. Send To is available on the image context menu in both Standard View and Slideshow.

If you want easier access to information about images while viewing them, consider using a Details view in Preview Mode (select "Preview Image" from the context menu). This will give you a large view of the image with simultaneous viewing or access to tag information.

My list  ;)

Resizable panes per View
Custom divider per view
Custom tooltip per view (including on and off)

The math function is great, please let us also do math in detailed view = summarize integers

When expanding a stack then included stacks should be "selected"

Be able to add custom Date fields

The possibility to collapse and expand semicolon delimited fileds with a single click

Timestamps for files so you can see the change dates even for files that are not written to

Be able to exlude stuff in the panes http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?PHPSESSID=4583ababdd57d18e3061184db037cf29&topic=53564.0

Colors http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?PHPSESSID=4583ababdd57d18e3061184db037cf29&topic=51268.0

Place the "clear Library" command more childsafe..with a little bit of unluck you can easily clear tons of work

Be able to set if you want to see details or thumbnails in a searchlist, so when you select the searchlist it will show your choise.

More work on Notes, the ideas is great but needs more... (it's also unreliable, notes can disappear)

General: please don't exclude mediatypes from nice features, for example sidecars is only for videos, another example is that you can't use folder .jpg for Datafiles and neither quick coverart lookup for datafiles

color options in the tree

How about the possibility of viewing hidden videos/files?   That way, I could watch a recording in progress, ala ZoomPlayer.  In my formerly favorite media app, you can watch a video in the process of recording.  At the end of the "buffer" the player remembers the last position that was playing, and resets, allowing you to seamlessly watch the balance of what has been recorded in the interim.  This process repeats every time you bump into the end of what's been recorded.  I hope I've described this satisfactorily.

Please! Please! Please! add some better video Metadata support!!!

When J River started development of MC14 they looked at the competition; MediaPortal, VMC/7MC, XBMC etc. etc. and I saw the almost exact same thread for MC15. For ages now all of these have had Video Libraries/Plugins that supported metadata scraping from online sources; IMdB, TVDB or TMDB.

Request:

1) Can we Please have metadata scrapers for TVDB (for TVSeries) & TMDB (for Movies)?

2) Alternatively or Additionally an .NFO scanner; MyMovies.xml files are great for Movies but does not support TV Series, at least not at episode level.

3) MediaInfo support (as mentioned above SD/HD but preferably by codec and resolution)

This is my only gripe with MC, it is fantastic for Audio (practically unrivalled), but Videos in Theatre View desperately need the Metadata to make the 10-foot interface even worth a look on an HTPC. Please look at those other programs properly to understand what is missing from the video library!

Please look at those other programs properly to understand what is missing from the video library!

I have. None of them come close to what I have using Personal Video Database (http://www.videodb.info/forum_en/index.php) to import and manage my video meta data, and PvdImport (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=54918.0) to automatically import it to MC. You may prefer an "easier," less comprehensive solution, but there are a number of those as well. If you're interested, there have been a number of discussions here in the past about the merits and feasibility of MC providing video meta data solutions versus using these third party ones.

I'll look at it again, last time TV Series support was really quite poor and matching episodes was dubious at best.

I'm not advocating for it only to be handled internally, but with the Wikipedia lookup function added I just thought that was the way it looked like it was going. Personally the addition of an NFO import option for TV Series would make things so much easier; a lot of people probably use their own preferred application to gather metadata, and just a way of getting it from local files into the library would be good.

I don't think I'm the only one who finds this feature somewhat lacking; I've seen it mentioned above at least once and I probably mentioned it back at MC13 & 14 as well. Also I note that MC has added YAMMM support, YAMMM itself will be adding TV Series support at some point and if MC will support those files to be imported then all good and well.

Edit: Tried it again, redone the RegEx and imported TV Show properly, however it will not scan the episodes in automatically, I have to select by season and run import and even then it has trouble (silent mode enabled and disabled). I have 132 TV Series, I'll be buggered if I'm going to sit there and work my way through that unaided; I remember why I abandoned this program: There's many much better alternatives that handle TV shows properly!

AutoMeta on the other hand is p!$$ easy to use and it works, great job to the author, would probably like a little bit more configurable metadata but in the absence of ability to import from file will suffice for now.

MC still needs a drop shadow.  MC feels so left out and 2D compared to other programs.

WebRemote is a great feature, much better than what was available in previous releases.  Looks sharp too.  I keep an icon of it in my FireFox bookmarks, which run down the left-side of my screen, but WebRemote for beta MC15 is the only site which does not have a favicon.  It is simply the default rectangular webpage.

Very small request I realize, but makes WebRemote look more polished.

I have a lot of minor gripes, but nothing in comparison to the multi-year annoyance that is the inability for the sidebar to stay expanded after MC shutdown once certain selections are expanded. It might work better on startup for people with tiny monitors but for me it's been an enduring pain in the butt.

Also, another multi-year butt pain is the handheld auto-sync not actually being an auto-sync.

I'm very interested on a audio preview of titles (by ONE right an ONE left mouse click), as it has been my wish posted some month ago. To manage this thru zones is a good workaround, but to activate previews by zones is not very comfortable (like right mouse click -> send to -> play (zone x) -> play or add). Does MC have that in future releases? Thanks a lot! :-)

How about a 3d view for DVD's? you can view dvd files as 3d albums but they only show up as CD covers and cut off the bottom of the DVD cover. Unless i'm wrong (which is a distinct possibility).

I disagree. I've been using xbmc for films and will probably continue to do so. I used personal video database to import information and artwork into jriver MC but it's no way near as good as what xmbc can do. Fair dos, your way allows better customisation. But i don’t need that. I want it to get some information and a neat looking cover (after all, I’d like to watch the film rather than write a thesis on it) and I’d like it to look pretty. It would be nice if JRiver MC could have native iso/nrg image file support as well

If that's all you want, your interest doesn't seem to be the same as the person I was responding to. And I suspect you're both missing a subtle but critical element of the meta data issue. JRiver doesn't own or have the rights to any. End users can legitimately (arguably) scrape information from some sites for their own use. A commercial application doing the same thing as a feature for all it's users is more likely to be seen as a violation of copyright.

I believe the only choices available to JRiver are to license something like Allmovies, or make it easier for users to implement their own solutions. The problem with the first option is it would probably only satisfy North American users with only a mild interest in movies and none in TV series—and then they would have to hope the cost could be passed on to users. In the longer run, what is going to serve us better is the development of technologies that facilitate the effective exchange of data generally. A full-featured, easy-to-use, standards-compliant plugin system, for example, is going to be far more effective than anything done right now with the limited objective of delivering pretty covers.

I agree, that's probably why the Wikipedia solution was implemented.

On the other hand, an improved plugin API in the area of GUI would make it a lot easier for MC users to deal with the plugins. I am of course talking about customized context menu choices accessible in the plugin API, "selected files events" in the API etc. If that had been present in the first place, some plugin developer might have implemented the Wikipedia solution *for* JRiver.

This has been requested by many people in the plugin forums and one can only guess why no such functionality has been implemented in the first place.

One wish - visualization plugin from winamp or wmp support please. I'm very weary of products SoundSpectrum.
There is no alternative for many years. I have no success, wrote the authors of some visualization software with the request to add the support MC.
Time to do something in this direction - if third-party developers do not offer visualizations for MC, MC may will support third-party programs.

I think it would be my biggest wish to MC15.
the other wishes I have already written in forum threads).

Make it possible for a playlist to lock the order (sorting-order).
In the past I've had the dreadful experience of messing up some carefully ordered playlists, so it would be nice if they could be (optional) protected with a kind of "Are you sure you want to change the order of this playlist"-question.

15.0.33 (4/27/2010)
6. NEW: Added the ability to lock a playlist to prevent unintended changes to the order or files.

Hi,

I am a fan of "raw" format, so I use "raw" in imaging, and wav in audio
Both are not good for metadata
Adobe has found a great way, using a sidecar .xmp file, containing all metadata, and making it safe, autonomous, independent of a database
Why not using the same way for music?

Media Center supports WAV tagging.  Search on Interact for more information.

Or you could losslessly compress your WAV files to gain error detection for improved data security.

Allowing the program to take several command line options as input, instead of just one.

+1 - in general, I'd like to see better automation possibilities via scripts  / command line options.   One example:  Force MC to open with a certain zone selected, e.g. There: Zone 1 when using TRemote.

The ideal solution would be to introduce the concept of scripts - namely that MC could be started with a flag that tells it to read a certain text file.  That text file contains lists of commands as per the current API,  and MC executes them in turn.  MC could either be opened and told to process the script file, or, if already open, executing MC again with the flag would tell it to run the list of commands in the current instance.

I would think this isn't too hard to do, as there is already an API allowing control of MC.  We just need a way to execute a series of commands in a script.

In the future, this could be expanded by the inclusion into MC of some kind of scripting language, like Lua or TCL, both of which are often integrated into programs to give them scriptability.  With that in place, one could write complex scripts with variables and conditions and loops and completely automate various MC functions.

That would make MC hugely modabble, without requiring the user is an experienced coder able to make plugins.  I think you would see the amount of user-contributed modifications to MC would explode, because scripting langauges like the above are really easy to get in to and powerful to use.

Anyway, I'm not proposing that for MC 15 necessarily - but I think the basic ability to execute a sequence of API commands would be easy to add, and immediately useful.

DLNA Access control.  I replied to a thread elsewhere about this subject, but I thought this is where it really should be posted.

In light of the ability to have multiple (virtual) DLNA servers, it would be really handy if you could restrict access to each server by either MAC or IP.  On my network, the media servers get permanently assigned IPs from DHCP, so it doesn't matter to me whether it is MAC or IP.  However, for those folks whose IPs may change, it might be more useful to filter against MACs.

It seems to me that this feature should (ideally) be configured so that you cannot even CONNECT to a media server unless you're on the authorized MAC list.  That way, I could have one sever for "adults" and one for "children".  The children's server could be limited to only PG content, while the adult's could have no restrictions on it.

I think this feature is about the only basic function that MC lacks.  Even WMP has the ability to control access.

DLNA Scheduling:

The ability to set "run times" for each virtual DLNA server.  In conjunction with access control, would permit the system to not operate during certain hours (such as the middle of the night) for purposes of parental control.

DLNA TOP-LEVEL CATEGORIES v. FOLDERS

I'm not sure how to express this suggestion, but let me try.
On my D-Link DSM-520, when I connect to WMP, I get a display that (in large fonts, with graphics) shows me three categories:
MUSIC
PHOTOS
VIDEO

When I connect to MC, I get the same MUSIC, PHOTOS, VIDEO but, instead of looking big and containing graphics, they are displayed just like any other folders.

I BELIEVE the reason for this must be that the DLNA top-level packets sent out by WMP indicate "categories" whereas those sent out by MC indicate "folder".  It would be nice if the media player displayed the prettier presentation.

DVD Navigation via DLNA

Although most of my video library is in the form of MPG files, extracted from DVD with no loss of quality, there is always the problem of those DVDs which have "forced" subtitles or foreign language films where I need the subtitle display.  If one could navigate the actual DVD menu and select subtitles, audio tracks, etc., when using the DLNA server, it would make life really easy.

Presently, if I drop an entire DVD into a folder and import it, it plays the main VOB but it doesn't see the menu.  Unless I'm doing something wrong.

Allow views to be refreshed when the track changes.

I have a bunch of views using the new isplaying() to display the currently playing track against similar tracks (genre, artist etc) in the database but when the track changes I have to manually refresh the view to display the newly playing track.  It would be immensely useful if the view would refresh when the track changes....

I looked at similar issues concerning other applications in the past. The result was that i don't really think its the applications job to control access to a given computer resource. In Linux terms you could use a simple Access Control List - you may be able to do this in windows but I think the easiest solution is to install a firewall. I use COMODO firewall, which is highly configurable and can block individual IPs/ports, and I believe also offer MAC filtering.

I think this will be a similar answer for parental control which is outside the scope of a Media Player and more deep routering in the operating system.

OK, here's something I would like, but am not sure if it can be done already.

I like to randomise my entire collection, but every so often I will hear a song that makes me want to listen to the entire album from which that song came from. I would like to be able to suspend the randomised playlist (without losing position or starting all over again) and jump to playing the entire album which I have selected. When the album has completed, carry on with the next song on randomised playlist I suspended earlier.

This would need to be done simply as a play option or right click on the playing now song.

Cor, what I would give for this functionality on the iPod.

Perhaps a few more clicks than you could like, but it can be done now. Right-click and select Locate Album. Right-click on the album and select Play - Add (as next to play). Locate returns you to your main view. If that's a Pane View, you can easily modify the selection to be played. For example, your album will be selected, but you might right-click on the "5" in a ratings pane to send only the highest rated tracks to PN.

You might also be interested in creating views using IsPlaying() as described here (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=57461.0). I use an "Artist PN" view to select additional tracks for PN while listening to otherwise random play.

Yeah I agree with this, this is related to my wish for a spesific "random skip" button in addition to a normal skip, becsause i like to jump randomly, and then when i hit something good, play in sequence a while, and jump randomly again. It can be more or less done today, but it takes time and/or many click.

If one were able to assign different IP addresses for different virtual DLNA servers, then one could use the access control features in Windows to control access.  But that doesn't exist.  If I were to set up 4 diffferent IPs for the DLNA server, then they would appear on all four IPs.

There is a nexus between the DLNA server functionality and access control.

I'm starting to think it would be immensely useful if we could add Navigation items to the right click menu.  This would allow us to right click on a track and jump to, for example, smartlists built around the selection.  It might need an isselected() option (similar to the new isplaying()) to work so that we know what item is being selected.  But it would allow us a lot of new functionality for working with the item being right clicked...

I suppose this would be a convenience. But a more permanent and versatile solution is to save a playlist of whatever is burned/sync'd. Not only do those provide a permanent dated record (with notes, if necessary), they can easily be excluded from (or included in) future burns/sync's. If there's a lot of them—they can be managed using playlist groups (e.g., "recent" and "old burns/syncs") and those groups used in other smartlists. You could, for example, create one to fill a CD with "highly rated tracks synced more than once last year." 8)

It would be nice to have an internal field that would show a list of playlists a track has been included in.

I see what you mean, but that route seems to be getting a lot more complicated than what I was hoping for- I really just wanted to set up 1 simple smartlist and then 1-click burn a random disc of songs that I hadn't listened to in my car in a while.  Thanks for the response.

Although I have used it, I don't find 3D Wall in MC15, and neither Wiki nor the Forum-Search for '3D Wall' is giving any support how to use it.
So - explain for Dummies: How to find 3D-Wall in MC15  :o ?!

In Customize View... set View as to "3D."

would like to handle better network/removeable media
- need to have a field or visible option: show/hide network & removeable files, the current "Removable" field in the tag shows blank for a USB drive
- have the ability to change the drive letter: sometime when a drive re-connect, it will have a different drive letter, but the path... stays the same

is there a plugin or a function to remove duplicate,
either based on actual checksum (without the tags, to improve the match accuracy)

or by evaluting the frequency of a cerain interval of the file.

in general what are the options to find possible duplicates

DVD audio extractor can ripp DVDs in MP3, AC3 and so on.

Would be happy to get the same feature in MC15 - one software for all media files - as anounced from JRiver.

would like to freeze some column when scroling the librarry ( a bit like excel)

now the row title stays on when we scroll the file list,
however when a view have few fields selected to be viewed (like name, path, keyword, event, mod, ...), when i want to see the field mood, i loose the field name
will be good to have an option to feeze the left most field(s), so i can easely correlate with the field that are in the right most

DLNA Feature request - I think really easy, and would solve a really annoying issue I have with a DLNA set top box

Please add a DLNA option that allows me to manipulate the data sent to the DLNA client for the Name tag.

Feature would be:  "Data to send for Name"  with a textbox entry.  The textbox takes standard MC fields,  meaning I could configure it as:  "[Episode] - [Name]"

That would mean that, if this option is set, then MC would not just send the standard contents of Name, but it would automatically manipulate it as configured with this option.

Why?  Because my DLNA set top box always sorts the list of files in alphabetical order.  It is therefore ignoring any Track# or (in my case) Episode value for the sorting.   Adding the above option would allow me to fool the box into sorting my video files in the right order always.

I know mine isn't the only DLNA client with this sorting problem, so this would be a huge help.

(For extra configurability, it would be nice if the option could be applied independently to video, audio or images.  e..g a user might want it for Video, but not for Audio, because his DLNA box might already be sorting Audio in the right order.)

When I am using the DLNA feature in order to stream music stored on my Laptop, connected to WD-TV LIVE, connected to my HiFi, the LAST.FM plugin is not scrobbling the songs played.

Would be nice, if scrobbling works together with DLNA!

A few of my wishes have came true with MC15. That's the first time I can say yes I'm happy with an MC upgrade. However, a lot more can be still accomplished for MC, and some are them are just small add of features.

Control over the images in Theater View front end
Can the user get the ability to change and rotate the images displayed in Theater View background for Audio, Images, Television, etc...? I think it wouldn't be hard to just add an option in the Tools section of Theater View for that. I have tons of HD fan art that I'd love to bring in MC. Having one set of images showing up every time the program is open is not that exciting... especially when the user didn't make the choice for the specific images.

Extend the same control to the "Info" section of Theater View
This function should also be integrated in "Info" and 'Artist Views" sections. Currently, the images for info are being pulled I assume from Google Images which is fine, but there's no user control whatsoever about it and at times depending on the artist the info is being pulled for, all MC is showing are images not related to the artist being played. For most common and popular artists, Google will pull up the appropriate images in most cases. However, for certain artist with general name like Estelle, Well... any picture tagged Estelle shows up. I think it'll be fair to allow us an option to add fan art to the info section and rotate them with the Google images. We could select the balance between local fan art and Google where we could have MC rotate 10 locals fan art of the artist and mix it with the Google results. Heck, fan art is very popular with a lot of other Media Center software, MC can definitely allow us to get on the bandwagon.

Option to change space between covers in Theater View
In Standard View there's an option to set the space between the covers, I'd love to see that function bring over also to Theater View. Standard View with all default settings look awesome on my big screen with no spaced out covers and big font. I want to have the ability to change the covers size in Theater View and decrease the space they have in between them. I don't care much for the big font size, I want to find a way to decrease that too.

Put Performer Information to use in Local Library
Currently there are a few ways to pull biography and albums info in MC or with PM Lyrics plugin and the likes. However, whenever I click on the Google or Wiki links on the upper right side, I feel like disconnected from MC. Automatically the interface becomes something else... like, dude, you are on Wikipedia :-). And I'm thinking, will it be hard to actually have the artists info available on Performer link to MC even when playing local files? For Movies, in MC15, now a user can just hover on a cover and get all the meta info needed by retaining the themes and layout of MC without feeling leaving the program. Is there a way to make MC reads Performer and pull the artist data whenever a file is being played so that when the user tries to get info on that artist, it would send him to the Performer interface where the artists info are available. That can expand to even give the user recommendations for more music of that same artists or other artists that may be similar, kind of like what lastfm does? I mean, I maybe hype about this for nothing but wouldn't that be dope?

What you guys think?

My wishlist for MC15:
- Internal Web page zooming. Would be useful especially in Theater View
- DVB-C support for TV-cards with BDA-drivers
  - DVB subtitles support
  - multiple channels (within the same mux) recording with one tuner.

I don't care about features such as tweeting to the world what I am listening to.  For me there's more basic improvements that can be made.

For example... the  TV LiveTV/Channel/Guide layout not intuitive.  How about a traditional scrolling grid with the channels listed vertically and time slots list horizontally.  It's the only thing holding MC from ultimate status :).

Agreed, and a status bar like TiVo (or any other DVR) in TV viewing mode.  The ability to just FF or RW a show and see the show in fast, faster, fastest speed live, as it's progressing, and hitting play backs up a bit like TiVo.  I know i can skip 30 seconds at a time, but it's not visual, and doesn't always work each time I press it, so I'm never sure how much I have skipped, or if I'm close to TV again, or if I still have 3 more commercials to skip.

and the ability to placeshift TV; to watch Live TV or setup recordings from a client machine that doesn't have a physical tuner installed.  I have 2 in the server, use one of them :)

Hi, firstly MC is certainly, from an audio point of view, the best media player / management application around and certainly worthy of audiophile use. As someone who's business is in high end AV and systems integration, I'm pretty convinced of this.

From my point of view, I would like to see development on never ending 'features' reduce before MC turns into a bloated desktop application.

What would be an upgrade is for attention to be paid to a rewrite or significant extension to the existing API. People have been asking for better remote control functionality from TCP/IP devices for a long time now and not much has happened. Web Remote is not an answer. Far from it. A better API opens up MC to be used with third party control products properly so people can search media libraries and make use of MC's unique functions like multi-zone audio and synchronising of outputs.

In my world, media servers are now common place and the market is shifting to clients using 'PC' products for this purpose rather than waste money on proprietary offerings. However control of these devices by iPhones, UMPC's and with control products from companies like AMX and Crestron is of the utmost importance. Crap like iTunes can be controlled via third party software, as can WMP and Windows Media Center. MC is so poor in this regard as to make the existing API useless.

I really think this is a priority.

You may be missing some pieces.  Please start a thread on this subject.  I think you'll find that what you're proposing is already there.  MC has a web services interface.

Jim,

I have done as you suggested, lets see what happens.

I did think of another function that would be very nice.

1) An auxiliary input feature that lets users plug in another device via analogue or digital to their sound card and have MC process it as a media source.

Assuming its selectable via the remote (or API) then if MC is connected to Power Amps, you could use it as a switcher so that you don't need something else if you have a Satellite or Cable box in addition to your PC.

Theaterview with Dragon Naturally Speaking Incorporated into it

Screw the keyboards, mice, remotes!
i know personally microphones are good enough out there. i use to do video conferencing rooms. you can be on the other side of the room and they will pick up your commands.

hmmm
nice, but would not work well a lot of the time... in my experience, voice commands don't work well when you're listening to moderately loud music, or when you have other people conversing in the room. you would have to turn the music off first, tell people to shut up, and then deliver a voice command. I have a Russian wife, that wouldn't be easy!  :)

Another feature request:

MC DSP to support VST plugins on a per channel basis, so one can route any channel to each VST plugin.

Otherwise, it might be simpler to support Console (http://www.console.jp/en/download.html) as in http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=57917.0

Thanks

When tagging music, have different tagging categories that show set tag fields for each tag category, i.e.

Show Tags for "Jazz"

Show Tags for "Movies"

etc.

I know how improbable this is, given precedent, but if MC 15 can support Zune HD syncing, I will be really, really pleased.  The Zune software has a couple bugs too many, and it's not nearly as comprehensive as MC.  The Zune HD is a great device marred by a flawed software and unrefined firmware.  I have reason to believe that with just a few changes, it would be more than a worthy competitor to iPod--not that it matters, since iPod is pretty much king and will most likely stay that way.  But MC syncing would definitely put the Zune HD in a very beautiful position.

Make it a user option (with appropriate warnings) to have MC delete fields that are not in the file tags upon an update library from tags.

Show 0 values in MC.

In a misguided attempt to be extremely clear I tagged my flac non-compilation albums with the Vorbis comment COMPILATION=0. I later discovered that Squeezebox server mistreats albums tagged that way (it treats null and 0 differently) so I used a tagging software to delete the tags.  I could not use MC for that purpose since MC treats 0 and null values in fields the same way, the 0 does not show up. (I know I could have entered in MC a value in the compilation tags of all my non-compilation flac files and then deleted that value, but that would have triggered some 24 hrs of backup time for my files.) Every time I use MC to change a tag in a flac file that previously had COMPILATION=0 in the file tag the 0 value, which MC remembers but does not show, gets written back to the tag and causes problems with Squeezebox server.

And PLEASE let me use the TORY tag in ID3v.2.3 mp3 files (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=50762.msg361205#msg361205 and http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=56698.msg384787#msg384787). It is really annoying to not being able to get that tag into a MC field.

Might as well put in a request here for this, although I did post to a separate thread.

TV Server functionality. A way that a MC Server can utilise different TV cards (DVB-C, DVB-S/S2, DVB-T etc) so that clients can view a conman EPG of all potential channels to watch live and record.

+1 for all 3 of these, plus add Glynor to the list for server / place shifting.

I may get flamed for this, but here goes...

The network / DLNA stuff is great (even though I don't use it yet) but the way I see it, if the initial software doesn't act / work the way people want it to, then they're not going to purchase it to care about the DLNA stuff.

Most average Joes are still coming to grips with the term HTPC, let alone DLNA.

Kind of like putting the cart before the horse IMO...

Another +1 for the TV server, that would be awesome.  I have many rooms without any kind of TV aerial - it would be great to have a MC server which had, lets say, a Freeview (over-the-air) and Freesat (satellite) adapters and for clients to be able to choose which of those channels they wanted to watch.   I have an English-speaking friend who lives in Germany and can receive both UK and German satellite signals simultaneously, with different tuners - he'd love the ability to serve those as a combined master list of channels for clients to choose from.

I don't think anyone will flame you for your honest opinions - but personally, I don't get what your actual feature suggestion is.  What is missing / what needs to change in order to make MC better in this regard?

Are you saying it's too complex and not point-and-click/wizardy enough for the average user?  If so, I agree - though to be honest I have never thought of MC as a completely mainstream, idiot-friendly app.  I regard it as one up from that - it's enthusiast level.  It can be friendly for a non-techy end user if an enthusiast has set it up for them.  So my Dad uses MC and really enjoys having all his music and video neatly tagged and categorised, and it is a MC DLNA server which my Mum accesses from a DLNA set-top-box.  But of course, I set all this up for them - they wouldn't have had a hope in hell of doing it.  There are other media programs where my Dad might have had a chance of setting it up - Microsoft Media Player/Server for example, where they have spent a huge amount of time making it non-technical.

But personally I have no problem if MC stays at this level.  Dumbing it down to be easy for even the most tech-challenged user is a) hard  b) often associated with a compromise on more complex features, which I would not like, and I think a lot of other MC users would not like.   In fact I wish it were more techy in many ways - I have wanted for years the ability to manipulate my library tags using regular expressions and other advanced string manipulation features  (like Foobar has).

Anyway, I do agree that DLNA needs some work - for one thing, there are a dozen configuration options and it's unclear which does what and why one would set them.   But the network features get better in MC with nearly every release, so I am confident this will all be a lot smoother in future.

My feature request was the TV Server / Client functionality.

The second part was simply opinion that I believe this should have taken precedence over DLNA (or at least been developed in tandem with it) given it has been requested a few times now and we keep getting the same response - Start recording and watch the recording semi-live - which is not the same as the place shifting functionality that is being requested. Is this not essentially a networking function that could have been developed at the same time (taking into account resource restrictions, of course)?

I understand opinion is probably off topic, though, and apologise.

Somehow I´m a bit confused  ? about this thread.
A lot of good ideas are posted here but when and what will be transfered into to MC15?
Why should we all here bring in our ideas and the will be not considered?
If you have a look on this thread http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=58467.0 you find just "changed" or "fixed". Only a few "new" are there and these "new" are not requests and ideas from this thread here.

Would be nice to get a short answer from our admins.

Sorry for beeing so direct. ;D

I would like to have the ability to change the library on the library server from the client. Just like you can with locak libraries. Not beeing able to do this greatly diminishes the use of the library server function for me, and I would suspect other people who regularly change between libraries, and would like to use the library server.

Usage of additional srt subtitles for dvd's exported to hard drive.
E.g. If I add VTS_01_0.english.srt file to the movies video_ts folder this english subtitle file could be used for vts_01 VOBs.

This kind of feature is already included at least in media player classic hc.

I will gladly upgrade if I could enjoy these features:

-Save activate plug-in chains (including each plug-in's settings ) as presets and easily switch between them. This is very useful since I have different EQ, crossfeed, and ARC System settings for my various headphones and speaker sets. The current zone system is not a workable substitute since the different zones do not respond to the same track being played, thus useless for when someone simply wants to A/B different speaker sets or headphones while listening to the same track.

-Configurable amount of seek jumps via hotkey (CTRL+SHIFT+Arrow) instead of locked at 30 seconds forward and 10 seconds backward.

-When I choose to show cover art in the Display window (above the action window), it should stay on only showing the cover art of whatever track is being played. Right now, if I switch to another track, it'll start playing a slideshow of all the cover art, and I don't want it to do that.

-The Clip protection of Overflow Handling in the Volume Leveling is inadequate. It often distorts the audio. You guys really need to take a close look at what's happening there. Sometimes I'd have to set the Adjustment (Fixed) to a lower number to get rid of the clipping distortion. I shouldn't have to do that because Volume Leveling should never clip or distort if I have Clip portection turned on. At the moment I've found +5.0 dB to be a pretty good compromise, but I much prefer to set it higher so I don't have to crank my speaker control up as much (because when other Windows sound plays when I'm listening to music it startles and is annoying).

-I should be able to setup one customized view, and then apply it to absolutely everything that I would ever see in MC. Applying it to a parent folder and then force the child folders, or using the Load a View in Customize Views are both clunky and unnecessary. I simply want to have one unified view setting no matter if I'm in Playing Now, any of the Playlists, or whatever, without having to manually apply them to a bunch of different folders.

-A comprehensive minimized taskbar view--ideally customizable and able to show the name of the artist, track, rating, genre, cover art...etc. I should be able to set what I want it to display, or if the text should scroll or not or I simply mouse-over to see all the information. I should also be able to have all the playback controls, and be able to rate a track in the minimized view.

-Sync with handheld devices doesn't work as well as should. When I sync my Creative Zen 32 GB player, MC would very often reupload tracks that are already on the player and then rename the track with a number in parenthesis at the end like this:

Artist - Track Name.mp3
Artist - Track Name (225).mp3

It should catch duplicate track more accurately. I now have a ton of duplicate tracks on my player and it's a pain in the ass to hunt them all down to delete them. Very unhappy about this.

These are just some off the top of my head. I'm not even going to mention that I have NEVER, EVER gotten MC14 to play any video correctly since I owned it. Doesn't matter if it's a DVD, avi, mov, flv, mp4, or whatever. NOT A SINGLE video can be played in MC14--it always freezes and crashes. I've tried this on 3 different computers now--one is a Vista 64-bit, one is XP 32-bit, and one is a Win7 64-bit.  I never use MC for images either since it's so basic that I could do far more with free image browers/managers/editors like XnView.

Hi Lunatique,

I understand specially the comments you made for the video stuff.

I had similar behaviours for videos, but when I turned off the video option for DVD's "Use ffdshow for video decoder for post processing" it works pretty good.

In general I agree that the development in MC for vidoes is poor and it seems, that the developing folks are more focused in "new" stuff, than in finishing the features they already created.

I know by my own experiences, that it is not always easy to treat with the option "new features" or feature stable versions. But I really would like to make a hint for the future:

For further development of the programm, it would be a nice idea if the crowd out there would be able to vote for some features they like and the developing team would realize these features. This would give J.R. the option to focus on "new" stuff for selling the product and the people which already purchased the program, beeing heard by their wishes.

I don't want to be misunderstood. MC is a affordable program for the features they offer. I know that everybody at J.R. is doing a great job in developing a program like MC. I understand your passion and efforts in the development team, but please understand us users as well. Some of us are having a longer past with MC and some maybe not more willing to spent much more time in trying things.
Thanks

Reiner

There's no justification for this statement. While there's always room for improvement, I'm unaware of any software I'd rather use—even if just for video.

and it seems, that the developing folks are more focused in "new" stuff, than in finishing the features they already created.

For the kind of development that goes on here, this criticism can always be made by those who are not satisfied with an existing feature. But the comment is purely negative and essentially useless. Without a long history of a (appropriate, I'd say) focus on "new" stuff, most of the "old" stuff wouldn't exist. If the developers wasted time waiting for the dust to settle on one thing before moving on to the next, they'd never get anything done. It's more effective for them to do their best with a new feature, and then move on. They can and do revisit, refine and update features. We all have our list of things we wish they would revisit sooner than later, but they seem to get around to most of them—eventually.

I thought as long as I didn't spell anything out and used hypens to replace alphabets, it's acceptable. But I guess as long as people can guess the words then it is profanity, just spelled differently.  :D But I apologize--I should know better. I'm one of the moderators at one of the largest CG portals on the planet, and we do allow changed spellings of profanity there so I assumed it's ok here too.

I'll investigate the video settings further and see if it changes anything. But it's very strange that on 3 different computers and OS's it doesn't work.

Try uninstalling an old MC versions.  Also, DirectShow filters can conflict with each other.  There are solutions for uninstalling old filters.

Win7 added some filters that old versions of MC may try to load but cannot use.  MC15 should solve that.

You might start a thread and ask for help from users like jmone, glynor, fitbrit, and others.  If you uncover a problem, we'll fix it.

I've been working on an ASP.Net project to write my own custom JRiver interface using MCWS, so far I can:

List zones and change as necessary
Retrieve Playing Now playlist
Skip to any track in above playlist
Retrieve current playing track info and album art
Play/Pause/Next/Previous/Vol+/Vol-
Search Library
Play track from search results

Additional MCWS commands that would enable me to develop a complete web interface:

Get All Playlists
Create Playlist
Add to Playlist
Return List of all track id's (Search for all does not return ID, I would use this to index the tracks in a back end db to enable quicker searching)
Sync Zones (2 or more)
Unsync Zones
Search Albums (current search returns all tracks)
Search Artists (as above)
Wildcard in Search Functions (or does this exist already??? I'm using "Query=([Album]=[words]")

Do you have any plans to expose any of the DLNA functions through MCSW?

Once complete I'm happy to share this interface with a few users and get some feedback and ideas to improve.

Starting to put together a "one stop" web media control interface which will interface with VLC, some home automation devices (e.g. X10), use the IR Blaster to control Sky Boxes etc, control the heating and also control the media throughout the home.

Lots of interfaces/tools available that can do most of these things individually but not one that can do it all from a single interface...for example have a "Party Mode" that will dim the lights, turn the TV off and play a playlist all from the press of a button...will be a long project but having just finished a self build this is my next project to finish off the house :)

Hope this helps

Locked views:

1. It should not be possible to close a tab in a locked view. Many times I have closed a tab in a locked view when I wanted to close a browser window/tab in another view, which means that I have to unlock the view and add that tab again and then lock the view.

2. It could be considered to remove the new tab tab in locked views because there is not much one can do with the start window. A smarter approach would be the following: If a start window is active, send commands to that window even if is in a locked view. If this approach is chosen, then perhaps it should be possible after all to also close tabs in locked views.

An easier way to lock and unlock views would be nice, but I think this has already been requested.

I love the movie feature where you can lookup info on Wikipedia for a movie and import it easily with a right click.
My media library is now dominated by TV Series of various types. Is it possible to allow this sort of functionality for TV show series.
It would be fantastic. Looking at TVDB.com it should be easy to do and free ?
Anyway this would be my number 1 request, I'm sure others would agree.

Since getting JRiver to just do Audio, it has been hijacked by the rest of the family and now gets predominantly used for movies, tv, etc ...
So this feature would be great and stop the troops getting restless :)
Thanks.

I don't know this has been requested but I imagine could be an easy feature to implement.

We use a shared library, where the first MC to open the library gets full rights and others will get read only rights, we get the screen message about read only mode.

What I would like to see is either:

1) The words "read only mode" follow the library name onscreen to indicate to the user that this library is opened in this mode and that playlist and tagging changes will be lost if performed.

2) A Read Only mode skin selection so we could chose which normal mode skin is used based on if the library was opened in read only mode.  Users in the house could tell what mode they are in based on which skin MC was "wearing."

Is there a way to check your library rights status while a library is open without closing MC (or the library) and reopening?

Thanks for the best piece of software on my computer!

This annoys me too, and you also jump away from the current track if you search, and clear the search again you start at the beginning of the playlist.

When I am using the DLNA feature in order to stream music stored on my Laptop, connected to WD-TV LIVE, connected to my HiFi, the LAST.FM plugin is not scrobbling the songs played.

Would be nice, if scrobbling works together with DLNA!

I'm keen to have the DLNA Media Server and the Last.FM scrobbler plugin connected as well. I use my PS3 and iPad to connect to MC15's DLNA and it would be nice if everything i listened to was being uploaded to last.FM

I seem to remember that that they were actually connected together in MC14 (back when the Media Server plugin was called DLNA Server (or similar))

Another feature i'd really like to see would be a cloud service which exposes my library to the Internet so that i have access to all my music when i'm away from home. Something similar to Orb.com

NOTE: I realise that the Library Server does something similar, but with that, both clients need to be running the same version of MC15. I'm talking about playing my files on my home files on iPad or WinMobile phone when away from home.

Get All Playlists
Play a playlist
Play (Shuffled) a playlist

I am also toying with adding a toggle menu item to stream the audio to the device for headphone/portable speakers.

What are my chances of these getting added to the MCWS library?

Jump On Continuous Playback

In Theater View, I would like to be able to choose a "preferred" display (Last View, Display View, Standard View, ...) for each kind of media in a way that, in a continuous playback session of mixed media types, the views would automatically switch to the desired profile. Of course this option would have a "checkbox" to activate/disactivate - For example, I would disactivate when doing library management tasks, and then activate again in an audio and music videos session.

This feature/option could also be extended to the other views.

Would this be interesting for anyone else?  ;)

Thank You

VST host functionality to allow control of channel routing of multiple instances of VST plugins.

The main application of this is for active speakers. So that a convolver plugin can take a stereo input and can output 6 channels (for 3 way).

For 5.1 or 7.1 this process is repeated for muliple instances of the convolver plugin.

Similarly, control over channel routing would allow for multiple subwoofers to be fed the same signal.

When using “Fill Properties From Filename” I would like the ability to save the naming conventions I use.
With this possible I would no longer need to be constantly opening text files to copy and paste from them. I currently do this every time I switch between tagging IfO’s, AVI’s, and Photos.

Please start a thread and provide some details.  Read the DirectShow article in the wiki and see the comments about Haali and FFDshow Taskbar notification.  Turn them off.  CoreAVC, too.

I would like to see embedded lyrics panel that fits MC window that retrieves its data from a number of lyrics DB sources.
Like the one Songbird has called LyricMaster, just to show an example of what im talking about:
See screenshot http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon-images/1741/lm_screen01_large.png?1219716579

Personally,I think Songbird is low featured software compared to Media Center and it needs further development.  But still, the idea of this kind of addon could be very useful

Theater View
I can't see the vertical scroll bar on the right side of the screen when there are a lot of selections (like Artists, or Albums) when it is displayed on big-screen TVs... it is visible on the computer (laptop) screen fine, but the contrast (dark gray on dark gray and black) isn't quite enough to be visible when sitting 8 feet from a 73" diagonal screen. The arrows and the bar itself need a little more contrast so they can be seen a little more easily. It's not a calibration issue either... I do professional video calibration and the TV is essentially "perfect" calibration-wise. I'm not asking for anything radical, just enough of a bump in the dark gray areas of the scroll-bar/scroll arrows to make them a little more visible without being obnoxious.  I'm not using "computer video" (dSub-15 VGA-style connector), I'm usin HDMI out from the laptop to the home theater processor. Black level is set correctly... using the alternative setting for black level just makes black turn gray... which is un-helpful (-B

I can see the "dimmed" theater view choices when an album is playing (back, info, list, display view, stop, pause, precvious, etc.) with no problem. But that scroll bar is so dark, it is really difficult to see.

Action Window
If "Rip Disc" is selected here, it leads you into an unreliable workflow. You need to use Rip Disc up by the tab view (Standard View) after inserting a disc in an optical drive and selecting the optical drive's letter to get into a reasonably reliable/repeatable Rip mode.
The Rip Disc choice could be deleted from the Action Window so an unreliable workflow can't be started from there.

An option to import from your Last.fm account the play count and last played Last.fm data into the corresponding automatic MC fields, preferably a recurring automatic import.

Argument: MC is not the only software/device used to play music.

About a month ago I posted a request for the ability to save the naming conventions I use while using “Fill Properties From Filename”. Apparently this has existed since the beginning, but for some reason I just never noticed. Thank you for creating my requested feature years in advance. That’s good work.

When the link feature (for looking up something on a website) is used, do not shift focus (but of course display the web page) so that the tag action window still shows the tags of the file(s) that were selected/in focus before the link was invoked. That way it would be easy to use the information on the resulting web page to adjust the tags. As it is now I have to switch back and select the files again and then switch back to the web page.

I would love to see AMIP  Support, Which is already supported by Winamp, iTunes, QMP (QCD), foobar2000.

I use Irc Daily with Mirc for my job and would love to be able to show off song info!!!!!

Pass "now playing" song details to almost any application (IRC clients: mIRC, jIRCii, Bersirc; IM clients: Miranda, Trillian, MSN Messenger; E-mail clients: The Bat!, Outlook, Thunderbird; Web browsers, blogging tools, windows clipboard and so on)

Would take care of the Now playing Problem on pretty much every IM Application.

Also would like to be able to set a list for cover art to look for in the same directory as the files. Ie. folder.jpg, cover.jpg, cover.png, folder.png

+1 and for it to save the lyrics to the audio file so next time you play the file it doesn't need to redownload

I'd like to make a few features request here.

1. For WASAPI Event Style, please add 5 miliseconds option before lowest possible ones. For high performance PCI card, it could go even lower than buffer size or CPU speed to be handled. For example, RME HDSP AES-32 can play 24/192 fine at minimum but has occasional spike at 44.1/48 because buffer size couldn't be lower than 32. Adding this would be highly appreciated for greater sound I can get stable performance. 10 miliseconds is hardly bearable.

2. Please add upsampling to 2 times or 4 times mode so 44.1 and 48 base won't be mixed. 2 times won't upsample 176.4/192 and 4 times won't upsample 88.2/96.

Hope it's not too much to ask for. Thank you.

I guess it's time to bring these up again:

1. Ability to seek correctly in mounted iso files (both the rewind and fast forward skip ahead an hour or more)
2. Ability to reorder and clear playing now list when playing "there" in conjunction with a library server
3. Automatic wikipedia lookups on video import
4. Automatic replacement Name/Title field of movie after performing a wikipedia lookup
5. Automatic TV episode lookups for tag info

What I'd like to be able to is to use the export-options available when exporting a SINGLE playlist also when exporting ALL playlists. When exporting a single playlist, few mouse-clicks do everything right for me. But having no options on "Export All Playlists", the results don't work.

Whether to have this as options on command "Export All Playlists", or customizable somewhere in setup-options ... I DON'T CARE  ;)

In Tools > Options > Library & Folders > Manage Library Fields > Track # > Data, beeing able to choose the "Store in file tags (when possible)"-option (turn off) also for tool version and tool name, as I don't like them beeing written to tags.

I vote for this feature as well. I don't see the point of these tags and it is just "messy". It is particularly annoying when these tags are added and I did not even edit any tags, for example "Quick Find in File / Cover Art Directory". I do not embed art in my flac files, yet these tags get added to the files. Then when I do an incremental backup, those files have to get backed up.

Sickbeard media info integration. It can already output to WDTV, MediaBrowser, PS3, and XBMC metadata, however JRiver uses its own sidecar format that is unsupported.

not sure if i mentioned this before (If so I apologize)  but we ran into it again tonight...

Gf wanted to watch new movie i told her i had. she searched for 20 minutes on htpc. and then asked for my help. Here i forgot to exit out of theaterview and goto file\library\load library and refresh the htpc client server connection. So basically the new imported files were not showing up.

Anyway to make htpc call home to server once a day everyday at say noon? or 7 pm, whenever? that way the library will always be up to date and my family doesnt have to exit out of theaterview?

Thanks for this consideration.

Matt can you believe i never knew this existed?
I been batting my head for months having to exit out of theaterview, reconnect go back in.

I'm ignorant when it comes to wiki's. I've now signed in, checked my settings. out of curiosity Is it possible to get notified everytime someone adds something(ANYTHING) to the wiki? so i can read up on new features and get to learn things better?
In new releases you guys mention things that are new or that i've never heard of, but i don't know what the new feature does, or how to get it to work or where to find it.

I Love reading, and learning, its just i need to know the stuff is there.

Thanks so much for this link (fix) This will be so nice!

Matt, Anyone - I've followed Matt's instructions from the wiki -
Quote
To enable automatic sync, on the client enable Options > Media Network > Library Server Client > Automatically sync changes made on server back to client.

On server i setup authentication, on HTPC i connected to server put in authentication info and it connected. then i went to Media Network > Library Server Client on HTPC> and the only thing under library server client is automatically sync changes made on client back to server, which is unticked, play local file if one matches library server - ticked, show playback zones from server on the client - ticked, audio conversion, image conversion, and video conversion.

How do i get jriver to show me the option for Automatically sync changes made on server back to client, it's no there? If you guys want a screen shot let me know.

Also just an FYI i also went to other pc's in the house that are using jriver and none of them show me

When using 'Rename, Move & Copy Files' could it also copy cover art to the new directory.  Bit of a pain moving an album and losing the cover art...

Allow us to specify what playlist is used to display recently imported files.

I have a workflow of multiple smartlists for recently imported files.  After I import files I have to manually select the first workflow by drilling down my Playlists tree.  The default 'recently imported' playlist I never use.  Would be great if I could tell MC which playlist to jump to after files are manually imported.

An option to make sidecar files hidden.  Actually, I'm not sure why this isn't the default.  One can easily enable or disable "Show Hidden Files" under folder options in Windows if you want to look at them.  I have confirmed that MC doesn't seem to have any issues if the sidecar files are hidden.  This would save me the extra step of having to manually make the sidecar file hidden.

What's about a new feature to perform live mixes. :)
I ask this request some versions ago.

Cues and looping are basic controls which offer a better experience when deejing.
BPM detection and estimation (already done I guess) and the parallel waveform displays are a bonus in a module/function like that.

The best one: (approaching the new Play Doctor function) Automatic crossfading with Auto DJ feature.

* A way to build cache ("right clic on group of songs, > cache > build cache" could be an option) without have to set up a handheld devide or stream

* Improve Export playlist to itunes feature to allow lossless files (automatic on-the-fly convertions to lossy in order to export to itunes)

* Automatic MediaSubType field, based on folder (eg. if a video file is on "Movies" folder, MediaSubType changes to "Movies", etc)

* Improve Sync Library to be a Real Library Sync, seems like a forgotten feature  :(

I would like to see an ability implemented to allow MC to group a set of defined audio files into a "virtual single file."  I have many CDs which have multiple tracks for a single song, and these tracks should ALWAYS be played together.  As it is now, if I click on one track it only plays part of the song, and if I have all three tracks in a play list and choose randomize it plays the pieces of the song separately.

Wow ! I always dreamed of that, but for a very little number of songs, so did not dare to bother you :) Would be great to also implement it in your future android player ;) (I doubt anything like that could become standard and handled by any other player...)

Title: Request for function to correct "DC offset" during ripping
Post by: ricky_r on June 19, 2011, 04:00:22 am
I would like to ask for a feature that corrects the DC offset of a music file during the CD ripping process before saving the file.
That is something that I currently use Wavelab for. Which creates a lot of extra work. -> Open each file in wavelab. Choose function to correct DC offset. Save file again.
As this function has no parameters to set, it could be integrated as a flag option in the encoding settings dialog.
