Waow, thanks!
Can't wait to test it!
A native iOS remote app was really a missing thing.

Hi Michael,
Any particular reason you required ios 4?

Hi Michael,
Any particular reason you required ios 4?

The Apps are developed in Flash Builder (with Air 2.7) which requires iOS 4 or higher.

Hi,
I really like your app.
However, I have a bug: the lines under Playing Now are not shown correctly.
Song title is correct and goes with cover but artist matches the upper song.
The following picture shows the problem (eg "Intro" is by M83):
(http://img804.imageshack.us/img804/6453/myriver.th.png) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/804/myriver.png/)

I'd like to make a feature request: filter under Playing Now.

Thanks,

Sheugel

So this works through upnp as a controlpoint just like plugplayer but dedicted to the use with jrmc?
From the screenshots the interface looks much more clean and elegant then plugplayer.
Does it show our own view schemes or are the menus preset?

Yes it works as a remote control like plugplayer, but it can not play content on the device.

It will show you the view schemes you have customized under media network (except the home screen which is fixed)

Very nice app, thank you!  Looking for an alternative to PlugPlayer, which works well but has an idiosynchratic way of selecting items.

A few suggestions...

1. Instead of the Plus button to select an item, can this be done by a simple press on the item thumbnail itself. A double tap opens the folder but a single tap/hold pops up the Add menu whether it's a folder or a node item.

2. Instead of displaying items in a list with a lot of wasted space to the right, can you display slightly larger thumbnails in a grid (say 4 or 5 across)? I know you might run into problems with the length of the caption, but maybe the font size can be reduced if the text is too large to fit underneath the thumbnail.  Only display items in a list if the items are individual audio nodes (i.e. tracks) - the grid thumbnail display would be ideal for folders/containers and for photo and video items.  (I'm using the iPad version)

3. In Now Playing, can we have a slider control to show the current playback position and for seeking?

Totally agree on the PlugPlayer select method.

3 very good suggestions, I'll try to investigate the possibility of implementing them in a future release.

Before I spend $$ on this, does it work for pushing content to a UPNP device like the WDTV?  I don't want to control what MC is playing on the machine it is installed on, I want to control it playing to my WDTV.
Title: Re: My River - Media Center Remote (for iPhone, iPod Touch & iPad)
Post by: csimon on October 23, 2011, 11:16:16 am
Yes, it does, but then again it doesn't! I have a WDTV myself and have always used PlugPlayer to control it.

However MyRiver does not appear to be a UPnP/DLNA Control Point - it is indeed a remote control for MC. But remember that MC itself is a DLNA controller, this is why MyRiver requires DLNA switched on.  The WDTV, as with any other DLNA device, appears as a Zone in MC and this is what MyRiver sees, you can select whatever Zone you want to push music to (the local PC that MC is runmning on appears as Here).  MyRiver does indeed control MC but MC itself is controlling the WDTV via DLNA.

MyRiver appears to connect to MC via the web service in the same way as Gizmo, Webremote and Webplay and works in the same way as these interfaces. It does not connect via DLNA.

Thanks.  That is what I was asking, just not in the technically correct way.

How easy is it to control what zone is being played to with My River?  Right now we are using the built in web page access to select the zone and start the playback.  Not really 'wife friendly' if the zone resets to 'play here' instead of 'play to WDLXTV'.

In the main menu there is a Zone selection so you can easily select which zone you want at the start of each session. Yu can then go back and change the zone if you want.

Thanks, going to pick up a copy.

Feature Request:  Ability to set zone and have it 'stick' across sessions/reboots/etc. until changed (or at least until that is no longer a valid zone in MC).

It is already doing so in the current version, the selected zone is saved on the device.

Great App! Works like a charm.  I can't believe I've wasted so much money on Bitremote - hopefully you'll commit to continually developing this app and maybe in the future it will get a little faster loading a larger collection.  Keep up the good work.

Sincerely,
A Happy Customer  ;)

The Apps are developed in Flash Builder (with Air 2.7) which requires iOS 4 or higher.

Michael

I have an Ipod touch (V.2) with iOS 4.x so the OS requirement is met
but why does it need the Ipod touch (V.3) ??
Can this be changed?

I'm a little disappointed realizing this after buying but of course it's my fault for not
reading properly.

I'm sorry but I can't do anything about it, Flash Builder (with Air 2.7) has these requirements.
The requirements are listed here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/my-river/id467965691?mt=8 (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/my-river/id467965691?mt=8)

I would recommend you to claim a refund from Apple by using this tutorial:
How to get a refund for an iPhone App (http://osxdaily.com/2010/11/13/iphone-app-refund/)
If it fails do not hesitate to send me an email, then we find another solution for your wrong purchase.

Is it a shuffle of playing now or add as shuffled, or both?

If your looking for inspiration take a look at ipeng for iphone and ipad for controlling the squeezebox devices.
They are both very well done. Especially the iphone version.

Does My River control MC zones?  Didn't see that in the screenshots.  I'm trying to decide between Android vs. iOS for my next phone, and MC control is a major deciding factor.  Thanks for creating this app!

WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

Very nice start. Thanks a ton!

I just bought your app and successfully paired with MC.  So far so good!   Buying the iPad version now.

Any chance you can implement the "jump letters" down the right side of the screen at some point?

I like the filter a bunch.  nice touch.

Thanks again.

I will play with the iPad version tonight.

i will put together something more comprehensive but I noticed a bug with the filter.  If you use the "hide keyboard" function on the iPad when typing in the filter, the filtered list disappears.

Hitting "done" works as it should

Would it be possible to add a few more options after the "double-tap"?

How about
"Play Shuffled"
"Play with Play Doctor"
??

Also, a "Playing Now" Button at the top of the screen, available at all times, would be nice.

Thanks!

This is looking really great Svend!

I am having trouble with auto rotate on my ipad.  It gets stuck in whatever orientation I first open My River in.  Playing now is always in Portrait? You may have discussed this before.

I second the request for playing now button always visible at the top.

Great work!

Michael,

Thanks for the quick response.  I can reproduce in the following fashion:
- In landscape open "Artists"
- Start typing "JOHN" in the filter.  As you type the backround starts populating.
- Then Hide the Keyboard before hitting "DONE"

thx!
-p

EDIT!!!!! - Ok I figured out exactly when it happens.  It erases the populating list if you hit the Hide Keyboard WHILE there is an auto-correct suggestion open in the filter field.  E.G. type "J-O-H" and when it shows "John" as an autofill/correction hide the keyboard.

Obviously this only applies to the iPhone app.

BUT I would REALLY like other buttons at the top of the iPad (and iPhone) Apps.

1) Artists
2) Albums
3) Playlists

Basically have the items in the "Home" screen available elsewhere as a button.   Is that possible?  It would have the same function as the buttons at the bottom of Apple's Remote app.

Thanks again Michael.

Loving gapless replay FINALLY with J River and a control point that isnt WebRemote.

Thanks Michael.  It is not a deal breaker of course.  But I figured you might want to correct it if you knew about it.  The jump letters of course would basically make the filter redundant for me.  But I can see people using both.

I am interested in MyRiver and the essential feature I need is to be able to change and see the playing zone at the "playing" screen. Is it possible? As I only see a way to change it in the settings page and it would be unfriendly to always go to the settings screen to change/see the zones.

If this feature is not available yet, will it be available in the next version?

With ipeng for iphone you can swipe right from playing now to select players and left for the playlist. Maybe that could be a way to implement zones more accessible also in my river.

I'm just being greedy now Michael, but something I would like is to view the "bit rate" and "sample rate" in the Playing Now. Could be just another line with the title.

Put the App through its paces last night and loved it.  This is what J River has been lacking for a long time.

Requirements: Compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad. Requires iOS 4.0 or later.

As long as she is running iOS 4.0 or higher on her iPhone, there should be no problem.
Unfortunately My River does not work on a Mac mini.

Found a way to get them. Thanks a lot for the nice apps!!

You can add the web radio station to a playlist and access it from My River.

Are you running My River for iPad (http://www.4bay.dk/iPadPromo.png) (with split screen) or just My River (http://www.4bay.dk/iPhonePromo.png) (on your iPad)?
There has been some issues with landscape/portrait in playing now in the My River (http://www.4bay.dk/iPhonePromo.png) version, because it is locked in portrait.
I'm going to release a update very soon with a fix for that.

Thanks,
Michael

Michael,

I have had more time to play with both apps.  Once again great job.

I mentioned earlier the bug with the Filter auto-correct.  It is actually a little different than I described.

Yes the "hide keyboard" while "auto-correct" is suggesting, does initiate the bug.  But I noticed that ANY accepted auto-correct activity deletes the filter list.

Here are my feature wishes and logistical suggestions
- Jump Letters down the right side in all relevant views.
- Remove "Home Screen" and move everything to buttons at the top or bottom of the screen.  This is most important for "Playing Now" on the iPhone version.  It is tough navigating to Playing Now.
- Option for "No thumbnails" when in list mode
- Option for "No thumbnails" when in Playlist
- Shuffle option for both Current Playlist (Shuffle current playlist) and for "Play" (Play as Shuffled)
- Biography screen (from Wiki or LastFM) as with eLyric app.  Very nice feature.
- More "Double Tap" Play options (similar to options in MC)
- Schedule an appointment with the Play Doctor
- Edit Current Playlist
- Maybe some more info on the Playing Now screen, e.g. Year, Genre etc...  Perhaps user configurable tag fields like in Theater View's "Playing Now>Info"
- Maybe when going from a filter into an artist view, when you use the "Back Button" it returns you to the filter?  Now it sends you back to the beginning of the unfiltered list.

Thanks again Michael.  Great work

Cheers,
Patrick

Just my comments on your suggestions!

- Jump Letters down the right side in all relevant views.

I think this can be quite difficult to achieve, as MyRiver has no way of knowing whether the particular view is sorted alphabetically.  Because of MC's excellent customisation facilities, you can do sensible things like sorting albums by year.  Or sorting artists or albums by a specific Sort tag while the original tags remain untouched.

PlugPlayer shows jump letters but this is one of my gripes with it in that it makes the index possible by forcing an alphabetical re-ordering of the items, ignoring the order in which they are returned from the server, which completely mangles my carefully-crafted sorting!

Quote
More "Double Tap" Play options (similar to options in MC)

But make the common ones (Play now, Append to Queue etc) appear at the top of the list separated by a line or soemthing from the rest, so that the ease of use of the things you are most likely to do doesn't get compromised.

csimon,

I hear you on the jump letters in your particular situation, especially once you drill down past the artist level.  You might like to sort albums by year etc...

But aren't all "Artist" views alphabetized?  This is the only view I would really like the jump letters.  I like to be able to "scroll" around my artist list looking for things that strike my fancy.  That said, my John Zorn album view (over 150) could use jump letters.

And I agree on the double tap options re: priority.  Maybe not add ALL of the options from MC.  I would like to see at least:
- Play Now
- Add (to Queue)
- Add (as Next)
- Play as Shuffled
- Play with Play Doctor

But aren't all "Artist" views alphabetized?

Hmm, I guess they are.  Even in my situation, where I sort by a Sort Artist, that tag has to be supplied as the displayed artist anyway as even MC doesn't allow sorting by an arbitrary tag, so what is displayed in the list is indeed alphabetical. I can't think off-hand of any situation where Artist views would not be alphabetical. It's only if MC had an option to remove A and The etc for sorting purposes or if it could work out what the surname was, that could cause the displayed name to be different from the sorting order.

But any other view is difficult to say. Any other level, including photos and videos, could be sorted by date or by track number.

Exactly.... in MC you can sort your view as you like, and not necessarily alphabetically.
So if you want to achieve the Jump Letter thing you have to bypass MC's sorting.
In addition the coding is not easy :-[

You can create a alphabetically grouped view in MC see here (http://www.4bay.dk/GettingStarted.htm#Group)

Next version will have the shuffle option, and a shuffle playing now.... there is no API for Play Doctor :'(

In the next (iPhone) version you can navigate to Playing Now with a double tap on the title-bar from all views.

There will be a Clear playing now, apart from that, there is no easy way of editing the current playlist :'(

Quote
- Maybe some more info on the Playing Now screen, e.g. Year, Genre etc...  Perhaps user configurable tag fields like in Theater View's "Playing Now>Info"
In next version there will be a show tag option, which will list all tags for the current track, and make it possible to do a search on a particular tag.

Thanks,
Michael

It is already doing so in the current version, the selected zone is saved on the device.

Not working on my Wife's iPhone 4 (version that was current on 10/23).  Always resets to 'Here' instead of staying at the previously chosen 'WDLXTV' between uses.

Just updated to 1.1, will see if it works now.

Is the cover art distortion a MC issue or a My River issue?  All cover art is being squashed down to a square instead of staying in the original aspect ratio.  Looks really stupid when using for movies.

Michael,

Thanks a ton for the responses.  Why so many tears!!!??  Your app is f-ing MONEY!!!!!!!!

I totally hear you on the jump letters in most locations.  But if I may beg for jump letters in artist view, please hear my plea.

The biggest list most of us handle is our Artist list.  Sure, many may have some pretty big playlists and album lists that they may like to sort in creative ways.  But the artist list is always alphabetized as far as I can tell.  It would be handy as scrolling the big list or grid of artists is pretty slow and jerky.  In fact this is only one of two things that can potentially crash the app on my iPad.

If the jump letters aren't possible in Artist view, would it be possible to have a slider?  Or even jump buttons that simply move you a specific distance down the list, rather than tying them to actual letters?  Anything to help navigate a few thousand artist thumbnails would be fantastic.

I played a bunch last night with both iPhone and iPad apps.  Everything working really, really well.

The only buggie type things I am running into:
- A large fast swipe in the artist (thumb view) can crash the app.
- Sometimes if playback is initiated within MC itself, if the app is already running it wont see MC.

Thanks again Michael.  Hip Hip Hooray!

Ios list controls can handle large lists with either the a-z bar but also a dotted bar if the list is not alphabetical sorted to jump fast within the list.

I think this just refers to the user interface elements that are available to the programmer.  In other words Control Mechanisms that iOS makes available to allow interaction with Lists, like scroll bars, jump letters etc.

My River is developed in Flash Builder, and it is missing some UI components, compared to Xcode (on Mac).
In Xcode it is easy to make a jump letter indexed list because it is more or less built in. In Flash builder you have to make it from scratch >:(

Anyway I have not given up on the Jump Letter list yet, but it will not be in the next release ;)

Thanks Michael.  It is not a deal breaker of course.  But I figured you might want to correct it if you knew about it.  The jump letters of course would basically make the filter redundant for me.  But I can see people using both.

3 Cheers to you!

I would like the jump letters on the left hand side to speed up navigation through 500+ artists etc....

Great app all the same. Keep up the development please.

I will do my best to get the jump letters implemented.

Until then you could try to setup grouping (http://www.4bay.dk/GettingStarted.htm#Group) in MC it makes navigation in My River easier.

I don't think it is possible to link zones in MC's API :-\

In next release you can change zone from Playing Now (left tap on cover).

Hello Michael,

Thanks for the update of MyRiver, keep up the good work !!
Shuffled play works fine, only complaints I have is that the software is somewhat slow on my iPad compared to other remote programs.
Is it something I need to change in the settings to speed it up?

Kind regards, Piet

If you feel that it is slow when you browse through large collections you should consider to setup grouping (http://www.4bay.dk/GettingStarted.htm#Group) in MC it makes navigation in My River faster.

The only thing that is a little too slow is scrolling through my artist list (2000+).  I am sure that your alphabetical list might help.  I will give it a shot but I do not want to use it long term.  (Still want jump letters in Artist)  I dont like the idea of having to go back to pick another letter when browsing around.

New build is working wonderfully. The new shuffle options are money.
Double tap title bar for "Playing Now" is a little strange but works well.
Tag info page is a nice feature.

I still vote for persistent "artist", "playing now" and maybe "playlists" or "zones" at the top of the screen alongside the "home" button.

Also, wondering if persistent control buttons at the bottom would be a good idea.  This would allow for track changes, pause etc, while browsing.

Lastly, would it be possible to add a "Bio" page or something from LastFM?

Cheers!
Patrick

+1 on the please add Rating capability. It won't take up much space at all. Take a look at iPeng.

As far as scrolling through lists, I have to agree that it's slow. Wouldn't adding the ability of "do not show cover art thumbnails on lists" speed this up considerably?

Hello everybody,

I am new to JRiver and this forum, in fact, I just purchased it this evening together with the "My River" DNLA iPhone Controller. My audio system is gravitating around a self-built WHS Server streaming into a PS Audio PerfectWave DAC. In the past I evaluated occasionally the DNLA capabilities of JRiver, using so just a small part of its functionality, but with the discovery of the "My River" Controller I took the decision to go with this solution.

However, I am just getting into difficulties, because, despite of the fact that I have the MC running in streaming mode and the app installed, the app doesn't recognize the player or the server. iIhave no clue how to set it up (host, port, Zone) and especially what is the 'link' here to the MC configuration.

Therefore my question:
Is there a link to a knowledge base on how to konfigure "My river" ?

Many thanks in advance!

The host address is your PC's IP address (where MC is running). How To get IP Address (http://www.home-network-help.com/check-ip.html)

Thanks Michael!

I managed to connect to the server and it streams now to my DAC but I am not sure where does J River MC know the DAC as a renderer; it is because it is the only one ?  The My River controller doesn't seem to know about 'renderers', is this correct (in the case that there might be more than one) ? So what is the 'renderer logic' behind ?

Also at this opportunity, what about 'gapeless' play ?

many thanks!  i will take a deep dive in the next days at the configuration possibilities for the music collection....

My River isn't a DLNA Controller, it's simply a remote control for MC, like you were sitting at the MC computer and operating it from there. It is MC itself that knows about renderers, they show up as Zones within MC and it is these that are reflected in My River.

My River isn't instructing a Renderer to retrieve media from a Server. It is sending remote control messages to MC to do the controlling itself.

It is like Gizmo.

But note that gapless play will only work when MC itself is rendering the audio (i.e. your Zone in My River has to be "Here"), it cannot (yet) be done via DLNA.

Hello,

Great APP, just what we were looking for. As always with a new release people have wannahaves and must haves;

Must have; when we push the loadspeaker symbol (Playing Now) the system goes to 100% or 0% volume. 0% no problem, but 100% with one push > hartattack, windows broken....so I would suggest 10% incremental up and 20% for down. At this screen but also on the home screen the "buttons" may be bigger, the Ipad has plenty of room. Same goes for the top navigation bar.

Wannahave; integration of mouse control and more buttons (function keys) like "Mobile Mouse" APP, this will make it easy to edit tags. And yes the Zone setting in "Settings" would be better to have them show up on the homescreen or as a start screen before you go into Audio, Video....

And nice to have it available on Phone but what about android?

Anyway: I'm Lovin' It

BayensF,

Strange.....  Regarding your first point, tapping the "Playing Now" button does not change my volume in any fashion.  Do you mean that when in the "Playing Now" screen and you touch the volume slider symbols it maximizes or mutes playback?  If so it is working correctly.  It is a volume slider.  The "symbols" for up and down do not function as steps, i.e. it does not behave like WebRemote's volume.

On the second point.... Zones are always available from both "Playing Now" (tap left side of screen) or "Home".  Also I dont see a need for "mouse control" here or tagging.  Most will likely use this in a headless scenario.  If it were feasible to edit tags from the "Tags" page (tap right side of screen in Playing Now) I wouldn't be opposed to its existence.

Lastly, no need for an Android version as there is Gizmo for that platform.

Let's not try to turn My River into a Swiss army knife.  Much better to have a dedicated app that does one thing perfectly, than ten things adequately.

2 cents,
Patrick

You're right..... maybe I should implement a 10% incremental up.

Sounds like you are using My River (http://www.4bay.dk/MyRiver.htm), which runs fine on a iPad (but the UI is not optimized for it).....?
If you use My River for iPad (http://www.4bay.dk/MyRiverHD.htm), then the UI is optimized to run on a iPad.

I'm having trouble trying to use MyRiver.

In the Settings, you need to know Host & Port.

Where do I find this info - from some dialog in MediaCenter?

Thanks in advance.

Are there any plans to implement the Webplay feature to My River? It would be great as it would be a complete solution!!

The host is the IP address of the PC MC is on (assuming you are accessing it wirelessly on your lan). The default port is 52199 but it can be changed in MC under tools->options->Media Network->Advanced.

I got to play around with MyRiver for iPad last night.

In my opinion this app has a lot of promise but it's painful to use at the moment - at least for me. I used to use iPeng and normally use Foobar because it can use the Apple Remote app and works very smoothly - all this to say that I've been used to some really good apps.  I am trying JRiver now because supposedly there is a sonic benefit over Foobar (which I have yet to test) and have always ruled it out in the past because of how primitive it was from the perspective of remote control.

Anyways, here's a list of what I consider to be significant problems.  I'm not trying to be a jerk or demotivate the developer - I'm hoping to help.

1) Scrolling down a list of albums or artists takes forever.  I've never gotten past the D's because it is so slow and clunky.  I do have a humungous library and some form of alpha jump would be helpful, but the complaint here is that scrolling needs to be smooth.

2) When you do choose an artist, then get a list of albums, then get list of songs, going 'backwards' to the artist list is crazy painful.  I have to press the back arrow multiple times trying to get it to register. This coupled with no ability to go directly back to the artist list (which other apps support, btw) requires a lot of patience and is slow (because it has to redraw each new menu).  I think the back buttons are working like mouse buttons where it depresses when the pointer is over it, but it doesn't activate if the location changes before released.

- A single tap over the button should activate the button imo.
- There should be an easy way to go back to 'Artists' or 'Albums' (or whatever menu you were drilling down into)

3) When I get to a list of songs, pressing (i.e. selecting) one does nothing but highlight it.  Am I missing something here?  Is there a point to having a song highlighted?  To get it to play (or add to playlist) you have to double tap it.  Great that double tap exists and the pop up menu is great, but the default behavior (single tap) should do what the user finds most practical - in my case that would be 'play'.

4) Not sure if this is a problem, but when a song is playing, if I press on the album art (to the left hand side), the art disappears and I go into some unknown screen. What is this all about?  I expected to get a full screen 'now-playing' (with larger covert art etc).

I might be forgetting something (in which case I'll add another post).

Thanks for creating the app; hope you keep working on it - has a huge amount of potential.

Would it be possible to have an option to not show the artwork on the Artist list? I have over 5000 artists in my collection and not being able to quickly scroll through it is a showstopper. I'm convinced that not showing thumbnails at this level would dramatically speed up scrolling through the Artist list.  :)

The new version will be significantly faster at loading large lists with thumbnails, so I do not think it will be necessary.

Hate to say it!  But have you tried Gizmo?  That's the official Android app, developed by the J River team.  There hasn't been an equivalent one for iOS so that's why My River was developed.

No need.  That is what Gizmo is for.  If you want more functionality with Gizmo I suggest you hit up JRiver or whomever developed it.

I would prefer Michael to concentrate on what his is already working on rather than reinventing the wheel.

Also, isn't the whole point of the "open-source" aspect of Android that you can modify the app to suit yourself?  Or is "open-source" just something people want without knowing (myself included) what that means?

Cheers!

I rarely write reviews of products purchased, but I like My River so much that I just wrote a review of it on the iTunes store.  I was surprised to see that I was the first to write a review of V. 1.2.0 and I  found only one review of the previous version.  Michael has been so good about listening to lots of feature suggestions I thing we users should reciprocate by spreading the word by rating the app in the iTunes store.  Write what you want, of course--I'm not trying to stuff the ballot box--but new features likely depend on steady program sales.  Let's get the word out.

Thanks for responding to my note.

Go to the App store on your iPhone or other Apple device.  Once in the App store, search for My River.  Once on the My River page, scroll down to the ratings section.  It still says "No Ratings" on my iPhone, but there's one review there in addition to mine.  Tap "No Ratings" and you will be taken to the two reviews posted.  Tap on "Write a Review" and have at it.

Michael,

Thanks for the update!!!!!!!!!  KILLER!

The jump letters are HOT!

One teeny, tiny suggestion.  This only applies really to the Thumbnail View.  Could you move the thumb grid left just a bit to fit the jump letters in a "margin" so to speak?  In thumb view the lump letters, while transparent (cool!) still muddy the artist labels underneath.

This is obviously not a big deal, just a small observation.  If it was simple to remedy i would enjoy seeing it.  If not, no biggie.

Of course in list view this is not an issue.

Am I noticing a slight increase in scrolling performance?  Or am I imagining it?  Seems a bit quicker.

Thanks again Michael.  SIMPLY AWESOME and totally indispensable.

Cheers!
Patrick

I'm in the process of trying to setup 3 households for JRiver; I started out with JRiver/My River loaded on my home PC, then changed it to my laptop so I could go remote for some testing (had to set up new access code), and now trying to get it up and running on my desktop again but I cannot get the handheld to open up looking for the media network access key. I have reset the iPod and I have uninstalled and reinstalled MC 17 with no change. Does anyone have some suggestions as to how to break the stalemate?

I used the iPad version for hours last night.  SWEET!!!!!

I really like the playlist on the right side nice touch.  I didn't run into a single problem, crash or strong desire for other controls.

Well done.

One wish I would have is a Bio View available in the right pane, similar to eLyric.

My River doesn't use access key (yet, but in next version you can setup connection through access key)
You have to use Host address (IP address), and Port number.

The link is a bit hidden away from the user at the track level. Maybe you can also add it as an option to the popup when you double tab an artist and or album link.

Some suggestions:
-In addition to the biography text you could retrieve from last.fm an artist image to enhance the look of the biography page. And maybe this could be extended to a more general information option. If the mediatype is audio lookup on last fm. If the mediatype is something else show the information that is shown for that file in theaterview. Or nice looking custom screens also for media types tv or movies. Then you have most uses covered with a good looking layout. To make this information easy accessible from now playing add an Info button next to the list style button.

-Another suggestion I think could be useful is remembering the list style setting while browsing a view hierarchy. For example I prefer the list view for browsing albums and the tile view for the albums on the next level.

-If you search for my river in the app store on the ipad on the first page in the dutch store only my river shoes up. As it is listed under the ipad apps its easily mistaken as the dedicated ipad app. I bought the wrong version at first.

Yes I know, the problem is that when I originally made the first version of My River (for iPhone) I should have removed the iPad option, now I can't do it because it's released for both iPhone and iPad and Apple won't allow you to change it.

I'm using my river ipad.
In main screen of my river, i can type the Korean words in the right upper 'Filter' field and get the result.
But when i type the Korean words in the 'search' field in the left upper, the My river gives me no answer.

Michael, is it possible to get a back button on the "playing now" screen?  If I go to Playing Now I can't get back to the previous screen, I have to go all the way back to audio.

Still would love to see bit and sample rate on the progress bar - like in J River GUI.

This is still the best ios remote for iPad!

Jump letters are only available under Audio in current version, and only 2nd level e.g. Audio, Artist........

Well, I suppose I could put them on all levels except first and last (details view).

Hi I just purchased the software. Great software with nice interface.

However, I usually use the MC with several uPnP library and need to load / switch the upnp library. Does the remote can let me select the library to load?

Very nice. Thanks...

A quick question: I assume the answer is no but will it ever be possible to use the iPad version as a remote control but also have the ability to listen to the music on the iPad?

Will the client can support this function if MC web interface support this function? I will try to request to add this function in MC since this is a very important function.

I think that I maybe misunderstood your question.......?
DLNA Media Renderers will appear as zones in MC and My River (you can change zone under settings).

Love it!

So, for the iphone I really like the search/filter feature, but there are time when I know I won't be using it for a whole evening.  For the iPad this is no big deal (but still may be useful) but definitely for iPhone if under options there was a way to get rid of the bar because of the extremely limited real estate, each half cm matters.

Also, the way you have last.fm artist bio, what about lyrics in a similar fashion?  That would be very very cool.

Lastly, you've built the app for portrait, and that is great.  It is interesting because most of my apps go well in landscape, not portrait, but yours seems most happy in portrait.  The most offending screen is the Now Playing, where all those buttons on the bottom should be on the right, and that would allow the image to be much much larger, rather than having everything stacked - which of course makes a ton of sense for portrait.  I know that is getting pretty deep, the app is great, and having it optimized for landscape and portrait is something one does after a while but consider it.  Maybe put it low on a list somewhere, but at some point it will get to the top.

Some kind of Filter "bar" on/off option?

Good suggestion I'll have to investigate further.

I will consider to optimize Playing Now for landscape view in a future release.

If you select a song and press >PLAY, it plays that song, if you go to >PLAYING NOW, you get a big pic of the cover art, if you then tap the 3 stripes @ the bottom right, you only see 1 song, the one playing! That's why you can't play next from there, how to get around that?
You should have a button that says PLAY ALL (of the album), otherwise when I select a song, I can't go next in the PLAYING NOW. Or if I go to the list, the only way I can tell your software to go next is to tap on the next song and tell it to play.
If I don't do this, the song will just keep repeating that song over and over?
My JRiver is not on repeat because my other app JRemote does not get stuck on one selected song but will continue onto the next track.
So while everybody is raving here, I'm not getting any luck with my iTouch.

You have to double tap to select an entire smartlist/playlist/album (then you can press next in Playing Now).

Or single tap to browse.

Thank you for this wonderful iPad app. It really was the missing J River link for me.
You have received my 5 star vote.

If I may add a few ideas for the future wish list, these would be it for me:

1. Once at song selection level of an album, for example maybe below the duration of each song on the right hand side, it would be wonderful to have the rating (stars) to appear automatically, especially when there is a rating on that song.
2. As already requested, I also think someday it would be nice to have the info about the album files - 16/44.1, 24/88, 24/96, wav, flac, aiff, etc...
3. Due to the size of my collection, I always first enter by "Genres" depending on the mood, then select an artist etc... Which is perfect in almost all situations except In some cases/Genres where I would like to enter a Genre and then not see by artist but by album. Is it possible? (I haven't yet found it if it is possible)
I'm especially thinking of my "test discs" Genre section from various audiophile brands and audiophile magazines where every track on each album is from a different artist. In this Genre section, a per album view would be really appreciated as it is each time only one song per artist!

There is a lot of things already on the file view, I would rather keep it as clean as possible, and not put to many things at this view... anyway I will put it on the wish list and see what I can do.

If you select Show tags it will display all the info above.

You can create a customized view in JRiver, select Customize views for Gizmo, WebRemote, & Webplay... under Media Network in Options,
and create a view that looks something like this.

I can understand of course. The rating is only to remember my favorites in each album after a while coming back to it...  ;)

Thank you for the explanation with pictures. I have finally understood how it works and modified it all exactly to my preference & habits and cleared all the rest. This app beyond my expectations!

Great App! best one out there and I've tried them all.

I do have one feature request. That is to be able to connect to multiple media servers instead of have to change the access key or IP address every time.

Thank you.

I don't think it is possible to connect to multiple servers at the same time (correct me if I'm wrong), but maybe I could make a list of added servers so it would be easier to switch.

Does it support flac?
"Yes" - when streaming, JRiver will convert the flac file to mp3 on the fly, and stream it to My River.

Does it stream outside the home network, i.e., across 4G?
Yes if you configure port forwading (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_forwarding) on your router and use your external IP address when setting up My River.

I totally agree. In the ipad version there is plenty of space for it. It also could be made optional to be switched off or on in the settings.

Please implement this!

I've just downloaded the iPad version to use on an iPod touch (gen 4 iPod Touch), it appears in iTunes and says it syncs.  But it doesn't appear on the iPod Touch.
I'm also using JRemote (iPad, iPod, iPhone version) and it works fine.

I'm assuming that the iPad and iPod would use the same type.  Is that incorrect?
Or does the iPod require the iPhone version?  It didn't see that in the requirements as such, I'm pretty sure.

Just bought MyRiver today and love it. I have a couple of feature requests, the ability to swipe right to delete a song from "playing now" and the ability to reorder the playing now list. I'm not sure if either feature is possible but they would make My River and JRiver all that much more enjoyable for me.  Keep up the good work!

JRiver guys, I really enjoyed your newsletter this week, there was a lot of great info in the links, with an honourable mention going to the article below where I found many suggestions how to make Media Center really kick ass with high quality output.

Well we can always hope that one day it will be supported :)

How about viewing an image in a larger frame and/or a slide show?

While I'm asking, it would be nice to be able to save the ip and port for multiple locations so i don't have to reenter it each time. eg. I  listen on wifi and 3G and it would be nice if it saved my last couple of entries so I could select the ip rather than renter it.

Still love the app, I'm listening to it now on my wireless headphones being broadcast from my amp, very versatile.

Very Nice, THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

I bought both the IPAD and iPhone version. I have been waiting seems so long for someone to develop an iOS app for JRiver for my iOS devices. I literally have been working towards replacing them with Android so I could use Gizmo. I switched to and Android Phone and just bought a Phillips Android player last week and would not if I had found your App first. I was tired of Apple messing around and breaking WebGizmo and WebPlay just didn't really look and function the way I wanted. Plugplayer always gave me inconsistent results but was thankfull to at least have that but now I have "My River".

So far I haven't haven't had anything weird happen...just seems to work and work well.

Well I've been using it on the iPad for a week now and am very happy with My River. It works well at home and during my commute or sitting at my desk. I love the ability to control the different zones and stream to my device or control the server wherever I am at home, whether playing through my wireless headphones when the household is asleep or controlling the stereo from another room when playing through the load speakers.  MC17 & My River is an amazing combo... Great job to everyone involved, this is the ultimate experience. Can't wait to see what additional features both apps will bring!

Hello
I just bought on itunes, the version for ipad and iphone
I love this application My River

I also like eLyric, because we had save a playlist of songs that we listen.

Example, all 50 songs that I just played, I would save them in a playlist as eLyric
I think it 's only lack this feature to make me happy.

(excuse my english, i'm in Québec)

Tank you for your good work ;)

Another vote for a simple way to play whole albums please.  Most of my listening is to albums vs single tracks, so this is a biggie for me.

Never mind, I found that double tapping the album will allow me to play the whole album.

I think that would be using JRiver's hidden Library server.  If I am not mistaken Bob said it transcodes to 256 mp3.

If you are using on the same network as the files I would maybe try PlugPlayer.  It would tap into a Server you set up as "never convert".

Good luck.

What if you are playing to the device while at home (on the same network as the files), how can I make it play full resolution FLACs?

Is this possible?  Or does it already?  If so, how does it know where I am?

My River streams the same way as WebPlay/Gizmo and it always uses 128 mp3, as far as I know it is not configurable, in other words FLACs is always converted.

Thanks Michael...  I really appreciate the info.

well that sucks.  Back to UPNP and PlugPlayer i guess.

When streaming over my own home network, I can easily handle FLACs at full resolution.  I will simply be forced to use UPNP again.

Since when is 128 "medium"?  Isn't that like the crappiest bitrate mp3 realistically used?

Cheers,
patrick

There is the source of your horrible sound quality goatherder.  Although I would assume you to be of the opinion that [good] MP3s are indistinguishable from FLACs.  Good to hear you using your ears ;)

It actually sounds even lower than 128K TBH - and we're not talking about listening thru some highfalutin' speaker system but even thru the iPad speakers (which might, actually, emphasise low-bitrate artifacts due to the tinny upper mids). Is there any way to jack up the bitrate at all?

Since when is 128 "medium"?  Isn't that like the crappiest bitrate mp3 realistically used.

You are absolutely right, I was just "quoting" Matt.......

Currently medium-bitrate MP3 is always used for WebPlay.

Hopefully this will become more configurable in the future.

Gizmo always uses 128 mp3.  It is currently not configurable.

Have you tried streaming with WebPlay/Gizmo, if yes is the sound quality the same?

I'm afraid there is no way to improve the sound quality in current version, but I will investigate if there is some way to improve it for a future release.

I have done a little more research and I think that I'm able to get My River to stream to 320 mp3, I will try to implement it in next release.

Thanks. 256K is a nice median bitrate I think for all-purpose use. The other thing it could be is crappy transcoding - does it use the LAME engine or something else? - but I could swear it's not even sounding like 128K right now with music. I mostly listen to my downloaded podcasts though using My River in the bath, so it's not a big deal. It just is annoying when I'm sitting somewhere with the iPad, want to casually listen to something through the headphone jack and can't really bring myself to due to the artifacts / low bitrate.

For streaming I can only choose between Mp3 low = 64 kbit, Mp3 Medium = 128 kbit or Mp3 High = 320 kbit.

Next version, streaming will be in 320 ;)

The other thing it could be is crappy transcoding - does it use the LAME engine or something else?
I don't know if JRiver uses LAME for real time transcoding.... ?

Really nice update, thanks!

Especially the ability to see the ratings is really usefull for me.

One small thing I noticed is that when shortly tapping the cover art of the track playing, the rating stars always appear all grey in the overlay, even though the rating is for example 3 stars.

Thanks again!

Ditto on the appreciation for the latest update.  I love the ability to change ratings, the tag viewing option, wide screen view of left pane and 64kbps playback which is good enough on the train and doesn't skip or drop off as it used to when I hit 3G low reception areas. Great job!

P.S. bring able to save separate settings for home and remote use is excellent as well.

I've installed the iPad version. Seems very nice but I have some problem or it's a known bug:
When I browse to albums in larger thumbnail grid mode the covers shown does not match the albums names.
When I dbl click the cover it opens the album (by the name) and shows the correct photo cover and songs.

I guess the cover caching is somehow messed up. You should be able to resolve it by restarting JRiver Media Server and My River.

Double Tap the HOME Button and you will see all the applications that are currently open.
Press and hold the My River application until you see the minus sign, Tap the minus Sign to close My River.
Tap the Home Button and you will be back to the Home Screen, restart My River.

I just updated to the latest version from app store on my iPod Touch. Now I don't have cover art in now playing screen. I also have no small thumbnails to the left of the tracks in the playing now playlist screen. All these were just working fine before upgrading. I see small thumbnail covers displayed correctly in other screens.

Any suggestions? If not, is it possible to uninstall this version and get back to previous version?

Hello all,

I have an idea that is a today need for me and maybe also for some other people.

Could it be possible to have 2 buttons that can activate a batch file on the HTPC. This to activate a relay board that is switching my amplifier on and off. Even better if this button is available for every configured zone.

It should look like someting as speakers on and off.

Latest version has high resolution images in the Playing now screens.
I can see that there has been some issues with JRemote and high resolution images as well.
I will try to implement a work around for this ASAP, without the high resolution images.

Firstly, thanks for such an awesome piece of software. Sure jriver is great but this app has truly revolutionised the way i listen to music and even the family can use it!!

Secondly, there is just own tweak that would actually make this perfect.

Is it possible to add the star rating when browsing tracks for example on an album??

I mostly play random smart lists or whole albums, but sometimes want to pick just my favourite tracks, but I am hope less with remembering track names, so displaying the star rating next to the song title would be great.

Also I suspect a more tricky request, I don't suppose it's possible to modify and save th rating from my river.?

Anyway, once again thanks for a truly amazing app simple but it just does everything so right,!!

You can already add rating on tracks, album rating is not possible (yet), and the rating is saved in MC.

The app is using JRiver's web-service, and I don't think it's possible to run a batch file from the web-service.

Thanks Michael, it's greatly appreciated.

Also, I'm not sure if you are aware, but your app gets a mention in a super high end amplifier (Classe Audio) manufacturers recommeded PC audio setup.

They recommend using JRiver along with your app for streaming via PC to thier new £4500 pre-amplifier (power amp is an extra £5000)

WOW - now works perfectly.

Will I be asked to enter user name and password each time MyRiver loads?? If so can this be automated?? I know it kind of defeats the object of authentication but the rating feature is something that I will use heavily.

I always start off a new album as 3 stars, then as I become accustomed to it like to tweak the ratings up or down. This is then useful if I want random play but only for example 3 star and ablve.

But once again thanks for the great work!!

"Full album being added to playlist as shuffled."

I rarely (if ever) play full albums with My River but last night I noticed when adding a full album to play, it was added as shuffled, not in original track order. I checked J River to make sure it wasn't on shuffle mode. It wasn't. I tried multiple times and every time it was added shuffled, but added in exact same track sequence each time, even though shuffled. No matter how I added the album to the playlist, "add to end", "add as next to play", "play", all methods added as shuffled. "Play (shuffled)" worked correctly, adding as shuffled.

I tried JRemote and it worked correctly first attempt and on subsequent attempts.

Any ideas on what I could be doing wrong? I'm running My River app on IPod Touch.

Thanks,

Bill

Is the detail view of the album out off order as well (e.g. same shuffled order)?
Have you made any customized views with special sorting?

Thanks Michael! That's exactly what the problem was. I had been playing around with a custom view because of a problem I'm having in JRemote with how search results are being displayed for tracks that have more than one result with same name. Once I deleted the special sorting from the custom view, albums are now added in correct track sequence.

I'll go on record, as an owner of My River, JRemote, Bit Remote and Web Gizmo, to say My River is by far the standout performer for me. I use it on an IPod Touch strictly for remote control of audio playback.

Thanks again,

Hi,

Great app.

A couple of questions I can't find answers for -

1..How do I delete a Server from My River ?
(I have no problem adding them, but I can't find, the no doubt obvious, way to delete one.)

2..I would like to invoke My River from my iRule app. It wants to know the "Custom URL Scheme" that My River uses.
I can't find it anywhere. Anyone know of it ?

Thanks,

Michael,

Firstly, I LOVE this app. It is simply indispensable for me now.

Which leads to my problem. Over the last few days, it has started cutting out before the end of songs - sometimes skipping to the next song, and sometimes just dropping dead.

I've compared streaming to MyRiver vs streaming to my laptop running MC client, and I'm not seeing the problem on the client. This makes me suspect it's not a matter of signal strength.

Any clues?

Weak or low Wi-Fi signal strength could result in the behavior you describe.

I have a question about My River versus Gizmo and WebGizmo.  This also seems to happen with JRemote.  When I control MC with My River it seems that it takes over the main screen for MC.  Ie the MC screen changes to reflect what My River is looking at.  So if I am looking at one Zone with My River I can't look at a different Zone with MC.  This seems to slow down the interaction and also if something goes wrong (like bad playback) lock up MC.  If I use Gizmo or WebGizmo this doesn't happen.  I can look at one Zone with WebGizmo and a different Zone on MC.  Is this expected or is there a setting somewhere to change this?  I am surprised that this happens since I thought My River and Gizmo are using the same API.  Thanks!

Michael,
I am experiencing a glitch when rating tracks in the "playing now" view. The number of stars I select will light up momentarily, but don't persist for more than a couple of seconds. Also the stars I assign are not recorded. My ratings from several weeks ago have been recorded and I can access them. I tried deleting and re-installing My River, but that did not resolve the glitch. The same problem occurs on both my iPhone and iPad. Can you suggest a remedy?
Overall, I continue to enjoy your program.

I know, there is probably a legal issue here, but if not from the web, then from the lyrics field in the JMC database?
Would really be nice to add it in the list just below the Bio button.
Thanks for a really nice app.
Keep up the good work.

Yes there are some legal issues with lyrics from the web, so this will not be an option.

In the next version you will be able to show lyrics (from MC), when tapping the lyrics field from the tags view.

Title: My River - Rating
Post by: suttonn on August 28, 2012, 08:00:07 pm
Hi,

I just want to say what a great app you've built. It saved my home stereo from the tyranny of rivermote. That app worked OK afor me for about a year, but just started acting up so bad badly I felt I no longer had control of my multi-zone stereo. Your app has restored control of my music system back to me. I do hope you will continue to support it and add to the already awesome features you have.

My music colection is pretty large, and I find that My River sometimes disconnect if I dont interact with it for awhile, but the saving grace is that it is a simple matter to restart it and it catches up and lets me do what I need. The one feature that doesn't seem to work for me is to add a rating to songs. I have triedfrom both the album cover are in the lower left. I can click to display the rating, but it won't store the value when I rate a song. the same thing happens when I do a long click on a song in the Playing Now list and select Rating. Clicking a rating value results in the spinning wheel going for a bit, then the page refreshes, but the rating doesn't take. This is feature I love to use, because as I meander through my music collection and find great songs I haven't rated yet I will rate then and automatically add it to some smart lists I have set up.

I'm wondering why I am having this problem. It seemed to me it did work when I first downloaded the app though I cant be sure because I was having some memory problem with the app due to very large smarlists being loaded into several zones at the time. But I have been able to work around that easily enough by 'cleaning up' after myself when I use the app.

Any suggestions on the rating problem? I'd love to have that feature working for me.

Thanks!!!

Rating only works if you enable authentication in MC.
Once enabled you will get prompted for Username and Password in My River.

Hi Michael,

I have the latest version in use but sorry to say I have problems now. I did not have them before. The result is now that often the complete system is blocking. Only a hard restart of the JRmc soft is solving it.

How can I go back to the previous version?

Good evening,
I'm afraid I have the same problem with the last version : after a few minutes, JRiver crashes and I have the restart everything. After a few days, it was even impossible to use My River : it kept asking for the use rid and the password - I then reinstalled My River - everything has been working fine for half an hour, and then the problems started again.
I've been using My River for months now, because it has really useful functions and I never had problems before, only since the new version has been installed
other interfaces, like Gizmo, are working fine, but they are not as nice as My River
Help would be welcome

Regards

Michael,
Have you given any consideration of releasing as app that is hard wired to "play here"?
This would allow me to share my music library remotely with myself and kids without messing up the currently playing music.  I believe this would be another avenue for revenue.

I see no point in releasing another app just for that, why not just set it to streaming and leave it there?

I have downloaded the update, and it did NOT solve the issue.

When I select one album and listen to it then it works. When after a while I select an other song from an other album J River is blocked and the app as well.

Are you working with Video currently?
How do we tag videos to distinguish them from "movies" "tv shows" and music "concerts"?
Also, JRiver Media Center recognizes MKV, ISO, VOB, and other file types that are not showing up in My River lists.
I have complete music concerts with ISO format and have broken those concerts out into individual songs that are vob format.
JRiver allows me to create different video library views so I have:
Childrens movies
Movies (not including childrens)
Concerts (complete)
Individual concert songs in song name order
Individual concert songs in artist, concert, song
and others....
Not sure how you can differentiate from the different lists.  Would be nice.
You have a great product, keep the stuff coming.

Streaming video is not my area of interest currently, I was thinking of using it as a remote to select videos for jriver to play locally.  With the above information this will be what I needed with one exception.  Do need for the video formats to be included (ISO, VOB, MKV).
Where do the "views" show in My River after they have been selected in JRiver Media Center?
Good stuff, thanks

The views that are set up in "Customise Views for WebGizmo...." are the ones that My River uses.  So, in answer to your question "Where do the views show in My River after they have been selected in JRiver Media Center", the answer is "on My River's display".

You probably have default views set up in there already which are excluding ISO, VOB, MKV, or not including the various categories that you want or grouping by them.

My River is a remote control for J River and you use it to select videos for J River to play locally. Although you can select a different zone to play in, e.g. the device that is being used as the remote control, to stream to instead. This has no effect on how the views are set up, it is an independent thing.

If you already have views set up the way you want them in Standard View then follow the screenshot shown above to copy them into the Gizmo views.

Hi,

First of all, I'm a newbie to J River Media Center and My River. I only downloaded yesterday and purchased the App. I want to use it with my shiny new Cambridge Stream Magic 6 device. I've posted several message in other threads, but it looks as if I'm down to believing the app is the problem. Having just flicked through the articles here, it looks as if you might have encountered this already; so I'm trying to work out if there is a new version just coming or whether I'm on the latest?

Basically, using MC17 to the Stream Magic 6 device works flawlessly from the Win7 PC. In fact, I can't believe how great it is! However, as soon as I start to connect to MC17 from My River and try to either look at the current playing list or add new tracks, randomly, I get a complete lockup in MC; whilst the My River app remains in a 'doing something' state.

Initially, I thought this must be a Stream Magic 6 problem, then a MC17 problem; given these two work together with absolutely no problem, it has to be the App.

Unfortunately, I'd sent you an email via the Apple Contact link rather than posting here.

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.

Kind regards

Carl

No I hadn't! That looks extremely useful; I can't wait to get home from work now! I'd also be able to stick Charles Proxy server between the browser and MC, therefore I'd be able to look at all traffic. Thanks for the heads up. I'll will post my findings later.

For a start, wow! WebGizmo is awesome. It is controlling the Stream Magic 6 very well, as does it control the player on the MC17 machine and locally it's playing the music. No crashes yet! In fact, it seems to be a rock over the past 2hrs!! This is all from my laptop. So, I'm now moving over to the website from my ipad.

A bit early, but the iPad version of it appears to be stable too. I have to head to bed early.. but will keep trying. Does this help to pin down My River as having some issue?? Or does the mystery become even more magical??
Title: Re: My River - Media Center Remote (for iPhone, iPod Touch & iPad)

Hi Michael,

I can confirm that the WebGizmo works perfectly! It's controls the Magic 6 streamer, streams FLAC audio from browser and controls the playing on the MC17 server. Test setup:

PC with MC17
Cambridge Magic Streamer 6
iPad
Laptop

Both the iPad and Laptop control the playing of music through WebGizmo, perfectly.

As soon as I start up My River. I find it painfully slow. It will eventually crash MC17; not necessarily straight away. It does seem to be a lot more stable when controlling the PC/MC17 player or streaming locally. However, it is unusable really for Magic Streamer.

Where do I go from here? I'm now convinced this isn't a MC17 or MC18 problem (tried the new version), so will continue to purchase a license.

I'm a little disappointed I've purchased an iPad app that doesn't operate as I would expect; although WebGizmo is a great trade off. I'm tempted to tailour this, given my web developer background..

Kind regards

Carl

If the app doesn't live up to your expectations you could always claim a refund from Apple (use this tutorial):

Hi Michael,

First of all, I need to say sorry; I've let my frustration be aired publicly here and I shouldn't have. I've got a nice piece of new tech that works brilliantly with MC17. I've tried it with several apps, including the free one by the Magic 6 makers, and they've all failed in some way or have lacked functionality. I had assumed My River would be the answer, hence my dissatisfaction and grumpy post. I hope you can accept my apology.

I've been deeply impressed with WebGizmo! It works flawlessly and doesn't cause a problem; although its a little lacking in some areas (I plan to look around today to see if it's a closed solution or open to dev).

I appreciate you don't have a Magic 6 device (they are pretty expensive too). I don't suppose you are in Hampshire? If you were, I'd be willing to actually bring it round and lend for a few days to try to resolve. Assuming not, I think I'll continue to try to diagnose the problems. I'll set-up some proxying software to intercept the messages in order to try to trap the error; therefore, if I find something, I would really appreciate your help in trying to fix whatever I need in My River (hence, I'm happy to leave the payment as-is. It is only a few £'s anyway). Ultimately, My River looks like the app I need; given it doesn't work for me yet. I now have WebGizmo to help me compare and contrast to find out in what circumstance the hang occurs.

Kind regards

Carl

I'm afraid it's probably just a case of experimenting, and with separate apps to try out it can get expensive! Although the app costs are not really that expensive in the grand scheme of things.

The MC web based controller was always a bit basic and quite frustrating, it looked like a web site from 15 years ago. Then they released Gizmo for Android, but wouldn't release an iOS version.  So people started looking for generic DLNA controller apps, such as Plugplayer, and then independent developers saw an opportunity for a dedicated app, like My River and J Remote.  Only then did the web-based service get an update in the form of Web Gizmo but to be honest I've never tried it.

I'm currently playing with J Remote. I've got My River too but I find it a bit slow in comparison with J Remote. I may be wrong but I can't imagine that Web Gizmo can surpass a native app for responsiveness and eye candy etc.  Does it have a real-time volume control for example?  I know the old web service didn't.

I've been surprised how quick WebGizmo has been to respond in comparison to My River and Magic Stream App. The App's appear to be very cumbersome. I've been put off by J Remote, purely on price. I really would love to try it before I buy. However, I'm interested to read your observation that you find J Remote more responsive. Does it have the 'Zones' feature and what set up are you using?? Just iPad and PC with MC17, or something more???
Title: Re: My River - Media Center Remote (for iPhone, iPod Touch & iPad)
Post by: csimon on October 29, 2012, 06:23:07 am
Yes, J Remote has Zones, although it doesn't yet have linking of zones (I believe this is because MC doesn't expose the function via web services as yet).

I've got two server PCs, one with MC17 and one with MC18 - gradually in the process of replacing the old PC. An iPad for control (with Plugplayer, My River and J Remote), and playing to zones of either the server PC upstairs or a WD TV Live in the living room.

I've been looking at the Cambridge Audio NP30 actually as a "decent" audio renderer. And I may replace the WD TV live with a small media player PC as a MC client (Zotac Zbox for example).

No, unfortunately I live in Denmark.

I've found a memory leak caused by the way lists are created I will try to fix this ASAP, hopefully this will help.

I submitted the new version to the app store today, with bug fixes and minor design changes.

I have the My River lock up problem  . I can use Gizmo from an iPad, Gizmo Android from my Android phone, use the PC with MC18 and Vista, use Skifta from an Android phone - all these things work but My River locks up MC18 on the PC and renders the whole system unusable. I haven't tried JRemote on the iPad.

Very frustrating because My River has a nice interface and the primary user is my partner and she is not that computer savvy.

OK Michael,

What to do now, create a log file and send it to you or to JimH?
I expect to work on this during the upcoming weekend.

I'm not sure if my skills in reading MC log files will make a difference :-\
I would recommend to go through the WIKI Stability (http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Stability) list from the top, and see if there is something that triggers your MC freeze/crash (combined with My River).
As mentioned earlier, MC doesn't freeze in my setup, even with heavy use over several hours ?

I downloaded and installed the latest update yesterday on my iPod Touch. Not sure what changes have been made but everything went smooth and just works. Seems very stable even searching through 50k tracks.

One thing I did notice is the appearance of the buttons at bottom of screen have been updated and the now playing cover art no longer looks like it's reflecting back up from where buttons are. I like the new look, even if it is only a minor change. Why mess with success is a good motto.

Thanks.

I´ve scrolled through this thread but I havn´t found something concerning my issue with My River:
If I use the button "New albums" the titels are mixed in a unreproducable manner. With some folders everything is ok (meaning track list is from 1,2..to15,16), others are comletely mixed. If I view the exact same folder under "albums", everything is correct with every album. So I have first to look in the "new albums" what i like to listen to, than switch to the "albums" tag, searching for the album and then hit "play". I have this issue with all the versions I had in place. Actually I did a fresh reinstall of the current version (1.17.1), but the failure is still there.
Any suggestions?

The album views on My River is showed in the way they are sorted in JRiver.
Try the following go to Options, Media Network, Customize views for......... select "New albums" and click Set rules for file display... and set Track# sort order to (a-z).
Restart JRiver media server and try My River again.

Svend, hoping you can help me find cause of my river causing jriver to lockup and stop responding. I love your app for my iPad. I removed and redownloaded and reinstalled. Problem continues. Simple summary my river opens and I try to choose zone to control.  My river just hangs while it looks for zones. When I go to the pc where jriver runs it has frozen jriver and get windows this program has stopped responding

Can push to my rendered a micca ep600g2 from jriver without problem. But when I try to choose a different song on my iPad with my river, all heck breaks loose again.

How do I make sure log is being created so I can send to you for your review.

Desperate in Miami I am.

A wild guess but you aren't running zone alarm are you? Got some real negative reports on that recently.

Try to temporarily turn off anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall products and see if the problem persist afterwards.
And/or have a look here:

Unfortunately I do not have much time to improve My River at the moment, so no further development is planned at this point.

Michael,
Sorry to hear that you won't be developing My River.  I guess I'll have to switch to JRemote.

See above.  This app is no longer supported by the developer.  I think everyone has moved on to JRemote.

For what it's worth, My River works fine with iOS7 on my iPhone 4s and I expect it will also work fine with an iPad/iOS7.

Hi,

I just bought JRemote for iPad, connected with the access key to my MC UPNP server, browsed to my video view, double clicked on any video and I get this message:

"All tracks will play now, starting with...*name of file I double-clicked*"

Then nothing happens. I tried to press Stop, Play again, in vain.

Any idea? Running MC 19.

Thank you
Melkiades

It might not be certified for use on iOS9

I'd assume that the developer removed it then.
