Title: Upgrade to MC17 -- Questions and Answers
Post by: JimH on October 20, 2011, 05:37:57 pm
Please download (http://www.jriver.com/download.html) and install MC17.0.  The Download page (link above) has the "stable" build.  A newer, but possibly less stable build will be found in a thread near the top of this board.

Purchase through the Help menu in MC17.  Upgrades are $26.98.

Complete Upgrade Instructions are on our Wiki (http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Upgrade_to_MC18)

Please post any questions in this thread.

Alex B's advice from another thread:

Just install MC17. You don't need to uninstall MC16. In any case do not specify the MC16 install location if you want to install MC17 to a custom location.

MC17 will copy the currently active MC16 library and most of the configured MC16 options. Some features may have changed fundamentally and thus have different or incompatible settings in MC17 (as jmone said, Theater View is one of those).

You can uninstall MC16 anytime, but I would recommend keeping it for a while.

Before uninstalling MC16 you should back up anything you want to preserve from C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\J River\Media Center 16\ (XP) or C:\Users\[user]\Appdata\Roaming\J River\Media Center 16\ (Vista or newer), e.g. cover art or library backup files.

Will you have the Update Manager in MC16 notify us of an upgrade to MC17 at some point? Or is it required to download the new version manually?

Download manually now.  The MC16 update won't show MC17 for at least a couple of months.

I can't purchase MC17, I get the error: "there was a problem connecting the command to the program."  Then "Failed to initiate Media Center purchase."

Hello,

I installed MC 17 beta tonight -- currently running a somewhat recent version of 15.  Installing 17 did not restore my library or settings from 15.  There is nothing in the library and it says that it will automatically search my computer for media files after XX seconds - which I cancel.

Any idea why it is not automatically installing my library and settings from MC 15?  What is the best way to port over my library and settings if it can't be done automatically?

I am currently looking to purchase MC.  I have a demo version of MC16.  Should I just download and buy a license for MC 17 or can I buy MC 16 and apply that license to MC 17 when the official version comes out.  I do not want to have to purchase MC 16 and then 17 withing a couple weeks of each other.  Thanks.

Anyone who purchased a license for MC16 since October 1 has received an MC17 license. You will only need to download and install MC17.

This means that if you purchase now you will receive an MC17 license that will work with the recent MC16 builds. This license will continue to work when you install MC17.

Probably it would be good to have the latest MC16 build installed before purchasing the license (I think 16.0.179 was the most recent build at the time when licensing changed). The current build is 16.0.181. It is available here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=67084

In the upgrade instructions on the wiki, there is also a new way to purchase without installing.  You just copy and paste an old Registration Code (MC10 to MC16, or MJ8) and you receive a new one (MC17).

See Alternate Purchase Method (http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Upgrade_to_MC17).

I posted the other day about installing MC 17 and it not picking up my libraries and settings.  How do I do this manually?  Is it as simple as importing the last MC 15 backup?  I'm concerned there is something wrong with the installation given that it did not pick up the library and setting automatically.  Or maybe I I should have installed 16 first and then 17?

Restoring an MC15 backup should work.

Is it possible to use move MC16 thumbnails folder to MC17 to avoid having to rebuild all thumbnails?

Rebuiling thumbnails a very time consuming process with a big library. I seem to remember it was possible to do this in the upgrade from MC 15 to 16.

I tried it and it works. Another benefit of doing this is that all the auto generated thumbnails from video files on data CD's /DVD etc are retained. You lose these by rebuilding thumbnails.

What about if MC16 was purchase before Oct. 1, like in July?  An upgrade cost is required in that instance to go to MC17?  Upgrade costs within 6 months of a software purchase are hard to swallow in our current economic climate.

I couldn't agree more. I think it's a brilliant piece of software which i get plenty of use out. Unfortunately i bought it less than 3 months ago.

We have to cut it off on some date and October 1 is it.

We begin to offer an upgrade license at a reduced price long before the next version is at a stable release status.

If you buy each year when the new version goes into beta, MC will cost you about 37 cents a week.  Or around a cup of Starbuck's coffee every other month.

So you can buy it now for $18.98, or wait until later when it will be $26.98, or just stay with MC16.

I'm sorry if you don't feel that it's fair.

will there be a way to do a custom install and install *only* the audio section? I don't use MC for Video, only Audio.

I bought MC16 a couple months ago, I guess i need to find the date on that.

Pretty happy with it other than the "get album art from internet" that does not work well.

MC17 Upgrade: Codec pack still necessary?

I'm planning to upgrade from MC13 to MC17. In the past MC13 sometimes asked me to install Quicktime for playing some movies. I did not want that, installed CCCP and watched that files with Media Player Classic HC. Do I still need CCCP or can I uninstall that?

Best regards,

Michael

Red October takes care of codecs so you don't need CCCP.  There is more on our Wiki.

Almost certainly not for most users.

MC17 (and MC16, actually) now has a great feature built-in called Red October where the system automatically obtains and configures a pre-tested set of high-quality decoding filters that handle pretty much any media type you are likely to throw at it.  Even better, it uses these filters without registering them on the system, so they don't mess anything else up that might be more touchy.

If you are using more esoteric files, then you could end up still needing some auxiliary software, but probably not.  The only exception to that might be MOV files.  If you have these, you might need to install "real QuickTime" or "QTLite" to get decoding for that file format to work.

I have a lot of them, but they are encoded with Apple's ProRes codec anyway, so I have to have "real" QuickTime installed on those systems (and the ProRes codec for Windows).
Title: Re: Upgrade to MC17 -- Questions and Answers
Post by: Raysy on November 03, 2011, 06:00:30 pm
First of all: Thanks for your quick replies!!  :)

No, that files were not "real" Quicktime-MOV or QT-files, probably MPEG4 or something...

BTW: There ist the topic "Upgrade licenses are $18.98 ($8 off) through November 4"

but the first line says "We're selling upgrade licenses at a reduced price -- $18.98 -- until November 15."

Maybe a remain of the MC16 beta offer?
Title: Error Message during MC17 install - Failure to Load JRTools.dll - Help!
Post by: dkusumoto on November 03, 2011, 06:29:14 pm
I have MC 15.0.174 and I can't complete the installation of MC 17 because I keep getting an error message that says it can't load a file called JRTools.dll  I wanted to take advantage of the $18.98 upgrade price.

I'm also very afraid of upgrading because of other users noting the difficulty of preserving playlists and other custom data from older versions.

I downloaded the executable file, re-booted my computer, ran the MC 17 upgrade file - and it still comes back before finishing with a "Critical Error" pop-up that says, "Failed to load JRTools.dll" with the additional words, "Reinstall the original program."  I have my registration code from MC 15 handy, but I'm WAY too afraid to purchase via the "Alternate Method" when there's a conflict with the same executable upgrade file being offered in both download methods.  Best, David.

Please download and install MC17.0 from a build you will find at or near the top of this board.

Purchase through the Help menu in MC17.  Upgrades are $18.98 for a week or so.

I do not get the $ 18.98 upgrade, but I get the full price of 44.98. I am trying to upgrade from MC14 to MC17. Tried this upgrade from my MC14 and also from the just downloaded and installed MC17 beta. Can anyone help me as to why I am not getting the special upgrade offer?

Just jumped from MC 12 to 17. For a while now my audio does NOT play when I open the program. Have to close it and reopen every time. Figured MC17 would fix this but no dice. Any idea how to solve that? Library points to Z:, a networked "virtual" drive which redirects in case that matters. Worked fine that way a long time and then this bug turned up.

Could you use Help > Logging, and send a log to matt at jriver dot com showing the issue?

Thanks for the upgrade.

This isn't a common report.

Perhaps an over-ambitious security program (virus checker, etc.) is causing trouble?
Title: Re: Upgrade to MC17 -- Questions and Answers
Post by: dkusumoto on November 03, 2011, 08:03:23 pm
I turned off my anti-virus program - and here's what I got during my third (3rd) failed attempt to install MC 17.  Before finishing, a pop-up appears that says, "Critical Error"

The text says:
"The following module has failed to load:
C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 17\PackageInstaller.exe

It has reported the following error:

Failed to load JRTools.dll

Please re-install the latest version of the program."

I'm resigned at this point that there is something wrong with my computer that prevents installation of the upgrade from Media Center 15.0.174  I like what I have now but was eager to get the $18.98 upgrade because MC 15 has been awesome.  I wonder if a "clean install" would have made a difference - but I would then lose all of my Playlists if I removed MC 15.  I'm happy w/MC 15 as is.  Thanks anyway.

I've re-booted twice, turned off my anti-virus software; there's just something wrong on my end, I know it.  I'm happy with MC 15.0.174  Too nervous that continued attempts and interaction between MC 17 installation with my older 15.0.174 program will mess up my playlists.  Thanks anyway.

You could export your playlists to m3u files if you're concerned.

That's true.  I've exported all of my Playlists and put them into a separate file folder away from my program file folders.  I'll probably try a complete un-install of MC 15 and install MC 17 and use my registration code (if the installation program will let me) to get the upgrade price.  I'll be so mad if this things blows up on me....

Make a library backup with MC 15.  Then you can restore it with MC 15 or MC 17 and not lose anything.

Matt and Jim - you guys are GREAT!  MC 17 is up and running, I got the $18.98 upgrade price - and all is working super!  Because I kept having installation problems -- I went ahead and did as you recommended, e.g., I BACKED UP ALL OF MY PLAYLISTS FROM MC 15 INTO A SEPARATE FOLDER -- and then I did a COMPLETE UNINSTALL of MC 15.

I then did a CLEAN INSTALL of MC 17 - so it wouldn't have to LOOK at other, old/previous versions of Media Center on my computer - and the MC 17 installation sailed through beautifully with no error messages at all.  I'm listing to one of my 50 Playlists now and it's running great.  Thanks!

I'm running an old computer and whatever it was that's on it, was conflicting with the installation.  Is it possible to move the entire program to a new computer when I get it - without paying for the program again?

Absolutely.

Just download and install the latest version of the program (which you can always get from this forum, "stickied" to the top of the board).  Then, to install the license, simply walk through the "restore from Internet" process the system offers you.  No problem at all.  You'll just need the email address and password you registered with when you bought the upgrade.

Also, this is very unlikely, but... If it happens to be within 2 weeks, you can save the MJR file (which they emailed you when you made the purchase) to a floppy or other media (wink wink (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=67421.0)), then copy it over to the new computer, and double click on it.  That will automatically install your license on the new computer.  The MJR files expire after two weeks, but they'll generate a new one for you up to ten times per rolling 12 month period using that "restore from Internet" method.

To move your Library files, the easiest way is to use the built-in Backup and Restore system, which works very well.  This is also easy.  Simply load up MC on the old computer.  Select your library under Playing Now and choose Backup.  Save the backup somewhere easy to get to, like on your desktop.  The backup will be a ZIP file.  Then, copy that backup zip file over to the new computer (good luck getting that onto a floppy) and open MC on the new computer and use the Restore process to "restore the backup".

It will restore your entire Library (the database of the files, and setup, not the media files themselves, you need to move them yourself) and all of MC17's settings onto the new computer.

Hi
Every Year when I want to purchase the upgrade, I have the same problem in completing your upgrade form.
When I give You all the informations wanted and  hit the button "continue", I'm always led back to the beginning of the form, saying I should put in a valid email address, though it's the same address you informed me that the update is avaible.
So I can't complete and don't get the key. Can You help me please.

I had no trouble finding and downloading MC17 people. Open your eyes. It's right there. It installed just fine and it did import MC16 settings. I have no problem running them both. I also have 14 and 15 installed. (don't ask why) They all work fine.
The only trouble I have is the PVD-Import plug-in. I can't get it to install on MC17. I think I had the same problem when I tried to install it in MC16. I forgot how I got it working though.
I'm running Windows 7 (64-bit) I tried to do the regedit thing but, I can't seem to locate pvdimport in the directories to change the 0's into 1's. I know some of you guys have no idea what I'm talking about. But, to those of you who do know, help me remember what the hell I forgot.

I found what I was looking for in regedit. It's listed in the Wow6432Node folder. I'll let know if I get to work.

PvdImport is working. I had to add the strings manually though.

I just bought MC17 last night and had a question about activation.  I got my HTPC and another PC at home that does most of my ripping/encoding licensed, but I see in the email that you have 14 days to license the product.  I tend to reformat my computers fairly at least once a year, if not more depending on lots of circumstances.  Will I be able to activate MC17 if say in a month or two I reformat my computer, or my SSD takes another dump and I have to secure-erase it?

You have ten restores per year, and each one will give you an Install Key that lasts 14 days.  You won't normally run out.

Details are under "Purchase" above.

On purchase, you receive a permanent Registration Code.  This is a proof of purchase that can be used at any time to acquire a new Install Key.  The Install Key must be used within 14 days of its generation, but as long as you have the permanent Registration Code, you can get a new key by visiting the Restore Page https://rover.jriver.com/cgi-bin/restore.cgi (more below).

You have ten restores per year, and each one will give you an Install Key that lasts 14 days.  You won't normally run out.

Details are under "Purchase" above.

Thanks for your purchase.

Thanks Jim.  I was actually just coming back here to delete my thread since I received the Restore email and now understand it.  Looks like I accidentally used one "restore" and am down to the cat's 9 lives.  lol

If you have any version prior to MC16, you can upgrade now and receive an MC17 license that will work with MC16 or MC17

Does this mean if I only had MC12 and wanted to upgrade......... the price would be $19?
Just wondering, actually I have MC16, but havent had the time to learn and appreciate all its features!

I upgraded to MC17 without ever having read the forum about it, let alone installing it.  Would like an auto-renewal/auto-mrj-email ability!  Unbeatable price, of course.

Can't believe I started at MC 11.1, this is my seventh major MC revision.

Purchased and downloaded MC17 using the "alternative method" for the upgrade price of $18.98 a while back. Decided I wanted to try the install today, but when I click on the installer I get the following message: Error restoring Media Center License: Unknown error. Suggestions? (Running Windows 7). Thanks.

I just wanted to express my appreciation for the changes made in the last couple versions.  I just upgraded from MC15 to get Blu-Ray support and found that all the tweaking I couldn't do in the past can now be done.  Mostly, I wanted to have movie covers as thumbnails and better organization for TV series, and this latest version has done it beautifully, both in Standard View and Theater View.  They weren't really big issues, but this player is now exactly what I've wanted for a long time.  Thanks so much for the hard work!

Jim,

Have to say, having been a long time MJ & MC owner, this is a bit frustrating.  I just upgraded in August and having to drop yet another $20 is hard to swallow.  I do agree there needs to be a cutoff, but what is that cutoff?  I received an email two weeks ago saying I had 15 days to upgrade.  So, from my perspective, I've purchased a product and in less than 60-ish days been asked to pay for a new upgrade.  That's pretty harsh by any standard.  6-months, a smaller pill to swallow, but most software packages I purchase typically come with at least a year of upgrade protection.

Just something to think about!  You folks do have a great product which is why I've stuck with it, but I do get the feeling of being nickel-dimed ever so often.  Keep up the great developing!

Cheers...

Nobody is saying that you HAVE to upgrade.  MC16 will continue to work (and probably still be worked on) for a long, long time.

I just downloaded the latest MC17 beta version to try this morning.  I had a lockup trying to play a movie and was asked to re-install.  When I did and tried to start MC17 again, it said my trial period expired.  I clicked on the extend trial and received a code.  When I plugged that in, it now says that my 40 day trial period has extended.  Any ideas?
Title: Media Editor Paste Mix
Post by: Riverbear on December 04, 2011, 07:50:19 pm
I have been trying to use "paste mix" from media editor since Media Center 14. It crashes the program. It has never ever worked for me, not even one time. It always crashes the program. I've tried it in Media Center 14, 16 & 17. When are you going to fix this?

Here's what I am trying to do:
A song leads in with drums. The end of the song ends abruptly. I want to fade out the end of the song, and copy the drums from the beginning and paste them into the end and then have the drums fade out. I want the drums to start playing while the original song ending fades out. Media Editor locks up every single time I have ever tried to do this, with any version.

I have read the information on "paste mix" on JRiver's media center wiki site. It gives very minimal information (only 5 lines) and says nothing about whether or not the selection that is on the clipboard has to match the destination selection in size, or how it handles larger clipboard selections, smaller selections, etc... So, I'm not sure it even allows what i'm trying to do.

Some help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm going to agree with some others.
I love MC, and look forward to new releases and new features.
But I upgraded already this year, and you are not rewarding some loyal customers that give you such good reviews.
It seems you are saying to those that use it the most and buy every release - that it is really better for us to not be as eager and perhaps buy every other upgrade.
You are telling us we have to pay the same whether we bought it in the fall, or a few years ago.
It is good you are providing those that have older versions an upgrade path - but you really should reward the keeners that loyally follow you closely.
$50 worth of upgrades on a $50 product should last 2 to 3 years, not just 1 year.

We have to cut it off on some date and October 1 is it.

We begin to offer an upgrade license at a reduced price long before the next version is at a stable release status.

You bought MC16 in February of this year.  Thank you.

MC17 won't be at the same stage until sometime this spring.

Early upgrades were less than $20.  But you could skip a version or two if you like.

I have an MC16 Licence and I would upgrade if I can solve my playing problems with AC3 files (pending since I bought MC16, on 15 and 14 no problems with this file type).
But when I´m not able to test the improovements in MC17 how should I proceede?

Thanks in advance

Hi,
I Installed MC17 next to my current version MC12 and am not able to set up the same playing now - track info display.
I'm using Nightlife skin + Push's Blue Steel II trackinfo with Spectrum Analyser>Stereo Visualisation.
It works well with MC12 but in MC17 the spectrum analyser is not displayed; only a blank section.
Is it a bug or do I have to change some settings?

Hi,

I purchased and installed MC17 last night without any problems, though no sound through my stereo system (dCS Scarlatti 4 box,USB to Upsampler). The sound comes through the HTPC speakers. Cannot change to dCS Scarlatti in ASIO4ALL setup. Changed back to MC16 or Foobar, and all work as set up. Any ideas how to solve?

Is have mc16 and I want upgrate to mc17.

2 questions:

If I unistall mc16 and after I do a new clear installation of mc17. I can pay only the update? or I need pay all program?
If I format my pc can I install only mc17 and the key? this gives me problems? Is needed install the previous key of mc16 if I've formated my pc?

I want unistall mc16 and make a clear installation of mc17 without format. Can I do this paying only the upgrate?
Today, mc17 is beta or is stable?

You do not need to uninstall MC16. MC17 goes to separate program and application data folders and its settings are stored separately. You can fully uninstall MC16 anytime later.

The advantage of keeping MC16 installed is that MC17 can automatically import the media library data including playlists and statistics and most of the old settings (some of the settings have changed and may be reset.)

You can purchase the upgrade if you have MC16 installed and registered on the same OS instance.

Naturally the MC17 registration is always valid after you have purchased the upgrade. You can reformat, install Windows, install just MC17 and register it. The key file is valid only for 14 days (you probably already knew this), but you can get a new key here: https://rover.jriver.com/cgi-bin/restore.cgi

I'd say that MC17 is a stable beta, but from time to time a new or changed feature may be slightly buggy for a little while.

EDIT

In my opinion MC17 is not more buggy than MC16. MC17 has fixes to some minor problems that are still present in MC16.

Try again and let it go for a while.  MC17 is about as stable as MC16 now.

But the answer is yes, your MC17 license will work with either MC16 or MC17.

I am having much trouble with Media Center and transferring music into/out of iTunes. I uninstalled Media 16 then went to the restore page and put in my registration code. I then got an email with the install key with an .mjr extension. I do not know how to open .mjr extensions. How do I get the install key?

The mjr file will be run by the currently installed version of Media Center if you double click on it in Explorer.  It is the Install Key.

Hello, I'm a super Noob and I need to ask a question that may seems dumb.
I have MC16 only for music, don't care about any other features. It's setup and working perfectly. I love this thing, it plays my DRM subscription music from ZUNE.
For someone in my situation, will I hear any improvement in the audio quality going to MC17? I've bypassed the internal windows 7 mixer and I'm using WASAPI and no DSP effects or up-sampling just pit perfect audio from the PCI sound card via toslink to my Marantz receiver's internal DAC.

Does it make any sense upgrading at this point.

I'm sorry if I didn't clearly define my question.
I was wandering if the audio part of MC17 was improved. The program code, technology or what ever they call it.  Take video for instance, MC17 can now do Bluray and you might see an improvement in picture quality from all video sources (TV, DVD, AVI, MKV) with better color, sharper image, etc.
I'm afraid of installing MC17 on the same box as MC16 (that's where my audio files are) because with my luck something will go terribly wrong.

There have been a number of audio related changes as I recall.  Here's a full change log:

Here's a quick new feature overview (don't know how up to date it is):

There's shouldn't be any issues with installing MC17 as a trial. Backup your current library, and let MC17 import the MC16 library.

It would have allowed you to upgrade for $26.98.  And it would have found your MC16 library and made a copy of it to use.

You can keep both installed until you're satisfied with MC17, then uninstall MC16.

I have media centre 17.0.147
I've downloaded MC17 but a lot of my cover art was missing so I thought I'd delete the library and start again. I tried to import my audio library but it only picked up one file. I then uninstalled it, removed all references that I could find to jrivers on my pc, rebooted my PC, then downloaded the latest version of jrivers. I still don't have an audio library. I looked in help and tried to 'enable shell integration' in general of options then reboot but it makes no difference. How can I force jrivers to scan for my library again. If not is there any way I can delete everything regarding jrivers from my PC and start again with the location of my music and cover art entered before jrivers starts to scan.

i bought media center 16 last year in summer and today i downloaded 17 just to see, if it is worth an upgrade.
after i installed it i saw in the help section :

Produkt:
Media Center 17.0.165 (registriert)

is it normal? i read that upgrading will cost arounf 50$, but it seems that my version registered itself for free.

any advice or confirmation would be nice.

Welcome.  If you purchased MC16 after October 1, 2011, you received an MC17 license that will work with either MC16 or MC17.

The cost of upgrading would normally be $26.98.

I just tried to purchase the license for MC18 at the pre-release price, when I clicked to purchase, it charged me full price (I didn't complete the purchase). I think there was some fix for this somewhere, but I couldn't find it. I entered my 25 digit registration code instead of my 6 digit access code, which is what I thought was requested. I tried it twice, in case #'s were incorrect, they were and I got the same result. Spending full price to upgrade would be insane-I'm actually happy with it as it is, but for not-too-expensive a price, I'd be curious about the upgrade.
Thanks
