Title: Outstanding issues *updated for build 20.0.57*
Post by: InflatableMouse on November 27, 2013, 02:27:20 am
Editors comments: This is a list of outstanding issues.
We can remove stuff from here as they are resolved. This is not intended to be for feature requests.

Updated for build 20.0.57.

I'll try to maintain this list as new builds are released. I think it would be good if others can test these too to confirm them. Right now I don't know if some of these are local to my machine. Edit: I'll help... Bob

Buglist (tested on Debian Wheezy 7.2 XFCE 64-bit):

1. The BROWSE-buttons won't start the browser
2. Not possible to access the burning device
3. Resizing windows unusable:
 - window operations causing the window to flicker (background turns white, no contents visible, sometimes for long time)
 - Dragging a window behaves erratically, it jumps all over the place, suddenly moves off screen, etc etc.
 - MC's button on the taskbar dissapears making it impossible to get the window back (right click, maximize)

4. Renaming (moving) files by setting up base path and rules generating wrong paths:
Base path: The base path has no effect at all
Rule: Instead of replacing the existing path, the rule is added to the end of the existing path.
Also, you have to enter the backslash instead a slash to generate a subdir.

5. Importing a database which was generated under Windows will not allow you to change to UNIX path declaration (would be nice to have)
 - I actually tried importing my Windows MC database and MC crashed. After restart the DB wasn't imported.
6. Sometimes SACD ISO's don't import while the same ISO imports on Windows without a problem.
7. Copy/Paste is only working via workaround (need to find link to bob's post)
8. Browse button doesn't work in dialogs that have one (import, etc).
9. Graphical glitches with skins: Text (time etc) falls outside its area, spectrum analyzer doesn't show or falls outside its area, some skins the progress bar falls inside text area along with the DSP and repeat buttons. Purity is missing close button.
10. Tooltips prevent mouse and keyboard operations (renders Search inoperable as it pops up a tooltip during typing).
 - Tooltips (and menu's and popups) cause the main window to go to the background. When transparency is enabled for background windows, every time a tooltip (or menu) pops up it causes the main program window to go transparent. See here (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=85515.0).

11. Main window does not show correct mouse cursors for move, resize, popup window do.
12. MediaCenter crashes randomly during longer playback time. Seems to still be happening now and then with 108.
- MediaCenter crashed while playing with DSP equalizer (not always, not easily reproducable)

13. In DSP Studio, Output format, the sample rate pulldown is very narrow.
 - related: when moving the window while a pulldown is open, the pulldown will remain behind (it should close when clicked outside of it).
14. Drag and drop mediafiles to MC isn't working.
15. Ratings don't show and can't be changed.
16. Tagging pane is broken;most fields can't be edited.
17. Fill properties from filename includes entire base path with the first field in the rule; The rule [Artist]/[Album] on the path /home/user/music/abba/hits will set [artist]  as /home/user/music/abba. (workaround is to add the path in front of the rule, ie /home/user/music/[Artist]).
18. Bitstreaming DSD is not working, track is simply skipped after a second of silence.
19. Output format as DoP or DSD native in DSP Studio plays nothing or static. DAC sees it as PCM (my DAC display should show DoP or DSD).
26. Load Library View isn't working. New Library View does not include items in the Saved Views folder, nor does the Load window show default views.
20. in the top area left mouse button operates as right mouse button (shows context menu).
21. Black on Black pops up message saying it requires Aero.
22. Menu items that don't work:
 - File/Open Media File
 - File/Library/Export to XML
 - File/Library/Backup Library
 - View/Cover View Maximized Panes view, ignoring the task bar (so controls were hidden :P)
23. Using the On Disk (external) menu item under Locate doesn't do anything (doesn't load up a file manager to that location).
24. The System Volume slider doesn't work - always shows as low volume even though the volume isn't actually low. However changing it to Internal Volume displays volume correctly.
25. Options > Tree & View, when clicking on Select font... nothing happens.

Test results:
List completely updated and confirmed on Debian Wheezy 7.3 XFCE 64-bit. Please let us know whether these are confirmed on other systems too, or add your own found bugs and I'll add them to the list.

If I could get a Log from someone with the sample rate switching problem (between songs), that would be great.

Here's my list I've been keeping (feel free to validate/add any of these) when using Ubuntu 13.10 x64.

1. Ubuntu/Unity: You can't lock the running instance icon to the Unity dash so it'll stay in position (and reuse the locked icon) when closed, requiring you to have a second icon in the dash to open MC from the Unity dash.
2. Ubuntu/Unity: When you click on the Manage last.fm account > Connect to last.fm account... link, the default web browser with the authorize request is not launched (but the Information dialog telling you to press OK after authorizing appears correctly).
3. Ubuntu/Unity: Using the On Disk (external) menu item under Locate doesn't do anything (doesn't load up Nautilus to that location).
4. Ubuntu/Unity: The System Volume slider doesn't work - always shows as low volume even though the volume isn't actually low. However changing it to Internal Volume displays volume correctly.
5. Ubuntu/Unity: Options > Tree & View, when clicking on Select font... nothing happens.
6. Ubuntu/Unity: The Browse button when trying to add a folder via media import doesn't do anything. You can workaround this by manually typing in the path yourself.
7. Ubuntu/Unity: Tooltips can sometimes appear too large and distorted.

Out of all of them, I'd have to say number 1 and number 2 are the most annoying to me at the moment.

I'll get you one when it happens but believe it or not, MC's behaving lately ;).

Yeah, it started happening to me yesterday, so I got all ready to report it and whatnot and I can't get it to happen again.  I did, however, have some updates come thru, new kernel 3.13RC3_desktop, mesa, glamor, etc. and a reboot.  Now, of course, I've been iced/snowed in all day waiting for it to happen again....been flawless all day....

EDIT:  Got one, log was big so I chunked off the last lines....I don't think this one was a sample rate change, but I'm not sure.

I think this (playback problems when switching tracks) might have just gotten fixed in 19.0.90. Give it a try!

I can't keep up with all the new versions :P.

I'll check the list this weekend again.

Updated.

Still waiting for someone else to go over the list to confirm them.

Note on stability: I had 1 crash with MC as a client. However, I noticed the log file had grown to exactly 2GB. Could this be the reason it crashed? I cleared the log and its been fine since.

Memory Playback: Is this working as it should? I notice MC is never using more than ~600MB, even with large DSD files.

Confirmed on Debian Wheezy 64-bit. Do you want me to add them to the sticky list?

6. Ubuntu/Unity: The Browse button when trying to add a folder via media import doesn't do anything. You can workaround this by manually typing in the path yourself.

See nr. 11.

7. Ubuntu/Unity: Tooltips can sometimes appear too large and distorted.

I've never seen this. Which tooltips are we talking about, the track info tooltips or the general program info tooltips (buttons, views, etc).

Go for it. :)

Track info tooltips. It's pretty random, usually it works correctly though.

Done.

I turned off the track info tooltips :). Nr. 14 on the list is really bugging me. Even the regular tooltips get in my way. Is that working normally for you?

I attached some screenshots. The first is it showing the tooltip correctly and the second shows the tooltip glitched/resized large. How I can reproduce it is also shown in the screenshots - you'll notice in the correct tooltip screenshot that it displays correctly if I hover upon an item that's been selected. In the glitched screenshot an above song is selected and I've hovered upon another song. It *doesn't* always reproduce that way, but give some testing and see if you can reproduce it. I can at least on Ubuntu/Unity.

I'll get to work on reproducing and verifying the other issues in the list.

I'm afraid I can't reproduce the tooltip issue.

I appreciate you're taking the time to go over that list. Thanks.

I can confirm 1, 2, 5, 11, 14 and 15. When I get more time I'll try testing more. :) Also, found a few new things...

- When starting on Debian, the Media Center window is created small. I confirmed this on clean installs on both Debian Wheezy and Debian Testing (all MC config files removed - clean profile). On Ubuntu this works correctly as MC will start maximized. Debian, however, the window size/location/state isn't apparently saved.

The screenshot also shows another issue on Debian. Look at the top right where Places is displayed. MC is known as Unknown instead of Media Center 19. Next...

Ubuntu/Unity: You can't lock the running instance icon to the Unity dash so it'll stay in position (and reuse the locked icon) when closed, requiring you to have a second icon in the dash to open MC from the Unity dash.

This also actually exists on Debian too (verified on both Wheezy and Jessie using GNOME 3). Add Media Center 19 to your favorites in the GNOME 3 dash, then run MC via the favorite launcher - it opens a second instance/icon and doesn't use the existing icon for favorites. Other applications including web browsers use the favorite icon correctly for running instances.

Regarding the tooltips issue, doesn't happen on Debian but does on Ubuntu so I'd say it's a Ubuntu-related issue.

EDIT: This exists on Debian too...

When you click on the Manage last.fm account > Connect to last.fm account... link, the default web browser with the authorize request is not launched (but the Information dialog telling you to press OK after authorizing appears correctly).

I get intermittent play back with 19.0.94 on Debian 7.1 32-bit running in a VirtualBox 4.3.6 VM. Files play occasionally but most times not.

hello

the dsp at 88,2 kHZ is not stable it changes to 48 kHz
the other sample rates are stable
also when I set it to another maximal rate (like 192 to 96)

keep up the good work.

You guys might wanna consider disabling/removing the Noire Glass theme from the Linux version. Not only does it nag you saying that Windows Aero isn't present (DUH!), it'll actually silently crash at random.

I'm guessing that will require openGL support which is not on the immediate horizon.

4) Renaming (moving) files) ------>  same
Base path: -Same
Rule: same - whether slash or backslash :  MC does the same

5) Importing a database:--->  not tested –
I use MC 19 in a Windows-Guest for tagging and moving Files- Linux MC and Win-MC uses the same drives. When i have tagged and moved the songs in Win-MC – Linux MC runs Auto-Import.

6) SACD ISO's : -------> Not Tested

7) Copy / Paste : ----> It works via autocutsel

8) Browse button:---> same - even if I try to locate (inside or outside MC)

9) Graphical glitches : ------->  in the Blue Steel–Skin it sems to be ok

10) In OpenSuse Tooltips  ok.

Only the DSP – Window jumps in the Background

11)correct mouse cursors : --->  Only in the outer window, the cursor does not change mouse. The windows within MC for example, Options the cursor works correctly.

12)Playing 4 hours – no chrash

13 ) MC does not store the DSP settings.
       Example: Song of 192/24
DSP setting 192 khz -> no change
When I play the song DSP studio changes Output to 48khz 32 bit 2 ch using Alsa (direkt connection)
I put that a 44.1 khz to 48 khz are upsampeld
I play a song as above
the next song with 44.1 khz can not be played because the settings have moved to khz to 44.1 -> no change

14) Drag and drop:---->   same –  If behind the MC window is another window, this program will open the song - eg Firefox. When
LibreOffice   is the rear window, the sound icon appears on my text.
"Play With MC" from the contex- menu of the File Browser goes well
15. Ratings : same
16)  Tagging pane : same
17) not tested
18) not tested i have no DAC
19) Not tested

23. Using the On Disk ------------> same

24. The System Volume slider ----------> I Think, when the „system Volume“ is selcted, no slider needs to appear. then you have to
adjust the volume level with the system-mixer In the Blue Steel Skin the Slider disappears, when System-Volume ist selected

25. Options : -----------> in Opensuse all Menues ok

26. Load Library View ----------> I can save a library view. But I can not select them because they do not appear in the selection

Thanks, that's really helpful.

10) In OpenSuse Tooltips  ok.

Please try again as I've explained it somewhere else but here my description might have been too short to be clear.

In a view with panes, add a Artist pane, select the top one in the list so that when you start typing, it will jump to whatever you type. Resize MC so that a long artist name is cut off in the artist pane. Move your mouse over the cut off name until the tooltip appears but don't click. Now start type the first letter of that artist. You'll see that while the mouse is hovering over the tooltip, any keyboard input is ignored. In fact, even clicking at this point won't select the artist under the tooltip.

At least, that's what's been happening to me after many reinstalls on multiple distros on 2 machines :o.

I would be very surprised if others can't replicate this.

@  InflatableMouse : Ok - I have copied this as you described it - in OpenSuse it is the same.

I have tried this also in a list view:
1 I move the mouse to a song ---> the tooltip appears
2) unless I select the song, no keyboard input is possible
3) When I select the song, the tooltip jumps into the background, but not close.
4) only when I press F2 for tagging, the tooltip disappears in the background.

Tooltips should never get focus. It's on the list. XWindows operates differently than the Mac and Windows in this area.

If you are still on ubuntu 12.04 my guess is that you've got some libraries that are too old.

Update for build 112 :

3)  Resizing the window (with the mouse): It takes 41 seconds (stop watch),until the CPU - activity goes back to 0 %. (without playing a song)
Then you can move the window and MC responds normally to all.

If you change the size of the window with the menu in the Task Bar - Ikon: it only takes about 4 seconds.

New (not tested in 109): When I turn to the MiniView, MC forgets its initial size. When back to default-View, MC has constant at
                                          approximately   300 x 778 pixels.

1. same in Debian wheezy
2. not testet
3. same in Debian wheezy - It works- but it is not perfect
MC starts often with a small window in the middle of the screen. When I close the window and start again, MC remembers the last size.
4.same in Debian wheezy - No selection possible (no pulldown). Entries must be made "by hand"
5) not tested - but not important for me. I've run MC in three versions: directly under Linux - in a virtual machine under Windows - and directly under Windows. For tagging and Renaming I have used until now the virtual machine.
Importing my songs (60 000) takes about half an hour. Creating thumbnails takes a long time, but it happens only once.
I hope that the Windows machines are no longer necessary at some point. Why then import the databases from Windows?
6. not tested
7. with autocutsel (auto start) works without problems.
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=85544.msg584440;topicseen#msg584440 (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=85544.msg584440;topicseen#msg584440)
8. same in Debian wheezy
9. same in Debian wheezy - the only skin in which everything is aligned correctly (also the size of the buttons DSP Studio, etc.) is Purity. Although the Spectrum analyzer appears, but is static in all skins
10.The most dialog windows are properly centered in the middle of the main window. Only the confirmation window jumps into some corner of the screen.
11.Same -- The right cursor appears only after a mouse click
12. -----
13. if a pulldown is opened, it stands alone. You can move any other window under the pulldown. It disappears only when something has been selected.
14. same
15. same
16. this is the first build, where you can tag all fields. Pulldowns see 13)
17. Not testet
18. not tested
26. same
22. same
23. same
24.if system volume is selected, the slider disappears (I think that's ok, because you elsewhere set the volume). If internal volume is set, the slider works well.
25. same
26. the number pad on the German keyboard does not work. All of the buttons Print this:ᄆᄆᄆᄇᄉᄉ
27.Wma works not for me - it is just to hear a crackling noise. Do I need to install additional codecs?

Update 14.03.2014 :

Spectrum Analyzer works now.

I do not know why. Maybe it is related with the fact that I have installed some files related to alsa:

python-pyalsa: amd64 (1.0.25-1), qashctl: amd64 (0.17.2-2), qasmixer: amd64 (0.17.2-2)
libasound2-doc: amd64 (1.0.25-4), mpg123: amd64 (1.14.4-1), libmpg123-0: amd64 (1.14.4-1, automatic)
Title: Re: Outstanding issues *updated for build 121*
Post by: bob on March 13, 2014, 08:59:49 am
For wma, the codecs are downloaded automatically when the first wma file is parsed for tags or played.
They are in ~/.jriver/Media Center 19/Plugins

MC will NOT play protected wma on non-windows platforms.

As far as I know these songs are not protected.
In options -> audio -> Advanced -> configure input plugin there is no wma - Plugin
only dsd; mp3, wav & aiff, flac and mpc.
after several times trying to play wma, MC crashed:

from tail -f /var/log/messages:

Do you see the plugins in the place I indicated?
You could do an ldd -d on them and see if there are any missing system libraries.
If that's not it you could email me the smallest of your files for testing. bob (at) jriver (dot) com.
Thanks.

@ Bob:
I think you mean this library:
/ usr / lib / JRiver / Media Center 19/Plugins/libin_WMA.so
The smallest file is 12 mb.
how can I send you the file?

No, the codecs should be in ~/.jriver/Media Center 19/Plugins

You can email it if your server can handle it. Ours will.

@ bob:

the folder that you mentioned, contains only the following files

~/.jriver / Media Center 19/Plugins/linux_avcodec/libavcodec.so.55
~/.jriver / Media Center 19/Plugins/linux_avcodec/libavformat.so.55
~/.jriver / Media Center 19/Plugins/linux_avcodec/libavutil.so.52

apt-get install created 3 folders:

~/.jriver /
~/Documents /
/ usr / lib / JRiver / Media Center 19 /

I have send you a Massage where you can download the song. ;)

That is all correct. I'll check your file as soon as I can get a chance. Thanks.

WMA lossless. It appears the decoder can't handle that yet.

19.0.129-3 for Debian, tested on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64-bit

New issues discovered:
- Foreign Korean/Japanese/Chinese characters do not display correctly (font problem?)
- Weird window dragging behavior (starts floating around erratically)
- Window snapping does not work

The character and window dragging problems are my two biggest annoyances with the current Linux version  :P

Confirmed same bugs also in Ubuntu:
7, 9, 14, 15, 22, 23, 24, 25  (haven't tested the other issues)

EDIT: do NOT display correctly, I accidentally a word :)

Has a discussion about the required font and what file in which it's found in debian.
People likely can help you with ubuntu however we build for debian i386 and anyone installing on a different OS/distro is in the YMMV category.

Yea I missed a word, the foreign characters do not display correctly (just displayed as boxes)

I did some more testing and I believe the fonts are installed correctly (xfonts-100 and xfonts-75). I can clearly see that the application looks better/different with the fonts installed. As I understand the font used is Lucida? I have checked that with both "Lucida Sans Unicode" and "Lucida Console" font, the foreign characters (for example レーザービーム) display correctly in other applications. Also I tried to rename songs, but with a Japanese Kana keyboard layout, all characters typed into MC show up as boxes. But if this is an Ubuntu specific problem, I will create a new thread about it.

I have now installed Debian Wheezy on a VM for testing purposes (I made sure also to install all the dependencies), the problem with Asian characters not being displayed is the same there. The window dragging appears to work better in Debian however (Gnome classic).

I want to say something to the German Desktop-Keyboard (101 keys):

On the main keyboard, all letters are displayed correctly.

But all keys of the Num- Block provide a square, as described by Sesam.

This happens  in MC 19.0.129-3 so and all versions before.

It looks like the font we are using doesn't have the East Asian characters, I'm not sure about what's going on with the Keypad in German. I think that may be unrelated.

The only fixed (pcf) font I can find with the East Asian characters is the -gnu-unifont-medium-r-normal--16-160-75-75-c-80-iso10646-1
It works but is not so pretty since it's monospaced and it also takes up more real estate.
I'll likely implement this as a font choice thusly:
Choices:
Lucida
Unifont
User Defined font string.

I'm not sure what that means (about the fonts) but I was hoping that eventually we get a choice of fonts that are anti-aliased?

I think that's very unlikely.
We do all of the layout using none of the platform features. It's how skins work across platforms, etc.
The fonts aren't even used directly.

Ouch. That would be a real bummer  :'(.

User Defined font string.

Would that allow Sans too?

I figured that Lucida does not support all the odd shift-jis/ansi etc.. east Asian characters. That is kind of expected as few fonts on Mac or Windows support them all either. In most cases not necessary to support either I believe, as most people with these needs use UTF-16 tags.

I think that the problem here is different (related to unicode/UTF-16?). Because the tags in the files I use should be in Unicode. I checked out the Lucida Sans Console, Grande and Sans Unicode font in character map. And they do display correct Hiragana and Katakana characters (and lots of other script types):

The user defined font string would allow any of the pcf fonts to be used.

Personally, I prefer them to the fuzzy looking anti-aliased fonts.

The beauty of true-type/open-type fonts is that you can tell your font renderer how to draw them. Don't like font hinting (anti-aliasing)? Turn it off!
No such choices in PCF bitmap fonts :(

I guess we're not using fontconfig/freetype (yet) to draw fonts then, eh?

You edited your message!  ;D

I think font rendering and quality is very important for the user experience. I couldn't live without anti-aliasing and the first thing I do on any linux install (even if it supports anti aliasing and hinting out of the box) is install the Infinality bundle (http://bohoomil.com/). Makes Linux look even better ;).

I hate absolutes  ;)

We are at the same level as xterm with regards to how we use the system resources. I don't think there are any options other than pcf at that level.
