playback order on handheld device
« on: September 02, 2003, 08:19:12 pm »

just purchased MC9 yaaaaay </kermit>  :D

Now my burning question to you, the peeps:

How do you get transferred albums to play in the correct order?  Without changing the song titles?

My example:  I typically dump a CD like this: CREATE/USE EXISTING ARTIST DIRECTORY,       CREATE ALBUM DIRECTORY,    CREATE INDIVIDUAL SONG FILES USING NN - SONG TITLE.mp3    where NN is the sequential track number on the CD.

So I get (for example):

E:\Self  (directory)

E:\Self\Breakfast With Girls (directory)

E:\Self\Breakfast With Girls\01 - The End Of It All.mp3
E:\Self\Breakfast With Girls\02 - Kill The Barflies.mp3
E:\Self\Breakfast With Girls\03 - Meg Ryan.mp3
E:\Self\Breakfast With Girls\04 - Suzie Q Sailaway.mp3
E:\Self\Breakfast With Girls\05 - Uno Song.mp3
E:\Self\Breakfast With Girls\06 - Paint By Numbers.mp3
E:\Self\Breakfast With Girls\07 - What Are You Thinking.mp3
E:\Self\Breakfast With Girls\08 - Sucker.mp3
E:\Self\Breakfast With Girls\09 - Breakfast With Girls.mp3
E:\Self\Breakfast With Girls\10 - Better Than Aliens.mp3
E:\Self\Breakfast With Girls\11 - It All Comes Out In The Wash.mp3
E:\Self\Breakfast With Girls\12 - Callgirls.mp3
E:\Self\Breakfast With Girls\13 - Placing The Blame.mp3

..and this is good.  from a filesystem standpoint.  I always know what the album order is.

But when I copy these over to my portable, I get:

Artist: Self   (good!)
-->Album: Breakfast With Girls  (good!)
----->Better Than Aliens
----->Breakfast With Girls
----->Callgirls
----->It All Comes Out In The Wash
----->Kill The Barflies
----->Meg Ryan
----->Paint By Numbers
----->Placing The Blame
----->Sucker
----->Suzie Q Sailaway
----->The End Of It All
----->Uno Song
----->What Are You Thinking

(no no no no no.)
The Handheld sorts alphabetically, but I want it to sort albumetically (new word for y'all).   What's more, I don't want to have to change all my mp3's to have Song Title tags starting with NN - (which would solve the problem.)
That is to say that I don't want to have "Meg Ryan" show up as "03 - Meg Ryan" on the playlist.

Ideas?

Do I have to create album playlists? that would seem extraordinarily silly in this dayandage.

Cheers!

Pet,

If  your player orders playback by the order in which the songs were transferred, the solution is to select 'Show Queued Files Only' and adjust the send order. This does not appear to be the case. If the portable is ordering the songs alphabetically, you will either need to rename them, or I could create a custom plugin which would rename them but make it transparent to you, but this is not a great option.

What player is this? Nomad NX?

This is Nomad III.
I supposed I'm surprised that this isn't an issue with other people!  Is the CLabs Nomad III the only portable that ignores feed-in order and instead re-sorts alphabetically within an album?

I have not heard much about this issue, although someone mentioned it recently in regards to MuVO Nx.  The solution is for me to rename the files (not the tag info) to some alphabetical name that will respect the ordering. I can add this in the future.

Steve,

Yeah, that was me (about the MuVo NX).  I eventually abandoned the MuVo because it didn't have an FM tuner. Instead, I picked up a iRiver iFP 380T.  It's really great. Any chance of a plugin for that?

HeavyPet@Work,

Until such time as a plugin is developed for MC, there is software called Notmad Explorer that is supposed to help with that. Here is the link:

http://www.redchairsoftware.com/notmad/

Unfortunately, I do not see the Nomad III listed on their site as being supported. It might be worth it to contact them and see if it is supported.

Hope this helps,

Crow,

In regards to the iRiver iFP 380T, this may be possible in the not too distant future.

Steve,

Thanks, it would be great.  The software that comes with it is pretty good, and I can create playlists in MC and then just drag-and-drop the files into the other software.  It works OK, but a plugin for MC would be excellent!

Thanks again

Thanks Steve.  But I think, if I understand you correctly, that I already have the filenames "in the right order" on disk, since I rip them to be named with the track number first.  (i.e. "07 - Meg Ryan.mp3" is actually the filename there on disk.  However, the title in the TAG is simply "Meg Ryan".)

Or do you mean something else?

HeavyPet,

My solution can work for the Muvo, but you are right, it will not work for you because of the way Nomad Jukebox is ordering your files.  To solve your problem I will need to assign the MC Filename to the Nomad Title parameter. Currently this is set to the 'Name' tag from MC. I recall that customers definitely requested the way it is currently, so I should implement this as an option not a default. The other issue is that if you switch to the new way, your Nomad will have two copies of the files unless you delete them all and start clean.

HeavyPet and others,

There is a new Nomad Jukebox series of Plugins posted (v 9.0.23).  If you right click on 'Nomad Jukebox' you will see an option for 'Select Title Field'. This allows you to select either MC's Filename or Name field for the Nomad 'Title' field. The default is 'Name' as it had been but you can opt for Filename to get the Album play orders straight.

Thanks for the suggestion.
