Here's the scenario:  I've been listening to albums with Shuffle on (the icon next to the position bar).  Next day I want to listen to an album with Shuffle off.  The icon is still, blue (in my scheme) for shuffle on, as it should be.  I set it to off.  It's off.  Start to play the album, icon switches back to blue and shuffle is on.  Set it to off, and the icon indicates it is off.  Tracks still play random.  If fine if I now select for the third time.  Needless to say, while listening to classical music this is very annoying.

It's working fine for me.  Keep in mind that turning shuffle off won't unshuffle the tracks you have in Playing Now.  So you'll still be shuffled until you start another list.

Matt brings up a good point...when I first got MC I assumed shuffle worked like it did on my iPod (played random) but it's the actual "physical" list that is shuffled, so turning off shuffle does not restore any sort of "order"

Other than that, all I can say is I cannot reproduce your issue here either

This has nothing to do with the tracks having been previously shuffled.  Here's the exact situation, which is very reproducible.

1)  I've been listening to a playlist, set to shuffle (blue crossed arrow icon).

2)  Completely quit Media Center.

3)  Later in the day, I restart Media Center.  I want to listen to an album in order, not shuffle.

4)  I check - there is nothing in "Playing Now" cue.

5)  Uncheck shuffle.  It's off.  There's nothing in the "Playing Now" cue.

6)  Double-click on the first track of the album.  Shuffle is automatically rechecked, and is shuffled in playing now.

7)  So, uncheck shuffle, clear playing now, go back to album, click first track, and it plays unshuffled.

So this is how this is supposed to function?  I can't select and album then decide if I want it shuffled or not before starting to play it?

I can't address the bug you are describing.  Hopefully someone else can reproduce it.  I'm responding to something specific below....

I find "shuffle mode" in almost every player I've ever tried to be confusing and often inconsistent.  So I never use them, except on dedicated hardware players.

Luckily, MC has numerous ways of doing shuffling WITHOUT EVER TURNING ON SHUFFLE MODE!    As an example to answer your question above:

Click on an album to select it.  Right click.  Select More Play Options > Play (shuffled).  Voila'.  The album is added to Playing Now in a random order.  You can also shuffle Playing Now any time you want.  For example, add 2, 3, 4, or more albums to Playing Now.  They will appear in order.  Now select Player > Shuffle > Reshuffle.  Now all the tracks you just added are mixed together in a random order in Playing Now.

What if you've been listening for a while, you're on track 30 of 100, and you want to add in *another* album and shuffle it into the mix?  Add the new album to Playing Now.  It willl appear in order at the end of the list.  Now select Player > Shuffle > Reshuffle Remaining.  That shuffles all of the tracks below the one you are listening to, but doesn't mix the ones you already listened to!  Brilliant. 

Reshuffle and Reshuffle Remaining have keyboard shortcuts too so it's fast and easy:  Control-R and Control-Shift-R respectively.

Playing Now is amazingly well done and it's ability to be shuffled on the fly like this is something I use extensively.
