Tag lost in version 21.0.23
« on: November 20, 2015, 04:29:24 pm »

I have tagged my classical music with the custom tag 'Work' e.g. Piano Concerto 5. I believe in the previous version of MC21 I was able to see this 'Work' tag in the right-hand tagging panel as it proved really useful in being able to re-tag several of my albums of piano music collections. If I look at the file in Windows explorer and open up the tag editor my 'Work' tag is there, both in flac and mp3 files. The other tag I customized was one called 'Style' as in Instrumental or Concerto - this tag still shows in the Tag Panel. Is there something I'm not seeing/doing that could bring my 'Work' tag back?

I was going to reply, and then I realised you said "right hand tagging panel". So you aren't talking about the Tagging Action Window in the left navigation bar. You have set up a customised panel for tagging I assume?

Could you post a picture of what you are using for tagging, maybe with a description of what you have set up?

Your tags are all still going to be there. It seems a bit strange that an update to MC21.0.23 has caused one to drop off the display. But nevertheless, with more information, someone is sure to help.

maybe you inadvertently changed the display ssettings of the tag window?

Try clicking the tiny icon in the top left and choose "also show" and your field [Work]. The tag window can be "view" dependant also, which might explain this.

In anycase if it is in the tag its not lost, I'm sure its something simple like that :)

Hi RoderickGI, Apologies - you are perfectly correct: I don't know why I wrote right-hand navigation panel when it is the left-hand one. For tagging I use Mp3Tag along with dbPoweramp tagger in Windows Explorer. Thanks for your suggestion Arindelle - I have followed you advice but my 'Work' tag did not appear.
I have attached a screenshot of the file tag plus the MC21 in the background - sorry if the resolution is not great! The 'Work' is the bottom tag in the explorer window and does not show up in the MC21 panel.

Just to be clear, this is what I meant

If this doesn't work, you might have set the tags "to show In current View" (the field work would have to in a column) or set to "show with values" (the track should be highlighted or it won't show.

Also this is not a global setting. Every view can show tags differently.

PS -- I'm assuming you edited your tag [Work] in JRiver and are using dbpoweramp to show that it was written to the tag. If your field work was tagged externally, however, you might have to re-import with the option to update the tags checked. If this is the case you can also write the tags into the library from the files, but I'm guessing this is not your issue??

A couple of relevant points:

1.  If you tag files externally, using non-standard tags like Work, you have to create those fields in MC's database before MC can see them.

2.  If/When you update tags using external taggers, MC won't see the changes unless:
A.  You have update for external changes enabled.  OR
B.  You run "update library (from tags).

3.  MC is an EXCELLENT tagger!  I no longer use anything else, as MC is so good at all of the tagging tasks that I do.

Thank you for all your suggestions and comments, folks.
I have solved the problem by referring to your posts together with some other posts from the Interact archive. I discovered that this upgrade erased my customized tag which had been present in the previous version. So I went into Tools/Options/Library & Folders/Manage Library Fields/Add New Field and added 'Work'. I then did a bulk 'Update Library from Tags'. So it is sorted now thank you.

For future reference:

I'm not sure how an upgrade would have erased your library fields, unless you started with a fresh new library and imported all of your files again.

The easier and more complete way to do it, is to make a Library Backup on the old version, then restore that backup into the new version.  The backup contains EVERYTHING in the library:  All fields (custom and stock), views, playlists, even settings.

No problem. I just didn't want to write a response that wasn't relevant if you were talking about something different.

It looks like the gentlemen here have provided some excellent assistance, and now you have the problem solved. Great!  :D
