Author Topic: Start Position playing in-progress recorded TV inconsistent (steps listed)  (Read 5861 times)

In theater view, I am sometimes seeing an issue when watching an in-progress recorded TV program: after selecting the show from "shows" (not from the guide), the show does not always begin playing at the program start time - once in a while it begins playing at the current time (live).

Anyone else?

Still have the problem then? http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=101046.0

Worked out any set of conditions that make it happen yet?

Only that it seems to happen most frequently on recordings in progress. Pretty basic use: try to watch a recording that is in progress - sometimes playback starts at the beginning, sometimes at the current recording position.

I'm having this too but I haven't found the steps so that Yaobing can reproduce it.  It's only a sometimes thing.

I found steps to reproduce the issue. It happens when you start watching a show that is in the process of recording, press Stop, then start watching the show again while the recording is still in progress.

I'm sure they could be simplified but here is what I have:

Schedule a half hour recording.

In theater view, with a remote control:

After the recording process has begun, wait several minutes, then select the recording from the list of recorded shows using cursor buttons and OK. Choose "Watch" from the menu. The recording will play from the expected position at the beginning.

Press the Stop button.

Back out of the menu until all recorded shows are in view again.

While the show is still in the process of recording, select the same show again using cursor buttons and OK. Choose "Watch" from the menu. The show will play from the live recording position rather than from the last-viewed position.

Hope this helps-

I edited the topic line to note that I found a series of steps to reproduce the issue.

This one always gets me and my wife while watching the news at breakfast or dinner, starting viewing the recording as it is still in progress. It starts out fine, the we press stop while the faucet or microwave is going, then try to play again and the viewing position has jumped away on us.

I believe I understand what is happening when you use the steps you described.

MC uses a Bookmark to decide where to start playing from. There is a setting in Options to define whether it will be at the start of the recording, or at the start of the scheduled program.

When you first start to play the recording, the Bookmark is probably at the beginning of the scheduled recording. But as soon as you start playing the program, that Bookmark is lost, and won't be used again. Whether a Bookmark is placed at the point you stop the program then depends on how long the program is, and whether you have progressed far enough into the program for MC to decide that you are no longer "at the beginning".

The Bookmarking article in the Wiki describes the process.

I suspect that either an in process recording cannot have a new bookmark set (I think I have seen this), or because the program is in process, it is short, and that breaks the bookmarking rules. I'll leave it to Matt to comment on whether those could be the issue or not. But for me what you describe is almost expected behaviour, given the MC bookmarking process. Possibly that process could be improved for examples like this.

If this is the only instance of the problem, could I suggest that you Pause the News or other program rather than stop it, if you are going to restart it shortly afterward, and then just Play again when all the noise has stopped?

Yes, that's what we'll do, thanks. I believe this may be the only mechanism that produces the issue.

I saw the fix, thank you Yaobing!

Since I was never able to reproduce the same behavior you described, I am not sure if the fix in the latest build will do the job.  So please test it.

In fact, I found another bug related to bookmarking that may be relevant to what you experienced.  That fix will come out in a few days.

That seems to have fixed my issue, at least on the first test :)
