Repoint library to new file location?
« on: May 14, 2016, 11:24:47 am »

Hi,

I've just replaced our dying media server with a QNAP NAS, and copied all of my music files to it (with the same folder structure). I have two workstations that each have their own separate libraries pointing to the same set of network files.

According to this http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=35496.0 it used to be easy to just replace the path text with a new path, but that option is no longer available.

Can someone tell me the simplest way to do this? I know I could move files with "Rename, Move & Copy Files", but that would only update the library on one of my workstations. (And it would take an unnecessary long time since the files have already been copied to the new device.)

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Actually the Rename, Move, and Copy tool *is* what you want to use.  ...and it will run almost instantly for the task you want.  The key is to use RM&C in "Update database" mode.  This mode doesn't actually do anything with the files.  Instead, it only changes MC's internal database pointer to point to a new file location.

http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Rename,_Move,_and_Copy_Files#Modes

I'd suggest using the Find & Replace template for this task.  That way you can easily change something like c:\music to M:\ or whatever your new drive is named.

Here's an example of that:

Oh, you probably want to make a database backup before you start.  Just in case.  File > Library > Backup Library .

Good luck!

The wiki has a topic called Moving Files.

Jim,

With respect, the "Moving Files" article is marked as outdated.  It contains old information that no longer works.  It's also not very tailored to the OP's question.

Maybe I should work on that article some to improve it.

Brian, thanks much. That worked perfectly.
