Printing Images
« on: August 09, 2003, 09:34:30 am »

Am I right in thinking there is no way of printing an image from the library in MC9.1? Ive been searching for this, but it seems that the File/Print menu only prints out library details.

I don't think there is a way to print photos from within MC...  and I've got to wonder (aloud) that it's a good thing.  I like the concept of "All Media.  One Interface.", but there's a point where the "jack of all trades" becomes a "master of none".

I use Photoshop Elements to print the photos in the MC library - by using the Send To (external) command.  This lets me do a quick crop and resize (to get the right print dimensions), as well as any one-click touch-ups (the autos...  auto-level, auto-contrast, etc.).

At a minimum, MC would need to take a specified resolutation (pixels per inch) and a final document (printed photo) size with perhaps a constrained ratio, and resize the image pixels accordingly.

Scott

Thanks. This was the first time Ive tried this. I too generally send to Photoshop Elements, especially for 'proper' printing to photo paper etc.

In this case Id just put new ink cartridges in my printer and I just wanted to print a test photo to check everything was OK. MC was open, so I tried from there.

I agree that all the processes of cropping, colour adjustment etc are out of scope for MC. But I was mildly confused that there was no way of printing library items. I dont have a digital camera (well, Ive got a Blink but that doesnt count), but it seems to me that if MC is being promoted as a way of connecting to your camera and managing your photos, printing is a logical operation that goes with that. Elements is an editor not a photo organiser. I suspect that MCs competitors in this area have a print function, but Ive never tried any. Apart from Elements Ive used the Win XP photo printing wizard which works pretty well. It'd be nice to know if I could set up a Send to (external) to that.

This isnt a big deal for me at all, I was just curious. And Im not putting in a feature request.

I had wondered that myself.  Unfortunately, the Photo Printing Wizard is a dll (photowiz.dll)...  I wonder if there's an API that JRiver could use to access it?  If I were a betting man, I'd guess no.

Youre probably right. DLLs are way beyond me.

As a workaround, Ive been trying to configure send to external to open explorer in an images directory. Ive tried various forms of [filename (path)] as a parameter, but to no avail. Any idea if theres a way to get this to work?

Something related to all this I just noticed, and possibly one for the FAQ, is that to use the Win XP Online Print Ordering Wizard, you have to disassociate MC with jpg files. Im sure this is not MCs fault. For some reason the wizard refuses to show jpgs as 'printable' files when they are associated with MC. Go figure. Ive never used this XP feature (or any other digital print service) so I cant comment on whether anyone would want to use it or not...

Who knows - a partnership between JRiver and one of these online print companies might be something for them to explore though.

Abode did this for Photoshop Album and Shutterfly, though it's a bit easier when you own both companies!  I suggested this to JRiver a while ago and JimH said (if I remember correctly) that they'd looked into it, but it wasn't as easy as it might appear.

I use Shutterfly regularly, and unfortunately, they don't support FTP upload...  so I have to go the manual route from within MC (i.e I copy the selected files to a temp directory and then use the Shutterfly utility to upload the entire temp directory).

I'm starting to rethink my decision to go with MC over Photoshop Album...  I think I saw Photoshop Album on sale for $30 last week.  I tell you, my time is certainly worth something!  Tagging is just too inefficient with the current model.  But JRiver keeps teasing me, as the photo integration has gotten much better in the last few months.

sraymond - start a thread with all the features you'd need to have in MC for it to work for you for images - you seem to be one of the most clued up images people here who uses it the most for images. I'm sure they'd love the feedback :)
