(MC22) Feature Requests
« on: May 24, 2016, 03:34:25 pm »

I didn't see a requests topic specifically for the Mac build, so I hope this is okay. :)

1) Mac native menu support or emulate the look of the native Mac menu through the skinning engine. Yeah, this is one of the things people complain about most - that MC doesn't use native Mac-esk menus. So my request here is to either support Apple's system of showing menus or emulate a native Mac-style menu through the skinning engine. If it's the latter it'd need to a) detect if dark mode is enabled or disabled, b) know what font is used for the menus (the size, if bold, the color, etc.) and c) match the transparency of the current native Mac menus (both normal and dark modes). There's probably more to it, but whichever one would be easier to do in MC. :)

2) Support native Mac shortcuts/hotkeys for specific functions. Everything for this request is in this topic. It should be pretty straightforward to do, honestly, if not quick as well.

3) Font antialiasing or something like that so fonts in MC look nice and smooth. I notice on a non-retina screen the fonts are pretty jaggy (using Lucida Grande 11 point) on a 1440p screen - it likely appears more jaggy on 1080p or below.

4) I brought this one up before, but by default on Mac when you hover on one of the top left buttons (close, minimize, maximize/restore) it should highlight (and show) all three buttons, instead of each button. This would match the Mac behaviour - to see it in action just hover your mouse upon the close button in Finder, then MC and look at the difference.

Thoughts?

Let me take the opportunity and go on with the requests :-)

5) In DSP, about upsampling to DSD, do that according to the frequency you start with. I mean: if you start from 44.1, 88.2, 176.4 etc the target is 5.6 Mhz while if you start from 48, 96, 192 etc the target is 6.1 MHz

Thanks,

This type of request would likely cover all MC builds (Windows, Mac and Linux). I'm aiming for this topic to be Mac specific. ;)

There's probably more to it, but whichever one would be easier to do in MC. :)

In addition to this one, there seems to be an issue on the Mac build where multiple menus can show and overlap. This would also need to be corrected, so add that onto number one. If you need a screenshot example of this issue, let me know!

I'll add a 6th, specifically for Mac and Exasound DACs.

The ability to use Exasound's Mac ASIO driver directly, thereby bypassing core audio.

On the windows version, you get the choice to use it directly, but with Macs the option is not available and so you have to use it via core audio.  Why? Coz it sounds better, native dsd playback and personally, I'd rather not use Windows, but have to as there are no linux drivers.

A few requests,

7) port MC to IOS so it can be run on an ipad and not be tied to a mac.

.8.) port MC to Synology NAS.

9) Add folder view and import options to IOS remote.

10) be more proactive in upgrading and improving the IOS remote.

11) Reading through the forums there is loads that can be done to improve the look and usability of MC, documentation and setup Wizards would also help as for the novice it is complex.

Again, these are not Mac-specific requests, which is what this topic aims for. :P You might want to post those in this general requests topic: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=104907.0

1. Please add audio streams and subtitles change buttons to JRemote.
2. Tidal, Qobuz and Apple Music streaming services integration
3. More simple non-Windows style view/interface. Audio and Video mode with disabled Image and all other services.
4. Maybe some sound quality improvements or additional audio settings.

1. Please add audio streams and subtitles change buttons to JRemote.

This is a JRemote-specific request, which really doesn't belong in this Mac-specific topic.

2. Tidal, Qobuz and Apple Music streaming services integration

If you do some searching on the forums, you'll see why this won't happen.

3. More simple non-Windows style view/interface. Audio and Video mode with disabled Image and all other services.

There are currently other skins, like Modern Cards which looks pretty good on the Mac, IMO. Plus you can already disable features (including Images) you don't need by going to Options > General > Features and unchecking the features you don't need.

4. Maybe some sound quality improvements or additional audio settings.

Well, so far they've already ported SoX to MC22. :D

Here's the thing:  MC's main discussion area is the windows MC forum.  A lot of the focus of attention is over there.  So the Feature Requests thread in the windows area, is pretty much the general feature requests area.

But this forum, for MC on Mac, doesn't really get much attention.  General feature requests posted here won't really be seen by very many people.  I'm not even sure how often the developers read threads here.  Though they might be reading this right now.

So AD is trying to keep this thread focused on specific things for the Mac version that don't apply to the Windows version.  That way the Mac developers that read this thread will see only Mac specific stuff and be able to focus their decision making on just the Mac stuff.

So please, go post your desires for new features in the Windows forum, or the Remotes forum, or the Networking forum as applicable.  Let's keep this particular thread Mac specific.

I would love to see easy multi-room support via ChromeCast Audio and/or AirPlay.

I know that there seems to be a once bitten twice shy approach to Apple and AirPlay, but I just had to put together a sonos system at home because MC doesn't satisfy my wife's need for an easy/out of the way system in multiple rooms in the house.  I'd happily grab 3 or 4 chromecasts to solve this, or multiple airplay speakers.  The later seems like enough of a standard to build upon.

I think that the three aspects would be:
1. support for these devices
2. linked volume adjustments
3. easy linking/unlinking of zones

+1 for anything that might improve the sound quality with more direct audio path or lower cpu.
Also +1 for all the original Awesome Donkey requests. I think the look is a competitive disadvantage.
Not Mac specific, but please hire a doc specialist and give us a more complete wiki to cover intermediate topics. You'll be glad you did.
Thanks for listening.

Agreed, but how can I tell if my request exists in the Windows version?

That's a fair question.  The answer is (mostly) that the differences between the Mac and Windows versions of MC are documented here:

http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=97363.0

That's a sticky topic at the top of the forum, so it's easy to find later if you need to.

That thread doesn't tell every single detail, but it's a really good starting point.  There are a lot more features in MC that are exactly the same between Mac and Windows, than there are features that are different.  This is why I can advise Windows users very frequently, over on the windows forum, on how to use MC, even though I only use MC on a Mac.  Because the versions are very, very similar.  Just not exactly the same.

Have a good night.

Brian.

Hope this doesn't post twice ? Have tried adding a internet stream,(WQXR.org) and while the station is shown in my browser (Firefox) the station wont play.
MC does have some streams available. But, no classical stations. Would it be possible to add classical streams to the available list?. Would be a great reason to upgrade to MC22 :P.
Thank You

Jim:

Thank you, but I do have my size set to 125% and have changed font to Lucida Grande 14. Even then, the fonts are somewhat jagged. Certainly more so than in other Mac apps. And if I increase size too much, some things in the UI begin to get crowded and/or overfill my screen.

"Improve" (if not "fix") Mobile Device sync. A few specifics:

Allow independent device identification
i.e. I create a "device" called "Fiio X5ii #1" and I can then the actual mounted card as being that card.
Why?

First and foremost, MC doesn't see the same device+card and mac as the same device regularly.

Secondly, allow me to keep the same sync profile even after I upgrade devices (e.g. I go from a Fiio X1 to X5ii, or from Fiio X5ii to X7, or even from Fiio to AK Jr, etc.) or upgrade cards (I started with a 128GB and upgrade to 200GB), or connect the card embedded device then change to loading that card via SD card slot on my computer.

Finally allow me to work on the playlists and syncing behavior when the device is not connected.

Anything that can be done to improve the handheld sync would be great!

This was somewhere else too, but just so you see it here (hopefully), coming in the first builds of MC22:
NEW: When exporting all the playlists, it now asks for a format (m3u or m3u8).

The red button closes the program for sure.  Green is maximize/normal size.  Yellow is minimize (hide) / normal window.

In every version of iTunes I can remember (I have the current version, 12.4), clicking the red button hides it. The program is only closed if you select Quit from the main menu, or right click the icon in the dock and select Quit from there.

You're right. In iTunes' case clicking the red stoplight button doesn't completely close the app. But that isn't the same for every app - some apps do close when clicking the red stoplight button.

It's a convenient feature of iTunes, because it's an app, like Media Center, which you might want to have running in the background while you're listening to music, but not have filling your screen, because you're looking at something else. It's nice to be able to hide it at a single click of the red button, but not close it. I would love for Media Center to have this same feature.

^ I don't get it.  That feature of itunes just hides the main window.  You can do effectively the same thing by using the middle (orange) button on any app, which minimizes the window do to the dock on the right.  Click on the app icon again to show that window full sized.  What's the difference?  The color of the button?

If you don't want it to disappear entirely, you can put MC in mini display mode, which makes it just a little stub with the play controls and currently playing information.  View > Mini View .  Or <Command>2 .

I've only been using MC a few months, so still new to many of its features and still learning. Apologies then if I've repeated anything that's already been dealt with. At this moment I haven't tried the MC22 beta either.

I think MC is terrific and have thankfully canned iTunes for good. I'm now slowly ripping my CD library to FLAC, have acquired a number of hi-res audio files too, and even downloaded some sample DSD to try out. But, like a lot of people, I also possess a huge number of MP3 files in anything from 128 (yeah  ... really) up to 320 bit. My library is a large hotchpotch of different music files.

One problem is that I have multiple copies of some albums, from lower rate MP3 (for my portable devices), FLAC 16-44's, remasters, re-issues and Hi-res versions etc. and it gets a little confusing to distinguish them apart when you view a page of album covers.

I know I could separate these into different libraries, or different library views and some people rename the album, but to me that just defeats the object. The album title IS the album title and should not have to be changed.

It would be great to be able to add a small badge to the album cover which designates the file type/bit rate. If any users are familiar with adobe Lightroom, then that is a excellent example of how this is used. Flac 16-44 albums would then be easily and quickly distinguishable from MP3 320's for example. They could even be colour coded al la Chord Mojo!

Comments & guidance appreciated

If you're interested in some Views based solutions to this, post a new topic about it.  I'll tell you what my experience has been and how you might use views to show you things the way you want to see them.

Thanks for the offer Brian, but I already know how to achiew this with different views. What I like to see however, is all my albums in one album view, but with the album cover displaying a small colured badge to denote file type/bit depth etc. Just like some album covers do with stickers. A simple visible identifier which would be much easier than having to switch between views.

The Views I have in mind put the resolution of the file into the thumbnail text below the album cover.  I think that's pretty close to what you want.  But if you're not interested, or you just want an automated solution, that's fine.

Apologies Brian, No that's precisely what I want, please elaborate. I know I could do this outside of MC and edit each album cover jpeg but that would be pretty laborious.
