Q settings in DSP studio - JRiver Mac 22
« on: April 25, 2017, 10:03:09 am »

I need to use both of the parametric equalizers in the DSP studio to deal with peaks in my room response.  The Wiki says that a Q of approximately 1.4 is a one-octave wide bandwidth, and that as the Q is increased, the bandwidth of the boost or cut is narrowed.

But the Wiki fails to indicate whether the Q setting is linear, logarithmic, or some other value.  In other words, if 1.4 is an octave-wide window, would a Q of 0.7 be a two-octave wide one?  Would a Q of 2.8 be a half-octave wide window?

How does one calculate the effect of a Q setting on the actual frequency range of a boost or cut?

Thanks - Boomzilla

the easiest way is to use something like REW to simulate the effect or change it in jriver while pink noise is playing and watch the effect in the analyser

if you want to do it on paper then http://www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-bandwidth.htm might help
