This is actually an old topic, but now I see some pattern to it (I can dig up some references later):

Portrait images show in horizontal orientation when playing on a MC client and converting to anything other than original size. When playing the same files on the server, orientation is correct.

This happens for some cameras only, and in our "collection" typically the expensive ones (Nikon D200 and Sony a6300), not for e.g. mobile photos. For all the images, tags are "rotation 270" and "orientation portrait" in MC library. I guess Exif info is different from different cameras, but when the orientation and rotation tags are correct, why should there be different playback orientation, and why only on the client when converting?

Something's wrong?

If so, I hope this can be fixed, since phtos are typically shown on a client computer.

I'm on 22.0.97 Windows.

I just had John connect to my library server and he played a couple images with rotation set and it worked perfectly.

So I'm not sure what you might be seeing.

For testing, could you perhaps share a couple of photos that produce the problem, along with your conversion settings?

I have a Nikon D5000 (maybe not so 'expensive'?) and can't reproduce so far either...

I have included one image in different versions:

1. On server, list view showing tags.
2. Image playing on server
3. Client, list view with tags
4. Client, no coversion
5. Client, conversion to JPEG 2560x1600 (or any other conversion)

And here is the actual image file. I reduced the size.
The rotation tag for the original image in MC is set to 270.


As a sidenote:
I don't think I understand how the tags Orientation and Rotation work. I assume Rotation is there to get a 0, 90, 180 og 270 degree rotation, while Orientation is 0 and 180 only? For this particular image, would 0 be to facing right, and 270 be a 3/4 rotation along the clock? But how does MC use the two tags? In combination, or does it populate Rotation somehow when importing an image with an Orientation value, and then ignore it?
