Hi

I have two major issues:

1) I hear front channels mapped to the back (for some movies, I think)

2) on certain movies, some significant portions of the speech disappear. Actually, if I approach the speaker, I do hear some muddy voices... For example, there is a conversation between 4 people, I hear one, and all others' voices are smeared

3) on rear channels, I hear some unnatural delay of effects

Everything is working fine with MPC-HC & bitstreaming

I'm not clear on what you have changed.  I don't know if you are having this problem while decoding bitstreamed content with your pre-pro from MC, or if this occurs when you are letting MC do decoding.  Or some combination thereof.  More details would definitely help.

I started using JRiver for videos just last week, so this was more or less second or third movie with JRiver

JRiver was configured to decode, as it is a default setting.

1) Then you could have your speakers wired incorrectly, to the wrong outputs, or since MPC-HC works, you probably have some channel re-mapping in MC's DSP. Check your DSP, or share details of what is turned on, and what is set in there.

2) Are those problem movies stereo only, or multi-channel? Stereo movies, or TV, depending on the source, can be very poorly down mixed from multi-channel sources. Does MPC-HC really handle these movies better, with clear speech? Again, if they are multi-channel you have some strange channel mapping in MC's DSP, anything could be happening to the Centre channel, which usually carries the dialogue.

3) What is in your DSP? What does the Audio Path show is being done to the source audio when playing a problem file? Do you have some reverb turned on somewhere? Have you selected a Concert Hall sound effect or similar? What are you outputting to in MC, and does it use Direct Sound, and if so, do you have any sound effects added in the Windows Playback device?

As Brian said, more details would help.

1) Didn't use DSP, except for JRSS, which by default is enabled, and I disabled it. But then I re-enabled it. I will try to disable it again

2) DD 5.1

3) Nothing in DSP. It is going via WASAPI to pre/pro on HDMI cable. Not using DirectSound.

To me it sounds like a decoder bug in JRiver. I am using Red October settings for Video

I don't have a lot of statistics, as I didn't use JRiver for movies before. Just a few from the last couple of weeks.
JRiver 21 worked fine. Then I upgraded to v22.

The decoders work fine. The typical reason for such a problem is a wrong speaker setup, or the pre/pro just being confused about PCM input. The first thing to do is to ensure that the MCs speaker mappings match the actual speakers.

Speaker setup did not change for last 10 years :)

Pre/pro maybe is confusing, I don't know what you're sending. It is configured as direct.
As I said, it worked nice in JRiver 21, before I upgraded to JRiver 22, and before I re-enabled JRSS. Although it is 5.1 source going to 5.1 setup, don't know what JRSS should doing in this case.

Regarding MC's speaker mapping - yes, that might be the check I would like to do, where is it?

what output format do you have selected? a screenshot of the output format tab would be useful

that's the one

To debug, simply use the test tones in jriver (in tools/advanced/audio calibration iirc), play a single channel at a time and note which speakers play. Post the results.

If it's a question of your prepro getting things wrong then you could try the 5.1 in a 7.1 container format.

I will try, although it worked fine before

Will do the mic test, in both 5.1 and 7.1

Thanks!

5.1 and 7.1 make no difference

Left track sounds on Right
Right -> Center
Surround Right -> Left
Surround Left -> Surround Right

Complete mess!

Also, same in Windows Control Panel

I will check the cables on the weekend :-(

I remember reading something about the channel ordering being different with some interfaces.  Could michael's HDMI interface have different channel ordering?  Would that be something set in Windows, or something he'd need to change in MC's DSP Studio.

On the other hand, if MPC plays, using this same HDMI interface, with correct channel ordering, then maybe what Hendrik said... Could the pre-pro be mapping channels differently when it gets a PCM signal?  Maybe doing some kind of hokey psuedo surround, not realizing it's "real" multi-channel content?

Lots of questions and theories.  Sorry I don't have any concrete answers.

(1) I checked now the level calibration in the processor
(2) and checked the physical connections of the cables on the rear

Everything works fine. I hear pink noise from the corresponding speaker when using pre/pro setup

Help!!! :-(

Yes!!

Windows Restart resolved the issue!!
Is it indeed an issue with Haswell Intel audio driver

The thread I referenced above suggests there is a dependency on the video rate sent by JRiver..

Seems to be an acknowledged Intel bug

Will try the new drivers

Sadly

But this happened again..

I've ordered a new pre/pro with better PEQ, and will back back to 'bitstream'.
