Update Library from Tags questions.
« on: July 02, 2003, 05:13:31 pm »

I a little confused by the "Update Library from Tags" feature in MC9.  I basically understand it in concept, but I'm unclear what circumstances call for it to be used, and I don't quite get the results I see when I use it.

For example, when I run it on a ripped album in the media library immediately after ripping the album, the sizes of the files all change a bit.  Sometimes the change is only .002 MB, other times it's about .200 MB.  What is causing this, and under what circumstances is it necessary to use the feature in the first place?  Does the small change in file size have something to do with the fact that I'm using the "Store images inside files" option?

Thanks,

Larry

That probably has a LOT to do with it.

When u store images inside of files they all get a lot bigger.

This feature is mainly just for when u update files outside of MC - it allows u to update the MC library to show these new changes. :)

But the behavior I'm seeing doesn't mesh with this.  I'm not manipulating any files outside of MC, but if I run the "update library from tags - when changes are detected," it makes updates -- even immediately after ripping.  This would seem to imply that the library is NOT being updated automatically from within MC -- i.e. if the library was automatically updated when using MC, no changes would be made when using the update feature.

As far as the amount of space it takes to store images inside files, cover art averages about 30K per album.  That's about .6 percent (i.e. about one half of one percent) gain in size if you consider the average size of an mp3 to be 5 megs.  After 6000 songs, this means that you need an extra 180 megs, which equates to between only 3 CD's worth of space.  In other words, using the "store images inside files" option would mean storing 497 CD's instead of 500 on a 30Gig iPod -- less difference than you might think.
