Convert fails on 30 to 50% of the files
« on: September 15, 2017, 01:36:23 pm »

I've been doing a lot of converting lately. I'm currently on the latest beta.

I convert 4 files at a time (quad core, 32GB mem), always flac, some high res, some CD quality. seemingly randomly, a convert fails. When converting 100 files, somewhere between 40 to 60% of them fail. Right now I am seeing 24 failures out of 46. I try them again, and again like half of them fail. I continue until there are none left.

My settings are to leave original, and add destination. Skip existing files or when they are the same (which isn't, I convert to ogg).

I noticed that always (no exceptions!) they fail after reaching 100% after a short pause.

Any idea what is going on please?

I find other threads on similar issues, but nothing really helps me out.

Thanks!

I've experienced this too. I think something wrong with parallel conversions, so I changed it down to 1 at a time. It may be worse if you are writing directly out to a USB stick or SD card.

IIRC, the ogg encoder can only convert one at a time. There is a bug of some sort in the encoder dealing with temp files it creates.

For what it is worth Foobar2000 has no problem to convert multiple oggs simltaneously.

Does it use an external encoder?

Yes it does. Same oggenc2 executable. I have also tried to use the same encoder file which I use for foobar2000 also in MC but it also fails with simultaneous conversions in MC

Odd.
It's been a while but IIRC it had something to do with the way the ogg2enc created temp files during the encoding...

Maybe this is something that can be looked into again? Apparently it should be possible with this encoder to do 4 simultaneous threads without half of them failing all the time.

Thanks.
