Feature request: HDCD and pre-emphasis decoding, please!
« on: September 10, 2017, 03:26:52 am »

Hi,

I find JRiver MC superior to Foobar etc. on every way except on two occasions; the ability to decode HDCD and pre-emphasis CDs.

Can you please include these two methods so that they can be applied on the fly while listening to music.

Now I have to use Foobar to alter ripped CDs and include decoding in new 24bit files. I would like to keep perfect copies of my CDs in ripped format and apply the decoding in real time.

I would also appreciate a real full screen mode in the standard view in Mac OS. Thank you very much.  :)

I had a discussion about this topic with another person here a while back.  I was not able to understand what this person was asking for and why.  I guess you are probably referring to how most Mac applications work when you press the green circle at the upper left of the window?

As far as I can tell, all that does is make the window expand to fit the whole screen and takes away the top menu and status bar.  Is there something else that this mode offers, other than removing the top bar?

I ask because I run MC maximized, touching all sides of the screen fully, with the top bar visible.  I do this all the time.  So when I use MC, I don't see any other apps.  Just like "full screen".  I actually find that the way Mac does "full screen" now, removing the top bar, to be a large negative.  I WANT access to the menus and I like seeing the top bar status areas.  So I never use full screen.

Are you aware of Display View?  How about Theater View?  Both of those go "fully full screen" and take away the top bar entirely.

Huh, I thought Matt was working on getting HDCD working last year. Did anything ever come from that? I actually have a couple HDCDs now. :P

As for pre-emphasis, this *could* be done by integrating the deemph part of SoX somewhere in DSP Studio.

I use a MacBook Pro and while a program is in full screen mode, usually done by clicking the green button on the left upper corner, you can swipe the track pad with three fingers and go from full screen apps to the desktop and other full screen apps. That is how Tidal or Safari work for example. I find this very useful.

Currently when pushing the green button it does not go into the "real" full screen and the three finger swipe can not be done. I hope I make sense in my writing so people can understand.  :)

Hmm, so it's slightly different navigation between other apps and the desktop...  I guess I'm old or something... those new trackpad gestures never made much sense to me, other than the two finger scroll.

I've been using Command-Tab to switch between programs on Apple (and windows) for a really long time.  Works pretty much how I want it to.

I guess I can understand the appeal of this new full screen look.  It appears to you that you have JUST this on your screen, without the top bar.  Maybe that has some nice psychological effect of helping you concentrate on the program you are using.

I'm mostly just rambling because "I don't get it".  That shouldn't influence you of course.  Maybe the JRiver developers can make this happen. <shrug>  It's always up to them.

Exactly. Because running programs in full screen (e.g. basically a new desktop environment) can increase productivity a lot. At least if you use a trackpad and quickly jump back and forth.

Native pre-emphasis and HDCD decoding support would be great.
In the meantime I keep a copy of the original tracks, and made conversions to 24-bit FLACs with the decoding already applied to add to my library.

I don't think it's anything to do with being old, just set in your ways.
My parents are far from being tech literate and it makes using the computer significantly easier for them, since they only have to swipe left or right on the trackpad to change apps and don't have to deal with window management or keyboard shortcuts at all.
Maximizes the available space on a small notebook display too.

It has indeed.  :) But it's also nice to better ignore this very program:

Imagine using a MacBook as a remote control for your living room concert hall at night - when I'd be able to maximize the standard view window (using the Dark Cards) it would look even nicer and better fade in the background (but still be visible enough should I want to fast forward some track ...  ;)

Edit note: removed irrelevant remark(s).

The most important feature of full-screen apps vs maximized windows is that nothing can be on top of them.  They're in their own virtual screen.  This prevents MC from getting buried behind other windows.  This is a big deal - especially if you're trying to use MC for parties.
