Question regarding music graphics on screen
« on: February 12, 2018, 08:25:19 am »

Hi - I apologize in advanced for a very basic question.  I am very interested in buying this product to play my audio files from my computer by ethernet to my living room sound system (Oppo 103 and Marantz 1608).
I've seen screenshots of jriver that show the artwork for the album and a photo of the band in the background with a track list with metadata on the left - here's the question:  will I be able to see that with my equipment or do I need specific brands that have jriver apps already onboard?
The Oppo has their way of showing art and track info as does the Marantz but I really l like the way jriver displays the music so I just wasn't sure how that would work.

Again, sorry for the basic question.  I sincerely appreciate any feedback anyone can offer.
Thanks

Welcome to the forum.  The display on the device is controlled by the device.  So it will be whatever the device does.

That certainly makes sense but I saw a picture on JRiver homepage that caught my attention.  So I guess I'm wondering what device/player shows the data that way?  I've seen that format in a couple of other places as well and it looks pretty cool.
If you hit the Audio page from the JRiver homepage then scroll the pictures to the one of Beatles 1 - that's the look I'm talking about.
If anyone knows, I'd love to hear about it.
Thanks:)

I think you mean this image.  It's from Theater View in MC.

Yes, that is it:)  Is this what I would see with the JRiver software or is this from a different device/player?  If JRiver, what hardware would I need to get this to my tv screen?  Again, I have an Oppo 103 and a Marantz 1608 that both accept ethernet connections from my PC (which is how I listen at the moment to my digital library - usually through the Oppo, but occasionally through the Marantz for playlists, since the Oppo doesn't play them).

By MC did you mean media center?

Thanks for your help with this.

That's JRiver Media Center.

To put JRiver on your TV, you would need to connect a computer to your TV, or to a receiver that is connected to the TV directly, usually with HDMI cables.

PC > TV
or
PC > Receiver > TV

The TV becomes the display for your computer.

Got it....with my pc being in the other room I'm guessing that will be a problem.  I can't run an hdmi cord to the tv from my pc.  I have them direct connected via ethernet cable in the wall but that wouldn't get me the video end, right?

Thanks:)

You should take a look at the Id forum board: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/board,42.0.html

A IdPi or IdNuc attached to your TV via HDMI could be set to boot straight to Theater View. Both devices are low power (esp the IdPi, which is what I use) and can remain always on, so your HDMI 2 or 3 input will always have JRiver available.

So the idPi would give me the screen I'm looking for?  Will it take an ethernet connection and hdmi?  If so, are you selling that or do I buy it from another party - and, if so, do you have a link?
Thanks for all your help:)

Sorry - one more follow up.  Would Raspberry Pi 3 Model B work?  I saw these at Amazon.  Do I just need to buy the SD card from you and connect the Raspberry Pi to my receiver via hdmi  and ethernet and I'm good to go?  Would I need to install a version of Windows on the Pi if I'm only using it for JRiver music streaming from my main computer (I guess what I mean is, will the SD card work alone or do I need to buy an operating system as well?)
Sorry - this is all brand new to me but I'm buying today if the above mentioned will work:)

Thanks:)

I don't think the Pi version supports Theater View.  The NUC version does.

You might also use Panel or one of the other remotes to control playback.  The wiki has a topic on remotes.  Here's the thread on Panel:

https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,105883.0.html

You can try it by entering this in your browser:

MC must be running.

What view modes does the IdPi support? I may have missed this - buy you guys sell the IdPi and sd card so the whole thing is ready to go, plug and  play, correct?  Same with JRiver Nuc?

Thanks

Here's the Id page, with prices:
https://jriver.com/Id/

The IdPi Fully Baked is ready to run.

The IdPi has the rest of MC's views.  It doesn't support TV or Theater View.

In general Theater View is likely too resource intensive to run on any Raspberry Pi, including the IdPi. An Intel NUC is much more powerful than a Pi, hence why it can run Theater View.

Theater View is the full screen view pictured above.

Good info - the Nuc could play Amazon Prime video in Theater Mode?  Outside of streaming my music, that would be the other thing I would like to do.
I don't currently have any version JRiver on my pc - if I buy the NUC with the SD card, would I get a license I could then use to download the version for my pc?

Thanks

Netflix/Amazon Video and streaming services like that in general aren't supported in MC/Theater View. You could probably get Netflix/Amazon Video working through the embedded Chromium engine on Windows-only, but I would not suggest doing that.

The Id comes with a license; however, that license will only work for the Id, so you would need to purchase another license for your PC if you plan to run Media Center as well.

Also, just to clear up some confusion, the NucId does not come with an SD card, and it does not require one. The IdPi is what uses the micro SD card.

I really like the way theater view shows the playlist and album art (with a different band photograph from the net, I presume, behind it).  I would need the Nuc to see this right?  Are their other views that show the artwork on the screen?  I'm assuming you would need the Nuc for these as well?

One other question - all my music is on my pc - if I connect a Nuc via ethernet do I even need JRiver on my main pc?

And if my main pc goes into sleep/hibernate mode will I need to manually wake it up with a wiggle of the mouse before the Nuc could access my files?

Thanks again - you guys are awesome (and patient!)

Scratch the questions in the last post.  I've tried to do a little more research and have the following questions, then I think I'm ready to dive in and give this a try.

1) I currently have all my music on a windows 7 machine in a room away from my entertainment setup but I do have ethernet run in the wall.  If I direct connect this JRiver Nuc via ethernet (which I believe comes with a Linux os) - will it be able to share files easily with a Wndows 7 machine? Not really sure how the two operating systems play togehter.

2) Follow up to the previous - If all I'm doing is pulling music files from my desktop windows pc, do I need JRiver on the windows pc?  Is it advantageous to have it on both the Nuc (obviously it needs to be on that) and my pc to get the best performance?

Thanks in advance

You could use a Windows 7 machine as just a file server.  On the Id, you would need to set MC's auto import options and browse to that network location.

The IdNuc can act as a DLNA Renderer, so any DLNA software should work with it.  MC on Windows would work with it.

I think I've got it - so I don't need MC on my windows machine.  The Nuc can directly pull then play the files from windows.
Last thing - currently I have to "wake up" my windows machine by wiggling the mouse for my Oppo to play files from it via ethernet.
Can the Nuc pull the files from my windows machine while it is sleeping/hibernating or will I have to have the windows machine on all the time (or wake it up like I have to now with the Oppo).
Thanks

I've emailed sales (is sales@jriver.com correct?) to send me a Paypal request for the Nuc - thanks, again, for your help and patience.

You're welcome.  Thanks for the order.

The Windows machine may wake up on its own when you try to access it.  Wake on Lan can be used.
