The Rippingtons won't rip!
« on: June 23, 2003, 08:39:04 am »

I have a weird problem with ripping the Moonlighting CD from "The Rippingtons".

I have recently ripped a total of about 1600 songs from my rock/pop/jazz collection and had few if any problems.  I was using MusicMatch for some, and MC for others as I transitioned off of MM in favor of MC.

However, I got to the Moonlighting CD, and my PC would not process the first song properly; in MC, it showed "Failed" next to that song in the ripping dialog box.  The other tracks apparently ripped OK (finally...with the 'analog' copy setting...see below).  (I was using MC version .180, MP3 encoding at 128K). However, when I played the songs, they were 'empty'.  They showed as MP3 files, several MB in size....but no sound in them.

To make a long story short, I tried ripping that CD on two computers at home (one desktop with WinME and the other a laptop with WinXP), both using version 180 of MC.  I used two different drives on the WinME machine (a CD-RW and a DVD drive) and a DVD drive on the WinXP machine.  I tried all possible ripping settings (digital large buffer to analog), and got the "Failed" message for every option except the "analog" setting...which STILL failed for the first song, and then created 'empty' MP3s for the rest.

So...I come into work with the CD today and try one last time in my laptop (Win2K professional) and the CD rips perfectly the first time, using the 'digital large buffer' setting and 128K MP3 encoding.

What is going on here?!?  Any ideas?  I guess I'm glad I got it done, but I'm still really curious if anybody else has had that many problems with ONE bloody CD.

Had almost the same problems with Hall & Oates Greatest Hits (Rock 'n Soul Part 1). The first track failed to rip about 15 times until suddenly suceeded with 192kb cbr. (All the eleven other tracks were no prob)
But not a complete victory, this track refuse to alter the tag, tried to copy the cover art inside file without result.
It is the only CD out of 250 with this weired behavior and it occurs with different ripprogs ,OS's and computers.
Don't think it's a copy protection, the CD is far too old.
See, you're not alone
