Do Panel/Gizmo/JRemote all transcode? Why?
« on: December 20, 2017, 06:01:51 pm »

Is there some technical reason why a windows client can play audio/video with no transcoding taking place on the Server, but Panel/Gizmo/JRemote all need to have the Server doing transcoding?

When, if ever will there be a MC solution for portable devices that does not require Server transcoding?

If the answer is never - what are people doing? just sending playlists to VLC on your portable devices? How do you do that?

JRemote has an option to not transcode if the client supports the original format. Panel always transcodes and I am pretty sure Gizmo does also.

So there's no CPU load on the Server when using JRemote on an android phone if you set it to not transcode?

Also, in MC I have setup "restrictions" under View>USER. Does JRemote have the ability to "login" as the (unrestricted) Admin User? or login as the restricted User?

It's limited by the capabilities of the targeted device.  Browser support of HTML5 defines a set of formats that are playable.  You could look it up on Google or Wikipedia.
