Rip CDs from an Oppo BDP 105 with MC?
« on: December 31, 2017, 12:21:30 pm »

First post here as I just purchased a license yesterday. Using MC with my Oppo UDP 205 for a DAC and loving it so far but I know there's so much to learn.
I also own a BDP 105 and was wondering if it's possible to rip my CD collection over the network using the 105 & MC. I found a link for ripping SACDs with the 105 but it involves a lot of 3rd party software and looks like it might be beyond my expertise.

Can I only rip CDs using an optical drive from a PC with MC or does it have the ability to rip discs from the 105?

Thanks in advance

Ripping SACDs requires sacd_extract to be used, which is available cross-platform (looks like you'd probably have to compile it yourself for the Mac). I think ISO2DSD is an alternative that is available for Windows and Mac (requires Java to run), so that might be worth looking into. But there's work involved ripping SACDs via the Terminal over the network to get it done - I've never ripped SACDs, but have read those guides.

Ripping CDs (not SACDs), as far as I know, only works with optical CD/DVD/Blu-Ray drives directly connected to a PC or Mac. Whereas ripping SACDs with an Oppo looks like it's done over the network instead. Not sure it's even remotely possible to rip CDs via a player like an Oppo 105 to a PC or Mac if it's directly connected via USB but I wouldn't be surprised though if this isn't possible (lack of drivers, perhaps?).

Thanks for the reply Awesome Donkey. I see I posted in the wrong forum. :P I’m running PC and not Mac, but nonetheless what you mentioned still applies.
I know that they’re completely different formats, but was hoping the 105 could solve my dilemma. My brand new desktop did not come with an optical drive & my Dell laptop doesn’t have one either. I’ve been using a cheap external USB DVD burner to rip my CDs to FLAC with Exact Audio Copy. But the the burner cannot read one of the CDs I was trying to rip. It plays flawlessly on my 105 though. Guess I’ll have to get another USB disc burner if want to rip that particular CD.
     Thanks again

Are you using Secure Ripping in EAC? Is it filling up with red read error squares when ripping until it gives up and says there's been a read error? In that case it's possible the disc might be damaged. I have a few CDs myself that won't rip in EAC due to read errors, but they 'play' fine in other players. I just end up buying an additional copy of the CD(s) and ripping that - much easier and cheaper than buying a new CD/DVD/Blu-ray drive, IMO.

Yes that's what's happening. Disc looks perfect but keep getting a read error.

I think I might be able to buy the album on FLAC, which would be cheaper than another CD.

Thanks
