MediaCenter not storing ID3 tags in CD-ripped MP3 files
« on: December 31, 2017, 02:59:34 pm »

I am using Media Center 23.0.91 on Windows 10. I ripped one of my personal mix CDs in Media Center using the MP3 Encoder > VBR Encoding option. Previous versions of MediaCenter (the most recent one I used before updating to 23 was version 17) would automatically store tags in ripped MP3 files, but that doesn't appear to be happening anymore. Details:

Since my disc wasn't in the CD database, I entered the CD Information before ripping, using the "enter separate information" option because there were multiple artists:

When I look at the ripped files inside of Media Center they appear to have the right information (name, artist, album all listed in separate columns):

However the files as saved on my SSD do not appear to actually contain ANY ID3 tags. Neither Windows, iTunes, nor Mp3Tag can see any of the tag info shown in Media Center.

QUESTION: How can I tell MediaCenter 23 to include tag info in the ripped MP3s? I never had this issue with versions 9-17.

I've had this problem occur intermittently for CD rips in MC 23 Builds > 73 (64-bit).  I have experienced this problem as an intermittent bug that affects Flac rips, and presumably any other format.  I've experienced it as a more general problem with MC tag editor info intermittently not being reflected in the ripped CD tracks.

When the problem occurs after ripping a CD, the metatag info looks fine when viewed in MC on the machine used to rip the tracks, but just isn't there if examined on the same computer in Windows Explorer.  Track names etc., apparently are not actually being updated in Explorer according to the values set in the MC tag editor (e.g., no artist/author name will appear in the Explorer file properties even if they were entered in the tag editor prior to ripping, and tracks are not named in Explorer according to MCs settings - my setting is [Disc #]-[Track #] [Name]) - tracks are instead named 01Name, 02Name, etc..

Unless you look in Explorer at the files after ripping, you wouldn't know - the track metadata info looks normal in MC running on the machine on which they were ripped.  But if examined in Explorer or  imported into the library of another machine running the same Build of MC, the absence of expected tag info is apparent. Also when this occurs, if examined in the MC tag editor on the second computer, all tracks are numbered the same (e.g. every track has "1" as the value in the [Track #] field).

It doesn't seem to affect the ability to edit and update existing tracks - there the MC tag editor works fine and changes in tags are updated in the Explorer file names using Library Tools/Rename, Move & Copy Files as expected.

But when it does intermittently occur on CD rips, it results in the effort put into to trying to edit the tags in MC prior to ripping having been a waste of time.  Instead, it seems one has to manually correct the info in the MC tag editor on the second machine and then rename them as desired through Library Tools/Rename, Move & Copy Files.

I really hope someone will fix this.

Yeah, there's def. an issue with recent 23.x builds, then. I just noticed I still had MC12 installed. Re-ripped the same CD with the same encoder settings and all files have their correct ID3 tags.

I guess I'll just keep using MC 12 for now, although this version doesn't like ripping from one of my CD drives. I have to use the slower drive on MC12, whereas MC23 let me rip on either drive.  ?

There is a right click menu command called something like “Update files/tags from Library”..

Okay so this "update tags from library" is nice to know and all, but why isn't MediaCenter saving tags in my newly-ripped MP3s? I don't know of any options for telling MC not to do this.

I don't want to have to rip my files and then apply the tags separately when previous versions of MC did this automatically.

EDIT: Also, I don't think this would be a permissions issue (in my case), because I'm working with local files in a directory my user account has full access to: C:\Users\(username)\Music. Also, all the files are freshly-ripped and are not read-only.

Exactly!  This is not a permissions problem for me, either, and a retroactive fix to apply the tags after ripping does nothing to address the occurrence of the problem in the first place.  It’s what I have had to do because of the problem.  It is an intermittent problem and goes to reliability and confidence - that when I rip a cd I can count on and get the expected behavior.

There is (also) a setting in MC where you can select if tags shall automatically be written to the files when added or imported, or not. It sounds like you may have this setting turned off at the moment.

For file format conversions to WAV there is also a setting whether to copy the tags to the new file. So if you are ripping to WAV you need to look at this too.

Thanks - I'll try that.  The setting is in Tools/Options/Library & Folders/Auto-Import/Configure Auto-Import.  You're right - this setting was turned off.  I'll see if doing this resolves the problem (which has been maddeningly intermittent).

I am having the same problem with tags when ripping CDs into FLAC format. What exactly is the setting that should be turned on? Is it "Write file tags when analyzing audio, getting cover art, and applying folder-based tags"? If so, I have never had to turn on that setting in past versions of Media Center, and yet this problem did not occur. I would fill in the tag information by hand prior to ripping, and once the ripping was complete, the tags were written to the files automatically. What changed in MC 23?

Specifically, which version of MC are you using? There was a recent fix;

Quote
23.0.94 (1/12/2018)
10. Fixed: File tagging following CD ripping wasn't working
https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Release_Notes_MC23

I recently ripped a lot of CDs to FLAC using MC23.0.95 and tags were definitely written to all files produced.

Update to MC23.0.94, which is the current Public release.  https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,114006.0.html That should fix the problem.

For files you have already ripped that don't have tags, just run "Update Tags (from library)".

Thank you for the link. I am using MC 23.0.91. Curiously, despite being three versions behind, when I check for updates (Ctrl+J), it says "Media Center is to date (23.0.91)". Is it normal for this feature to be so out of date? It looks as if 23.0.91 was released on December 12 of last year.

There's three update channels. You're probably on the stable channel (which is the default channel), hence why you don't see any updates. Switch to the latest channel to get the latest updates. You can switch update channels by going to the Help menu > Update Channels > set it to Latest and then check for updates again. Otherwise you can just visit the sticky release topic on the top of this forum section to manually download 23.0.94.

Thanks for this post; updating to the latest minor release (in my case, 23.0.96) did fix the issue. I just ripped a new CD and all of the tags are in place.

I did have to do Help > Update Channels > Latest in order for the "Check for Updates" feature to detect/download this one.
