MC24 breaks DLNA
« on: June 14, 2018, 01:25:37 am »

MC24 fail in the following DLNA situation:

1) Two PCs are running MC23, connected using DLNA, private Ethernet line. PC1 is DLNA server/controller with a local library. PC2 is DLNA renderer, output to the sound system. PC1 plays a track, PC2 processes it and output. Volume of both PCs synchronizes (Internal Volume). Everythng have been working just fine for about 2 months. Very happy.

2) Upgraded PC1 to MC24, PC2 remains at MC23. No configuration change. When I play a track the following happens:
- Volume in PC1 stuck at zero when I select PC2 for output. Therefore there is no sound.
- After PC1 plays a few seconds, it automatically goes to the next track. Then next track, ...
- PC2 shows no indication it receive track info from PC1. Info area says "Opening...". No digital output as seen in the DAC connected to it.

Therefore DLNA has failed. Frustrated, I installed MC23 to PC1 again. Just like that, everything works.

There is new functionality in MC24 to synchronise audio between multiple Zones, when those Zones are MC installations, such as in your case. As you said "Volume of both PCs synchronizes" using MC23, I assume that you were using linked Zones in MC23? Otherwise, you would only be getting audio out of PC2 when you play from PC1 to PC2.

I think the solution is that you need to install MC24 on both PC1 and PC2 for them to work with the new functionality. You will also need to go through the settings for Zones and Linked Zones, and turn on the new functionality with the setting called "Precision Zone Sync" in "Options > General > Features.

What specific version of MC you are running:MC27.0.27 @ Oct 27, 2020 and updating regularly Jim!                        MC Release Notes: https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Release_Notes
What OS(s) and Version you are running:     Windows 10 Pro 64bit Version 2004 (OS Build 19041.572).
The JRMark score of the PC with an issue:    JRMark (version 26.0.52 64 bit): 3419
Important relevant info about your environment:
Using the HTPC as a MC Server & a Workstation as a MC Client plus some DLNA clients.
Running JRiver for Android, JRemote2, Gizmo, & MO 4Media on a Sony Xperia XZ Premium Android 9.
Playing video out to a Sony 65" TV connected via HDMI, playing digital audio out via motherboard sound card, PCIe TV tuner

Thanks for the proposal but both PCs are not Linked Zones. Audio is output only from PC2, not PC1 and this is what I desire.
Actually the volume slider of PC1 immediately set to zero as soon as DLNA is invoked when I select PC2 as device, before anything is played. (No such behavior for MC23.) Volume slider of PC2 remains unchanged, at whatever position I set it. But beside the volume slider mis-sync, the playback itself fails. It points to internal failure of MC24 DLNA, plus incompatibility between MC24 and MC23 for DLNA.

My apologies I misunderstood what you meant by "Volume of both PCs synchronizes". I now see you are just referring to the volume sliders.

I'm sure some people have used MC23 and MC24 with DLNA between them, but as I don't I can't help with that.

However, your MC24 licence allows you to install MC24 on multiple PCs, within "reasonable use". Could you just install it on both PC1 and PC2? That would probably get around any compatibility problems.
