Black screen in Theatre View
« on: April 16, 2018, 03:33:51 pm »

Hi all.
I've just upgraded to 24.0.15 and upon loading, I get a black screen in theatre view.
I get the message at the bottom upon loading about using cursors etc, but there are no menu options and no background.
I've tried changing the theme, but none appear to work.

If I load MC23, then it works as normal, this is only on 24.0.15

Happy to provide logs or system spec if needed, please advise what information would help.

Kind Regards,
Dave H.

Hiya,
It's ATI Radeon HD 3200 with AMD Phenom 9650 Quad Core, 4GB RAM on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit.

I've only been using the 32 bit version of JRiver. Should I try installing the 64 bit?

theatre view in MC24 has switched to using OpenGL by default, there is now the following option to revert to d3d though I don't know if that is going away at some point soon

Options > Theater View > Advanced > Use Legacy D3D Theater View (Not Recommended)

you can try this to isolate whether it is specifically an opengl issue.

I don't know if 32 or 64 bit will make a difference but no harm in trying. You may also find more in the log - https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Logging

And we have a winner!
Changing it back to D3D has resolved the situation.
I have unticked it and gone through the steps to create a log file. Should I upload it to this thread?

Thank you for your help. We have, at least, a temporary solution, although if D3D is going to be retired at some point, it would be good to get it working with opengl.

Just add the log file as an attachment here, if you zip it first it should be small enough for that.

Also make sure you use the most recent drivers, older AMD/ATI drivers have serious troubles with OpenGL. A HD 3200 is probably on the brink of what we can support as-is.

Zip file attached.
Hopefully it will show something.
I was in tree view, enabled logging, went to theatre view, waited, went back to tree view, saved log, disabled logging.

The log doesn't show anything interesting, unfortunately.
Guess I'll have to break out the box of old graphics cards. I should have some HD3000 series card, hopefully it still works.

Installed on both a laptop and desktop (both running Windows 10) and in each case switching to Theatre View produced an error:

Error starting OpenGL engine
(Open 2.1 or newer (1.1.0 found)

However, when I look to see what version of OpenGL is running it's 3.something on both machines.

It usually only reports OpenGL 1.1 when in software emulation mode, which happens if your driver is faulty or you're trying use it through Remote Desktop, which is not supported.

I got this exact error on my Server with MC24, with Nvidia GTX1060 and the latest drivers (admit, I was playing with dual monitors and chrome remote desktop at the time).

I have reverted back to Nvidia driver version 388.59 due to that and other very strange issues - playing tv shows has frame skipping in non ROHQ & ROHQ, and when dropping out of theater view the entire standard view is covered with a "stuck frame" from a show I watched hours ago. I tried three of the latest nvidia drivers and they were all fubar. Sticking with 388.59 and all is good (chrome remote desktop working, will try adding dual monitors back in soon).

In case it would provide any extra information, I cleared the log, re-enabled it and then restarted the program (hopefully it may provide more information on start-up?).

This was with D3D unticked and loading to a black screen (even though the log appears to try and load the background images).

I could reproduce the problem with a AMD HD3650 on Windows 7, so I won't need anymore logs. I'll let you know when its fixed.

I am having the same problem with OpenGL. It says that I am running version 1.1, but the computer is actually running version 3.1.0 - Build 9.17.10.4459.

I am seeing the Error starting OpenGL engine as well.
I'm running Intel Graphics 3000.
Please advise when error is fixed.
Thanks.

If its reporting OpenGL 1.1, then your OpenGL driver is not installed properly, or you're trying to access TheaterView through Remote Desktop. Always install graphics drivers from the manufacturers website, not through Windows Update. Windows Update drivers are often incomplete.

The black screen on old AMD graphics cards should be resolved in the next build.

Just to confirm I've updated and all is working now without ticking the legacy D3D.

Many thanks for fixing it so quickly!

I have the same issue with MC 24.0.41 (64bit)
with GPU Gtx 1050 Ti with latest Nvidia drivers.

I have a similar issue with MC 24.0.41 (64bit) with GPU Gtx 1060 Ti with latest Nvidia drivers. But it happens when I pause a video, it immediately goes black and when I hit stop it returns to theater view. And then I go back to play the same video and sometimes it's still a black screen but with audio and sometimes it plays fine.  If I then hit stop a second time it reverts back to theater view and then video will play without issues.

This has been happening inconsistently since going 24.0.41.
