new 'puter/HD locations - want to keep same DB,art
« on: May 29, 2003, 11:53:53 am »

I have around 15K songs in my database on three drives and different directories and a lot of artwork in my coverart directory.  I just got a new computer (that is blazing, yay!).  On this new computer the directories are mapped differently than the old one (G: is now I:, etc.).  Obviously the locations of files are going to be different from my current database.

Some questions...

Is there any way to use my current database, or will I have to import all my files into a new one on the new machine?

Is there a way to save my various customized settings on my old machine and "import" them into the new one?

What of all the cover artwork?  If I create a new database, will it find the artwork?  Most of the artwork I saved external to files, after polling various users and found that preferential.  Is the artwork "remappable" to the albums?

Any other tips on recreating what I had on my old machine to the new one would be great.

MC has slowly become over the last year or so my most used application.  It will need to continue to be on this MEGA (at least for this month, er, week) Computer.

Thanks!

All of the cover art for Media Center is stored in the C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center\Data\Cover Art folder by default.  Personally, I use MP3 files for my music and store the images inside them (it goes into one of the tags).  Then if my files move, the images move with it.

As far as the paths are concerned, you can select the tracks that you want to move inside Media Center then right click and choose Library->Move/Copy Disk file and have it move all the current files to a new directory.  If they are current arranged in sub-folders it will stick them all in one folder after the move.  But then you can select them again and select Rename Files From Properties.  Using the Directory options, you can have Media Center arrange each file in a sub-folder under your top folder according the the artist/album names that are currently in the MP3 tags.

I just moved about 3GB of music following this process and it worked very well.

I just did this recently with Find/Replace on the filename to substitute the new drive letter (i.e. "G:\") for the old (i.e. "I:\").  You'll need to select all files before applying the Find/Replace.
