I just realized that I only have 2 "playlists" these days!  Everything's a smartlist!  One of them is just programmed with all the Nine Inch Nails albums, in chronological order, the other one is:

"Dre Day"
1.  The Next Episode -- Dr. Dre (feat. Snoop Dogg)
2.  Still D.R.E. -- Dr. Dre (feat. Snoop Dogg)
3.  Forgot About Dre -- Dr. Dre (feat. Eminem)
4.  Gin and Juice -- Snoop Dogg
5.  The Way I Am -- Eminem
6.  B***h Please -- Snoop Dogg (feat. Xzibit)
7.  Loddy Doddy -- Snoop Dogg

PS -- I LOVE SMARTLISTS!  I just turned a friend onto MC, and was explaining smartlists to her.  She said "Wait... these are just queries, aren't they?"  (she's a Database junkie).  I told her "Aye, just queries on your media database... er... library".  She didn't need any further info.  Smartlists rule!  Woot!

Smartlists do rule, but I still prefer playlists for listening. I tend to use smartlists for maintenance. My problem with using smartlists for listening is that my tag information just isn't perfect enough to match my listening tastes. For example, I could make a "favorites" smarlist that matches all songs rated 4 and 5, but it turns out that I don't actually want to regularly listen to all of my 4/5 songs--some of them are out of theme with the others (e.g. I might have a track on a techno album that is 9 minutes long and another track that is a 3 minute pop song and both of them are rated 5--they shouldn't come up next to each other in a playlist!). Sure, I could add genres and ratings and bears, oh my, but by the time I did all that, I could have just made a playlist!

What I did instead was create a "jukebox" playlist containing all songs rated 3, 4, and 5, then start cutting out stuff that didn't belong. By now, it pretty closely matches what I like to hear for "background music". It's like my own little radio station.

My favorite smartlists:

Task - Nomad duplicates (catches songs that a Nomad jukebox would consider duplicates--the default duplicate smartlist just looks at artist and name; Nomads look at artist, name, and album): [media type]=[audio] ~dup=[artist],[name],[album] ~sort=[artist],[name]

Task - commented (I use comments to make notes to myself about database maintenance--that's pretty much it, so if a track has a comment, I probably need to do something to it): -[Comment]=[] [Media Type]=[Audio]
