JRtools and LAV splitter issues
« on: January 04, 2019, 07:26:04 pm »

First I need to let you know that I hesitated before creating this topic as I was apprehending, following my research on the forum, to get to endless discussions to fix these issues. Finally I decided to go ahead with the hope that someone will help me solve the following problems:

1 - Installer not loading JRtools:

I used to run and successfully update MC 22 all the way to 24.0.41 on my Sony Vaio on Windows Vista. For some reason I never managed to move to newer builds. Any attempt I tried to move to a newer build all the way to the latest I'd get an error saying that the installer failed to load JRtools.

I tried all possible combinations including no firewall, no antivirus software, clean installation with new system settings and library backup, IE or Chrome as my default browsers, Reboot but in vain. So I'm now stuck on any version less or equal to 24.0.41!!!

2 - LAV-splitter missing:

All the dll files for LAV-Splitters do not get installed whith Ver 24.0.41 or below and the program doesnt get installed at all for any build above 24.0.41 due to the first issue mentioned above.
Again, I tried all possible combinations including no firewall, no antivirus software, clean installation with new system settings and library backups, IE or Chrome as my default browsers, Reboot but in vain. So now most of my video images/thumbnails are missing and I cannot play any video.
The system keeps flashing the following message : "Adding Required Components...LAV splitter". Also I never managed to restore the settings from a backup file. I get an error saying that the settings failed to load. I can only restore a library from a backup file.

Please note that I just bought a Dell laptop running on windows 10 64bit and I installed MC 24.0.72 with no problems. I still need though my Vaio to work as a backup machine.

Please help

Regards,

Rafic

First I dont have xp. I have vista.

Two MC 24 runs on Vista perfectly alright. At least It did all the way from the the first build to build 24.0.41

Three the issue is not as much about running MC24 but more about installing it. I had no issue installing and updating it until build 24.0.41.

Sounds like something is preventing the download of LAV on that machine. However, I'm not sure if Vista is still supported by JRiver or not - I wouldn't be surprised if it's not.

Looking at MC's system requirements page on the wiki, it says Windows 7 or newer. So that likely means Vista is no longer supported (and shouldn't be either, in my opinion). If that's indeed the case, somebody at JRiver should remove Vista being mentioned from the MC downloads page. ;)

This is quite unfortunate if it is the case. In theory JRiver should have warned their customers before offering them an upgrade from mc23 to mc24. Especially that mc24 worked fine all the way to build 24.0.41...I’m sorry but I find this unprofessional!

Honestly, I'd expect to see support for older Windows operating systems dropped when Microsoft ends extended support for operating systems, which was 2017 for Windows Vista.

There's a flaw with my logic... Windows 7. A year from now Windows 7's extended support will end as well, but dropping support for Windows 7 in Media Center may not be a good idea as it is still the second most used Windows operating system - it was only recently that Windows 10 finally surpassed Windows 7 in overall usage/adoption. So ending support for a (still) popular operating system may not be a good idea... for awhile at least. It happened with Windows XP (since it was still popular) with Media Center support ending within the last year (as far as I know) whereas extended support for XP ended in 2014.

Dropping support for older Windows can allow Media Center to take advantage of features (e.g. newer Direct3D) found in more modern Windows versions. Finally, dropping Vista support from Media Center may not be that big of a deal, since I believe Vista's worldwide usage is around 0.2% to 0.6% at this point. Keep in mind other software has dropped support for both XP and Vista; Steam, Google Chrome, Firefox, etc. It doesn't make sense to keep supporting operating systems over a decade old (though, my logic is flawed again because of Windows 7).

I would *highly* recommend not using a machine running Windows XP or Windows Vista at this point, especially one connected to the Internet. Neither receives any more security updates so I'd consider both to be insecure.

Until such time I will be forced to throw my windows vista laptop I will try to survive by downgrading jriver from mc24 to mc23.
One question: can i restore mc23 with mc24 backup?
Thanks

Isn't the fact that windows Vista hasn't received security updates for ages 'force' enough? It certainly should be. You can, of course, upgrade the OS without 'throwing' the laptop. . .  :)

You might try out Linux on your old laptop. The cost offset of not buying Windows will more than make up for the investment of an MC master license.

OK after several attempts during the week end I have to say that what you guys have told me regarding Vista upgrade to Windows 7 or 10 doesn't really stand.

I tried to install MC23 build 104 on my sony vaio and during the installation I got exactly the same error as MC24 installation. i.e. dll files for LAV-splitter missing.  MC23 used to run on my vaio like a charm for years. So this makes me think that the issue is not windows version but more something related to the installer ?

With or without the anti virus app and firewall enabled or disabled I get the same result ?

I would very much appreciate a feedback on this.

Did you uninstall the antivirus software (to test)?
