Nag screen to upgrade
« on: October 31, 2018, 11:59:14 am »

Hi

I am running 23.0.104

I keep getting "A newer version is available at a special pre-order price".
Kinda getting fed up as I already paid for it, I tend to upgrade every other version. How can I stop this please.

Try disabling auto-update.

Isn't there an option to switch it off completely? I tick box says DO NOT REMIND ME AGAIN. If not there should be. Reminds me of Microsoft and the update to Windows 10 nag screens

Sometimes I like checking with auto update even if there aren't any updates available, let's say there is a security issue and JR decide to update earlier versions for instance...

No, there isn't. The upgrade nag is there because some user's email providers were blocking JRiver emails from being received, so they decided to do it through the app so potential interested users could find out about MC24's release. Even if they added an option to opt-out of the upgrade nags right now, it'd only be in MC24 and above and not older versions.

Disabling auto-update is still the best suggestion here as it's very, VERY unlikely there will be another MC23 release since all development for MC23 has ceased.

Sorry just got back to respond.
I understand it won't happen for V23 but regardless IMHO it is not cool not to be able to switch this off.
Remember people getting annoyed about being nagged to upgrade to Windows 10.
That's all I have to say.

Thanks.

But you *can* switch it off by disabling automatic updates. Since MC23's development is over, it (very likely) won't receive anymore updates so there's no harm in doing so.

Actually there was a very late update for V22 or V23 I can't remember whereby the final RC got forgotten about and got released later (I was the one who jogged the memory) so I am reluctant to turn off updates.

As I've said I understand it won't happen for V23.
What you offer is a workaround and not a solution. I generally update after 2 new versions, hopefully it will be sorted by then.
Thanks.

A little box in the bottom left of the MC UI can hardly be interpreted as  "a nag screen". Just turn off autoupdates as AD suggested - since it solves the problem I would classify that as a solution. By the way this is the MC24 section of the forum.

Well I can understand both sides. It was annoying for me when I was still using MC23 but I also understand need to promote new version and think it's good for people who doesn't hang out in the interact. However I think that everybody who uses MC and is using older version have already seen this add and is aware that there is a new version so in that point it will come annoying to see that every now often if you just want to use version you currently have.

Also while turning off auto update is valid solution for this (as it is highly unexpected that there will be another build for older MC's)  I think it would be better to turn off notice for now for reasons mentioned above and only activate it when there is special price or MC25 is available.

Turning off auto update for turning off nag screens is of course a workaround!  ::)

Next people will be telling me that not running an application will stop it crashing (not that jriver has ever crashed on me, it's one of the most stable apps I own with Windows).

I see MC25 is coming out, ready to spend once it is on the roadmap or this is sorted, I can hardly see this taking up much Dev time.

This is why the nag is there. There's really no other way to reach potential customers using Hotmail/Outlook accounts that can't receive emails other than the upgrade nag. I agree it could be amended to include a "Dismiss" button which will turn the nag off (at least for that version of MC being offered). That way the nag will show once and can be dismissed during that MC development cycle but another nag for the version after that could appear (and repeat the cycle if desired).

In addition, I have another idea; having a "mini-nag" banner type of thing in the About Media Center window displaying what the latest version of MC being offered with a link to the upgrade page(s).
