...Just got the following e-mail from DigiGuide...

"We regret to inform you of the suspension of our United States service.

Sadly, due to the lack of interest in our service in the United States combined with huge supplier costs, it is no longer economical to support the service at this time.

The service will cease being updated as of today, Friday May 16th 2003. But we are confident that in the near future we will again be able to resume the service."

All I can say is RATS!

DigiGuide was simply the very best TV guide type of program out there.

I don't know what I'm going to do now for a TV guide type of program.

My favorite was GIST TV. Their best feature was the "Favorites Calendar". You could add shows to your list of favorites and then you could view a 7 day calendar that showed every time during the week they were scheduled. It was great! They went subscription a couple of months ago, but have since completely discontinued both pay and free services. Now, about the only free ones are TV Guide.com and Zap2it.com, and they're really not that great.

I have a feeling that we're finally getting to the point with the internet that the good stuff is gonna start costing money.

DigiGuide did cost money but they were not making enough to cover their cost.

Read on their site that they had spent $500,000 in the US but only got $150,000 in subscriptions.

Thats a real pain. Although I am using Digiguide in the UK   I was going to recommend that J River use it in MC9 in the future for Time shifting etc.

Now without US support, it will more difficult to make that decision. (Although I still think you should implement it as it is the BEST downloadable TV guide out there.) Maybe you could take it over or convince them to continue by implementing it into MC9!

You might want to add http://www.titantv.com to the list of US TV schedule information providers (They tend to be the best for HDTV, but I don't know how good they are for the rest)...

I tried titantv. It was nice, the grid was pretty easy to read. You can't customize anything about the grid layout, though. http://www.zap2it.com/ has a few more options for customization.

On the 16th of May DigiGuide sent me an e-mail saying amoung other things that...

Well it is now the 20th of May & guess what?  My DigiGuide just did a big automatic update (731Kb).

Don't know what this really means.  Maybe they had a change of heart?  Maybe the update was already in the loop?

I'll keep my eye on this as I really like DigiGuide.

VideoGuide was really cool. It got its signal via pager networks over the air. You bought the box, activated it, paid a small yearly fee and it changed the way I watched TV.

Alas they went out of business as well.

If MC is going to incorporate an EPG at some point it should definitely consider using XMLTV as this can get listings for all over the world, is reasonably easy to setup and because it is XML can easily be used within an EPG environment.  Check out the EP in myHTPC for an example of what can be done using XMLTV.  Just navigate to their site (www.myhtpc.net) and follow the instructions on how to set up for XMLTV

Don't know what an EPG environment is but what we need is a non-web on my hard drive updateble program like DigiGuide.

I do my web surfing with a 56k modem & am not always on line.  I do not want to have to go on-line just to look up the TV listing for the current hour.

Here it is the 24th & DigiGuide is still updating.
