ASIO Usage
« on: May 28, 2019, 04:04:20 pm »

Hello fellow river people.
Am trying to get my DAW (Samplitude) to speak to JRiver. JRiver can be selected in the Samplitude Audio Setup window but then you get the "No ASIO Driver Error" after selection. Do you need a separate ASIO driver in addition to JRiver in order to make JRiver available as an audio output?
Samplitude speaks directly to the audio output selection and, therefore, avoids the Windows System 7 sound selection definitions. When you select JRiver as the audio output and try either the WDM or MME options in Samplitude, you get a curious delayed audio result that is unusable.
SO it is necessary to playback directly to my converter/mixer (RME UFX) when I would like to send the signal to JRiver and take advantage of its DSP capabilities of accepting REW correction.
Any thoughts?
Thanks for your response

if you want to go DAW -> jriver -> audio device then you want asio line in in jriver -> https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=77800.0

Thanks. The link to the ASIO Client is no longer operative and could not find a multiclient ASIO driver on the Steinberg site. Did I miss something?
If I understood the information on your JRiver link you are setting up a multiclient ASIO driver to have all audio output sources speak to. Then that driver goes to the output converter.
Am using RME UFX as the eventual output and wonder if this will work. No Windows soundcard. Thanks again for your response. This is somewhat complicated, right?
All best.

Did find the multiclient driver (ASIO Multi Server) and loaded it. It recognized RME as the ASIO driver and lists No active clients. Have tried to select the ASIO Multi Server as the output engine in individual clients (= my DAW) and it does not appear as a selection option.
Am doing something wrong, apparently.
Thanks Again.

It is certainly true that you might need the multiclient driver if your audio device does not have a multiclient capable driver (though note this is 32bit only iirc) however that is not what I meant to refer to. I was just referring to asio line in and that was the first link I came across, sorry.

You need to use the asio line in function in MC so that it can receive an audio stream via asio, your daw will output to the jriver asio driver. You then configure the zone in MC to output to your actual audio device.

The signal chain is

DAW > jriver asio > MC > audio device

Thanks again, Matt. Have tried the above chain and while JRiver 24 can be selected in the DAW, you immediately get the "Loading Failed no ASIO driver" error. So the DAW does not see JRiver as an ASIO device even though the JRiver ASIO Line In function is selected and the correct ASIO output device (RME UFX) is chosen.
Both DAW and JRiver are 64 bits and maybe that is why they do not see the Multiclient Server.
Don't wish to bother you further; will just use the GLM Genelec software with the DAW and suffer without the REW room correction.

If you're using the 64-bit version of JRiver Media Center 24 on Windows, try the 32-bit build instead. Some ASIO drivers either aren't available or don't work in 64-bit MC.

Thanks again, Matt. Have tried the above chain and while JRiver 24 can be selected in the DAW, you immediately get the "Loading Failed no ASIO driver" error.  .
One other thing to mention, you have to manually open asio line in in MC specifying which channels to listen on and then try to use it. It does not come on automatically unfortunately and you cannot store a library item to make it easy to script either.

Matt: Not sure what you mean by "manually open." Am using the only location I know of in the File Menu. There are no channels there in my build. Is there another area where ASIO Lin In is further defined? By manual do you mean reselect the ASIO option each time?
Thanks.

Awesome Donkey and Matt:
When I manually select the ASIO Lin In function JRiver shows "Asio Opening..." in the main screen upper window and then appears to freeze. Don't think there is any problem with my computer or apps. The ASIO device selected, RME UFX, is fairly bulletproof.
Have you heard of any program issues here?
Thanks.

By manually open I mean https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Verifying_DSP_Studio#Configure_MC_2

Yes I have seen similar issues before, it might just be a UI issue though. If you play to it via the daw then do you see output land in MC via DSP studio?

I think it would be fair to say this is a relatively lightly used feature and it has some foibles. In particular, if it doesn't work then it is generally very hard to know why it isn't working. I have also had it arbitrarily stop working for no apparent reason at other times.

You can also use the rme loopback feature btw, you might find this more reliable. This still uses jriver asio line in but means the daw talks to the rme with totalmix configured to loop back to the channels jriver listens on.

Thanks for the perspective, Matt. Will just go with the GLM software that came with my Genelec monitors. It is not very good below 100 hz and doesn't have the impulse correction done so well in REW but I can live with it.

There's the rub. You cannot select JRiver 24 as an ASIO device in Samplitude (=DAW) because once the error message "Loading Failed No ASIO Driver" appears, the driver choice is negated and JRiver is not available for output. Have tried to access JRiver through the WDM and MME driver type options in the DAW but while these will output to JRiver, the signal is oddly configured -- each channel in the DAW sounds at different times.

Read carefully through the URL you sent and while it is a mastery of linkage between REW and JRiver, it does not address the inability to see the ASIO Open Live option or driver designation.

BUT the architecture here has real possibilities and, if it would work, then it would allow JRiver to speak nicely to DAWs. My goal is to use the REW convolution file created for the sound studio and placed in the JRiver DSP Convolution file window. This convolution file is a *.wav one but cannot be placed directly into my DAW (have checked with REW and there is no clear answer).

BUT(2) this convolution file could be accessed by the linkage between the DAW and JRiver and we have noted above that this does not appear to work.

Thanks again.

If you can document what isn't working, with good details, we can take a look at any problems.

@craig59 did you try the totalmix loopback route? I would expect this to work.

Matt:
Haven't been able to try the loopback yet and am constantly taxed by TotalMix's interface -- this despite being a RME guy since the 1990s. Find that it is typically German in that "If you don't already know the answer it is useless to refer to the manual (LOL)." Will give it a try within the week. When I spend time away from TotalMix, then come back to it, am always trying to remember the curious logic of some of the connections.
Jim:
Let me know what specifics you require that are not already supplied above. Can provide screenshots and such if that is helpful. Have been using JRiver since 2013 and have a background in relational databases and SQL. As a result, I stress to all that JRiver is a brilliantly-designed relational structure that is complex but understandable once you know the relationships. Can understand how imposing it can be for newbies and those without data backgrounds. Am on it every day with my music collection and it constantly earns admiration.

I used to use an RME device and I remember posting how to use it in this use case at some point, search fails me though I'm afraid but if you dig around then I am pretty sure something will be found :)
